Against their will, Grace and Thomas Khumalo’s braai area turned into an Airbnb for owls in what has become a hilarious series of events that has seen the same owl family come back to the braai time and time again.

Gauteng, South Africa (29 May 2025) — The first time the Khumalo’s realised they were unknowingly running an Airbnb for Owls, it was a bit of a drama and an event; Thomas and Grace Khumalo thought it would be a one-time thing.

In May last year, it was revealed that the Khumalo’s built-in braai had been chosen by a breeding pair of Barn Owls as the perfect accommodation to raise their fledglings. None-the-wiser, the human couple were caught completely off guard when they discovered the feathered family (it’s not every day three owls choose your braai to nest, after all).

Enter wildlife rescuer and accidental owl concierge Shawn Hefer.

As the South African Wildlife Rehabilitation Center recall, Shawn arrived to help both families and “with the air of someone who’s opened one too many owl filled ovens, Shawn calmly approached the braai door. The moment he opened it, one of the three owls launched itself into the room in a flurry of wings and indignation.”

Shawn caught the owl carefully while a shocked Grace watched the scene unfold.

Eventually, the owls were taken to their new (and far more fitting accommodation) at the Owl Rescue Centre.

However, this was not the last the Khumalo’s would see of their owl guests. Fast forward to this year, and guess who came back for another stay in the braai?

“The same feathered squatters, clearly feeling nostalgic (or just opportunistic), returned for round two after discovering the chimney was still blissfully unmeshed. (Hey.. If it ain’t blocked, why stop the flock)?” The South African Wildlife Rehabilitation Center shared.

This time, a teen owl (a young fledgling) had made himself at home, and Shawn once again got the Khumalo’s call.

This rescue was an easier effort as Shawn set the fledging on the ground and watched him fly off into the sunset.

But, he’d clearly given the braai a five-star review, as just a few weeks later, another female fledging popped by!

“When the third owl-related WhatsApp lit up on Shawn Hefer’s phone, he didn’t even blink. He just burst out laughing. Of course it was Grace and Thomas. Of course it was another Barn owl in their braai. (At this stage, we’re considering a loyalty card)!” The South African Wildlife Rehabilitation Center commented.

Hot on the case again, the owl was carefully moved from her accommodation and into the rehabilitation centre’s clinic to join other fledglings.

The urgency to mesh the area had never been more clear to the Khumalo’s.

As the SA Wildlife Rehabilitation Center share in reference to meshing the chimney,

“Thomas, with a weary smile and the haunted look of a man who’s learned the hard way that owls will be back, promised to sort it out.”

With unprecedented challenges in the current economic climate, the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital faces a crisis in keeping afloat while meeting the demands of vulnerable wildlife needing urgent medical care.

Johannesburg, South Africa (29 May 2025) – A lot is happening in the world, and it saddens our hearts to learn that the suspension of foreign assistance to South Africa has affected those who need all the support to, in turn, help the voiceless and vulnerable.

The Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital (JWVH) is facing a serious financial crisis as a result of these unforeseen changes in the economy.

“We’ve been forced to dip into our emergency reserves just to keep our doors open.

“Meanwhile, the number of wild animals needing urgent medical care continues to grow,” JWVH said in a post.

JWVH has been a lifeline for countless wildlife animals that have found themselves in situations requiring emergency intervention.

Having celebrated eight years of existence and impact in March of this year, JWVH has done incredible work saving and rehabilitating pangolins, raising Aardwolves, healing porcupettes, mending snakes, and educating us about mole rats and all the other magnificent creatures!

The one-of-a-kind non-profit treats indigenous animals for free, and therefore relies heavily on donations to keep doing the good work they do.

Amid the current wave of uncertainty, the veterinary hospital’s dedicated team is doing all they can, but without support, many wildlife and their well-being will be in jeopardy.

“If you can support us through a donation, a sponsorship, or by connecting us with someone who might be able to help, please reach out.

“Every contribution, even simply sharing this post, makes a difference,” the JWVH team appealed.

To help this organisation continue to rescue, rehabilitate and give wild animals a second chance, donate to their PayFast, PayPal or Snapcan channels or using the banking details below:

The Grace Factory is embarking on its most ambitious endeavour yet, and it is all to support vulnerable mothers and their newborns.

Johannesburg, South Africa (28 May 2025) – Mandela Day is around the corner – a day dedicated to extending compassion and goodwill. It is a time that truly pulls on hearts and inspires communities to make a difference wherever possible, all in honour of our beloved hero, uTata.

At the heart of this movement, down at The Grace Factory, where volunteers pour their hearts into supporting moms and babies, this year’s Mandela Day sets up the stage for their biggest packing day yet!

On 19 July 2025, The Grace Factory is aiming to pack an ambitious 1,500 maternity packs in one day across three cities (Johannesburg, Durban and Vanderbijlpark) for vulnerable mothers and their tiny tots!

“This large-scale event aims to bring together individuals, organisations, and communities to celebrate the spirit of giving and service.

“This is one of our most significant efforts to date, and to make it a success, we need broad support from our communities,” says Sarah Cressey.

The Grace Factory team is known for bringing warm waves of kindness to public hospital maternity wards and anywhere else there is a need.

To make this big goal a reality, the organisation is actively collecting and accepting donations of newborn-sized clothing, beanies, socks, and receiving blankets, as well as wet wipes, sanitary pads and financial donations.

“Your donation, of any amount, will go directly toward funding the contents of these maternity packs.

“If many individuals contribute, we can reach our goal and touch 1,500 lives in a single day,” Sarah adds.

Packing day venues will be announced closer to the date. To get involved and show a little compassion to some mamas and their babas, pop an email to info@thegracefactory.co.za or ellouise@thegracefactory.co.za.

Winning a golf tournament in a foreign country is an incredible feat, but imagine doing it alone, without anyone to share your triumph. Well, not on South Africa’s watch! A group of golfers went out of their way to celebrate a foreign champion and show him the BEST time. It’s the heartwarming story of trophies, tequila and new friends!

South Africa (27 May 2025) – Imagine being alone in a foreign country for a sports tournament, winning and having a group of kind locals go out of their way to celebrate your victory and make your stay as comfortable as can be!

This was the experience for a recent visitor who had come down to South Africa for an anticipated Sunshine Tour golf tournament at a local club.

Sharing this feel-good story with us was a member of the club and one of our Good Things Guy readers, who confirmed that a foreigner won the tournament, resoundingly too, but unfortunately didn’t have anyone to celebrate his triumph with.

After the other members noticed the champion sitting alone with his trophy, having a drink, the South African spirit of togetherness came alive in the best way as they asked him to join their table.

What began as a celebratory tequila (inspired by the winner’s Mexican origins) quickly escalated into an unforgettable display of hospitality!

After the round of tequila, they naturally wanted to order some more celebratory drinks, but the winner mentioned that it was getting late and that he still needed to get to the airport to pick up his rental car.

In true ‘Good Things Guy’ style, one of the gentlemen enjoying the celebration with him happened to be a general manager for a car dealership. He insisted that the winner not go pick up the rental car, but instead would provide him with a car to use during his stay.

After a fun evening in the company of new friends, the locals made sure he got back safely to his hotel and his car to use was promptly delivered the next morning, turning a lonely win into a heartwarming experience of camaraderie and genuine South African kindness!

A dad who had been unemployed for some time faced the anxiety of not knowing how he’d find the means to throw a party for his son, especially when he saw how happy his little boy was after going to great lengths to do something special last year. What thoughtful South Africans did to help this dad will melt your heart.

KwaThema, South Africa (26 May 2025) – Everyone needs a helping hand from time to time, and for a loving dad grappling with the challenges of being unemployed, it came in the form of Kaya 959 listeners’ overwhelming support to help make his son’s birthday the best one yet!

During the Kaya Feel Good radio show presented by Andy Maqondwana a few weeks ago, she had reached out to listeners to share what stressed them out the most during their children’s school year.

Among the many entries of parents airing their stresses and frustrations, one voice note stood out from a dad named Innocent.

In the voice note, which was followed by a call from the station, Innocent revealed that he had been unemployed since 2023 and that he found himself particularly stressed around the month of May, as it was his son’s, Ntando’s, birthday month.

This year, he just couldn’t afford to throw his son a birthday party, something Innocent found particularly hard to accept as he realised how happy Ntando had been at last year’s last-minute party that he was able to put together for him.

During the show, a ripple effect of love and generosity took place when the voice note was played on air as listeners started calling in and sending messages of what they could possibly assist with to give Ntando a birthday party to remember.

From snacks and jumping castles to thoughtful gifts, listeners pledged to make Nando’s day, and they delivered!

A few days after the show and after much organising, the Kaya team made their way to the Kwa-Thema Stimulation Centre as the party venue, where a beautiful Spiderman-themed party was set up for Ntando.

In complete awe of everything around him, Ntando was joyfully celebrated by friends, family and radio personalities Thomas Msengana and Skhumba.

In a touching thank-you speech, Innocent poured his heart out to the team and donors who made his dream come true and his little boy feel so loved!

An adored comedian with a heart for others and a talented media strategist driven by purpose are using their platforms to “care out loud” and be champions of humanity by bringing warmth and dignity to women and children in shelters across Gauteng.

Johannesburg, South Africa (15 May 2025) – The golden warmth of South African days is swiftly giving way to a growing chill in the air, as we transition towards the colder season.

As many will be dusting off their coats from the back of the closets or pulling out their cosy blankets to keep toasty in the evenings, South African entertainer Siv Ngesi and communications strategist, Selaelo Mannya, are joining forces to look out for those who would otherwise be left out in the cold this winter.

Fuelled by their passion for social change and involvement in purpose-driven initiatives, Siv and Selaelo have launched a movement called A Giving Circle. At its heart, is to provide warmth and dignity to the less fortunate.

Every ripple starts with a drop, and this movement began with two hearts who chose to care out loud. Selaelo believes giving is a ripple, not a transaction and that stories can mobilise nations. And the outspoken Siv? He is an unshakable champion for period dignity and social justice, and his heart is in every cause he backs.

Together, the pair are using their platforms for good by rallying the public to contribute toward their cause aimed at providing blankets, sanitary pads, and grooming kits to women and children in shelters across Gauteng.

“This isn’t charity. It’s Ubuntu. It’s an honour. It’s all of us, giving what we can, to those who need it most.

“We’re inviting you to join #aGivingCircle, a national ripple effect where one act of giving inspires another,” they said.

To be a part of the movement driven by sheer compassion and humanity, visit their BackaBuddy page here.

South Africa has just been ranked one of the best places in the world for British expats… and that’s not only good for them, it’s great for us too.

Global (15 May 2025) – Yes, our headlines are often filled with chaos. Loadshedding, politics, potholes and people leaving. But every now and then, something happens that reminds us just how special South Africa really is… and that maybe, just maybe, we don’t always see it because we’re living in it.

This is one of those times. And honestly, we are here for it.

South Africa has just been named one of the top three countries for British expats to move to in 2025, and that’s not only a proud moment… it’s a powerful one. It’s a reminder that despite everything, the world still sees the beauty and magic in our country.

The list, released by British relocation experts U.K.ABROAD, highlights what we already know in our bones: this place is pure gold. From the sunshine and scenery to the lower cost of living (for someone coming with Pounds) and our incredible quality of life, South Africa is drawing people in.

The World Sees What We Sometimes Forget

With more than 5.5 million British citizens currently living outside of the UK, South Africa has quietly become one of their favourite spots to start over. And that’s not small news. That’s massive. The list puts us in the same league as places like Australia, New Zealand and Canada. But unlike those countries, South Africa isn’t just another expat destination; it’s got a soul.

According to the study, some of the reasons why include the fact that English is widely spoken, our warm weather and the ability to live here visa-free for up to 90 days are major drawcards. Add to that the sunshine (over 2,500 hours a year!), the affordability and our laid-back lifestyle… and suddenly it makes sense why thousands of Brits are choosing to move here every year.

And with around 200,000 Brits already living in South Africa, this isn’t a new trend, it’s one that’s growing.

Why This is Good News for South Africa

When expats choose to live, work, and even retire here, they’re not just sipping wine in Franschhoek or surfing in Jeffreys Bay. They’re investing. They’re creating jobs. They’re contributing to our local economy. They’re enrolling their kids in our schools, shopping in our stores, hiring local teams and sharing their love for SA with the rest of the world.

And when more people see South Africa as a great place to live? Tourism rises. International confidence increases. Local communities benefit. The more we’re seen for our potential. And the more we grow.

It’s also a much-needed reminder (to us South Africans) that what we have is worth celebrating.

We often look at other countries and think the grass is greener. But people are literally moving here for the exact reasons we sometimes overlook: the lifestyle, the views, the energy, the diversity, the people.

From Penguins to Pinotage… It’s All Right Here

A retiree from Manchester now spends mornings walking along the cliffs of Hermanus, watching whales breach in the bay. A couple from London has opened a guesthouse in Stellenbosch, serving local Pinotage to guests as the sun sets in shades of blush and gold. A young family from Birmingham is raising their children in Durban North, where schooldays include learning Zulu and afternoons are spent barefoot in the garden.

This isn’t a dream. It’s already happening.

From the penguins of Boulders Beach to the cliffs of the Drakensberg and even the electric buzz of Johannesburg, South Africa offers a kind of magic that simply can’t be found anywhere else. And the world is finally starting to notice.

The financial perks are just as attractive. According to William Russell, the cost of living here is roughly 65% lower than in the UK, giving British expats the chance to stretch their pensions further, build a better life, and in doing so, contribute positively to our communities too.

We’re More Than Our Headlines

Yes, South Africa has challenges. We all know it. But we also know how to make the most of every single day. We know how to dance in the rain and braai during loadshedding. We know how to show up for one another and how to find joy in the chaos.

And now the rest of the world is starting to see that too.

“I wake up every morning to blue skies and Table Mountain, it still feels like a dream,” said one British expat now living in Cape Town.

We’re glad you feel that way. We do too.

So, if you needed a sign today that South Africa still holds immense potential, this is it. When people from around the globe choose to pack up their lives and start fresh here, it says a lot about what we have and what we offer.

It’s not just about expats choosing South Africa… it’s about the world choosing us. Again.

And that is a very good thing.

Once subjected to the most awful kind of malnutrition you could possibly imagine, “The 5 Skinnies” were found, saved and are finally receiving love for the first time.

Gauteng, South Africa (09 May 2025) – Found last week in one of the most awful conditions of neglect and malnutrition, five dogs were on the brink of their very end. It isn’t a typical story we’d share on Good Things Guy, but it is one that has transformed into a tale of profound hope.

These dogs were discovered in a home that subjected them to the most heartbreaking conditions and were malnourished to the point of near-organ failure.

When the Dogs Trust got wind of the awful situation, a team immediately removed the dogs and brought them to safety.

The Dogs Trust is dedicated to supporting the welfare of dogs in Gauteng, and has poured love into the lives of the dogs now affectionately known as the “five skinnies”.

“The ‘5 skinny’s’ are now getting five small meals a day to gradually start picking up weight, they get two jerseys on at night, and their kennels are filled with blankets and hot water bottles,” said the Dogs Trust.

The dogs have received additional support from the Hot Cares team who were moved to the core upon learning about their ordeal. A generous donation of R25,000 (R5,000 per dog) was donated to the Trust to help cover the critical veterinary care and nutritional support these survivors need.

“These five souls are the lucky ones. For every animal rescued, countless others still suffer. But together, we can be the difference,” Hot Cares said.

“To The Dog Trust—thank you for being the voice for those who cannot speak.”

Well into their healing journey, we’re relieved that these dogs have been given a new lease on life, one where they are valued, loved, and cared for.

Many little warriors and their caregivers would have gone to bed hungry at a hospital oncology ward last night. However, thanks to a team that scrambled into action and the generosity of donors, a heartwarming solution arrived in the form of a pizza delivery.

Johannesburg, South Africa (06 May 2025) – Last night would have been very cold and uncomfortable, marked with growling little tummies at a paediatric oncology ward at a Johannesburg hospital. However, thanks to the immediate and compassionate action of the Rainbows and Smiles team, many young patients and staff received a meal to see them through.

When the team was informed that there wouldn’t be any meals provided for the children receiving cancer treatment or their caregivers at the hospital last night, they dropped everything to help.

After several calls, sponsors were able to come to their aid with boxes and boxes of pizzas to be delivered at the paediatric oncology ward, bringing much relief to those who would have gone to bed hungry.

“Thanks to the generosity of our donors, and with just a few hours’ notice, Rainbows and Smiles were able to step in and save the day with a comforting meal.”

“We’re grateful to be able to help — and deeply saddened that this kind of support is needed at all,” Rainbows and Smiles said.

Our public healthcare system is not without its controversies, and many public hospitals face various challenges, including a shortage of food supply for patients – a heartbreaking reality, especially for little lives fighting to recover.

“A shared meal might seem simple, but in moments like this, it means so much.”

While much still needs to be done to address this concern, we’re grateful to such charities that go above and beyond to help and bring comfort where there is such great need.

They go through the most and often don’t receive much in return. In a heartwarming gesture of appreciation, Charity Begins With Me will be preparing a special treat for the unsung heroes of many families and communities: township grandmothers.

Johannesburg, South Africa (30 April 2025) – Grandmothers are just the best! You have probably heard this once (or several times) before, but that’s because it’s true. In many South African households, grandmothers not only offer unconditional love but also form the very foundation of their households and even take on parental roles.

They endure significant challenges to ensure their families are supported, even well into their frail old age.

Looking to provide these incredible women with a much-needed break from working overtime to keep their families and communities afloat is do-gooder Stephan of Charity Begins With Me (CBWM).

Through his charity, Stephan has plans underway to bring big smiles and tasty treats for the grandmothers of the communities CBWM serves at its next township tea party, scheduled for 16 and 17 May.

“They work so hard (grandmothers) to keep their families going, and we like to give back to show our appreciation,” shares Stephan.

The special tea party is exclusively for grandmothers, with no children allowed to attend, offering much-needed downtime from the stresses they face daily.

To make this heartwarming occasion even sweeter, Stephan is reaching out to the community for support, seeking donations of baked goods like cupcakes, muffins, and sausage rolls, as well as sponsorships for biscuits and koeksisters.

A box of sweet or savoury goodies can go a long way in brightening up a gogo’s day and making them feel appreciated.

Drop-offs for items can be made at Fairland. For more information, visit CBWM’s latest Facebook post.
