Just two days after his unforgettable suburban stroll, Gordy the elephant seal has resurfaced in Simon’s Town… still big, still blubbery and still ridiculously adorable.

Western Cape, South Africa (29 May 2025) – Just two days after his surprise city stroll had South Africans glued to their screens, Gordy the elephant seal is back… and he’s safe, snoozing peacefully at the Naval Base in Simon’s Town.

Yes, that elephant seal.

The one who turned a sleepy Tuesday morning in Gordon’s Bay into a national moment of joy, curiosity and community connection.

The Cape of Good Hope SPCA has just confirmed the good news via social media: “🚨 GORDY’S BACK – BUT HE’S SAFE! 🐘🌊 Our favourite blubbery visitor has hauled out again—this time at the Naval Base in Simon’s Town.”

They added that Gordy is currently in a secure location, far from roads and traffic, and “there’s no immediate risk to his well-being.”

City officials and SPCA Inspectors are on scene, keeping a close eye on him. But for now, Gordy’s just doing what elephant seals do best… lounging. Resting on land (or “hauling out,” as marine folk call it) is completely normal behaviour for these ocean giants, especially when they’re moulting or recovering from long swims.

The gentle giant made headlines earlier this week when he wandered nearly a kilometre inland through Gordon’s Bay, delighting locals and confusing motorists. Videos of him resting his head on a police car bonnet (and the Cape of Good Hope SPCA bonnet) while traffic stopped to accommodate him went viral. Some folks even questioned if the footage was real. (Spoiler alert: it very much was.)

Social media users were quick to name him. Some called him “Gordon” (for obvious reasons), others preferred “Gordy,” and local news guru Gugu Statu affectionately dubbed him “Chonky”… which, let’s be honest, suits him just as perfectly.

But behind the laughter and viral moments was something far more profound: a full-scale, coordinated rescue effort powered by compassion and teamwork.

From SPCA inspectors and marine biologists to the SAPS, traffic officers, Shark Spotters, and even Two Oceans Aquarium—teams moved quickly to ensure Gordy was safe. He was sedated, gently loaded into a game capture trailer, and returned to Koggel Bay, a quieter beach more suitable for a marine mammal of his size.

“It truly takes a village,” said SPCA’s Belinda Abraham. “We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who stepped up – for their professionalism, their compassion, and their quick response to an animal in distress.”

And now, two days later, our slippery celebrity has reappeared… this time in a spot where he’s away from humans, stress and selfie-seekers.

We absolutely love this story but it isn’t just about a wayward elephant seal. It’s about what happens when a community comes together to show kindness, patience and care for something wild and unexpected. It’s about the kids in pyjamas who came running to see the seal. The neighbours who gave him space. The police officers who gently redirected traffic. The marine experts who worked behind the scenes. And the South Africans across the country who found joy in watching it all unfold.

It’s a reminder that sometimes, all it takes is a 600kg marine mammal with a sense of adventure to bring us together.

Welcome back, Gordy. Rest well big guy… we’ve got your back.

*Just before releasing Gordy on Tuesday, the Cape of Good Hope SPCA team tagged him so that they could monitor (and recognise him) if he visited us again.

What happens when someone who’s always worked in the background is asked to step into the spotlight? If you’re Darian Smith, you use that light to illuminate the path for others.

South Africa (28 May 2025) – For 25 years, Darian Smith has quietly walked a path few are brave enough to take. A path lined with sacrifice, service and silent victories. He’s never chased awards, applause or accolades. In fact, when he found out he was being honoured with the Humanitarian Award at the Annual Pllum Awards recently, his first instinct was to decline it.

Yes, really.

You see, for Darian, serving others has never been about recognition. His work has always been driven by purpose, not platforms. And yet, standing on that stage, with his son beside him, Darian came to realise something deeply important: sometimes the good needs a microphone too.

“I’ve believed and lived the understanding that our true rewards are not here on earth,” he shared, “but await us in heaven… I genuinely questioned whether I should accept the award at all.”

That reflection, that internal wrestle, became the heart of a message the world needed to hear.

Because for too long, we’ve been told that true humility is invisible. That to do good, we must do it quietly. But as Darian so eloquently pointed out, how can the next generation believe in kindness if they can’t see it?

“Would you rather the newspapers keep feeding the public stories of doom and gloom?” he asked, recalling a painful memory when someone told him he didn’t deserve to be featured two weeks in a row. “Would you prefer that, than seeing stories of hope, upliftment, empowerment, and light?”

That comment stayed with him. And in a world where gangster culture, quick cash and empty fame often steal the spotlight, Darian’s story is a reminder that our children deserve better role models. Real ones. Ones who serve, uplift and quietly change the world without needing the world to notice… but who step forward when the moment calls for it, so that others might be inspired to follow.

“I took my eldest son, Kale, with me that night because I wanted him to see it. To witness first-hand that recognition doesn’t only come with fame, or money, or violence. That integrity, character, and purpose matter.”

This isn’t just a story about an award. It’s a story about what happens when we decide not to shrink. When we honour the builders of our communities, the quiet warriors, the ones who give without asking for anything back. It’s about acknowledging that shining a light on good does not dim its purity. It amplifies its impact.

And that’s exactly what Wendy and Karl Conner have done through the Pllum Awards. By creating a space to recognise the everyday heroes among us… the teachers, the caregivers, the selfless changemakers, they’ve reminded us that honouring humanity is a vital part of expressing it.

Darian didn’t leave with just a trophy. He left with a flame, one that’s been burning for 25 years and now, somehow, burns even brighter.

“I left that evening not with a trophy, but with a flame inside me, burning stronger than ever. A renewed commitment to keep showing up. To keep building. To keep planting seeds of hope in the soil of a broken world.”

Because this moment isn’t just about him, it’s about every person who has ever wondered if doing good is enough.

It’s about reminding ourselves, and especially our children, that real strength lies in compassion. That greatness isn’t measured in what we accumulate but in what we give. That servant leadership, integrity and showing up for others are values worth lifting up and passing down.

Being a good human isn’t outdated. It’s essential.

And Darian Smith’s journey is proof that even the quietest acts of love and service can spark the kind of change our world needs most.

South African breweries have just shown Africa (and the world) that our craft beer scene is stronger than ever, bringing home a bucketload of medals from the 2025 African Beer Cup.

South Africa (28 May 2025) – South African craft brewers have plenty to celebrate after a stellar showing at the 2025 African Beer Cup, the continent’s largest beer competition.

Local breweries clinched dozens of medals across a broad range of categories, from classic lagers and ales to innovative sour beers and even mead, cementing South Africa’s prominent place in Africa’s flourishing craft beer scene.

This year’s competition featured nearly 260 brews from 14 African countries, all vying for top honours. An international panel of expert judges evaluated the entries over several days in Cape Town, ultimately awarding medals to the best beers in each category and crowning one overall champion. By the end of the awards ceremony, South African breweries had earned an impressive haul of gold, silver and bronze medals, including the prestigious “Best Beer in Africa” title for the second year running.

Leading the South African triumphs is Soul Barrel Brewing, a boutique brewery from Franschhoek, which once again clinched the Best Beer in Africa award. Soul Barrel’s Wild African Soul, a collaboration with Apiwe Nxusani-Mawela of Tolokazi Beer, was the gold medal winner in the African Speciality Beer category and also beat out every other beer in the competition to claim the overall top prize.

This unique beer blends a traditional sorghum umqombothi with a farmhouse ale and ages it for two years in wine barrels. The result is a complex, soulful brew that wowed judges.

“Winning Best Beer in Africa three times shows the world just how exciting African beer can be. Winning with a beer based on umqombothi sends a message that South Africa has a fascinating beer culture, and at Soul Barrel we aim to tell its story,” said Nick Smith, founder of Soul Barrel.

Apiwe Nxusani-Mawela added, “On behalf of Tolokazi Beer, I am deeply honoured to receive this recognition for Wild African Soul… This award is a true reflection of our dedication to crafting distinctly African beers — celebrating our heritage and embracing the richness of indigenous knowledge.”

This marks the second year in a row that a South African beer from Soul Barrel has taken the top title, making them the only brewery to have won Best Beer in Africa three times. In addition to the overall trophy, Soul Barrel picked up more medals, including gold for Ale of Origin and silver for Live Culture.

Celebrating South Africa’s Medal Haul

South African breweries of all sizes, from independent microbreweries to major beverage companies, shone across nearly every category of the African Beer Cup. In total, South African brewers brought home dozens of medals, with standout performers like Richmond Hill Brewing Company (RHBC) earning five awards from five entries.

“We are very pleased with our performance as all the beers we entered won an award,” said RHBC brewmaster Niall Cook.

Other familiar names like Afro Caribbean Brewing Company, Jack Black’s, Darling Brew, Woodstock Brewery, and Hazeldean Brewing Co. also claimed multiple medals. Big players Heineken (Sedibeng Brewery) and AB InBev joined the winner’s list too, proving excellence across the board.

The variety of styles South African breweries excelled in is striking – from classic Czech lagers and British bitters to hazy IPAs, wild ales, spiced beers and beyond.

Here’s a snapshot of the top South African wins:

South Africa Dominates 2025 African Beer Cup with Record Wins

(Dozens more silvers and bronzes were also awarded across styles and regions.)

From Cape Town to Gqeberha, Joburg to the Winelands, the awards spanned every corner of South Africa, highlighting the strength of our national brewing scene. Whether it was experimental fermentation or classic brewing mastery, South African brewers showed their skill, creativity and dedication.

A Brief History of the African Beer Cup

The African Beer Cup launched in 2019, founded by Lucy Corne and Shawn Duthie to recognise and celebrate excellence in African brewing. Africa had been the only continent without a continental beer competition… until this one came along.

What began with 150 beers from 11 countries has grown each year. In 2025, nearly 260 beers from 14 countries entered the competition. New categories have been added to embrace African traditions, including beers brewed with indigenous grains and mead.

Held annually in Cape Town alongside BeerEx Africa, the cup has become the continent’s most prestigious beer competition, fostering collaboration and raising the standard of brewing across Africa.

All beers are judged blind by certified professionals. Each entry is evaluated by two panels independently and judged against strict international style guidelines. Medals are only awarded if a beer meets the threshold… meaning no guaranteed golds or silvers unless the beer earns it. Every gold-medal winner moves to a “Best of Show” round, where the Best Beer in Africa is crowned.

Each year, the overall winner is awarded a specially commissioned artwork, a unique way to honour the artistry of craft beer.

This year’s success proves that South Africa is not just participating in the craft beer movement, we’re leading it. Our brewers are creating world-class beers rooted in local heritage, pushing boundaries and proving that African flavour belongs on the global stage.

What do a green silk gown and a moody 1997 portrait have in common? They both just made history, putting South African art where it belongs… right at the top.

Johannesburg, South Africa (28 May 2025) – It’s been a record-breaking season for South African art… and not just once, but twice.

Last night, a portrait painted in 1955 became the centre of attention (and applause) at a packed Strauss & Co auction in Johannesburg, where Vladimir Tretchikoff’s Lady from the Orient sold for a staggering R31.9 million. The sale set a new world record for the Russia-born South African painter ans also sparked pure celebration within the local art community.

With 89 rapid-fire bids, the drama unfolded between an anonymous telephone bidder and an in-room contender, the kind of back-and-forth you’d expect in a blockbuster film.

Auctioneer Alastair Meredith could feel the energy climbing as he called out, “We’ve breached the $1 million mark,” later adding, “The next bid is R25.2 million, which is something I have never said.” And just a few bids later, the hammer came down – history made.

Lady from the Orient, featuring Valerie Howe – a Cape Town grocer’s daughter swathed in a green silk gown – is a standout example of Tretchikoff’s signature Technicolor style. It’s bold, it’s glamorous, and it’s pure 1950s drama. The piece is part of a powerful legacy of works created after Tretchikoff moved to South Africa in 1946 and it clearly still captivates today.

But wait… there’s more.

In what can only be described as an incredible double win for South African talent, another artist from our shores recently also made history, this time on the international stage. Marlene Dumas, the iconic painter who studied Fine Arts in Cape Town, smashed the record for the highest auction sale for a living female artist this week in New York. Her 1997 painting Miss January sold for an astounding $13.6 million (that’s nearly R250 million!) toppling the previous record held by British artist Jenny Saville. What makes this moment even more special is the decades-long journey Dumas has walked. From showcasing her work in the ‘70s with little attention to becoming one of the most celebrated artists in the world, Marlene has built a career rooted in both technical mastery and emotional power.

Together, these two moments are reminders that South African art is not just alive and well… it’s thriving. It’s reaching global stages. It’s shifting the conversation. And that’s something truly worth celebrating.

What a moment for South African creativity. What a win for the world.

He helped make peri-peri global but now Robbie Brozin is turning his fire toward something even bigger… the soul of a city.

Johannesburg, South Africa (28 May 2025) – There’s something incredible that happens when you sit down with someone who not only dreams of a better South Africa… but rolls up their sleeves and actually gets stuck in to make it happen.

On this week’s episode of Good Things with Brent Lindeque, I had the absolute privilege of chatting to Robbie Brozin (yes, that Robbie Brozin), the co-founder of Nando’s, the man behind Goodbye Malaria, and the driving force behind the growing movement that is Jozi My Jozi.

You might know him because of peri-peri chicken and those cheeky Nando’s ads but his purpose has always been deeper than spice. These days, his mission is clearer than ever: he wants to fix Johannesburg. Not for clout, not for likes, not for a quick win… but because he genuinely loves this city. And it’s that kind of passion that’s hard not to be inspired by.

“Joburg’s got soul,” he tells me. “We just have to clean it up a bit and show people how amazing it already is.”

Robbie’s story is a proudly South African one, from building an international food brand rooted in local flavour, to fighting malaria across Africa, and now investing his time, energy and heart into revitalising Jozi.

He’s not shouting from the sidelines; he’s hands-on, funding artists, cleaning up spaces, building bridges between business and community and lighting a fire under what could be possible if more people joined in.

What struck me most in our chat is how much he believes in us. In South Africans. In our creativity, our resilience, our humour and our ability to overcome.

“The answers aren’t somewhere else,” Robbie says. “They’re right here. In us. We just need to believe it.”

And that’s what this episode is about. It’s about possibility. About taking ownership. About finding your lane and doing something, anything, to make where you live better.

Robbie Brozin is one of those rare humans who makes you want to do more. Be more. He reminds us that it’s not about waiting for someone else to fix things. It’s about starting. It’s about showing up. It’s about finding the good and growing it.

And that, my friends, is a good thing. A really good thing.

It took a village, and then some, to help an elephant seal find his way back to the sea, but what unfolded was nothing short of extraordinary.

Western Cape, South Africa (27 May 2025) – What started as an unbelievable early morning sighting has ended with a heartwarming display of unity, care and kindness. The elephant seal that captured South Africa’s attention by wandering the streets of Gordon’s Bay has officially been returned to the ocean… safe, sound and a little bit famous.

The massive southern elephant seal surprised locals when it made an unexpected appearance almost a kilometre inland from the ocean early on Tuesday morning. As residents blinked in disbelief, the marine visitor cruised down a quiet street, delighting onlookers and stopping traffic, both literally and on social media.

And while the seal appeared calm and unharmed during his curious detour, it was clear the situation posed risks.

That’s when the magic behind the scenes began.

A full-scale, compassionate rescue unfolded with lightning-speed coordination. Law Enforcement, Traffic Services, SAPS, Gordon’s Bay Security and Gordon’s Bay Medical Ambulance Services swiftly arrived to secure the area and redirect traffic, ensuring safety for both the seal and the humans keen to catch a glimpse of him.

From there, a small army of animal welfare heroes stepped in… including the Cape of Good Hope SPCA, City of Cape Town’s Coastal Management and Marine Unit, SANParks, Two Oceans Aquarium, Shark Spotters, and the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE). Together, they formed a dream team of professionals, volunteers, and marine experts, all dedicated to doing what was best for their unexpected guest.

The SPCA carefully monitored the seal’s welfare, calling in a wildlife vet to safely sedate him before the enormous (and delicate) task of loading him into a game capture trailer.

By late afternoon, the vet gave the all-clear and the sleepy seal was transported to Koggel Bay, a coastal spot better suited to his species, where his recovery from sedation was closely observed.

“It truly takes a village,” said SPCA’s Belinda Abraham. “We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who stepped up today – for their professionalism, their compassion, and their quick response to an animal in distress.”

And that’s the real story here. Yes, the sight of an elephant seal lounging on a suburban street is something most of us will never forget… but even more unforgettable was the way so many people came together to help. It was the traffic cops and security teams rerouting cars. It was the neighbours who stood back, respected the animal and offered words of support. It was the marine biologists, vet teams, and rescuers who worked tirelessly for hours to ensure a safe outcome.

This wasn’t just a surreal wildlife encounter. It was a masterclass in kindness. A powerful reminder that when something strange and beautiful enters our lives, even briefly, we have a choice: to look away or to lean in with empathy and care.

For the residents of Gordon’s Bay (and all South Africans who followed the story online), today’s events won’t just be remembered for the size of the seal. They’ll be remembered for the size of the hearts that made sure he got home.

Locals in Gordon’s Bay were left wide-eyed and smiling as an unexpected guest waddled down their suburban street… a massive elephant seal on a surprise inland holiday.

Western Cape, South Africa (27 May 2025) – It’s not every day a sleepy seaside town wakes up to an elephant seal in the streets! Gordon’s Bay locals were overjoyed and united by a rare encounter early Tuesday morning when a massive southern elephant seal decided to wander through their neighbourhood, sparking awe, laughter and a flurry of online buzz.

Residents of this coastal town near Cape Town rubbed their eyes in disbelief at dawn when they spotted an elephant seal cruising down a residential road, almost a kilometre inland from the ocean. The gigantic marine mammal appeared around 6am and stunned locals quickly began filming the unusual encounter.

It was a bizarre and thrilling sight… after all, elephant seals are not indigenous to South African waters and are mostly found much further south, near Antarctica.

Traffic came to a standstill as the elephant seal took its neighbourhood tour and authorities even closed off Sir Lowry’s Pass Road to keep both residents and the animal safe. The gentle giant didn’t seem to mind the attention, at one point, the curious seal ambled up to a law enforcement vehicle with blue lights flashing and decided to plop its head on the car’s bonnet, as if making friends with local officials. The surreal sight had onlookers grinning and shaking their heads in amazement; it looked like a scene straight out of a movie. In fact, the scene was so incredible that some on social media initially suspected it had to be AI-generated. Of course, wildlife experts and local volunteers quickly assured everyone that this gigantic visitor was absolutely real, and very much enjoying its impromptu Cape Town adventure.

The Cape of Good Hope SPCA dispatched inspectors as soon as reports came in about the unexpected visitor. By 8am, animal welfare officers were on-site, gently securing the area and formulating a plan to guide the seal back to safety. The SPCA even took to Facebook to update concerned followers, urging people to keep their distance and let the rescuers do their work.

“We’re working on a safe and stress-free plan to relocate this magnificent marine mammal. Please avoid the area to help us give the seal the space and calm it needs while we carry out the rescue,” the organisation advised in a statement.

Ensuring the animal stayed comfortable was top priority, the team wanted to avoid stressing the big seal while figuring out how to escort their hefty guest back to the ocean. As of Tuesday mid-morning, efforts to relocate the elephant seal were still underway, with officials committed to a happy ending for the marine drifter. They plan to transport or “shepherd” the seal to a suitable beach once it has rested enough, ensuring it can return to its natural habitat without harm.

Meanwhile, the community’s excitement is only growing! News of the roaming seal is spreading like wildfire through Gordon’s Bay, and a crowd of amazed residents (many still in pyjamas and slippers!) have gathered (at a respectful distance) to steal a glance at the extraordinary creature.

“We often see seals here, but not like this… it’s not an everyday occurrence. This was unusual. The seal was huge!” one astonished resident exclaimed, describing the scene that unfolded on her street.

Neighbours chatted with one another in delight and concern, marvelling at how this phenomenal encounter had brought everyone together before breakfast. Despite the early hour, the vibe was electric – parents lifted children onto their shoulders to see the gentle giant, friends called each other excitedly to say “Come quick, there’s an elephant seal outside!”, and many folks captured videos to share with those who couldn’t be there.

Online, South Africans far and wide are sharing in the joy. Social media timelines have lit up with heart emojis, seal puns and incredulous comments about the “seal on the loose”.

The consensus: this unexpected visitor was the dose of wonder and positivity everyone needed. Many praised the SPCA and local authorities for handling the situation with care and compassion, while others joked that the seal was simply on a sightseeing tour of Gordon’s Bay or looking for a comfy spot to sunbathe. The fact that some viewers initially doubted the footage was proof of just how surreal and magical the encounter appeared, a reminder that sometimes reality outshines even our wildest imagination.

Wildlife experts note that while elephant seal sightings in the Cape are rare, they’re not unheard of. In recent years, a few adventurous elephant seals have made similar pit stops along South Africa’s coast – famously, a massive seal nicknamed “Buffel” has periodically hauled out on Cape Town beaches for his moulting season, quickly becoming a local celebrity. These occurrences, though infrequent, are cherished by communities as a chance to see a remarkable animal up close and to learn about the rich marine life that occasionally graces our shores.

For Gordon’s Bay, this week’s seal visit will surely go down in town history as a bright, uplifting story told for years to come.

*Update: The elephant seal has been safely returned to the ocean after his Cape Town suburb stroll.

Darren Scott and his iconic voice echoed through radios for over 40 years… now, South Africans are echoing their love back as they honour a man who brought light, laughter and warmth to countless lives.

South Africa (27 May 2025) – South Africa is celebrating the life of Darren Scott, a veteran radio presenter whose iconic voice and warm spirit touched millions. Scott sadly passed away on 27 May 2025 after a courageous battle with stage four melanoma. In his 61 years, he became more than just a radio host, he was a household name and a symbol of unity and positivity for many.

Today, even in mourning, the nation remembers him with overwhelming love, fond memories, and gratitude for his immeasurable contributions.

A Four-Decade Legacy on Air

Darren Scott’s broadcasting career spanned over 40 years, during which he became a familiar voice in homes and cars across South Africa. He launched his career in the early 1980s and went on to work at some of the country’s biggest radio stations, from Capital Radio 604 and Radio Bop to 5FM, East Coast Radio, and most recently HOT 102.7FM. He even hosted the popular “Just Plain Breakfast” show on Jacaranda FM in the early 2000s, making morning commutes more enjoyable for countless listeners.

Over the decades, Darren informed, entertained, and connected with audiences through music, talk, sport, and laughter. In 2024, he marked an astonishing 40 years in radio and was rightfully inducted into the Radio Awards Hall of Fame, cementing his status as a South African broadcast legend.

Colleagues and listeners alike describe Darren as a true broadcast icon and a pioneer who helped shape the local radio landscape. He had an encyclopaedic knowledge of sports and a quick wit that made every show engaging. If you ever found yourself laughing in traffic at his on-air antics or learning a new sports fact during a big game weekend, you weren’t alone, Darren had a knack for bringing joy and insight to everyone tuning in.

Beyond the microphone, he also mentored younger presenters and was known for his generosity and kindness off-air. “He is so used to being the one who is helping others,” noted his ex-wife, Sarah-Kate Accetta, highlighting Darren’s natural tendency to uplift those around him. This caring nature made him not just a radio star, but a beloved figure in his community.

A Nation Rallies: No Legend Fights Alone

When Darren was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer recurrence, South Africans responded with an outpouring of support that speaks to the deep affection the nation had for him.

In early 2025, as Darren faced mounting medical bills for life-saving treatments, his friends, family, and fans stepped up in a big way. Sarah-Kate Accetta, his ex-wife and close friend, launched a BackaBuddy crowdfunding campaign to help cover his medical expenses.

Donations flooded in almost immediately, over R130,000 was raised in just the first 48 hours. Within a few days the fund grew to more than R500,000 thanks to the public’s overwhelming support and it continued climbing towards its goal of R960,000.

This incredible generosity left Darren and his family profoundly moved and grateful.

“I cannot put into words how humbling and heartwarming it has been since I made Darren’s Back-a-Buddy post. From the bottom of my heart, thank you!”

Sarah-Kate wrote in an update, thanking every person who shared, donated or even left a kind comment. “You are the Ubuntu that the USA will never know!” she added, praising the uniquely South African spirit of community that rallied behind Darren.

Support for Darren went beyond monetary donations. The radio and music industry united to honour their friend and colleague in his time of need. Fellow presenters from various stations planned special events, and an all-star benefit concert aptly titled “Benefit for Darren – No Legend Fights Alone” was organised to raise funds and lift Darren’s spirits.

On 14 May 2025, iconic South African artists including Ard Matthews, Jesse Clegg, Louise Carver, Kurt Darren, and band Just Jinjer took to the stage alongside comedians like Dave Levinsohn and Mark Banks – all performing in tribute to Darren.

It was an unforgettable night of music, memories and hope, exemplifying the message that when one of South Africa’s most iconic voices needed help, the nation didn’t hesitate to answer the call. Darren’s long-time listeners turned up, his peers volunteered their talents, and even his current radio home, HOT 102.7FM, pledged ongoing support, covering costly treatments and ensuring he stayed on full salary while he focused on his health.

This communal embrace showed Darren that he was not fighting alone; an entire country was in his corner, echoing back the love he had broadcast for years.

Remembering the Warmth of Darren’s Spirit

Throughout his battle, Darren remained humble and deeply appreciative of the love surrounding him. He publicly thanked South Africans for their support as he fought bravely, and despite health setbacks he even returned to the airwaves whenever he could, determined to continue doing what he loved – connecting with listeners.

Those close to him shared how much the encouragement meant to Darren. The flood of messages and prayers not only buoyed his spirits, but also brought comfort to his family. According to Sarah-Kate, even their sons found solace in seeing how cherished their father was by so many people during his fight. In her words, Darren was “humbled” by the nationwide show of kindness, and he drew strength from every gesture of support.

In the wake of his passing, Sarah-Kate expressed deep gratitude for the compassion and generosity that surrounded Darren in his final chapter. She has kindly asked that everyone keep Darren’s children, Mark and Matthew, in their thoughts and prayers in the days ahead. The two boys, whom Darren adored, now carry forward their father’s legacy of resilience and positivity. They, along with all of South Africa, have been uplifted by the incredible example of unity and love that Darren’s journey inspired.

Though Darren Scott has signed off for the last time, his legacy continues to shine brightly. Tributes are pouring from listeners, colleagues and friends, celebrating his life and the joy he brought to the airwaves. Many recall his infectious laugh, his passion for music and sports, and the genuine warmth that made everyone feel like part of one big radio family.

Thank you, Darren, for the good times and good things, you will be dearly missed, but never forgotten. South Africa is better for having shared the journey with you.

Diagnosed with stage five kidney failure at 15, DK found new life through his mother’s kidney… and he’s now inspiring others to become organ donors too.

Pretoria, South Africa (27 May 2025) – When Ditshegofatso Kgobisa was just 15, his world changed overnight. The vibrant teenager, known as DK, was suddenly too unwell to keep down even a meal. What followed was a whirlwind of emergency hospital visits, a devastating diagnosis, and a journey that tested, and ultimately celebrated, the strength of a loving family and the incredible dedication of healthcare heroes.

Now, just a few years later, DK is thriving, back at school, back to dreaming big and back to being a teenager with a whole future ahead of him.

And it’s all thanks to one extraordinary act of love from his mother, Rosemary.

It was the 8th of December 2021 when DK’s mother got the call that would change everything. Their trusted family doctor, Dr Lilian Sanyane, urged the family to get DK to the emergency department immediately.

Within hours, DK was admitted to Netcare Montana Hospital and diagnosed with stage five kidney failure. Already managing epilepsy, the teenager now had to face a new and terrifying condition. The kidney failure brought on dangerously high blood pressure, eventually leading to a haemorrhagic stroke that required emergency surgery.

“For a parent, there are no words. We didn’t know anything about dialysis at that stage, and we were scared,” Rosemary recalls. But amid the panic, a team of healthcare professionals stepped in – not only with medical expertise but with a plan, and with hope.

That’s what dialysis looked like for DK, and it became part of his routine for nearly a year. The National Renal Care (NRC) Montana’s acute dialysis team stepped in quickly, and DK began sessions at the hospital just days after his diagnosis.

“A supportive family is everything,” said Mary Mosetlha, who was the unit manager of NRC Montana at the time. “DK’s parents, his brother, aunts, cousins – they didn’t just drop him off. They stayed, they supported, they cared. We all became a family.”

Dialysis isn’t just a treatment; it’s a lifestyle. And for young patients like DK, the emotional and psychological toll can be just as intense as the physical one. But through it all, the Kgobisa family showed up. Again and again.

Very early in DK’s treatment, the family began talking about transplantation. Rosemary, her husband, and their eldest son all stepped forward to be tested as potential kidney donors. When Rosemary was identified as the best match, there was no hesitation.

With the support of their transplant coordinator, Sister Nthabiseng Sono, the family prepared for surgery at Netcare Jakaranda Hospital in November 2022.

“The kidney started working immediately,” Rosemary says. “Within days, DK had his energy back. He was literally running around the hospital! I told him, it feels like I gave birth to you twice. But I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

The bond between DK and his mother is now visible in more than just shared DNA.

“I appreciate my scar a lot,” Rosemary says. “It reminds me of the gift I gave, and the love I have for my son.”

Today, DK is 18 and back at school. He’s passionate about music, acting and dreams of becoming a music producer.

“I want to thank my family for all the love and support, and especially my mom, who gave me the kidney that saved my life,” he says.

He also offered heartfelt thanks to the entire healthcare team.

“Thank you to every nurse and doctor who helped me. You were my lifeline.”

The Kgobisa family’s story is not just about survival, it’s about showing what’s possible when love, faith, and medical care come together.

“We want to share our experience to show that good outcomes are possible,” Rosemary says.

Their story is a reminder of the power of organ donation, a gift that not only saves lives but restores families, futures and hope.

If there’s one thing Rosemary would like to leave us with, it’s this: “Please consider becoming an organ donor. It’s the greatest gift you can give. A second chance. A second life.”

One stolen phone. One determined team. And one grateful visitor who wants the world to know just how good our Metro Police can be.

South Africa (26 May 2025) – What should have been a night of fun at Cape Town Stadium turned into a stressful experience for Thomas Ambühl when his phone was stolen by a pickpocket in the crowd. The feeling of helplessness that follows such an incident is all too familiar. You try your best to report it but deep down, you prepare yourself for disappointment.

We often hear stories that shine a harsh light on crime, chaos or lack of service. Especially when it comes to government officials or law enforcement. But sometimes, a story comes along that reminds us there are incredible people doing their absolute best to help others. This is one of those stories.

On Friday, the 16th of May, Thomas Ambühl was enjoying an evening at the Cape Town Stadium when things took a disappointing turn… his mobile phone was pickpocketed during the event. It’s a frustrating, violating experience that many South Africans can unfortunately relate to. And like most people in that moment, Thomas did what he could, reporting the incident to the stadium’s security team and even flagging down a Metro Police officer nearby. But by then, the chances of finding his stolen phone felt slim.

“I had basically given up hope,” Thomas admitted. “Even after checking with lost and found, I thought it was gone for good.”

But just as he was making peace with the loss while heading back to his car, his son’s phone rang. Twice. First his mother. Then his sister. Both had been contacted and urged Thomas to immediately call his own number.

When he did, someone answered.

But not just someone… it was Officer Appelgate.

She calmly informed him that a suspect had been apprehended with several stolen phones in their possession… and one of them was his.

Without hesitation, Thomas made his way to the Sea Point Police Station, where he was warmly met by a group of Metro Police officers. Within an hour, he had laid a charge of theft, had his phone safely back in hand, and was left completely awestruck by the professionalism, care, and effort from the team.

Thomas made a point of writing a heartfelt thank you note to commend Officer Appelgate, Officer S. Ntuli, Officer J. Strydom, Officer Pieterse, Delft Bravo Shift and Regional Inspector Renge.

“Their swift response and dedication truly exceeded my expectations,” he wrote. “It is reassuring to know that such committed officers are serving our community.”

At Good Things Guy, we know how easy it is to focus on what’s wrong but there’s just as much good happening out there too. And stories like Thomas’s remind us that when people show up with purpose and integrity, the impact ripples far beyond a single stolen phone.

To Officer Appelgate and the whole team who went out of their way to help, we see you. And we’re so incredibly grateful for you.
