“This is a fantastic example of a community coming together.” After a whopping 72 puppies were discovered in a small area in the Free State, the Cluny Animal Trust knew it was only a matter of time before that number exploded. Understanding that sterilisation is imperative to prevent dogs in poverty, the community have come together in a big way to help with a fantastic vacation raffle.

Rosendal, South Africa (29 May 2025) — Whilst doing outreach earlier this month, the Eastern Free State-based Cluny Animal Trust discovered a boom of puppies in a small town. This set off sirens of concern as a dog over-population crisis looms for the Mautse community in Rosendal.

A total of 72 puppies, most being female. This means that there will be more puppy booms to come if sterilisation action isn’t taken. Should the situation go unchecked, animal poverty is likely to rise given the size of Mautse and its limited capacity to care for the dogs.

The answer? Sterilisation. The solution? Community.

Sterilisations are no freebies, and the Cluny Animal Trust needs to raise a small fortune to help the animal population get under control again. Thankfully, the dog moms have been sterilised.

In fantastic news, Imogen Tarita of the Cluny Animal Trust tells Good Things Guy that the Rosendal community have already banded together to help raise the necessary funds by organising a travel raffle.

Hand-in-hand with the non-profit, people have come together to raise the R36,000 by way of a weekend trip raffle in the artist town of Rosendal.

The raffle boasts a 3 night stay at a local country retreat, dinner, breakfast, a sunset experience at Holkrans and even a picnic from PotLuck! It’s the perfect getaway for two.

With raffle tickets going for only R200, those entering can look forward to not only a unique travel experience in a gorgeous part of the Free State, but also knowing that they have contributed to animal wellbeing nearby.

Those keen to support the community and the Cluny Animal Trust can enter by emailing imogen@clunyanimaltrust.co.za. The draw date is 31 August and there are only 180 tickets available, so get them quick!

I saw aliens, explosions and emotional breakdowns (all before Monday) and now I’m bringing it all to you in this week’s Friday Five (even though it’s Saturday).

South Africa (23 May 2025) – Fridays have a kind of magic to them, don’t they? That feeling of the week winding down, of exhaling just a little deeper, and if you’re lucky, that first sip of something cold or hot as you toast yourself for surviving another five-day rollercoaster.

But around here, Friday means something extra special… it means The Friday Five.

This is your ultimate guide to the things that are bringing joy, spark and flavour into my world… and maybe they’ll do the same for yours. From the big screen to your living room screen, from fresh new tracks to cosy getaways, and of course, a little reminder that kindness costs nothing but means everything… this is the good stuff.

You see, over the years, I’ve been incredibly lucky. I get invited to movie premieres before the general public sees the trailer. I get sent screeners of series not even on local platforms yet. I’ve walked through the doors of restaurants so new they’re still printing the menu. And because of this wild job I get to call my life, I wanted a place to share it all with you.

That place is The Friday Five… my happy little corner to gush, rave, recommend and ramble about all the lekker things worth your time.

So… let’s dive into what’s making me feel all the good things this week:

🎬  Movies you need to see! Friday Five | Friday Five

🕵🏻‍♂️ Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning

I went to watch the new Mission Impossible last week.

But let me be completely honest… I was there for the salt-and-vinegar popcorn. And to hang out with friends. Not for the actual movie.

Mon invited me. And if you know Mon, you know… you don’t say “no” to Mon. She’s a little bit Monica from F.R.I.E.N.D.S. but with Portuguese fire, some Spanish flair and a whole lot of South African spice. We grew up together in the South. That woman would quite literally knife me for missing her call.

And this was serious. She’d lined up a babysitter and made plans (on a Saturday nogal) so when she said “Let’s go,” I just nodded and said “Yes, boss.”

I digress.

I have absolutely no clue how this franchise has managed to drag itself through 8 movies over 3 decades, racking up nearly 20 hours of runtime.

TWENTY HOURS.

Of Tom Cruise doing Tom Cruise.

It’s outrageous. It’s over the top. Implausible. And downright silly.

And yet… I had the best bladdy time.

It’s like adrenaline injected directly into your eyeballs. I found myself literally slapping my thighs and shouting, “Ag no, come on now! There’s no way it gets more hectic…”

But then it does.

And I think it’s exactly what movies are supposed to be. Escapism. A bit of ridiculousness. A visual “feast” that lets you forget about your to-do list for a few hours.

The stunts are insane. The action is relentless.

And South Africa being a main feature was so flipping lekker.

Look, they mashed up Blyde River Canyon, the Drakensberg and what felt like a sprinkle of Wild Coast in one scene, which is hella confusing for us and makes no sense geographically but it was still a beautiful nod to our gorgeous landscape. And no one will really know it’s not the same place. They’ll just think what I was thinking… that scenery was chef’s kiss.

It was a Saturday. The IMAX was packed. People were clapping, laughing and even squealing out loud. At one point, when they mentioned “Cape of Good Hope, our neighbour shouted out “YES MAN”.

I giggled.

And as the credits rolled, I walked out smiling. Full popcorn heart. Full friendship cup. Not knifed. And one hundred percent fully entertained.

Mission Impossible is a silly franchise. But it is so much fun.

Go watch it (preferably in IMAX).

Now in Cinemas.

🌺 Lilo & Stitch (Live Action Remake)

The reviews for the new live-action Lilo & Stitch are streaming in… and ja, some of them are not so lekker.

The Guardian gave it one star. Vulture tore it apart. The AV Club called it “dreadful.” Even Variety said the magic is gone.

But I disagree.

I went to the South African premiere last week, and from the second I arrived, I could tell this wasn’t your usual red carpet night. The venue was filled with the who’s who… and their little ones.

Tiny tots all in tow.

I sat in the theatre and watched the new remake in the eyes (and loudest sounds) of the kids around me. Every moment hit perfectly. Just like it did for me when I was a kid. The kids were giggling. And screaming at the screen.

The oooohhhhss. The aaaahhhhss. And the tears.

By the end, the kids were all clapping.

It made them feel something.

At its core, Lilo & Stitch is about broken people finding each other and choosing to stay. It’s messy and loud and totally imperfect. But it’s about love anyway. It’s about how family isn’t just who you’re born to, it’s who shows up and sticks around.

“Ohana means nobody gets left behind or forgotten”… and that’s the real heart of the story.

And the heart is definitely there.

Lilo & Stitch was never made to impress critics. Especially grown-up ones.

It was made for anyone who’s ever felt a little out of place. A little sad. A little lost. A little too much. It’s for the ones who need reminding that love isn’t always tidy. But when it’s real, it’s everything.

And it was made for a new generation to fall in love with the characters all over again.

So take your kids. Or go with that kid who still lives in your heart. Sit in that cinema, let your guard down and remember what it feels like to believe that no one, not even the strangest little alien, gets left behind…. or forgotten.

Now in Cinemas.

📺 Series to keep your eye on Friday Five | Friday Five

🌊 Sirens (Netflix)

A psychological thriller with all the right ingredients: mystery, a lavish seaside estate, complicated family dynamics, and secrets bubbling just under the surface.

It’s about a scrappy sister digging into her sibling’s unsettling relationship with a billionaire boss. But what unfolds is more than a drama. It’s a tense, layered, slow-burn story that sucks you in and doesn’t let go.

It’s CRAZY but totally addictive. And it’ll keep you guessing till the very last episode. Highly recommend for your next binge.

Now on Netflix.

🥶 Nine Perfect Strangers – Season 2

We’re back. But this time, Masha’s “wellness retreat” has moved to the Bavarian Alps. Sounds peaceful? Think again.

This season throws nine new characters into the deep end… some of them family, which means their baggage didn’t even need to be packed, it came along automatically. It’s moody. Tense. Introspective.

The first episode doesn’t explode with drama but trust me, the slow simmer makes it even juicier.

Nicole Kidman is hauntingly good. The cinematography is breathtaking. And the plot is deliciously twisted.

Now on Hulu and Disney+.

🎧 Music you need to hear Friday Five | Friday Five

🎶 Benson Boone – “Momma Song”

A quiet, powerful love letter to his parents that sneaks up on you with all the feels. It’s tender. Raw. And if you’ve ever had a moment of gratitude for your mom or dad, this one will have you in full snot-and-tears mode.

🎶 Reneé Rapp – “Leave Me Alone”

Bold. Brash. Brilliant. Reneé is unapologetically herself and this track is pure rebellious perfection. If you’re in a mood to scream-sing in the car, this is your anthem.

🎶 Skunk Anansie – “Shame”

YES, millennial me is screaming. The 90s rock gods are back with a new album and their first single? Glorious. It’s like picking up a diary from 2002 but with 2025 wisdom. Heavy guitar, raw emotion, iconic vocals. Go listen.

🌍 Places to go Friday Five | Friday Five

Dullstroom – Mpumalanga’s Hidden Gem

Just a couple of hours from Joburg (depending on how many padstals you stop at), Dullstroom feels like you’ve left the noise behind and stepped into a storybook. Think crackling fires, misty mornings, handmade pies, friendly faces and a main road that’s charming in the way that only small towns can be.

It’s the kind of place where your phone signal weakens, but your connection to everything else strengthens.

Here’s what makes Dullstroom worth the trip… especially in winter:

🐦 Birds of Prey & Rehabilitation Centre

One of the absolute must-visits. This centre is home to owls, eagles, falcons and other majestic creatures who are either being cared for or rehabilitated after injury. It’s more than just a viewing experience, it’s educational and moving. Watching these powerful birds fly again is an emotional reminder of how recovery is possible… even with broken wings.

🥃 The Whisky Bar at Wild About Whisky

Dullstroom is home to the largest whisky collection in the Southern Hemisphere. Yes, you read that right. Whether you’re a seasoned sipper or someone who still says “ew” when you smell it, the tastings are well-curated, informative and weirdly fun. Bonus: they do whisky and chocolate pairings!

🍽 Food, Glorious Food

This little town punches way above its weight when it comes to food. Some local favourites:

Harrie’s Pancakes: You cannot come to Dullstroom and not eat here. It’s a rite of passage. Try the cinnamon sugar classic or go wild with the trout and cream cheese.

The Mayfly: Cosy pub vibes, great atmosphere, and proper winter comfort food.

Art of Food: A small, seasonal menu with big, bold flavours. Perfect for date night.

🎣 Fly Fishing Capital of South Africa

Even if you’re not into fishing, there’s something calming about standing by the water and watching others do it. If you do want to give it a go, there are loads of places offering gear and quick tutorials. You don’t need to be a pro, just bring patience and maybe a flask of something warm.

🪵 Cabin Culture & Cosy Stays

Part of Dullstroom’s charm lies in its cabins, cottages and cosy stays. Many places come with fireplaces, mountain views and deep baths made for wine and long chats. Whether you’re travelling as a couple, family, or solo explorer, there’s something incredibly therapeutic about waking up to soft mist rolling across the hills.

🛍 Shops That Still Feel Personal

Walk along the main road and you’ll find bookstores, antique shops, delis and little stores selling everything from handmade crafts to local cheeses. Every shopkeeper has a story. Take time to listen.

🌧 And the Weather?

Cold. Often rainy. Sometimes frosty. And completely perfect for woolly jerseys, beanies, boardgames and fireside chats. In a world constantly telling us to go faster, Dullstroom whispers: slow down.

❤ One more thing

People are struggling.

Your neighbour.
That friend you haven’t chatted to lately.
The acquaintance you are connected with on social media.

People are going through the most, fighting massive things (sometimes feeling alone) and just not saying anything.

It’s that first rule of fight club. We’re not supposed to talk about it

Our inbox is a flood of both heartwarming stories and heartbreaking cries for help. And every single one reminds me just how important it is to show up for each other.

I’ve been lucky. This platform has created a beautiful network of helpers. Real-life heroes who are there for each other.

We connect people to support, to stories, to hope.

The truth is donor fatigue is real. Compassion can feel heavy when the need is endless. And it is endless.

But it’s not hopeless.

So this post is just a reminder to please keep being gentle with the world. Be kinder to everyone you meet. Including yourself. Check in on your people. Offer a smile. Share what you can… whether it’s a message, a meal or a moment of your time.

And if you are reading this, and it all feels too heavy, then I want to say that I am sorry. I want to remind you that you are not alone. Have faith that a better tomorrow will come. Hold on. And keep telling yourself that “you’ve got this”.

I am rooting for you.

Okay. Love you. Bye.

One of the must-see gardens in the world is right here in South Africa according to the New York Times’ panel of horticultural experts!

Global (15 May 2025) — Recently, The New York Times put horticultural experts to task to compile a list of must-see gardens from around the world, and a South African favourite made the cut!

The New York Times Style Magazine team were curious to learn which gardens were worth flying across the world for. With a panel of six renowned and experienced horticultural experts to lean on (including Royal Horticultural Society gold medalist Juliet Sargeant and architecture professor at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design, Toshiko Mori) the curation of the ’25 Gardens You Must See’ list came to be, and bucket lists everywhere have taken inspiration since.

The panelists nominated 10 must-see gardens each before the final list was built. Importantly, the gardens have not been displayed in a kind of ranking order.

Excitingly for South Africa, it was the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden that nestled into the list beautifully. A space rich with natural heritage, historic moments and views that’ll make you wonder whether you haven’t accidentally teleported to a time long before mankind interfered with nature, if you haven’t already gone exploring at Kirstenbosch, this is certainly your sign to do so.

Per the New York Times:

“While native gardening has only recently become mainstream in the United States, the concept is nothing new in South Africa. Case in point: this botanical garden in the Western Cape province, the first of its kind in the world dedicated entirely to indigenous flora, which was established over a century ago in 1913. Located eight miles outside the city center and set against the backdrop of Table Mountain’s eastern slope, the 1,305-acre public space showcases more than 7,000 species, with high priority given to the singular fynbos biome, which is found almost exclusively in the country’s Western Cape region and includes stiff, structured proteas, shaggy, flowering ericas and tufted, reedlike plants called restios.

There’s also a robust collection of spiky cycads, a type of seed plant some believe predates the dinosaurs, and visitors might also spot local fauna, including brilliantly colored sunbirds — which resemble hummingbirds — owls and wildcats. The Tree Canopy Walkway, a curved, steel-and-timber treetop bridge inspired by a snake’s skeleton, winds 65 feet above it all, offering mountain vistas and sweeping forest views.”

Other gardens on the list include Australia’s Royal Botanic Garden Sydney, the Saihoji Kokedera Temple and Moss Gardenin Kyoto, Japan, Giardino di Ninfa in Cisterna di Latina, Italy and the Classical Gardens of Suzhou, in China to name a few.

You can find the full list, here.

South Africa has just been ranked one of the best places in the world for British expats… and that’s not only good for them, it’s great for us too.

Global (15 May 2025) – Yes, our headlines are often filled with chaos. Loadshedding, politics, potholes and people leaving. But every now and then, something happens that reminds us just how special South Africa really is… and that maybe, just maybe, we don’t always see it because we’re living in it.

This is one of those times. And honestly, we are here for it.

South Africa has just been named one of the top three countries for British expats to move to in 2025, and that’s not only a proud moment… it’s a powerful one. It’s a reminder that despite everything, the world still sees the beauty and magic in our country.

The list, released by British relocation experts U.K.ABROAD, highlights what we already know in our bones: this place is pure gold. From the sunshine and scenery to the lower cost of living (for someone coming with Pounds) and our incredible quality of life, South Africa is drawing people in.

The World Sees What We Sometimes Forget

With more than 5.5 million British citizens currently living outside of the UK, South Africa has quietly become one of their favourite spots to start over. And that’s not small news. That’s massive. The list puts us in the same league as places like Australia, New Zealand and Canada. But unlike those countries, South Africa isn’t just another expat destination; it’s got a soul.

According to the study, some of the reasons why include the fact that English is widely spoken, our warm weather and the ability to live here visa-free for up to 90 days are major drawcards. Add to that the sunshine (over 2,500 hours a year!), the affordability and our laid-back lifestyle… and suddenly it makes sense why thousands of Brits are choosing to move here every year.

And with around 200,000 Brits already living in South Africa, this isn’t a new trend, it’s one that’s growing.

Why This is Good News for South Africa

When expats choose to live, work, and even retire here, they’re not just sipping wine in Franschhoek or surfing in Jeffreys Bay. They’re investing. They’re creating jobs. They’re contributing to our local economy. They’re enrolling their kids in our schools, shopping in our stores, hiring local teams and sharing their love for SA with the rest of the world.

And when more people see South Africa as a great place to live? Tourism rises. International confidence increases. Local communities benefit. The more we’re seen for our potential. And the more we grow.

It’s also a much-needed reminder (to us South Africans) that what we have is worth celebrating.

We often look at other countries and think the grass is greener. But people are literally moving here for the exact reasons we sometimes overlook: the lifestyle, the views, the energy, the diversity, the people.

From Penguins to Pinotage… It’s All Right Here

A retiree from Manchester now spends mornings walking along the cliffs of Hermanus, watching whales breach in the bay. A couple from London has opened a guesthouse in Stellenbosch, serving local Pinotage to guests as the sun sets in shades of blush and gold. A young family from Birmingham is raising their children in Durban North, where schooldays include learning Zulu and afternoons are spent barefoot in the garden.

This isn’t a dream. It’s already happening.

From the penguins of Boulders Beach to the cliffs of the Drakensberg and even the electric buzz of Johannesburg, South Africa offers a kind of magic that simply can’t be found anywhere else. And the world is finally starting to notice.

The financial perks are just as attractive. According to William Russell, the cost of living here is roughly 65% lower than in the UK, giving British expats the chance to stretch their pensions further, build a better life, and in doing so, contribute positively to our communities too.

We’re More Than Our Headlines

Yes, South Africa has challenges. We all know it. But we also know how to make the most of every single day. We know how to dance in the rain and braai during loadshedding. We know how to show up for one another and how to find joy in the chaos.

And now the rest of the world is starting to see that too.

“I wake up every morning to blue skies and Table Mountain, it still feels like a dream,” said one British expat now living in Cape Town.

We’re glad you feel that way. We do too.

So, if you needed a sign today that South Africa still holds immense potential, this is it. When people from around the globe choose to pack up their lives and start fresh here, it says a lot about what we have and what we offer.

It’s not just about expats choosing South Africa… it’s about the world choosing us. Again.

And that is a very good thing.

A novel plan to protect one of the most threatened habitats in the world, Renosterveld, is offering people the chance to nurture skills (like cooking or art) while actively contributing to the preservation of this natural treasure in the Cape Floral Kingdom.

Overberg, South Africa (14 May 2025) — In the heart of the Overberg region, a new initiative hopes to help more people protect Renosterveld, one of the most threatened habitats in the world.

Non-profit the Overberg Renosterveld Trust (ORT) has introduced the Wild and Wise Retreats initiative, a means to connect people to new or improved skills and the natural environment all in one intention-focused getaway weekend in the countryside.

What’s the Deal With Renosterveld?

The Renosterveld is considered a hidden treasure of the Cape Floral Kingdom, renowned for its rich biodiversity in both plants and animal species. However, over 95% of the area has been lost to agriculture. As the ORT team explained, the fragments of the area that survived and remained are overlooked and undervalued.

As such, the non-profit works hard to protect what’s still left. The ORT undertake restorations of degraded habitat, finding more about species and driving greater awareness toward Renosterveld’s value and plight. However, they cannot do it alone.

The Wild and Wise Retreats initiative then, is positioning parts Renosterveld as a sanctuary for both soil and soul. The Haarwegskloof Renosterveld Reserve (between Swellendam and Bredasdorp) is offering people a slice of peace from daily life hustles, along with a host of activities on offer, from cooking to art and photography. Not to mention nature walks, mindfulness sessions, birding, and even bio-blitzing.

In this way, people get the chance to nurture skills and themselves while actively nurturing the environment in which they’re learning them. Funds raised from the Wild & Wise Retreats directly support the ORT’s conservation work, and the more conservation work undertaken, the better chance threatened habitat has to flourish once again.

“Our aim is to offer a space where people can learn or master a new skill, enjoy the company of like-minded people, find personal healing while also becoming stewards of the Renosterveld,” explains Dr Odette Curtis-Scott, the ORT’s CEO. “By experiencing the beauty and fragility of this landscape firsthand, participants leave with a renewed sense of purpose and a commitment to caring for nature.”

“Renosterveld is sometimes seen as the ugly sister of fynbos,” says Dr Curtis-Scott. “But it doesn’t take much effort to see the incredible jewels of this habitat. We’ve found more than 50 plant species in an area of one metre by one metre. And that’s not to mention the insects, birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians that rely completely on Renosterveld. If we do not act now to protect Renosterveld, then this habitat faces certain extinction.”

All catering is included during the retreat – with well-known culinary queen Dee Robinson making a feast of every meal. And accommodation options include staying in the Old Dairy Guest House or the Renosterveld Research Centre, both on Haarwegskloof.

Three high school friends recently reunited for the first time in forty years at AfrikaBurn for their 60th birthdays! Their adventures at the festival (as more mature festival goers) reminded us why reunions, no matter how long-overdue, are a must!

Tankwa Karoo (14 May 2025) — As thousands of people recount their recent adventures from AfrikaBurn, Helen Patricia’s stood out in a big way. It wasn’t just because Helen’s story focused on the reunion of three high school friends who hadn’t been together in some forty years or because the three women were celebrating their 60th in the most iconic way (at one heck of a festival).

It wasn’t just for the humour intertwined in Helen’s recounting either. Instead, it was the sum of all these unique parts that made for a dazzling reminder (for anyone who might need it) to act on reunion plans, no matter how long they’re overdue or how far out of your comfort zone they might lead you!

From preschool teachers’ failed campsite jollifications that required exchanging massages for assistance to grooving with one’s hearing aid in tow, the adventure had us giggling and missing our long-lost friends!

As Helen writes:

“Three high school friends reunited at AfrikaBurn 2025 to celebrate turning 60. The one from New Zealand hadn’t seen the 2 others for 40 years. Another came from Switzerland.

The South African hired the Bushy Kamper Trailer. With her long-suffering husband, all tried in vain to force the flimsy tent pegs into the desert soil with a rubber mallet, after the gruelling ascent up the Katbakkies Pass, rattling across the corrugated dust, dredging up memories from 80’s discos at the Southern Suburbs’ Werdmuller Centre.

One wore a hearing aid but the ones who didn’t, couldn’t hear anything anyway, with all the shuddering.

The South African preschool teacher’s attempts at jollifying their campsite with bunting from last year’s school concert was underwhelming and blown away with the first strong winds on the 2nd day! This complete fail was redeemed by one of the group gifting osteopathic sessions to nearby campers on the massage table brought along.

Afrikaburn is a bit like the parable of the six blind men and the elephant, all having their own unique sensorial experience of a mammoth animal.

The 3 old, almost-deaf women got their own satisfying experience.

The Oasis of the Crone became their place, starting with a charming baptism into the Oasis Way by the beautiful Aimee, followed by a 2 and-a-half-hour Grounding Mirror Journey with a Dutch Sorceress…

…Their last evening ended where it started, at the Oasis, with Silent Disco Headphones and Dancing in the Desert with the sun setting and the Tetrahedon burning on the horizon, setting intentions within. It felt good to be a Crone.”

So, if you’re looking for a sign to connect with old friends, consider this it!

If you’re in denial about winter being well on its way,  don’t go to Matroosberg! The first snowfall of the season has struck, which means its only a matter of time until the area becomes a winter wonderland.

Matroosberg, South Africa (05 May 2025) — The air is crisper, the chills are chilling and winter is well on its way across South Africa. But, it’s not all gloom and blankets that we’ve been avoiding unpacking for weeks. In exciting news for those hoping to catch a glimpse of snow, the Western Cape has welcomed its first glimmers of snowfall, with Matroosberg spotting its first sightings of the season!

The Matroosberg Private Nature Reserve announced on 2 May that the first snow for 2025 had fallen and that the “snow party” is starting early this year.

What, in South Africa?

Contrary to popular belief, several areas in South Africa welcome snowfall.

Though snow might only be at a dusting phase right now in Matroosberg, the snowfall there, the Cederberg Mountains and Sutherland (to name a few spots) can get thick enough for snow-angels, snowmen and snowball fights. Don’t forget to keep an eye on the Drakensberg Mountains, for they too can enjoy a healthy dose of snowfall.

However, like any kind of naturally occurring event, it can be difficult to assume how much snowfall an area will receive. Your best bet when it comes to a South African snowy adventure, is to keep tabs on the social media pages of snowfall spots, in tandem with local weather services.

Meanwhile in other news from Mother Nature that made us smile, the Augrabies Falls National Park has experienced a powerful increase in water volumes recently thanks to all the rainfall in our country; making the spot a water wonder! Find out more, here.

Some weeks are for surviving… but Fridays? Fridays are for thriving and the Friday Five is your backstage pass to everything worth watching, listening to, sipping and celebrating right now.

South Africa (02 May 2025) – Fridays hit differently. They just do… even when it’s a Friday “Oreod” between a public holiday and a pending early start to the weekend. There’s something in the air. A little whisper of freedom, the promise of a slower morning, a night out with friends or just catching up on the good stuff you’ve been meaning to get to all week.

And that’s exactly what The Friday Five is about.

It’s one of my absolute favourite things I get to do on Good Things Guy. Not because it’s wildly complicated or news-breaking but because it’s real. It’s personal. It’s where I get to sit down, take a breath and share all the things I’ve discovered, loved, been moved by or just think you might enjoy too.

This is your pocket-sized guide to what’s vibing right now in movies, series, music, food, places and everything in between. And because I’m lucky enough to be invited to advance screenings, album previews, foodie experiences and just generally cool stuff, you get the inside scoop… straight from me to you.

So, deep breath. Warm beverage (or a cold one, we don’t judge). Let’s go.

🎬 Movies That Made Me Feel Something

🎥 Thunderbolts*

Marvel’s had a bumpy few years. Let’s not pretend otherwise. The internet’s been harsh, fans have been divided and some of the sparkle seemed to fade. But Thunderbolts* feels like a little reset in the Marvel-verse. A reminder of why we fell in love with the MCU in the first place.

The story follows a ragtag group of morally grey characters – Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, Red Guardian, Ghost, Taskmaster, John Walker and Bob – forced into a deadly mission that drags up every skeleton in their respective closets. It’s intense, messy, and wildly human.

What struck me wasn’t just the action (which is top-tier) but the emotional core. It’s about redemption. About confronting your past. About choosing who you want to be… even when the world tells you it’s too late to change. The mental health aspect was prevelant throughout the entire film.

It made me laugh out loud. It made me gasp. And yes, I cried… more than once. The best part is it has all those Marvel Easter eggs we love but I won’t spoil them here. Because honestly, you deserve to discover it all for yourself.

Just trust me: watch it in a cinema (released today). With surround sound. With popcorn. With the full experience of what some critics are calling the best Marvel film since Endgame.

🍸 Another Simple Favor

It’s deliciously absurd. And that’s exactly what makes it brilliant.

If you watched A Simple Favor back in 2018 and thought “well, that was a trip”… buckle up. Another Simple Favor is back with Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick. This time set on the scenic island of Capri.

The plot is absolutely bonkers. There’s a wedding. There’s a murder. There’s betrayal. And there’s more martinis than anyone needs. But that’s the point. It’s ridiculous on purpose. And it knows exactly what it’s doing.

And we know that Blake Lively might put you off seeing this movie (hello, It Ends With Us controversy) but don’t let that overshadow this little chaotic gem. It delivers exactly what it promises: glossy drama, dark humour and Anna Kendrick being the lovable trainwreck we all root for. Pour yourself a drink. Suspend your disbelief. And enjoy the ride.

📺 Some Series For The Weekend

🩸 YOU – Season 5

Ah Joe Goldberg… the literary stalker we love to hate and hate to admit we’re fascinated by.

Season 5 marks the final chapter in Joe’s twisted journey and it does so with more depth, more self-awareness and surprisingly, more heart than you’d expect.

There’s reflection. There’s reckoning. There’s a haunting exploration of what happens after you get everything you think you want. The writing is tighter. The pacing is sharp. And the acting is phenomenal.

For a show that’s been walking the line between thriller and psychological horror, this final season brings a bit of humanity back into focus. And it sticks the landing beautifully.

Now streaming on Netflix.

📱 Black Mirror – Season 7

Black Mirror is the kind of show that punches you in the brain and then hands you a mirror. And this new season is no exception.

Over the past few weeks, I rewatched all the previous episodes (yes, all of them) to prepare. And diving into Season 7 felt like reuniting with an old, slightly terrifying friend.

Each episode explores some deeply uncomfortable “what ifs” of tech, society, surveillance, and identity. But it’s not just shock value… these are nuanced stories. They’re layered with ethical dilemmas, existential dread and flashes of uncomfortable truth. It’s satire meets science fiction meets social commentary. It makes you think. It stays with you. And it’s some of the most important modern storytelling we have right now.

Now streaming on Netflix.

🎶 Songs That Stirred My Soul

📞 Ed Sheeran – “Old Phone”

It’s quiet. Intimate. Raw. It feels like reading someone else’s diary and realising it’s yours too. We often think we have time. Time to say sorry. Time to reconnect. Time to show up. But sometimes, we don’t. “Old Phone” is a reminder to make the call. Fix the thing. Say the words.

🎤 Kelly Clarkson – “Where Have You Been”

Powerful vocals. Honest lyrics. It’s Kelly doing what Kelly does best… making us feel things we didn’t know we were carrying.

🌱 Sugababes – “Weeds”

A comeback track with teeth. It’s got that signature blend of pop and edge but this time with a maturity and self-awareness that hits harder. It’s nostalgic and fresh.

Also, I’ve now curated all these gems into a playlist on Apple Music! So if you’re looking for good vibes and soulful sounds to accompany your day, give it a spin. (Apologies to my Spotify peeps, but I’m team Apple.) Trust me, you’ll want these tracks on repeat all weekend.

☕ Places That Got GLobal Love (And Deserved It)

The World’s 100 Best Coffee Shops for 2025 were just announced… and two South African cafés made the list. Not as an afterthought. As serious contenders.

Espressolab – Cape Town (ranked #11 in the world)

This isn’t just a coffee shop. It’s a love letter to coffee. Nestled in the heart of Woodstock’s Old Biscuit Mill, Espressolab has built a cult following by taking coffee seriously but without the snobbery. It’s minimalist, sleek and curated. You walk in and feel like something important is about to happen. Because it is.

Their small-batch roasts? Meticulously sourced. Their process? Scientific. Their product? Pure artistry. And now, the world’s coffee elite are taking notice.

The Whippet – Johannesburg (ranked #89 in the world)

This Linden-based gem is part café, part community haven. It’s warm, inviting and filled with stories… old and new. You don’t just go there for a coffee; you go for a connection.

Their Linden Blend is roasted locally, their menu celebrates heritage with a modern twist and the vibe is nothing short of soul-nourishing. From the buttermilk chicken benedict to the legendary milk tart, everything feels familiar and elevated at the same time. And now it’s on the world stage. Right where it belongs.

🎙 A Personal Note

I’ve been podcasting for 11 years. From makeshift setups in cupboards to studio-grade magic… and right now, I’m more in love with it than I’ve ever been.

2025 has been the biggest glow-up yet.

Thanks to Nando’s, who saw the vision and said “Let’s do it,” we’ve levelled up in every way. We’re using world-class studios (FLAME 🔥), we’ve built a dream team and we’ve transitioned from audio-only to a full vidcast experience.

And YOU made it all possible.

We’ve dropped just three episodes so far… and we’ve already crossed half a million views and listens each. It’s WILD.

This week’s guest was the brilliant Elana Afrika-Bredenkamp. A storyteller. A powerhouse. And a voice that feels like home. I think you’re going to love this episode.

Find it by searching “Good Things with Brent Lindeque” on any platform… or hit YouTube if you want to watch the magic unfold.

That’s that. Friday Five done and dusted… I want to remind you that even though the world may be messy, joy still exists. Good things are still happening.

And you… you’re allowed to enjoy them.

Thanks for reading. Thanks for being here. And thank you, always, for choosing kindness, laughter and hope.

Until next Friday… stay lekker.

If your email inbox is quieter than a Karoo farm at midnight, you can thank South Africa’s public holiday season. But here’s a fun fact: while we’re soaking up the long weekends, many other countries are celebrating even more days off than we are!

South Africa (29 April 2025) – If you’re reading this while sipping coffee (or a mimosa) in your gown at 12pm on a weekday… then chances are, you planned your April (and every single Public Holiday) like a boss. Thanks to some clever calendar magic, South Africans who used just seven days of annual leave scored a glorious 17-day break this year.

That’s right. Seventeen whole days! A full-on staycation, vacation or “do absolutely nothing” holiday, all without emptying your leave balance. Legendary.

And with Easter, Freedom Day and Workers’ Day all lining up like friendly dominos, it might feel like South Africa has more public holidays than anyone else on Earth. But surprise! We’re actually pretty middle-of-the-road. South Africans officially get 12 public holidays a year, which is perfectly average when compared globally. We’re not hoarding holidays and we’re certainly not being short-changed. We’re just right.

But some countries have truly turned public holidays into an art form.

Leading the pack, India boasts an incredible 42 public holidays this year, with Nepal close behind at 35, and Iran securing third place with 26. When a country embraces multiple religions and cultures, there’s almost always a reason to celebrate… and clearly, they do it well! Even tiny Liechtenstein punches well above its weight, offering 22 days off, while Hong Kong keeps the party going with 17 public holidays a year.

On the other end of the scale, some countries play it a bit cooler. Vietnam officially has just 6 public holidays, but one of them, Tết (Lunar New Year), turns into a week-long national festival. The United States is a mixed bag depending on the state, with some Americans only getting 6 to 8 days off a year. And over in England and Wales, the UK counts a modest 8 annual bank holidays… which might explain why Brits treat an unexpected extra day off like a national event!

So where do we sit?

Right in the Goldilocks zone. Not too many, not too few, just enough to refresh, reconnect and remember what matters. We share this title (of 12 public holidays) with countries like Italy, Sweden, New Zealand Egypt and Taiwan. And even though it may feel like we’re permanently on “Out of Office” lately, the truth is, South Africa’s holiday game is actually pretty balanced. We work hard and we celebrate just as hard. Whether it’s a long weekend adventure or just a lazy morning at home, South Africans have mastered the art of making memories with every extra day we’re given. And we are thankful for it.

But obviously, some might want more time off. And that’s more than okay… we’ve got you covered. Every year (in January) we publish our guide to maximising your leave. And this year still has one very long weekend to maximise. Click here for your cheat code.

You’re welcome… and happy holidays!

Mary Hoaeane from Khayelitsha is one of many “gogos” feeling the benefit of her work featuring South Africa’s leading travel hubs.

South Africa (29 April 2025) – In the evolving landscape of global travel, transit hubs have transformed from mere waypoints to powerful engines of economic growth and community development. These bustling centres serve as crucial platforms for job creation, innovation incubation, and cultural exchange, making them vital to the communities they serve. As travel infrastructure adapts to meet modern expectations of convenience and experience, the impact of these hubs extends far beyond travel facilitation.

At Relate Bracelets, we’ve seen firsthand how places of transit – especially airports – can be more than just gateways to new destinations. They can be powerful agents of change. Through thoughtful partnerships and people-first initiatives, travel hubs have the potential to create dignity through work, spark entrepreneurship, and connect local communities with the world in meaningful ways.

Across South Africa, transit hubs like O.R. Tambo and Cape Town International Airports are transforming into more than just places to catch a flight. They’re evolving into vibrant economic ecosystems that breathe life into surrounding communities. Every plane that lands or lifts off helps generate employment; from hospitality and logistics to security, retail, cleaning, and maintenance – creating ripple effects that sustain thousands of households. For many, especially in previously underserved communities, these opportunities can be life-changing.

Where movement sparks meaning

But the impact goes deeper than numbers or job titles. Transit hubs are melting pots of people, ideas, and cultures. With this constant convergence comes the chance to reimagine how we connect, not just through travel, but through shared experiences and values. When travel intersects with local enterprise and social purpose, something special happens: innovation takes root in very human ways.

We’ve had the privilege of seeing this meaningful connection come to life through Relate Bracelets’ ongoing partnership with retailers at Cape Town International Airport and O.R. Tambo International Airport. This collaboration has created a unique platform to share our purpose-driven products with a global audience, offering travellers an opportunity to engage with authentic, handmade beadwork while directly supporting local artisans and the communities they belong to. This partnership has enabled us to introduce our handmade beaded bracelets, lovingly crafted by gogos (grandmothers), youth, and other community members, to a global audience. Each bracelet sold is more than just a beautiful keepsake; it carries the fingerprint of a real person, a story of resilience, and the shared dream of a better future.

One of those stories belongs to Mary Hoaeane from Khayelitsha. After the uncertainty brought on by COVID-19, Mary joined the non-profit Ikamva Labantu and began crafting bracelets for Relate. For Mary, the work became a lifeline, not just financially but emotionally. It gave her a renewed sense of purpose, a supportive community, and a daily reason to smile. “We uplift one another,” she says, describing the bond between the women she works with every day. Her story is a moving reminder that meaningful work can offer more than income; it can offer dignity, joy, and a renewed sense of belonging.

What makes stories like Mary’s even more powerful is that they’re shared with travellers who often seek more than just souvenirs. Modern travellers crave authenticity. They want to engage with local culture, support meaningful causes, and return home with something that tells a deeper story. Our bracelets offer them that; a tangible piece of South Africa, woven with care, heritage, and hope.

Collaboration as the catalyst

Of course, none of this happens in a vacuum. The full potential of travel hubs can only be unlocked through collaboration. When businesses, government, non-profits, and communities come together with a shared purpose, airports and other transit spaces become more than infrastructure; they become engines for transformation. Whether it’s by prioritising local hiring, supporting small businesses, offering skills training, or creating retail spaces that reflect the country’s diversity, there are endless ways to design transit spaces that uplift the people who live around them.

Successful partnerships recognise and leverage the complementary strengths of different stakeholders. Transit operators bring infrastructure and traveller flows, businesses provide commercial expertise and capital, government agencies contribute policy support and coordination, and community organisations offer local knowledge and workforce connections. Together, these partners can create integrated development approaches that maximise community benefit.

Collaborations deliver multiple benefits simultaneously. Travellers gain access to authentic products and experiences that reflect local identity. Community members secure meaningful employment and income-generation opportunities. Businesses establish differentiated offerings that appeal to experience-seeking travellers. And transit hubs strengthen their position as valued community assets rather than isolated infrastructure.

Moving South Africa forward

We believe in putting people and purpose at the centre of everything we do. And we believe transit hubs have the power to do the same. These spaces can become places of inclusion, pride, and empowerment, not only facilitating movement but stimulating connection, opportunity, and growth.

Airports – and the communities within and around them – rely on purpose-driven retailers to connect with “transumers” seeking more than just convenience. Through initiatives that champion conscious consumption, they offer products with soul, authenticity, and impact, creating meaningful moments for both local and international travellers passing through their terminals. Because the best journeys don’t just take us places – they bring us closer to purpose.
