Just two days after his unforgettable suburban stroll, Gordy the elephant seal has resurfaced in Simon’s Town… still big, still blubbery and still ridiculously adorable.

Western Cape, South Africa (29 May 2025) – Just two days after his surprise city stroll had South Africans glued to their screens, Gordy the elephant seal is back… and he’s safe, snoozing peacefully at the Naval Base in Simon’s Town.

Yes, that elephant seal.

The one who turned a sleepy Tuesday morning in Gordon’s Bay into a national moment of joy, curiosity and community connection.

The Cape of Good Hope SPCA has just confirmed the good news via social media: “🚨 GORDY’S BACK – BUT HE’S SAFE! 🐘🌊 Our favourite blubbery visitor has hauled out again—this time at the Naval Base in Simon’s Town.”

They added that Gordy is currently in a secure location, far from roads and traffic, and “there’s no immediate risk to his well-being.”

City officials and SPCA Inspectors are on scene, keeping a close eye on him. But for now, Gordy’s just doing what elephant seals do best… lounging. Resting on land (or “hauling out,” as marine folk call it) is completely normal behaviour for these ocean giants, especially when they’re moulting or recovering from long swims.

The gentle giant made headlines earlier this week when he wandered nearly a kilometre inland through Gordon’s Bay, delighting locals and confusing motorists. Videos of him resting his head on a police car bonnet (and the Cape of Good Hope SPCA bonnet) while traffic stopped to accommodate him went viral. Some folks even questioned if the footage was real. (Spoiler alert: it very much was.)

Social media users were quick to name him. Some called him “Gordon” (for obvious reasons), others preferred “Gordy,” and local news guru Gugu Statu affectionately dubbed him “Chonky”… which, let’s be honest, suits him just as perfectly.

But behind the laughter and viral moments was something far more profound: a full-scale, coordinated rescue effort powered by compassion and teamwork.

From SPCA inspectors and marine biologists to the SAPS, traffic officers, Shark Spotters, and even Two Oceans Aquarium—teams moved quickly to ensure Gordy was safe. He was sedated, gently loaded into a game capture trailer, and returned to Koggel Bay, a quieter beach more suitable for a marine mammal of his size.

“It truly takes a village,” said SPCA’s Belinda Abraham. “We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who stepped up – for their professionalism, their compassion, and their quick response to an animal in distress.”

And now, two days later, our slippery celebrity has reappeared… this time in a spot where he’s away from humans, stress and selfie-seekers.

We absolutely love this story but it isn’t just about a wayward elephant seal. It’s about what happens when a community comes together to show kindness, patience and care for something wild and unexpected. It’s about the kids in pyjamas who came running to see the seal. The neighbours who gave him space. The police officers who gently redirected traffic. The marine experts who worked behind the scenes. And the South Africans across the country who found joy in watching it all unfold.

It’s a reminder that sometimes, all it takes is a 600kg marine mammal with a sense of adventure to bring us together.

Welcome back, Gordy. Rest well big guy… we’ve got your back.

*Just before releasing Gordy on Tuesday, the Cape of Good Hope SPCA team tagged him so that they could monitor (and recognise him) if he visited us again.

It took a village, and then some, to help an elephant seal find his way back to the sea, but what unfolded was nothing short of extraordinary.

Western Cape, South Africa (27 May 2025) – What started as an unbelievable early morning sighting has ended with a heartwarming display of unity, care and kindness. The elephant seal that captured South Africa’s attention by wandering the streets of Gordon’s Bay has officially been returned to the ocean… safe, sound and a little bit famous.

The massive southern elephant seal surprised locals when it made an unexpected appearance almost a kilometre inland from the ocean early on Tuesday morning. As residents blinked in disbelief, the marine visitor cruised down a quiet street, delighting onlookers and stopping traffic, both literally and on social media.

And while the seal appeared calm and unharmed during his curious detour, it was clear the situation posed risks.

That’s when the magic behind the scenes began.

A full-scale, compassionate rescue unfolded with lightning-speed coordination. Law Enforcement, Traffic Services, SAPS, Gordon’s Bay Security and Gordon’s Bay Medical Ambulance Services swiftly arrived to secure the area and redirect traffic, ensuring safety for both the seal and the humans keen to catch a glimpse of him.

From there, a small army of animal welfare heroes stepped in… including the Cape of Good Hope SPCA, City of Cape Town’s Coastal Management and Marine Unit, SANParks, Two Oceans Aquarium, Shark Spotters, and the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE). Together, they formed a dream team of professionals, volunteers, and marine experts, all dedicated to doing what was best for their unexpected guest.

The SPCA carefully monitored the seal’s welfare, calling in a wildlife vet to safely sedate him before the enormous (and delicate) task of loading him into a game capture trailer.

By late afternoon, the vet gave the all-clear and the sleepy seal was transported to Koggel Bay, a coastal spot better suited to his species, where his recovery from sedation was closely observed.

“It truly takes a village,” said SPCA’s Belinda Abraham. “We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who stepped up today – for their professionalism, their compassion, and their quick response to an animal in distress.”

And that’s the real story here. Yes, the sight of an elephant seal lounging on a suburban street is something most of us will never forget… but even more unforgettable was the way so many people came together to help. It was the traffic cops and security teams rerouting cars. It was the neighbours who stood back, respected the animal and offered words of support. It was the marine biologists, vet teams, and rescuers who worked tirelessly for hours to ensure a safe outcome.

This wasn’t just a surreal wildlife encounter. It was a masterclass in kindness. A powerful reminder that when something strange and beautiful enters our lives, even briefly, we have a choice: to look away or to lean in with empathy and care.

For the residents of Gordon’s Bay (and all South Africans who followed the story online), today’s events won’t just be remembered for the size of the seal. They’ll be remembered for the size of the hearts that made sure he got home.

Artists who love animals and want to see every shelter floof find its forever home, the Tshwane SPCA is looking for you! They’re looking for people willing to transform a wall in Waltloo into a backdrop of hope.

Tshwane, South Africa (06 May 2025) — There are few things quite as heartwarming as seeing a shelter dog and their new family posing for their first picture together. It’s the beginning of a new adventure, the end of months (and, in some cases, years) of waiting, and the beacon of hope that reminds us all how necessary adoptions are. And, since it’s such an important time for both the animal and their new human, it only makes sense that they should have a powerhouse backdrop. That’s why the Tshwane SPCA is searching for artists who love animals to create the ultimate “I’m going home” backdrop.

“This artwork will become the official backdrop for adoption photos—capturing the joyful moment our furry friends find their forever homes,” shares the Tshwane SPCA, adding further that the artist call is for the SPCA Waltloo branch.

Who Can Help?

Whether you’re a muralist who loves turning bare walls into something people (and in this case, pooches) will remember or love any excuse to tango with a painting project, the SPCA encourages you to reach out.

The call also extends to groups (businesses, communities, or volunteers), because everything’s better when we all work together.

You can get in touch with the team at pr@spcapta.org.za, and don’t forget to tag Good Things Guy in the photos once you’ve completed the work!

If you saw a unicyclist grinding through the Cape Town Cycle Tour this past weekend, just know you saw a legend on the move. Gidian Jacobs undertook the full length of the tour lone-wheel! Along with other Team SPCA cyclists, his efforts helped raise over half a million rand for animal welfare.

Cape Town, South Africa (12 March 2025) — There was a unique participant in the Cape Town Cycle Tour last weekend—a teen named Gidian Jacobs who, lone-wheel, trekked the tour in the name of animal welfare. Unicyclist Gidian pushed through 109km the unconventional way, ultimately helping Team SPCA raise over half a million rand for animal welfare!

Gidian’s reason for tackling the tough race was shared by numerous other cyclists making up Team SPCA. All of them understood the assignment—chains belong on bikes, not animals—and all of them played a huge role in raising a sweet tune of R565,959.79.

Some undertook the effort on a tandem bike, like Kendal Krober and Diederick Kruisinga. Others like Amy Hopkins and Bernard Bravenboer rocked costumes. Regardless of how they moved through the race, each shared the same vision—a South Africa free from animal suffering and a South Africa where no animal is chained.

Gidian’s choice of cycling equipment was a big talking point for those taking part in the race as well as those cheering the cyclists on. Many could only imagine how much tougher it might be to unicycle one’s way through the already challenging race.

The unicyclist said that the race was “certainly a challenge”.

“But it’s just a few hours of discomfort in hopes of sparing an animal from a lifetime of suffering,” Gidian added.

Gidian finished the race in six hours and four minutes.

As for the collective effort of the SPCA team, the team was blown away.

“R565,959.79 means real dogs, in real pain, are getting real freedom. Every cyclist, every donor, every cheer from the side-lines—made this a winning event. The entire SPCA family, two-legged and four-legged, is beyond grateful,” beamed Cape of Good Hope SPCA spokesperson Belinda Abraham.

In Gugulethu, a grieving dog named Sergeant has touched hearts with his unwavering loyalty, waiting outside the SAPS station for an owner who will never return – proof that love transcends loss and time.

Western Cape, South Africa (11 January 2025) – In the heart of Gugulethu, a story of love, loyalty, and hope has captured the hearts of many, reminding us of the profound connection between humans and their canine companions.

Known affectionately as “Sergeant,” or “Serg” for short, this grieving dog has become Gugulethu’s very own Hachikō – a symbol of unyielding devotion.

Sergeant’s “tail” began in mid-December when an elderly man arrived at the Gugulethu SAPS station seeking medical assistance, accompanied by his loyal dog. After being taken to the hospital, the man tragically passed away, leaving behind his faithful companion. With no way of understanding the loss, Sergeant chose to wait – day after day – outside the station doors, looking for his beloved owner in every face that exited.

Moved by the dog’s unwavering loyalty, the station’s exhibit commander, Captain Veale, gave him the name “Sergeant,” a title earned through his dedication.

“He reminded us of the values we strive to uphold – duty, commitment, and service,” Captain Veale said.

“Sergeant became one of us in every way that mattered.”

The officers tried their best to care for him. He stood beside them during parades, finding small moments of solace in the camaraderie of his new family. At night, he slept beneath the station’s vehicles, his presence a quiet reminder of love that refuses to fade.

But despite their best efforts, the void left by his owner began to take its toll. His appetite waned, his spark dimmed, and it became clear that Sergeant needed more than the station could offer.

“Asking the SPCA to take him was one of the hardest decisions I’ve had to make,” Captain Veale admitted.

“But I knew it was the right thing for him. He deserved a chance to heal and find a new purpose.”

On January 7, Sergeant’s journey took a bittersweet turn. The Cape of Good Hope SPCA stepped in, with Inspector Jeffrey Mfini collecting him.

“When I saw him, I felt the weight of his sorrow,” Mfini shared.

“This wasn’t just a dog waiting – it was a soul grieving. I want nothing more than to see the spark back in his eyes, that little twinkle of happiness that comes with love reciprocated.”

Under the care of the SPCA, Sergeant is now on the road to healing. Apart from a few ticks, he is healthy and ready to embark on a new chapter of his life.

“Sergeant’s story isn’t just about loss – it’s about how love endures in spite of it,” said Belinda Abraham, spokesperson for the Cape of Good Hope SPCA.

“Dogs give us their whole hearts, asking for little in return but kindness and care. It’s up to us, as a society, to prove ourselves worthy of that devotion.”

The SPCA is committed to honouring Sergeant’s late owner by finding him a home that will cherish and respect his loyalty. As he waits once more, this time it’s not for a loved one who will never return, but for a new family who will love him as deeply as he deserves.

Sergeant’s journey reminds us that even in the face of heartache, hope can find its way back. It’s a story of enduring love, the kindness of strangers, and the promise of brighter days ahead.

If you’d like to be part of Sergeant’s new beginning, contact the Cape of Good Hope SPCA at 0217004152 or email adoptions@spca-ct.co.za. Together, we can ensure that this devoted dog finds a home worthy of his incredible heart.

A touching story of community spirit emerged in Pacaltsdorp when a mare was discovered lying down helplessly with her foal beside her. The Garden Route SPCA, along with local firefighters and rescuers, quickly sprang into action to safely transport the mare and her foal to the SPCA, where they are receiving essential care.

George, South Africa (12 November 2024) – The animal heroes of Garden Route SPCA didn’t hesitate to respond to a call about a distressed mare in Pacaltsdorp who was found lying helplessly on the ground, unable to stand while her young foal stood by her side – a picture of vulnerability.

But hope for this momma mare was not lost. Field officers rushed to the scene and discovered that due to her extended time lying down, she was unable to get up on her own, suffering from uncomfortable numbness.

“With immense teamwork from our staff and veterinary team, the owner, as well as community members, we managed to move the mare into our horse box and safely transported her and her foal to the SPCA for care,” the SPCA said.

With the assistance of the local firefighters from the Garden Route District Fire Department and Rescue Team as well as Gee Swart from EDR Rescue, the team managed to get the mare to a standing position.

After many massages and gentle encouragement, this brave mare finally stood on her own. Now, safe in the care of the SPCA, the mare and her foal are on the road to recovery, receiving much-needed TLC.

However, the road ahead is long and costly. The Garden Route SPCA team could do really with the help and support of the greater public to cover the costs of her food and milk for her foal to provide the nourishment they need.

Every contribution, no matter the size, will make a difference. For more information call 044 878 1990.

Not only did epic artist Chris Wevers change the lives of two dogs by adopting them from the Springs SPCA, but he also left the organisation a special gift to celebrate all the other animals on their journey homeward—a new ‘Going Home’ mural!

Springs, South Africa (06 October 2024) — After adopting two dogs from the Springs SPCA, epic artist Chris Wevers decided to give the SPCA a special gift of their own.

Putting his artistic talents to heartwarming use, Chris sat for hours to doll up their wall—creating something of a colourful light at the end of the tunnel in the form of a gorgeous ‘Going Home’ mural!

Filled with galactic spray-painted colours, a handsome cat and an adorable pup, the wall now stands proudly as the place where animals will be photographed with their new owners. Did we mention that Chris finished the whole project in a day?

While it’s a huge reflection of his talents, it’s also a reflection of his heart.

The Springs SPCA were ‘absolutely blown away’ by the result, which will now mark many hopeful and happy moments for the animals in their care. For them, Chris isn’t just an epic artist but an earth angel.

Meanwhile, in other news of animal heroes stepping up, Cape Town teenager Riley Valentine has made good on his birthday tradition of donating gifts to the Animal Welfare Society of SA, celebrating his 13th birthday and lots of dog food with them!

Animal lovers endured a night of discomfort in kennels, experiencing firsthand the challenges faced by hundreds of homeless furbabies.

Durban, South Africa (20 August 2024) – The 17th of August was International Homeless Animals Day and Durban & Coast SPCA hosted its 3rd Annual Kennels sleepover at the Springfield Park branch. Why? To raise funds and awareness for the plight of homeless animals in Durban.

Durban & Coast SPCA manager Tanya Fleischer told The Good Things Guy that the event saw 14 guests spending the night in kennels and raised over R173,000 for the animals at the SPCA.

“They arrived on Saturday between 3-4pm to set up their kennels, visitors were allowed between 4-6pm and during this time we had them vote for the ‘best dressed’ kennel. They enjoyed watching our sleep over guests play a few fun games and were entertained by music from Underground Radio.”

After visiting hours sleepover attendees had dinner before they had to go into their kennels until Sunday morning.

Durban & Coast SPCA gets over 13,000 homeless animals every year, and sleepover guests got to experience what it was like to be a homeless animal for the night.

“The experienced the lonely sound of the dogs barking and howling, the pesky mosquitos bothering them, the confined space to stay in.”

Guests were also asked to write poems about spending the night in a kennel, just like the animals do. Two of the best by Brigid McCleary and Mandy Kunigan, who touched on the big difference between people who stay in kennels for fun and the animals who live there all the time as well as the loneliness and discomfort of being confined to a small cage-like shelter.

The guests’ selfless participation in the event not only raised vital funds but also fostered empathy and understanding for the creatures who rely on our compassion.

Caring for abandoned and injured animals demands an extraordinary heart, and the staff at Durban & Coast SPCA possess it in abundance.

Durban, South Africa (04 August 2024) – The Good Things Guy connected with this dedicated animal rescue organisation to shed light on their invaluable work caring for creatures in need.

Marketing Manager Tanya Fleischer shared that the ultimate reward of her role in combatting animal cruelty is when an animal who had been neglected was rehabilitated through love, care, and medical treatment and adopted into a new, loving, forever home.

One particularly heart-tugging case that occurred not so long ago involved staff responding to a dog that had fallen and was stuck between concrete walls on the Ottawa Bridge.

“Our inspector had to climb down 4-5m with the busy highway underneath him, but we successfully rescued the dog who luckily did not have any injuries but was dehydrated, hungry and bedraggled.

“Our vet check revealed he had biliary (casually referred to as “tick bite fever). After working with him he was put up for adoption a month later and went to a lovely home before the new year. We still receive updates from his new family and he is doing so well,” shared Tanya.

While the work these animal enthusiasts do is worthy of praise, it comes with its fair share of challenges.

Tanya admits that the hardest part of the job is letting go of those who they could not save in time.

“Those who are suffering so much that the kindest thing we can do for them is end their suffering by humanely euthanising them while speaking gentle words that everything is okay now.”

But it’s not all doom and gloom. The Durban & Coast SPCA impressively rehomes about 480 animals a year.

Make a difference for animals in need.

Want to help animals but don’t know where to start? The Durban & Coast SPCA offers various ways to get involved!

In addition to the monthly book sales and market, the annual Kennels Sleepover for Homeless Animals Day will be held on 17 August at the SPCA, 2 Willowfield Crescent, Springfield Park.

They will also be at the Great Outdoors Expo on 30 and 31 August and will host the Annual Ladies High Tea at Rain Farm on 3 September. The Annual Golf Day is scheduled for 1 November.

“We’ll also be launching our calendar competition in August and need sponsors.”

Tanya urges the public to report any acts of cruelty to their nearest SPCA and to consider adopting a rescue animal from them.

Thanks to the help of Good Samaritans and the dedicated staff of the SPCA’s Wildlife Department, one lucky baboon had a fighting chance and a happy ending after a nasty accident.

Cape Town, South Africa (01 August 2024) – In a heartwarming tale of survival, one fortunate baboon, Kabili, is happy to finally be back home with her troop after a traumatic eye injury.

After images of the injured primate circulated on baboon spotter WhatsApp groups, showing a young female lying injured on a busy road until kind people helped her in Seaforth, Simon’s Town, the SPCA’s Wildlife Department was notified and heeded the call to assist the distressed animal in need.

As the last remaining female offspring of the Seaforth troop’s alpha male, Kabili’s future hung in the balance. The Cape of Good Hope SPCA admitted that the severity of her head and eye injuries, typically fatal in baboons, offered little hope for recovery.

Poor Kabili’s injury was suspected to have been caused by a nasty and miscalculated fall from a leap off a tall building ledge.

Back at the SPCA hospital, Kabili was carefully assessed. The bloody gash above her eye was cleaned, and X-rays were taken to check for broken bones.

After assessing Kabili’s severe injuries, medical staff wasted no time in providing her with some TLC, making sure she got pain treatment and much-needed rest. With lots of love and care, Kabili’s eye slowly healed and recovered, much to the delight of the vets. After ten days, she was strong enough to go back to her family.

Kabili’s release was planned to the T, considering the potential risks involved and mindful to minimise any further injury to herself or those attending to her release.

Everyone was happy to see her back. Her dad, Martello, was especially excited. They reunited in a heartwarming moment that made everyone smile. It was a wonderful story of survival and family love.

Commenting on the remarkable rescue, SPCA Wildlife Supervisor and Kabili care-giver Jon Friedman shared:

“It’s not often that we get to restore something so fragile back into Nature, stronger than it was when it left, so this was a very special moment for all.”
