Once struggling to find a job after school, Minenhle Simelane turned to his grandmother’s mat-making machine to craft something truly special: mats made from discarded waste!

Durban, South Africa (29 May 2025) – To transform discarded plastic waste into unique, handmade products, promoting sustainability and environmental conservation. This is the powerful motivation behind Minenhle Simelane’s colourful and stunning mats made from plastic and other waste.

Originally from rural eShowe and currently residing in Durban, Minenhle matriculated from Embizweni High School in 2018.

After facing challenges with unemployment, he chose to create mats from waste materials as a way to make ends meet and creatively contribute to environmental conservation.

Drawing inspiration from his grandmother, he used the Imbongolo (mat-making machine) to make these mats from waste collected from the roadside, rivers or dumpsites.

Over time, he found purpose in transforming discarded plastic waste into beautiful, handmade products, which in turn help him make money and address the alarming rate of plastic consumption.

With the increasing demand for mats this year, Minenhle has taken on four workers under his wing and is working towards developing his business. In his own words, “trash has created jobs and brought smiles to their faces”.

In support of Minenhle’s journey of using artistic expression to save the environment, Woza Moya stocks his mats for the public to view and purchase at the Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust (HACT).

Moving forward, he hopes to grow his business and generate more job opportunities, fuelled by the growing demand for his eco-friendly products.

It is so inspiring to see young people not only make the most of their circumstances but also contribute to preserving the planet we all share in such creative ways. We wish you all the success, Minenhle!

Budding bookworms in the Valley of 1000 Hills, near Durban will get to enjoy the enriching and wholesome goodness of educational books thanks to a generous donation made by the Denis Hurley Street Lit Project!

KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (03 April 2025) – A heartwarming initiative is bringing the magic of educational books to sixty children in the Valley of 1000 Hills!

Thanks to a generous donation from the Denis Hurley Street Lit Project, the Isithumba Travels Adventure Park will now house a collection of captivating books focused on conservation, wildlife, and tourism for the 60 children who visit iSithumba Adventures after school each day, offering them an opportunity to explore the wonders of nature, sustainability, and the world beyond their village.

Isithumba Travels Adventure Park falls under the umbrella of the Isithumba Community Development Movement (ICDM), a community-based youth-driven initiative that aims to uplift and empower the youth of this community.

The Park is not only an adventure tourism destination, but it is also a space where the local community benefits from sustainable initiatives that improve education, environmental awareness, and economic opportunities.

With limited access to libraries in rural areas, many children in iSithumba lack the resources to develop strong reading habits. This donation changes that by providing an informal learning space where they can immerse themselves in books that inspire curiosity, creativity, and a deeper understanding of the environment.

“We are so excited to start our library and to give children a chance to read books that stimulate curiosity and a love for the natural world,” says Amimi Mlaba, owner and manager of iSithumba Travels.

“By giving them access to these books that teach them about wildlife and the environment, we are nurturing a new generation that will care for and protect our natural heritage. This works towards our aim to use tourism as a force for positive change.”

Street Lit is a successful initiative of the Durban NGO Denis Hurley Centre, which cares for the city’s homeless, vulnerable, and refugee communities and helps homeless people work towards becoming financially sustainable.

Touching on the book donation, the manager of the StreetLit project, Illa Thompson, explained that it has always been the charity’s philosophy that any books which are surplus to its requirements or are better suited to be appreciated in a specialist library context are gifted to places where they can be enjoyed.

“We are especially mindful of the limited access many people have to books outside of the city hub and major malls. Knowing about this project, we have been setting aside books which we thought would benefit the children who are being mentored at the centre around tourism, conservation and environmental sustainability, and together with the Street Lit booksellers, we felt it would be hugely beneficial to these youngsters in this community.”

Donations of quality, current, good-condition books for the Denis Hurley Centre St Lit project are always welcome. For more information, contact the Centre on 031 301 2240.

Every day, Qhawe and his mother walked long stretches, navigating a rural KZN landscape to ensure he could attend creche. But when he struggled to stay awake in class, his principal reached out for help that would greatly change this little boy’s life.

Hillcrest, South Africa (03 April 2025) – Last week, our hearts were touched by a story of a young boy who had to walk two hours to and from school every day as his mother couldn’t afford transport costs.

This week, we’re just as moved by a very similar testimony of a little boy whose mother walked and carried him on her back every day on long walks just to get to creche.

Often arriving at school feeling very tired and barely able to stay awake throughout the day, Qhawe soon had his principal, Nontobeko Gwamanda of Siyadumisa Day Care, concerned about his wellbeing. She soon paid a visit to his home, which proved to be a lengthy distance that manoeuvred through a rural village within the Valley of 1000 Hills. She was surprised at how far the little boy had to walk just to get to school.

Nontobeko soon reached out to Project Hope SA to share Qhawe’s everyday struggles, setting in motion a wave of relief to the destitute family.

Qhawe not only received assistance with transport to get to and from school, but a bursary as well, bringing joy to his mother who now also helps out at the school’s garden and receives vegetables to take back home.

With the understanding that 90% of brain development occurs in the early years and that preschool lays the foundation for a brighter future, the Project Hope Children’s Sponsorship Programme has given young Qhawe a better chance to flourish.

Now, this little guy’s tiny feet have found much-needed relief, and his life has been forever changed!

iThemba’s Closet, the Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust’s charity thrift store, run by dedicated volunteers, offers a selection of gently used clothing. Every purchase directly supports crucial hospice and palliative care services for patients facing life-limiting illnesses.

Durban, South Africa (25 March 2025) – Within the Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust (HACT) training rooms, there is a heartwarming hub of hope brewing for the community, and it’s in the form of a closet!

The iThemba’s Closet is the charity’s thrift store dedicated to supporting the organisation’s vital hospice and palliative care services.

Operated by a dedicated team of volunteers, iThemba’s Closet offers a curated selection of gently used clothing for men, women, teens, and children. It has quickly become a happy shop, bringing new visitors to HACT!

“Each purchase directly contributes to the care of patients in HACT’s Palliative Care & Hospice Unit, providing comfort and care to those facing life-limiting illnesses including late-stage cancer and AIDS,” shares HACT’s Marketing Manager Nokulunga Shozi.

With growing operations, the HACT team hopes to secure a permanent location to accommodate its growing operations. Plans are underway to secure a more spacious venue, ensuring iThemba’s Closet can continue to serve the community effectively.

“HACT would like to open the Closet more regularly as community members often arrive looking for cost-effective clothing, but unfortunately the Closet only receives enough clothing for once-a-month sales,” Nokulunga says.

To help keep its doors open while supporting a noble cause, community members are encouraged to donate clothing and volunteer their time to support iThemba’s Closet.

“With the extreme cuts to global HIV and AIDS funding, these contributions are vital to HACT’s ongoing services and vision of healthy, empowered and AIDS-free communities.”

The community is also invited to join the celebration at HACT’s Friday Late-Shopping event this Friday, March 28, as iThemba’s Closet will be open from 10 am to 7 pm. HACT’s Plant Nursery, Ubuntu Ground Café and Woza Moya shops will also be open, and there will be an Exhibition Opening featuring the work of talented local Art Interns.

For more information on how to get involved or to shop for a cause, visit HACT’s official website or follow their social media channels for updates on store hours and upcoming events.

Clayton Mpetiwa faced numerous challenges in his life, including financial hardship and losing his truck driving job during the pandemic. Not one to keep his head down for long, he turned back to his love for art, honing his skills to create unique pieces which are gaining recognition.

Hillcrest, South Africa (16 January 2025) – Born into a not-so-comfortable life that required him to grow up very quickly and develop a hustler’s mindset, Clayton Mpetiwa often found solace in the intricacies of art and beadwork.

Growing up in Zimbabwe, he faced financial struggles, but his remarkable talent for drawing shone through from a young age.

After relocating to South Africa, he initially worked as a truck driver. However, when the Covid-19 pandemic changed the routine of life as he knew it, he decided to dive back into his passion for art.

Influenced by sculptor Tafi Aartz, known for turning the mundane into the remarkable, Clayton started producing beautiful and one-of-a-kind artworks to sell and make ends meet.

With the support of Woza Moya & Friends, he found the perfect platform to showcase his work, leading to a blossoming career as an emerging artist. Clayton’s story is a testament to the power of following one’s passion, even in the face of adversity.

Inspired by his surroundings, Clayton believes that art exists everywhere if one has a keen eye. As for his creative process? He observes an image and then reimagines it through his art, challenging himself to recreate unique shapes and designs.

According to Woza Moya, one of his signature creations is an owl he crafted in 2014 for a client in Cape Town. This piece kickstarted his journey and allowed him to refine his skills over time.

The Woza Moya Artists’ Wall extends its thanks to the 100% Foundation for their continued support and sponsorship, which makes the Artist’s Wall, where Clayton’s work is currently displayed, a monthly event possible.

Imagine getting to hike through ice tunnels and sleeping outside at -17°C! L’chelle Bester got to experience it all through a once-in-a-lifetime Antarctic expedition with four other amazing students from around Africa. The experience afforded the KZN teen the learning experience of the environment and the interconnectedness of climate change.

Antarctica (10 January 2025) – “Genuinely the most insane experience of my life!”. That is how L’chelle Bester best describes the amazing opportunity to join explorer Riaan Manser on the Students in Antarctica expedition in December.

Good Things Guy shared about her selection as one of five learners across Africa to travel and explore the icy continent and all its environmental significance.

We recently caught up with the eco-minded changemaker who shared all about the once-in-a-lifetime trip, which has greatly inspired her.

“The Antarctic landscapes were breathtaking, but the best part of the trip was who I got to share it with,” L’chelle shares.

“Getting to know the other four students selected (from Ghana, Tanzania, Italy and South Africa) was by far my favourite part. Our diverse backgrounds made for fascinating conversations and many laughs.”

The group travelled with ‘educators’ comprised of one of the top environmental lawyers in South Africa, a genetic scientist studying sub-Antarctic zoo-plankton, a decorated documentary filmmaker, an electrical engineer working on making Antarctica solar-powered, an Ichthyology expert who hunts down illegal fishing vessels, as well as Riaan Manser himself, the programme’s founder who has casually circumnavigated Africa on a bicycle.

“I learnt so much from each of them – each person had astronomical value to offer and left an indelible imprint on me,” recounts L’chelle.

The trip included several epic highlights, such as running a half marathon, hiking through ice tunnels, visiting an ice wall, and sleeping outside without tents in -17°C temperatures. The students also baked cupcakes, took cold plunges, and had plenty of snowball fights—truly an adventurer’s dream come true!

L’chelle’s biggest takeaway from the expedition has been the realisation of how complicated and interconnected climate change problems are.

“No problem can be solved in isolation – it’s all part of a system. In the same way in nature when you remove one small animal from the food chain everything is thrown out of proportion and ecosystems are drastically affected – trying to solve any part of the climate change problem has a knock-on effect on other issues.”

She illustrates how using paper straws rather than plastic straws reduces plastic consumption. However, this shift increases the demand for paper and contributes to deforestation, leading to higher CO2 emissions.

Looking forward, the Grade 12 Curro learner hopes to study Mechatronic Engineering after school to equip herself with the technical skills needed to turn project ideas into realities.

“I’m also really interested in the social justice and policymaking side of things, so I hope to do a post-graduate in law after my engineering.

“I think the intersection of the two fields – understanding the social and technical side of things will be what enables me to make a real change in whatever I decide to pursue long-term,” shares a very driven L’chelle.

Watch out, world; L’chelle is ready to make a difference!

L’chelle Bester, a smart and eco-conscious teen from Hillcrest, is off to Antarctica! She was picked from thousands of young people across Africa to join explorer Riaan Manser on an awesome adventure on the southernmost point of the planet!

Hillcrest, South Africa (09 December 2024) – L’chelle Bester is making waves as an environmentally conscious changemaker! The young innovator is one of only five students selected from across Africa to join explorer Riaan Manser on the Students in Antarctica expedition this December.

The exciting competition sees eco-minded young people from the continent submitting a video about an environmental sustainability project they’re working on.

The top 20 are shortlisted, then the top 10 finalists are announced, and finally, the top 5 are selected to join Manser on his annual expedition.

L’chelle’s passion for the planet is out of this world. She’s already working on a cool app to help her schoolmates track their community service hours, inspiring them to see the impact of their efforts on the environment.

The Curro Hillcrest Grade 11 learner’s dream is to create a beach-cleaning robot that targets microplastics, combining technology and innovation to fight climate change.

The trip aims to show the top 5 learners why Antarctica is such an important ecosystem that impacts the world and its environment.

“I’ve been following Students in Antarctica for three years now, just waiting for my turn to come around,” enthuses Bester.

“Not only will it be the experience of a lifetime, but I believe a trip like this is something you can’t return the same from. That’s what I’m seeking – growth.”

She and the other top 5 learners were selected for demonstrating the qualities of authenticity, analytical thinking, willingness to learn, love for their own communities, practicality about affecting change in their backyard, and optimism for creating positive change.

From December 11th to 20th, L’chelle and four other lucky winners will experience the icy beauty of Antarctica, learn about climate change, and work together to protect our planet.

Her school congratulated her on her amazing achievement, noting that through her creativity, passion, and dedication to environmental causes, L’chelle has shown that she is ready to represent South Africa on this transformative journey.

Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust (HACT) invites the community to participate in a poignant tribute to loved ones lost to AIDS and cancer this year. This Friday, HACT will unveil its first-ever Tree of Remembrance, a beautiful symbol of hope and remembrance in commemoration of World AIDS Day.

Hillcrest, South Africa (26 November 2024) – Ahead of World AIDS Day on 1 December, Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust (HACT) invites the community to “light up a memory” in a touching tribute to loved ones who are no longer with us.

This Friday evening, 29 November, HACT will unveil its very first Tree of Remembrance on Old Main Road, a poignant commemoration of lives lost, particularly in the face of late-stage AIDS and cancer.

The ceremony will serve as a heartfelt tribute to those who have passed within the Centre’s Respite & Palliative Care Unit over the past year and a reminder of the strength and resilience of the community.

For R50, supporters can honour their loved ones by purchasing a globe to place on the tree, symbolising both remembrance and hope. Each globe will help fund essential care for patients within the Centre, directly benefiting individuals and families in need.

“The lights on our Tree of Remembrance are more than just a tribute—they’re a beacon of unconditional love and hope, which is HACT’s mission,” shares Candace Moolman, HACT’s CEO.

“We’ve had a challenging year at HACT and have lost patients, staff and volunteers, and we know many others have also experienced loss. We encourage our community to join us in celebrating lives, sharing memories, and shining a light on the journey of healing and support.”

Annual candle lighting ceremony

There organisation’s annual candle lighting ceremony will also be observed that same Friday morning to honour and remember the 69 lives lost in the Unit over the past year.

HACT’s Chief Executive Officer, Candace Moolman, shares that while there has been substantial progress made in the HIV response, there remains a risk these can be lost due to funding and capacity shortages. She stresses the need to ‘own’ the issue of HIV and AIDS to ensure the gains over the past decades aren’t lost.

“There is an international call to link progress to human rights and a strengthening of health systems. To end AIDS there is a need to reach and engage everyone who is living with, at risk of or affected by HIV, especially those who have been excluded or marginalised.

“This is an issue of political will and action, corporate responsibility, gender equality, acceptance, respect and care for everyone. Anything less than this will obstruct access to HIV prevention, testing and meaningful response. Part of protecting everyone’s health is by protecting and advocating for everyone’s rights,” explains Moolman.

As World AIDS Day approaches, Moolman advocates for a collective approach in pushing forward for progress towards HIV goals to avoid many lives being vulnerable and, sadly, lost.

“Change does not depend on a moment but on a movement. HACT is proudly continuing its work and advocacy toward our vision of healthy, empowered and AIDS-free communities.”

HACT thanks its partners and supporters who continue to support and strengthen its holistic services to address HIV and AIDS.

The public is invited to attend both the annual candle lighting (at 10 am) and the Tree of Remembrance ceremony (6.30 pm) on 29 November at 26 Old Main Road in Hillcrest, KZN.

The special event is a call to celebrate life, share a memory and shine a light of unconditional love and hope.
