“This is a fantastic example of a community coming together.” After a whopping 72 puppies were discovered in a small area in the Free State, the Cluny Animal Trust knew it was only a matter of time before that number exploded. Understanding that sterilisation is imperative to prevent dogs in poverty, the community have come together in a big way to help with a fantastic vacation raffle.

Rosendal, South Africa (29 May 2025) — Whilst doing outreach earlier this month, the Eastern Free State-based Cluny Animal Trust discovered a boom of puppies in a small town. This set off sirens of concern as a dog over-population crisis looms for the Mautse community in Rosendal.

A total of 72 puppies, most being female. This means that there will be more puppy booms to come if sterilisation action isn’t taken. Should the situation go unchecked, animal poverty is likely to rise given the size of Mautse and its limited capacity to care for the dogs.

The answer? Sterilisation. The solution? Community.

Sterilisations are no freebies, and the Cluny Animal Trust needs to raise a small fortune to help the animal population get under control again. Thankfully, the dog moms have been sterilised.

In fantastic news, Imogen Tarita of the Cluny Animal Trust tells Good Things Guy that the Rosendal community have already banded together to help raise the necessary funds by organising a travel raffle.

Hand-in-hand with the non-profit, people have come together to raise the R36,000 by way of a weekend trip raffle in the artist town of Rosendal.

The raffle boasts a 3 night stay at a local country retreat, dinner, breakfast, a sunset experience at Holkrans and even a picnic from PotLuck! It’s the perfect getaway for two.

With raffle tickets going for only R200, those entering can look forward to not only a unique travel experience in a gorgeous part of the Free State, but also knowing that they have contributed to animal wellbeing nearby.

Those keen to support the community and the Cluny Animal Trust can enter by emailing imogen@clunyanimaltrust.co.za. The draw date is 31 August and there are only 180 tickets available, so get them quick!

If anyone had told rising rugby star Ntokozo Makhaza that he would one day be included in the Springbok alignment squad camp, he would have looked at them and laughed. But his hard tackles and sprinting tries have propelled him forward, bringing the incredible possibility of one day wearing the green and gold for South Africa within reach!

Cape Town, South Africa (28 May 2025) – Hailing from the small town of Harrismith in the Free State, Ntokozo Makhaza grew up playing a lot of soccer, but that soon changed when he was introduced to rugby in primary school, probably the very best thing to happen to him!

He currently plays for the UCT Ikeys Tigers as a wing and fullback and has recently become one of South Africa’s most exciting young rugby prospects.

Makhaza was for the second time named Player of the Year as well as Backline Player of the Year in the recent Varsity Cup season. But that is just the tip of the iceberg for the young player’s promising career, as he recently was informed that he has been included in the 54-man Springbok alignment camp!

The 23-year-old admitted that receiving the news came as a surprise, and that he couldn’t help but wonder if it was legit. However, once it was confirmed, Makhaza shared that he was nervous and excited for the opportunity to level up his game.

“I was very surprised that I’m part of the camp. A bit nervous, but excited. I’m just happy and motivated to see that people are watching and monitoring varsity rugby. It inspired me to believe more that the dreams I have are possible,” Makhaza tells UCT, where he is a Bachelor of Social Science student.

In another major step in his already impressive rise, Makhaza will also join the Free State Cheetahs in July for the upcoming Currie Cup season, affording him the opportunity to contribute to rebuilding a team that’s investing in youth.

“They’re giving youngsters a chance, and I want to make the most of that,” he says.

“It’s about learning, growing, and giving my best.”

With every opportunity that comes this rugby player’s way, Makhaza’s main focus remains on soaking up everything he can at the Springbok alignment camp, something he never imagined even in his wildest dreams.

“If anyone would say I would be part of the Springbok alignment camp a few years back, or even at the beginning of this year, I would have looked at him and laughed.

“To me, it’s an honour and I’m privileged and humbled. I think it’s been created by the coaches and players because of the opportunity and platform they gave me. I’m humbled and excited for the opportunity,” shares a grateful Makhaza.

A few years ago, Senekal was known for unrest. Today, it’s becoming known for unity, purpose… and soon, a whole film industry!

Free State, South Africa (15 May 2025) – Senekal in the Free State has undergone a remarkable transformation. Once known for headlines about violence, this rural town is now defined by unity and renewal. Residents have taken it upon themselves to restore crumbling streets, parks and public spaces. And now, their successes are even drawing national attention!

Filmmaker Frans Cronje (brother of late cricketer Hansie Cronje) has announced plans to make Senekal a rural filming hub, betting on the town’s revived spirit and economy. In short, Senekal’s story has flipped from tragedy to something truly inspiring.

Just a few years ago, Senekal was the scene of a dark confrontation. On the 6th of October 2020, the trial of Brendin Horner’s accused killers was held at the local magistrate’s court. Frustrated protesters stormed the courthouse, breaking windows and overturning a police van. They set the vehicle alight, and reports described exchanged gunfire and stun grenades amid the chaos. News coverage at the time graphically captured burning tyres, shattered glass and frightened citizens. The events drew swift condemnation from leaders across South Africa. Police Minister Bheki Cele vowed to arrest the “lawless” attackers, and Justice Minister Ronald Lamola denounced the scenes as an “anarchic”, “inexcusable assault on the rule of law”. Free State Premier Sisi Ntombela and civil rights groups likewise condemned the violence. These tense days of outrage and grief put Senekal on the map but only as a cautionary tale of fear and division.

Instead of letting the turmoil define them, Senekal’s citizens rallied to rebuild their town. Within weeks a cross-community initiative took shape. A local pastor and civic leaders launched the Senekal/Matwabeng Community Forum to heal divisions and take action. The forum began organising volunteer work teams, farmers and township residents alike, to clean, fix and beautify Senekal together.

As we reported back then, “That ordeal feels like a lifetime ago, and Senekal is rallying together to restore the cracks in their community”.

Some of the key achievements of these volunteers included:

  • Pothole repairs: In the first year they filled over 5,500 potholes in the town’s streets.
  • Public spaces refreshed: Teams repainted playgrounds, fixed damaged road signs, trimmed overgrown gardens and felled unsafe trees.
  • Community clean-ups: They organised joint “clown town” clean-up days, where farmers and township residents cleared trash and rubble. In one event the teams hauled away more than 20 tonnes of debris from the township suburbs.
  • Facility upgrades: The ageing municipal swimming pool and other communal facilities were repaired and renovated by volunteers.

Frans Cronje, who grew up in the Free State but built a film career in Cape Town, was drawn to Senekal by the town’s comeback.

He says he wanted to make his next film in a rural area, not just to shoot on location but to “build something lasting that could rejuvenate the local economy”.

“Cape Town is a well-known destination for shooting films, but I felt the urge to take my next movie to the rural areas,” he explained.

In 2020 he moved to Senekal and joined the volunteer teams, helping to restore streets and parks with local youth and elders.

Now Cronje is putting action to his vision. He plans to convert an old grain mill into a film studio. Dubbed New Road Studio. His first production is a big-budget gladiator epic set in ancient Rome, chosen both for its appeal and its positive message. This project marks the first step in his broader vision to turn the town into a production hub for Christian-themed films.

Cronje himself emphasises the potential economic lift: building a film industry in Senekal “could have a significant impact on the economy of not just the town but the region,” he says.

In short, the once-sleepy farming town may soon host cameras, sets and crews, bringing new jobs for carpenters, caterers, designers and others.

The excitement is already palpable. Local businesses report more inquiries, and young people say they are considering careers in film and technology for the first time. Cronje’s project has even drawn support from national film bodies looking to diversify South Africa’s production locales. Everywhere you look, the mood in Senekal is upbeat. What began as a handful of volunteers has grown into a movement backed by both faith leaders and civil society.

The town that made headlines for violence is now poised to make headlines for creativity. Residents are already planning local film festivals, training programs and events to showcase Senekal’s revival. In short, the community is writing a joyful new chapter… one defined by resilience, unity and opportunity.

Senekal’s remarkable transformation shows how ordinary people can turn crisis into possibility. The achievements so far are impressive and the road ahead looks brighter than ever.

Some animals are rescued under the worst circumstances only to become the most cherished members of the family. That was Bullie, a bull whose recent passing has left a deep void at the Virginia SPCA.

Virginia, South Africa (05 May 2025) – Bullie, an endearing bull with a beautiful brown coat, has left a void in the hearts of those who had the pleasure of meeting him.

Found in 2014, hobbled and on his own next to the road, Bullie meant very little to those who had left him behind, but meant the absolute world to the rescuers of the Virginia SPCA in the Free State.

“Bullie was only a few days old when we rescued him, and our staff raised him to the amazing Bull he was.

“All the staff had a very close connection and bond with Bullie. Samuel always made sure he was sparkling clean, and among all the others, Bullie was fed, spoilt with treats, and loved, he was so loved,” the SPCA said.

Adored for his protective nature toward the other animals and his mischief whenever there was food around, nothing could have prepared the team for the sad day they had to say goodbye to the beloved bull, whose loss has cut deeper than words can explain.

Taken far too soon than anyone could have expected, Bullie is believed to have suffered from a neurological condition. However, the memory of this magnificent soul will forever be etched into the hearts and minds of those he has left behind.

“Bullie, you were so much more than you knew to us. Rest easy, Boy. We love you, and your majestic presence will be missed.”

Diagnosed with endometriosis, midwife Sebabatso Tsaoane often wondered if she would become a statistic who never got to experience the joys of motherhood. But the hopes of her heart materialised in the form of a precious baby girl.

Bloemfontein, South Africa (29 April 2025) – Endometriosis affects many women across the board. It’s defined as a disease in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus, causing severe pain in the pelvis and issues with fertility.

When Sebabatso Connie Tsaoane received this diagnosis years ago, her dreams of one day becoming a mother were shattered.

As a qualified Midwife and Midwifery Lecturer at the University of the Free State, Sebabatso immersed herself in a research study looking at how endometriosis affects fertility, among many other things. During that time, one thing always stood out most; she couldn’t help but wonder if she would be part of the statistics related to infertility.

But her story now transcends those concerns, blossoming into a heartwarming reality. Years later, she finally became a mommy to a precious baby girl.

“I can’t believe that once upon a time I honestly wondered if this would be possible for me too.

“I will never take any of this motherhood experience lightly, and oh what a precious little girl who gets to call me Mama,” she shares in a post.

In a post, Sebabatso shares adorable glimpses into the joy of attending princess birthday parties with her baby girl – something that had once been a far-fetched dream.

Her post, which has gained much traction online, not only warms the heart but also gives hope to countless women experiencing endometriosis and similar challenges she once did, too.

Learners are getting a head-start on their recycling habits in rural Mpumalanga and the Free State thanks to an eco-education boost in the area that’s teaching them how to conserve their natural environments:

South Africa (09 March 2025) — As many adults lean into recycling habits following years of not knowing better, the focus is on the next generation to ensure that these youngsters have a steady eco-education from tender ages.

A recent and welcomed boost in this niche of education hails from parts of rural Mpumalanga and the Free State thanks to a team-up between education non-profit the Good Work Foundation (GWF) and public benefit organisation Fibre Circle.

Launched in Hazyview in February, the recycling project is giving young students and staff members a practical means to nurture their recycling habits.

Waste bins and other materials necessary to kick-start waste separation have been distributed across six GWF campuses, with waste set to be collected for recycling. In the same breath, rebates will serve as incentives for staff who double as the initiative’s drivers!

Because most of the GWF campuses border the Kruger National Park, the eco-knowledge set to blossom as a result of the recycling habits project becomes all the more important.

As GWF’s head of campus operations, Musa Mokoena says:

“We’ve found there is very little consistent environmental education at home or at school in the areas in which we operate. For that reason, we were looking for a project that would leave a positive footprint on the environment and teach our staff members, students and learners how to dispose of waste correctly,” she says.

Musa adds, “It’s really exciting to see how people are already changing the way they think and act when it comes to separating waste.”

Induction sessions will also be rolled out across the charity’s network of 29 public primary schools, as well as the high schools it works with.

Musa shares that the local schools are very excited about the initiative and intend to use the rebates they receive from recycling waste to help their schools with things like makeovers and learner nutrition projects.

“They are not just doing the right thing by filling up the bins with recyclable waste – they are also reaping the rewards. They are seeing that there are opportunities for entrepreneurship and revenue generation in the green economy space.”

Says Ally Hlatshwayo, who has tended the garden at GWF’s Huntington Digital Learning Campus since 2017:

“I’m excited about this recycling project because it will create jobs, and it will help us keep our campus, schools and community clean and healthy. I’m learning new things, because I wasn’t aware that we can recycle our paper, glass and plastic. So we are not going to dump or burn waste – we are going to recycle it.”

After you register, you’ll either spend the next few months preparing for the plunge, or you’ll forget you signed up, only to realise the month before, at which point you’ll just have to pray that the spirit guide of Howard Warrington will guide you through the challenge. You can either join the action in Fouriesburg or take a plunge somewhere you fancy, so long as you record it and send the video to the charity.

As for the fundraising part of it all, the entry fee is R100, as well as a bag of pet food for a cat or dog. Some people also get their community to sponsor their plunges to make the effort go even further for the animals that the Cluny Animal Trust helps.

Beyond an experience you’ll never forget every time you take a warm shower and remember the cold you beat, there are also exciting prizes on the cards. And, of course, the knowing that you played a courageous role in supporting a charity that’s making life for animals in the Eastern Free State healthier and happier.

Oliver, a cat with a now-lush golden coat living his best life, had a rough start to life, living in a vegetable box under neglected conditions.

Virginia, South Africa (13 February 2025) – After taking one look at his fluffy golden coat and striking eyes as he poses for the camera, you’d never say that healthy cat, Oliver, had led a completely different life. A life marked by neglect and confined to a vegetable box in unsuitable conditions.

After learning about his dreadful circumstances, the Virginia SPCA (VSPCA) team in the Free State wasted no time in rescuing him, removing him from the dire conditions and unfortunate fate he had endured.

Then, in a heartwarming twist of fate, Petrie Venter, while visiting the SPCA, met the special cat – a crucial moment that would change both their lives for the absolute best! Petrie’s days would, from then on, be filled with the warmth of a loyal feline companion, and Oliver would have finally found a loving home and a devoted pet parent.

According to the Virginia SPCA this special cat has been happily adopted by Petrie and is living the life of a king, filled with shelter, nutritious food and most importantly, love. Oliver could not have it better, and his life had taken the most precious transformation!

Not only does he look stunning with his well-groomed coat and sparkling green eyes, but his journey speaks to the power of love in changing a life for the better!

“Thank you, Petrie, for being the best in this beautiful boy’s life,” VSPCA said.

Despite his own challenges, Bubbles radiates a gentle warmth that soothes anxious kittens! He bravely overcame a near-death experience to become a comforting friend for other animals at the Virginia SPCA in the Free State.

Virginia, South Africa (20 January 2025) – It is not every day you get to encounter a struggling soul that offers a comforting warmth to help you overcome your own troubles.

Virginia SPCA in the Free State has a very special doggo, who has easily captured the hearts of staff and dog lovers alike, as well as a very anxious little kitten.

“Bubbles is our special needs resident doggie with very limited eyesight and hearing,” shares the SPCA.

“Bubbles was initially adopted but sadly suffered a setback after anaesthesia.”

Although his adoption process was consequently cancelled, the staff continued to spend more than a week by his side, encouraging Bubbles to wake up and fight for his life. And wake up he did – but not without sacrifice as he sadly lost most of his eyesight and hearing.

“However, he is leading a full and rich life and has since been the therapist of VSPCA who comforts scared and terrified pups and kittens to feel more comfortable.”

A sweet video shared on Facebook shows the Bubbles comforting a kitten who recently lost his way and was trembling with fear and anxiety.

According to the Virginia SPCA, this kitten has been in the company of this remarkable dog for over a month now, and the feline’s confidence is growing each day.

Bubbles is one of those precious souls who warm our hearts, in that despite his unforeseen challenges, still embraces life and finds purpose in helping others!
