Just two days after his unforgettable suburban stroll, Gordy the elephant seal has resurfaced in Simon’s Town… still big, still blubbery and still ridiculously adorable.

Western Cape, South Africa (29 May 2025) – Just two days after his surprise city stroll had South Africans glued to their screens, Gordy the elephant seal is back… and he’s safe, snoozing peacefully at the Naval Base in Simon’s Town.

Yes, that elephant seal.

The one who turned a sleepy Tuesday morning in Gordon’s Bay into a national moment of joy, curiosity and community connection.

The Cape of Good Hope SPCA has just confirmed the good news via social media: “🚨 GORDY’S BACK – BUT HE’S SAFE! 🐘🌊 Our favourite blubbery visitor has hauled out again—this time at the Naval Base in Simon’s Town.”

They added that Gordy is currently in a secure location, far from roads and traffic, and “there’s no immediate risk to his well-being.”

City officials and SPCA Inspectors are on scene, keeping a close eye on him. But for now, Gordy’s just doing what elephant seals do best… lounging. Resting on land (or “hauling out,” as marine folk call it) is completely normal behaviour for these ocean giants, especially when they’re moulting or recovering from long swims.

The gentle giant made headlines earlier this week when he wandered nearly a kilometre inland through Gordon’s Bay, delighting locals and confusing motorists. Videos of him resting his head on a police car bonnet (and the Cape of Good Hope SPCA bonnet) while traffic stopped to accommodate him went viral. Some folks even questioned if the footage was real. (Spoiler alert: it very much was.)

Social media users were quick to name him. Some called him “Gordon” (for obvious reasons), others preferred “Gordy,” and local news guru Gugu Statu affectionately dubbed him “Chonky”… which, let’s be honest, suits him just as perfectly.

But behind the laughter and viral moments was something far more profound: a full-scale, coordinated rescue effort powered by compassion and teamwork.

From SPCA inspectors and marine biologists to the SAPS, traffic officers, Shark Spotters, and even Two Oceans Aquarium—teams moved quickly to ensure Gordy was safe. He was sedated, gently loaded into a game capture trailer, and returned to Koggel Bay, a quieter beach more suitable for a marine mammal of his size.

“It truly takes a village,” said SPCA’s Belinda Abraham. “We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who stepped up – for their professionalism, their compassion, and their quick response to an animal in distress.”

And now, two days later, our slippery celebrity has reappeared… this time in a spot where he’s away from humans, stress and selfie-seekers.

We absolutely love this story but it isn’t just about a wayward elephant seal. It’s about what happens when a community comes together to show kindness, patience and care for something wild and unexpected. It’s about the kids in pyjamas who came running to see the seal. The neighbours who gave him space. The police officers who gently redirected traffic. The marine experts who worked behind the scenes. And the South Africans across the country who found joy in watching it all unfold.

It’s a reminder that sometimes, all it takes is a 600kg marine mammal with a sense of adventure to bring us together.

Welcome back, Gordy. Rest well big guy… we’ve got your back.

*Just before releasing Gordy on Tuesday, the Cape of Good Hope SPCA team tagged him so that they could monitor (and recognise him) if he visited us again.

It took a village, and then some, to help an elephant seal find his way back to the sea, but what unfolded was nothing short of extraordinary.

Western Cape, South Africa (27 May 2025) – What started as an unbelievable early morning sighting has ended with a heartwarming display of unity, care and kindness. The elephant seal that captured South Africa’s attention by wandering the streets of Gordon’s Bay has officially been returned to the ocean… safe, sound and a little bit famous.

The massive southern elephant seal surprised locals when it made an unexpected appearance almost a kilometre inland from the ocean early on Tuesday morning. As residents blinked in disbelief, the marine visitor cruised down a quiet street, delighting onlookers and stopping traffic, both literally and on social media.

And while the seal appeared calm and unharmed during his curious detour, it was clear the situation posed risks.

That’s when the magic behind the scenes began.

A full-scale, compassionate rescue unfolded with lightning-speed coordination. Law Enforcement, Traffic Services, SAPS, Gordon’s Bay Security and Gordon’s Bay Medical Ambulance Services swiftly arrived to secure the area and redirect traffic, ensuring safety for both the seal and the humans keen to catch a glimpse of him.

From there, a small army of animal welfare heroes stepped in… including the Cape of Good Hope SPCA, City of Cape Town’s Coastal Management and Marine Unit, SANParks, Two Oceans Aquarium, Shark Spotters, and the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE). Together, they formed a dream team of professionals, volunteers, and marine experts, all dedicated to doing what was best for their unexpected guest.

The SPCA carefully monitored the seal’s welfare, calling in a wildlife vet to safely sedate him before the enormous (and delicate) task of loading him into a game capture trailer.

By late afternoon, the vet gave the all-clear and the sleepy seal was transported to Koggel Bay, a coastal spot better suited to his species, where his recovery from sedation was closely observed.

“It truly takes a village,” said SPCA’s Belinda Abraham. “We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who stepped up today – for their professionalism, their compassion, and their quick response to an animal in distress.”

And that’s the real story here. Yes, the sight of an elephant seal lounging on a suburban street is something most of us will never forget… but even more unforgettable was the way so many people came together to help. It was the traffic cops and security teams rerouting cars. It was the neighbours who stood back, respected the animal and offered words of support. It was the marine biologists, vet teams, and rescuers who worked tirelessly for hours to ensure a safe outcome.

This wasn’t just a surreal wildlife encounter. It was a masterclass in kindness. A powerful reminder that when something strange and beautiful enters our lives, even briefly, we have a choice: to look away or to lean in with empathy and care.

For the residents of Gordon’s Bay (and all South Africans who followed the story online), today’s events won’t just be remembered for the size of the seal. They’ll be remembered for the size of the hearts that made sure he got home.

Imagine pouring everything into your business, only to see it wiped out. That was the devastating reality for Noncendo Khawuleza when she lost her farm, forcing her onto childcare grants. But Noncendo wasn’t ready to give up on her entrepreneurial dreams.

Cape Town, South Africa (04 May 2025) – Losing a business you had given so much of your effort and resources to is enough to dishearten any entrepreneur.

This is something Noncendo Khawuleza relates to, all too well. Except, she didn’t let this obstacle dim her desires to grow and succeed.

After losing her pig farming business due to the recurring cycle of African Swine Fever and having to depend on childcare grants to sustain herself and her family, Noncedo was introduced to the SPCA’s Compassion in Farming programme at iThemba Farms and turned her life around for the better!

By being a participant in the programme, funded by the Welttierschutzgesellschaft e.V. (WTG), and in partnership with Abalimi Bezekhaya’s Gardening Centre in Khayelitsha, Noncedo ventured into vegetable farming.

Although she encountered a stumbling block, due to issues with water access, Nocedo soon discovered a neighbouring initiative: the Burundi Gardening Project, a collective of 34 community members committed to growing produce for income.

It was there that the entrepreneurial spirit was reignited. Noncendo cleverly turned a challenge into an opportunity. Instead of only focusing on her own plot, she started supplying the Burundi gardeners with quality seeds each week, establishing a mini-supply chain complete with valuable agricultural.

Her husband also helps by selling their produce to the local community – yet another opportunity and stream of income!

Noncedo has made the most of every opportunity in her path, having secured a contract to maintain a preschool’s vegetable garden as well as expanding her operations at iThemba Farms. What’s even more amazing? She has also been empowering and feeding others along the way the way too!

“Mrs. Khawuleza, we salute you. You are a true everyday hero, and a reminder that compassion grows the strongest roots,” Cape of Good Hope SPCA prasied.

Holly, the little dachshund-staffie, went missing following the Table Mountain wildfires. Capetonians from all over put their efforts into spreading the word and keeping an eye out for her, and after what felt like an eternity of searching, she has been reunited with her family.

Cape Town, South Africa (02 May 2025) — When wildfires strike, there are many consequences beyond excess smoke. While we often think of worst-case scenarios from a human-impact perspective, there’s another side of the coin in which wildlife and domestic animals alike are heavily impacted. Fires on the loose mean a hugely distressing time for animals, which can lead to runaways, injuries, and worse. For the owner of Holly, the little dachshund-staffie, the past few days meant worrying about all of the above. But in fantastic news for her many search parties, Holly has been found at last!

As Animal Welfare Society of South Africa explains:

“After three long days of searching the burnt mountain—through scorching days and cold, dark nights—Holly is finally safe at home.”

The Cape of Good Hope SPCA dubbed the news as something “everybody had been praying for.” This, because Holly’s disappearance on account of the wildfires had been widely circulated on social media; with many locals taking to spread the word and keep an eye out for the chocolate pooch.

“Her owner’s son, Gavin, responded to a sighting at Cape Point Vineyards and was finally able to catch her,” said the Cape of Good Hope SPCA.

Peter Edward Deering, her owner, explained that she had initially gone missing on Silvermine near the MTB parking area on Sunday morning.

Both the Cape of Good Hope SPCA and the Animal Welfare Society offered Holly medical check-ups, with Miss Holly said to have gone for a full assessment at the AWS hospital.

“This work can break us sometimes – but today we celebrate in spite of it. The fire took so much but today it gave us a beautiful reunion! To everyone who kept an eye out, sent in a lead, or whispered a prayer for her safe return — thank you.” the Cape of Good Hope SPCA shared.

You can support future rescue efforts, here!

A pet is often the only consistent source of love and companionship in the life of a person experiencing homelessness. And it’s this unconditional love, which goes both ways, that has inspired the Cape of Good Hope SPCA to support animals whose unfortunate circumstances stand in the way of proper care.

Cape Town, South Africa (16 April 2025) – Imagine having to endure long, cold, hard and uncertain days with not much but the clothes on your back and the comfort of your trusted furry companion to see you through it all.

For many members of Cape Town’s homeless community, the only love they know comes in the form of four paws that curl up with them on cardboard beds.

The unshakeable bond between Riley and Chuckie perfectly captures this emotional reality. Riley, a two-year-old street dog who has never known a soft bed, has always known Chuckie, his human. Life has thrown everything at them: hunger, cold nights, uncertain tomorrows. But through it all, they’ve had each other.

“That love goes both ways,” shares the Cape of Good Hope SPCA.

“A homeless pet owner will spend their last R10 on food, not for themselves, but for their dog. But love alone can’t prevent disease. Love can’t stop a litter of puppies from being born into hardship. And love can’t cover the R900 needed to vaccinate, sterilise and microchip a best friend.”

Empathising with the hardships destitute pet owners face every day, a partnership between the Cape of Good Hope SPCA and AtFrits Dog Hotel & Daycare Centre has given life to the Cape Town Pet Upliftment Project.

The heartwarming initiative aims to bring essential care such as sterilisation, vaccination and microchipping, directly to pets of the homeless, because on the streets, love isn’t the problem; access to care is.

Funds raised through public support will contribute to the project, which includes vaccinations and microchipping at the SPCA Mobile Clinic, while sterilisation will be done at the Cape of Good Hope SPCA.

“Please help us lighten the load on the people who already carry too much—and give their beloved pets the care they need to stay safe, healthy, and by their side,” the SPCA appeals.

To support the project, visit the Cape Town Pet Upliftment Project page.

All Angel did was relieve herself on someone’s lawn…and in an instant she was brutally attacked, turning her whole world upside down.

Cape Town, South Africa (08 April 2025) – The heartbreaking story of Angel is a reminder of the cruelty no animal should ever endure.

This stunning Kelpie Mix breed was the victim of a vicious knife attack at the hands of someone who was infuriated that she had relieved herself on his lawn. Though she survived the assault, the trauma resulted in the heartbreaking loss of her family, who, understandably, feared for her safety if she returned home.

Following surgery and medical treatment, she has since been given a chance to heal and recover from the traumatic experience at the Cape of Good Hope SPCA.

The organisation has stressed the need to hold animal abusers, like Angel’s knife-wielding assailant, accountable for their crimes because no dog, or any other living creature, should have to endure such cruelty for any reason.

Comforted in the trusted and loving arms of the SPCA staff, this brave girl is now looking for her forever home where she will hopefully live a safer life with owners who will continue to earn her trust and make their love felt in her life.

“She has come a long way since her admission when she was shy and timid. She’s more trusting of new people now and enjoys spending time with staff and volunteers. She is athletic, lovable and bright,” the SPCA shared.

To give Angel a chance at a loving home, visit the adoptions page here.

To help with a cruelty investigation, visit Cape of Good Hope SPCA’s website here.

Cape Town’s Nikki Parker is gearing up to run both stretches of the upcoming Two Oceans Marathon for animal welfare!

Cape Town, South Africa (16 March 2025) — Cape Town sports physiotherapist and animal lover Nikki Parker is preparing to take on both stretches of the upcoming Two Oceans Marathon this year, all in the name of animal welfare.

Nikki shares that she has had a “lifelong love and connection with animals”.

“Over the last 14 years I’ve poured that same passion into running, completing numerous Ultra-Marathons, Marathons, and Half-Marathons”, she adds.

However, this year, she’s taking matters to new lengths by running for the Cape of Good Hope SPCA in both the Two Oceans Ultra-Marathon and the Half Marathon—back to back.

This means that if everything goes according to plan, Nikki will run a total of 77kms—56kms for the Ultra and 21kms for the halfie, and we can feel the burn already!

“This rare feat has been accomplished by only a small handful of runners, but I’m not doing it solely for the thrill of the challenge. I’m running to make a difference for those who can’t speak for themselves: the countless animals in need of our care and protection,” Nikki says.

“By supporting my campaign, you’ll be helping the SPCA in their tireless work to prevent animal cruelty, rescue abused animals, and provide them with the love and safety they deserve.

“Every step I take will be for them, and with your help, we can turn this challenge into a lifeline for animals.”

Nikki’s GivenGain campaign has already raised just under R11,000, surpassing its initial R10,000 fundraising goal. She has since upped the ante to R15,000 (you can find it here), which is even more incentive to put her legs of steel to the test.

The Half and Ultra-marathons are taking place on 5 and 6 April, and if you’re planning on running for a reason, share your story with us via stories@goodthingsguy.com.

If you saw a unicyclist grinding through the Cape Town Cycle Tour this past weekend, just know you saw a legend on the move. Gidian Jacobs undertook the full length of the tour lone-wheel! Along with other Team SPCA cyclists, his efforts helped raise over half a million rand for animal welfare.

Cape Town, South Africa (12 March 2025) — There was a unique participant in the Cape Town Cycle Tour last weekend—a teen named Gidian Jacobs who, lone-wheel, trekked the tour in the name of animal welfare. Unicyclist Gidian pushed through 109km the unconventional way, ultimately helping Team SPCA raise over half a million rand for animal welfare!

Gidian’s reason for tackling the tough race was shared by numerous other cyclists making up Team SPCA. All of them understood the assignment—chains belong on bikes, not animals—and all of them played a huge role in raising a sweet tune of R565,959.79.

Some undertook the effort on a tandem bike, like Kendal Krober and Diederick Kruisinga. Others like Amy Hopkins and Bernard Bravenboer rocked costumes. Regardless of how they moved through the race, each shared the same vision—a South Africa free from animal suffering and a South Africa where no animal is chained.

Gidian’s choice of cycling equipment was a big talking point for those taking part in the race as well as those cheering the cyclists on. Many could only imagine how much tougher it might be to unicycle one’s way through the already challenging race.

The unicyclist said that the race was “certainly a challenge”.

“But it’s just a few hours of discomfort in hopes of sparing an animal from a lifetime of suffering,” Gidian added.

Gidian finished the race in six hours and four minutes.

As for the collective effort of the SPCA team, the team was blown away.

“R565,959.79 means real dogs, in real pain, are getting real freedom. Every cyclist, every donor, every cheer from the side-lines—made this a winning event. The entire SPCA family, two-legged and four-legged, is beyond grateful,” beamed Cape of Good Hope SPCA spokesperson Belinda Abraham.

Many hands make light work, and in this case, they also got many happy tails wagging excitedly! Animal welfare heroes came together to sterilise 92 dogs and 79 cats on World Spay Day, offering a brighter future for both pets and their communities.

Cape Town, South Africa (03 March 2025) – In honour of World Spay Day (25 February), six animal welfare charities united under the banner of “We Step In Together” to tackle the pet overpopulation crisis head-on!

As a result, 171 animals -92 dogs and 79 cats- were successfully sterilised, and thousands of unwanted litters were prevented in just one day!

The incredibly impactful initiative was made possible by the joint efforts of Cape of Good Hope SPCA, Paws-a-While, Howlelujah Foundation, TEARS, Afripaw, and Aid4Aid as part of the SPCA’s We Step In campaign, which is dedicated to breaking the cycle of suffering through mass sterilisation.

Loving pet owners brought their cats and dogs to be sterilised, vaccinated, dewormed, and treated for ticks and fleas —not just because it was free but because they care for their furry companions.

These precious dogs and cats went home with full bellies, collars, tags, and most importantly, a healthier future!

Reflecting on the successful sterilisation day, Cape of Good Hope SPCA Spokesperson Belinda Abraham shared:

“This is what happens when we step in together. The impossible is made possible. With the addition of many willing hands and hearts aligned to a common goal, we can achieve so much more.

“The SPCA cannot fight pet overpopulation alone. We need every rescue group to share our vision of a home for every animal. A vision that will only be realised through aggressive sterilisation campaigns.”

As firefighters continue to battle the Table Mountain fire, the SPCA Search and Rescue are on the ground to help the impacted wildlife, and they need Cape Town’s help!

Cape Town, South Africa (26 February 2025) — As firefighters battle the Table Mountain fire bravely, the call is out to support those impacted, including the wildlife.

South African National Parks has communicated that firefighting efforts continued this morning in the Table Mountain National Park following a flair-up induced by winds last night.

Firefighters, helicopters and volunteers have all given their service in an effort to contain the flames in the affected areas, and now it’s time for the public to do their part.

The Cape of Good Hope SPCA has shared that Search and Rescue have been deployed to assist wildlife, but they need Capetonians to help their efforts along.

“The fire that tore through Table Mountain overnight may soon be contained, but for the animals caught in its path, the crisis is far from over. Our Inspectors are on the ground right now, ready to search for and help injured wildlife—and they won’t stop until they are sure that every animal in need of help has received it.”

The Cape of Good Hope SPCA has urged public support in the following ways:

  • Support for those on the ground with energy drinks or energy bars, eyedrops or burn shield dressing.
  • Putting out shallow dishes of water for displaced animals with added stones so small animals can also enjoy a drink.
  • Keeping an eye out for animals that look displaced or hurt
  • Should you find an injured animal and the situation seems safe, the SPCA advises placing it in a ventilated cardboard box with a towel. If the animal is burned, use a sheet.
  • Make sure to keep the animal calm by separating its box from any other people or pets and cover the box.
  • Call the SPCA team immediately at 021 700 4158/9 so they can come to you and assess the animal.
