Against their will, Grace and Thomas Khumalo’s braai area turned into an Airbnb for owls in what has become a hilarious series of events that has seen the same owl family come back to the braai time and time again.

Gauteng, South Africa (29 May 2025) — The first time the Khumalo’s realised they were unknowingly running an Airbnb for Owls, it was a bit of a drama and an event; Thomas and Grace Khumalo thought it would be a one-time thing.

In May last year, it was revealed that the Khumalo’s built-in braai had been chosen by a breeding pair of Barn Owls as the perfect accommodation to raise their fledglings. None-the-wiser, the human couple were caught completely off guard when they discovered the feathered family (it’s not every day three owls choose your braai to nest, after all).

Enter wildlife rescuer and accidental owl concierge Shawn Hefer.

As the South African Wildlife Rehabilitation Center recall, Shawn arrived to help both families and “with the air of someone who’s opened one too many owl filled ovens, Shawn calmly approached the braai door. The moment he opened it, one of the three owls launched itself into the room in a flurry of wings and indignation.”

Shawn caught the owl carefully while a shocked Grace watched the scene unfold.

Eventually, the owls were taken to their new (and far more fitting accommodation) at the Owl Rescue Centre.

However, this was not the last the Khumalo’s would see of their owl guests. Fast forward to this year, and guess who came back for another stay in the braai?

“The same feathered squatters, clearly feeling nostalgic (or just opportunistic), returned for round two after discovering the chimney was still blissfully unmeshed. (Hey.. If it ain’t blocked, why stop the flock)?” The South African Wildlife Rehabilitation Center shared.

This time, a teen owl (a young fledgling) had made himself at home, and Shawn once again got the Khumalo’s call.

This rescue was an easier effort as Shawn set the fledging on the ground and watched him fly off into the sunset.

But, he’d clearly given the braai a five-star review, as just a few weeks later, another female fledging popped by!

“When the third owl-related WhatsApp lit up on Shawn Hefer’s phone, he didn’t even blink. He just burst out laughing. Of course it was Grace and Thomas. Of course it was another Barn owl in their braai. (At this stage, we’re considering a loyalty card)!” The South African Wildlife Rehabilitation Center commented.

Hot on the case again, the owl was carefully moved from her accommodation and into the rehabilitation centre’s clinic to join other fledglings.

The urgency to mesh the area had never been more clear to the Khumalo’s.

As the SA Wildlife Rehabilitation Center share in reference to meshing the chimney,

“Thomas, with a weary smile and the haunted look of a man who’s learned the hard way that owls will be back, promised to sort it out.”

Who has to worry about Jolene when there’s a tractor named Betsie on the scene? A hilarious ‘interview’ revealed a love triangle we hope other spouses of farmers can’t relate to.

Somewhere on a Farm, South Africa (23 May 2025) — “I know men ‘aren’t allowed to cry, but there were times when she pulled me through the drought. When I was weak she was strong for me.” You’d be forgiven for thinking these to be the words of a doting partner, and in some ways you’d be right… if said partner was a farmer and if the ‘she’ was a tractor named Betsie. A hilarious advert recently played up a farmer’s true love triangle, and we’re not sure if it’s going to increase tractor sales or cause a series of ‘we need to talk’ moments.

In the advert, a farmer named Gerrie sits down with his wife to talk about love. However, things start to take a turn for the comedic when the audience realises he’s talking about his love for Betsie the tractor, while his wife thinks his loving words are about her.

“I can’t imagine life on the farm without her,” could’ve been a great way to show love to your wife Gerrie, but it just had to be about Betsie, didn’t it?

If this ad is relatable to those married to farmers, let us know in the comments (and please let us know how you deal!)

Meanwhile, in other videos that made us giggle this week, an American tried his first Grand-Pa in a bid to relieve a headache. Unfortunately for him, the local pain reliever might’ve given him a whole new flavour of headache in what has become a public service announcement not to try your first Grand-Pa in the powder format, without water and or if you’re not built like a South African. Have a watch, here.

A South African staple versus an American with a headache. Recently, a South African-in-training put a Grand-Pa to the test. And we all know who won…

South Africa (20 May 2025) — It’s hard to fathom that most of the world beyond South Africa doesn’t instinctively raid their cupboards for a Grand-Pa when a headache or hangover strikes. But, in case you didn’t know, the pain relief staple is actually a South African brand (which is probably why your foreign co-workers keep looking at you weirdly when you ask them for a grandpa whilst clutching your head in pain, wondering what an elderly man could possibly do to help).

In a recent hilarious video, American Addi Logan decided to put Grand-Pa to the test.

You might recognise Addi from another hit video that depicted his review of South African desserts! While Addi’s dessert taste test saw South African treats (at least most of them) pass with flying colours, the same couldn’t be said for the pain-reliever.

Armed with a glass of water and a look of concern in his eyes, Addi embarked a little too bravely with the powder version of the product. He shared that his wife doesn’t take her doses with water (a true South African), before proceeding to attempt his own dose water-free.

Now, nobody has ever accused Grand-Pas of tasting like icing sugar. So it wasn’t unusual for Addi’s face to morph into a look of disgust when he threw the powder into the back of his throat (we couldn’t help but laugh —someone help this man!).

He then attempted to infuse it with water, which, once again, left his face morphing and South Africans trying not to laugh.

Needless to say, this might be the American’s last shot at looking to Grand-Pa for relief. However, several South Africans raced to the comment section to defend the staple, with some suggesting Coca-Cola as the key factor and others expressing that “This is how Home Affairs knows you’re not ready [to be a South African].”

South African comedian Schalk Bezuidenhout is training for his first-ever Comrades. And, he’s learnt a lot from the utility of the word ‘tapering’ when you don’t know what else to say to the wise sages of Comrades past who seem to relish in acting as vague as a fortune cookie of fear and advice. Watch Schalk’s hilarious take on it all:

South Africa (18 May 2025) — South African comedian Schalk Bezuidenhout is among the many rookie racers preparing to take on the upcoming Comrades Marathon for the very first time. And, amid the many lessons Schalk has learned (like how far 80kms actually is and why the word ‘tapering’ is a fast ticket to sounding like you know what you’re talking about in a group of runners), he’s also interacted with the ‘Comrades Fortune Cookies’.

A Comrades ‘Fortune Cookie’ is someone who has completed the race and proceeds to give a rookie runner vague, alarming, and somewhat riddled advice, including (but not limited to) “After halfway, you find out who you truly are.”

Schalk recently made some updates on his training, with a video dedicated entirely to the ‘Comrades Fortune Cookies’ and their scary warnings.

“They will make it their mission to put the fear of God in you. They’ll go, ‘oh is it your first Comrades?’ and you go, ‘yeah no it’s my first one, I’m very excited’. And they’ll go (with an expression as if they’ve just seen a ghost), “I remember my first one… good luck, that’s all I can say. Good luck. And then they run into a bush and disappear forever,” remarks Schalk.

The comedian even hilariously compared these sages to Dumbledore from Harry Potter, who never really let the kid know what was actually going on but made sure to give vague warnings at a whim.

If you’ve ever been tricked into trying wasabi, this one’s for you. Recently, a lovely lady named Anna tried tempura sushi for the first time, and an unfriendly ‘avo’ (it was wasabi)…

Outeniqua, South Africa (12 May 2025) — If you’ve ever been tricked into trying ‘spicy sushi avo’ (wasabi), you’ll know the pain that a lovely lady named Anna recently cry-laughed through.

As sushi lovers know well, wasabi is an important component of the culinary journey that is raw fish.

A Japanese horseradish condiment, wasabi is not just a zing for the sake of it. It has anti-bacterial properties and immune-boosting flair and helps bring out the flavour of the fish.

However, for a first-timer, it’s a spicy new flavour, to say the least.

Anna from Spar Outeniqua (whose content never disappoints) recently sat down for a tempura sushi taste test for the first time. While Anna rated the sushi as a 10/10 serving, the real fun (and pain) came into play when she was prompted to try the ‘avo’.

Poor Anna took a big mouthful of the green demon. In fact, she popped the entire serving of wasabi into her mouth at once!

Initially feeling smug in thinking the taste would be avo-esque, Anna’s happy face quickly turned into one of hilarious distress when she realised that this was not what she had signed up for.

With a decent yell and watering eyes, Anna fought the wasabi bravely before getting the condiment out of her mouth and, potentially, out of her memory.

Meanwhile, in other taste test news with far less spicy connotations, an American recently gave South African desserts a whirl with some questionable pronunciation. You can have a watch and a giggle, here.

Apparently, Cape Town moms are soft-spoken and wake up early to gracefully prepare homemade sourdough for their beloved families, whereas stressed-out Joburg moms need a coffee just to function. The accuracy is debatable, of course, but this video by Troy Sheperds is a cracker!

Cape Town, South Africa (11 May 2025) – Apparently, Cape Town stay-at-home moms are a lot more in touch with their calmer side than those in Johannesburg.

This is according to a hilarious video by content creator, Troy Sheperds, who impersonated moms from Cape Town versus those from Johannesburg and how they respond to their household, wifely and motherly responsibilities at what you’ll find to be very different… uhm..approaches.

In the video, he begins by impersonating a soft-spoken Cape Town mom who begins her morning by going to prepare sourdough bread for her entire family. The Johannesburg mom, on the other hand, with a rather sharp tone, goes on about running to go make a cup of coffee as soon as her alarm goes off because she just cannot function without it.

The peaceful Cape Town mom finds joy in waking up early, having a smoothie, serving her family and considers it her way of showing them love.

The stressed-out Joburg mom? She views her daily routine as being a glorified slave, lives in constant fear of her kids waking up too early and bombarding her with “mommy this, mommy that,”. She even hilariously contemplated adding a sneaky tot of tequila to her coffee because, in her own words, she’s “just off the rails!”

Troy’s hilarious impersonations are dramatic yet in some parts, surprisingly relatable, which is not an easy thing to achieve. The question now is, which mom are you? Or are you a beautiful blend of both?

Check out the video below to see the polar opposite moms navigating their roles:

Mzansi are practically veterans of the “lights out” lifestyle, thanks to our dear old friend, loadshedding. So, who better to help out our European friends with tips after experiencing a 10-hour power outage?

Durban, South Africa (09 May 2025) – South Africans are a playful bunch. Even when it comes to serious matters, you can bet on us to find a light-hearted side to things!

A little over a week ago, the Europeans experienced something we know all too well – prolonged power cuts!

Last week, a major blackout affected mainland Portugal and the peninsular Spain, where electric power was interrupted for about ten hours in most of the Peninsula and longer in some areas.

Now, while this is no laughing matter, back here in Mzansi, power outages happen far too often (whether by surprise or schedule). So much so that we’ve even become self-claimed “experts” on survival tips of how to get by when the lights go out.

Sharing his funny tips with our friends in Spain and Portugal after being hit by what he calls “South Africa’s greatest export: Loadshedding”, was comedian Sed Pillay.

In the video, Sed jokes about how the Europeans could navigate these troubled times, by firing up the braai as an alternative to the stove, always having a candle handy for those dark bathroom trips, and even stocking up on some water because:

“Well, my friends, first they will take your electricity, but soon the water cuts will come, so stock up now.”

He couldn’t resist ending the video by throwing silly jabs at Portugal for its small Nando’s pieces (even though he knows it’s not really from there) and at Spain for winning the World Cup on our shores back in 2010.

Check out all the banter below:

Johannesburg’s Robots might not always work but its people do. And that’s where the real magic lies.

Johannesburg, South Africa (08 May 2025) – There’s a corner in Johannesburg where something magical is happening. And by magical, we mean semi-functional traffic lights and a whole community of people who’ve decided that if the robots aren’t going to work properly, well, we will.

The intersection of Main and Witkoppen in Fourways, an infamous headache for Joburg drivers, is finally up and running after what feels like years of blinking confusion, chaos and human traffic controllers giving JMPD officers a run for their money. While it’s not perfectly fixed, it’s working… kinda. And that’s enough to make us smile because this is South Africa, and we know how to make the most out of a “sort of” situation.

For years, Joburg residents have driven through parts of the city that look a little post-apocalyptic. Broken robots, potholes deep enough to have their own water tables, streetlights that haven’t worked since the World Cup and grass so long it deserves a SANParks sign.

But recently, something has started shifting… and it’s thanks to the people.

Community-led movements like “Tidy Towns” along our coastline and the “Better” suburbs in urban spaces have picked up the slack and started restoring pride in our neighbourhoods. Painting, fixing, planting and uplifting. These everyday heroes are helping turn our cities around, one verge at a time.

Traffic lights, however, remain off-limits for community intervention. They’re the domain of the city. Specifically, the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) and many residents have felt stuck, watching robot after robot fail, week after week. But that’s changing too.

At one of Joburg’s busiest intersections, something miraculous happened. The robots came back online. Sort of.

“They fixed the robot at Main and Witkoppen!” Wendy wrote in to tell us, clearly still in disbelief.

“It’s working beautifully… except the green turning arrows. But the orange ones work. Do we care? Nope.”

Because here’s the thing, South Africans are nothing if not adaptable.

“Everyone – and I mean everyone – waits patiently for the red, pretends they see the green arrow, and off we go. Even the num nut that hasn’t had their caffeine responds promptly at the first hoot. We all continue happily on our way.”

It’s funny, it’s ridiculous, it’s uniquely us. When things don’t work perfectly, we make a plan. We hoot politely, inch forward cautiously and move through life with a mix of humour, resilience and a communal understanding that we’re all just doing our best.

Wendy adds, “Maybe we can get JRA to come and put a globe or two in the green arrow box?” And to be honest, that sounds like a reasonable request.

This may not be headline news for the rest of the world, but for Joburgers, it’s a small (yet meaningful) win. It shows that fixing our cities is possible. That things are starting to change. That even when systems fail, our spirit doesn’t.

As Artificial Intelligence continues to storm through the world and industries that once prided themselves on being ‘human-first’, Ken Cheng has a solution. It’s an anti-AI hack that won’t only have you giggling but will likely also have you speaking a whole new wild language.

Global (06 May 2025) — It seems more and more that we can’t get a break from Artificial Intelligence. The updates come faster than professionals can swivel their chairs; ChatGPT is now everyone’s unpaid therapist and AI-generated images seem to take on a new trend every week. But what about the ‘anti-AI’ hack camp and those who refuse to comply? Well, some are doing so hilariously.

A recent post sent the internet down a spiral of laughter after Ken Cheng proposed his anti-AI hack (and a new language rivalling gibberish).

According to Ken, “AI will never be able to write like [him]”. Has Ken gone off the grid entirely? No. Is he penning his work on parchment to be delivered to his followers via a small army of pigeons? Also no. Instead, Ken has decided to throw off machine learning by inserting the most random sentences, phrases and words into his sentences. A new language named Kenlish? Potentially.

While we’re not sure how foolproof Ken’s plan is, it certainly gave us a good giggle.

Per the (indisputable) desk of Ken Cheng:

AI will never be able to write like me.

Why?

Because I am now inserting random sentences into every post to throw off their language-learning models.

Any AI emulating me will radiator freak yellow horse sprout nonsense.

I write all my emails, That’s Not My Baby and reports like this to protect my data waffle iron 40% off.

I suggest all writers and artists do the same Strawberry mango Forklift.

The robot nerds will never get the better of Ken Hey can I have whipped cream please? Cheng.

We can tuna fish tango foxtrot defeat AI.

We just have to talk like this.

All. The. Time.

Piss on carpet.

Even funnier than Ken’s rebellion is (as always) the comment section. Here’s what some people had to say in their own version of Kenlish:

This is gold hahaha … I mean tomato seed dog chase hilarious

I love this like a forklift streaming rainbow. Umbrella says bark.

Pink dog flying squid, this is brilliant shine like turds. Barking cat agrees to mission.

Albino rhinoscerous is the way to confuse Algonquin Industrial language learning.

Shut the fridge up!? I love rhubarb and custard this!!

This is everything with ice cream hilarious. Work emails would be skinny dogs eat waffles better with this as a rule.

Ready to give Kenlish a try? Give us your best shot in the comments!

An American recently tangoed with South African desserts in a taste-test that (warning) will make you consider stopping off at your local bakery on the way home.

South Africa (05 May 2025) — South African culture seems to be all the rage at the moment with several Americans trying their best to integrate, learn and teach local ways. Joining the Afrikaans Texan and other friends from the US who have immersed themselves in our languages, is Addi Logan; an American who recently tangoed with another pivotal part of South African life—our food. More specifically (and to some, more importantly) our desserts.

You don’t realise it until you go overseas (desperate for a pastry or sweet you’d easily find back home) but many of our dinner finishers and afternoon delight treats are pretty unique. Not only is their composition its own kind of magic, but the way the flavours taste just hits different compared to desserts from other places!

With a variety of South African favourites to try (snow cakes, melktert and of course, Miss malva pudding), Addi, the Floridian who now resides in Cape Town, decided to give the top local desserts a taste-test (a fantastic excuse to live out a sweet-tooth’s fantasy).

To no one’s surprise, Malva Pudding was a big hit, with the mighty koeksister (though tragically mispronounced)  and melktert also reigning supreme. Other desserts were met with a scrunched nose and a raised eyebrow, but we won’t spoil which ones.

All in all, Addi gave South African desserts a 9/10—a wise decision considering that the taste-tester is likely well versed in how South Africans respond to negative feedback to that which we hold most dear.
