Ten teens are coming together, using sport to powerfully rewrite the narrative that is often told about the youth of Lamontville. With fire and determination, they’re ready to make waves at the highly anticipated Oceans 8 Charity Swim.

Durban, South Africa (29 May 2025) – Sport is paving the way for a promising future for 10 passionate young swimmers in the heart of Durban’s Lamontville township as they prepare to realise their shared dream of competing in the Oceans 8 Charity Swim in June.

The six boys and four girls from LSA have been training, hoping for the opportunity to compete in this open-water swim that will not only test their sporting limits but also enhance their mental and physical well-being.

Thanks to funding from the Balwin Foundation, the 10 competitors from Lamontville Swimming Academy (LSA) will get to dive into a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to compete in the high-profile, open water swim taking place at Vetch’s Beach, Durban Undersea Club.

The swimming event presents a unique opportunity for each child, with the competition building confidence in young swimmers, as well as exposing them to further sponsorship and upliftment opportunities.

From Township Pool to Ocean Challenge

Life in Lamontville is characterised by various challenges such as crime, drug abuse, and unemployment. However, LSA offers a beacon of hope for the township community by teaching swimming skills and nurturing young talent.

An anonymous donation in 2024 enabled four LSA swimmers to participate in the Oceans 8 Charity Swim for the first time as part of the Youth Development Swimmers Programme. The story of these swimmers captured the hearts of many and led to generous gear donations from Arena South Africa, as well as greater visibility for the Academy’s mission.

“As a coach, it’s been inspiring to work with such a dedicated group in our swimming club. These young swimmers are showing real character, training hard, and aiming high. Some have already competed and done incredibly well. We all share the same vision, to grow in the sport, compete on big stages, and represent our community with pride,” commented Coach Lungisani Zulu.

“We’ve already produced many lifeguards serving across Durban’s beaches, but my dream is to one day see the first swimmer from our community stand on the Olympic podium. With support from Oceans 8, Arena, Balwin Foundation NPC and our local leaders, we’re building something powerful.”

With the 2025 event fast approaching, Oceans 8 Charity Swim event spokesperson, Nicci Carvalho, said she was excited to host swimmers from the LSA again this year and is incredibly grateful for the support toward their Youth Development Swimmers Programme.

“Together, we’re opening up opportunities and creating real change – in and out of the water.”

Years after the tragic passing of KwaZulu-Natal farmer Bob Gawler in a brutal 2017 attack, his generous spirit lives on through the tireless efforts of an off-road biking community that has gone to great lengths to preserve his legacy and the land he shared with them.

Ballito, South Africa (29 May 2025) – You know a man must have led a truly impactful life when, years after his passing, a community tirelessly rallies to preserve his home and transform it into a lasting legacy that will impact many generations to come.

The life of a slain farmer and family man, Bob Gawler, has been beautifully honoured by the community to which he so warmly opened his home.

The tragic passing of the KwaZulu-Natal farmer made headlines back in 2017 after he and his wife were brutally attacked in their De Mist sugar farm home in Ballito. Gawler’s passing not only shook those closest to him but left a void in the off-road biking community that he welcomed to his property for years.

According to the North Coast Courier, in a heartwarming tribute, the Glendale Off-Road Club was officially launched on Saturday at Gawler’s home, now known as “Bob’s”, formalising years of informal riding on local trails and ensuring his impactful legacy continues to benefit many more bikers.

Since the beloved farmer’s death, club members have continuously rallied to preserve his legacy and protect the land which he had shared with them.

When the property was listed for sale, riders united to support its preservation, despite the challenging circumstances and high costs involved. Together with support from business partners, they dug deep to contribute donations to secure and transform the premier off-road location, which remained so dear to them.

“Bob’s” will now officially continue to welcome endurance chasers from all over to enjoy the prime off-road biking location, in memory of a good man who not only embraced them but so graciously shared what he had with them.

Today is World Menstrual Hygiene Day, and to honour the movement, media personality and devoted father of three girls, TT Mbha, is visiting Johannesburg schools in bright pink overalls, leveraging his platform to bring dignity to underprivileged schoolgirls.

Johannesburg, South Africa (28 May 2025) – We’ve shared many stories about the incredible humans and heroes championing a world where period poverty is but a distant memory in our country.

Today, in commemoration of World Menstrual Hygiene Day, we share the touching efforts of media personality, entrepreneur and father of three girls, TT Mbha, who has used his connections to distribute sanitary pads to underprivileged school girls.

In a video he posted earlier today, he is seen sporting bright pink overalls and pink sneakers as he dances happily before the camera and is soon joined by two of his daughters whom he shares what he’ll be getting up to.

As part of the massive global movement to address period poverty and foster a period-friendly world, TT will be playing his part by repainting girls’ restrooms and donating 1,500 sanitary packs to underprivileged Grade 4 to 12 girls at JS Mpanza Primary School in Diepkloof and Emshukantambo Secondary School in Pimville.

TT also added that this was also a call to girl dads to talk to their daughters about periods and menstruation from as early as the age of seven.

His post and efforts received love online as social media users commended how TT was going above and beyond to address a prevalent issue in many communities and helping restore the confidence and dignity of many young girls who often have nowhere to turn to when “that time of the month” comes.

We don’t need superpowers to make the world a better place. Kind hearts and acts of pure compassion can make the real impact our society so desperately needs.

Thanks for demonstrating this so well, TT. Know that your efforts are supported and appreciated!

From recording captivating covers of her favourite artists in her bedroom to becoming the first-ever female South African artist to be featured on the Spotify Single Programme, rising musician Lusanda is set to amplify her voice on a global scale!

Johannesburg, South Africa (28 May 2025) Rising South African singer and songwriter Lusanda Ngcbo, who goes by the mononym Lusanda, has emerged as the first-ever female South African artist to be featured on the Spotify Single Programme with her rendition of Mad World!

Born in Durban and raised in Johannesburg, Lusanda didn’t set out to be a singer. In fact, for most of her life, the 24-year-old artist thought her future was in dance.

Her earliest memories are those filled with music and movement. In her Spotify profile, she shares about growing up dancing (a classically trained ballerina since age five), playing marimbas, and singing in choirs before eventually enrolling in choreography studies at the University of Cape Town. Music was always in the background, but it wasn’t until she started posting TikTok covers that her voice found its way to the forefront.

Lusanda initially captured the internet’s attention through a series of TikTok covers that showcased her smooth vocals and talent for merging R&B with pop, rap, and Amapiano genres.

In 2023, a particularly spontaneous upload, a cover of Outkast’s iconic song Hey Ya, signalled a new phase in her life. The video swiftly went viral, racking up millions of views in just a few weeks and attracting offers from music producers.

Spotify Single is a global initiative that provides artists with a platform to create and share original music recordings, including reimagined versions of their own songs and covers of songs they admire.

Lusanda, known for her emotionally resonant vocals, transforms Gary Jules’ version of the Tears for Fears classic into something uniquely her own and infuses Mad World with a deeply personal and distinctly South African essence.

“I wanted to add colour through my voice,” Lusanda states, and she accomplishes this with remarkable clarity and control, solidifying her position as a standout voice from the region.

With more original music forthcoming, Lusanda is set to take the South African music scene by storm.

The Grace Factory is embarking on its most ambitious endeavour yet, and it is all to support vulnerable mothers and their newborns.

Johannesburg, South Africa (28 May 2025) – Mandela Day is around the corner – a day dedicated to extending compassion and goodwill. It is a time that truly pulls on hearts and inspires communities to make a difference wherever possible, all in honour of our beloved hero, uTata.

At the heart of this movement, down at The Grace Factory, where volunteers pour their hearts into supporting moms and babies, this year’s Mandela Day sets up the stage for their biggest packing day yet!

On 19 July 2025, The Grace Factory is aiming to pack an ambitious 1,500 maternity packs in one day across three cities (Johannesburg, Durban and Vanderbijlpark) for vulnerable mothers and their tiny tots!

“This large-scale event aims to bring together individuals, organisations, and communities to celebrate the spirit of giving and service.

“This is one of our most significant efforts to date, and to make it a success, we need broad support from our communities,” says Sarah Cressey.

The Grace Factory team is known for bringing warm waves of kindness to public hospital maternity wards and anywhere else there is a need.

To make this big goal a reality, the organisation is actively collecting and accepting donations of newborn-sized clothing, beanies, socks, and receiving blankets, as well as wet wipes, sanitary pads and financial donations.

“Your donation, of any amount, will go directly toward funding the contents of these maternity packs.

“If many individuals contribute, we can reach our goal and touch 1,500 lives in a single day,” Sarah adds.

Packing day venues will be announced closer to the date. To get involved and show a little compassion to some mamas and their babas, pop an email to info@thegracefactory.co.za or ellouise@thegracefactory.co.za.

Cheshire Home Summerstrand is turning the big FIVE-OH, and they’re throwing a golden jubilee fete that promises to be the best one yet!

Summerstrand, South Africa (28 May 2025) – Cheshire Home Summerstrand will be marking its 50th birthday with an exciting golden jubilee fete!

For 50 incredible years, the home, which is part of the larger Leonard Cheshire Disability Homes organisation,  has been a source of strength, comfort and a place to call home for countless residents with physical disabilities.

“We are so proud of where we have come from, and so excited to take on the next 50 with renewed energy and the spirit of taking this Home to a new level,” shares the Cheshire Home Summerstrand manager, Deidre Burger.

With a vision to alleviate societal barriers, the home encourages residents to live fully and reach their highest potential, while providing the conditions necessary for the physical, mental and social well-being.

Mark your calendars for 7 June

Each and every year, staff organise and host an annual fete with the aim of making R300,000.

“This year, we are going to stretch this – and aim for R500,000 to align our 50th birthday celebration to something bigger, and more special,” says Deidre.

The fete has grown in popularity and is now a highly esteemed event on the PE/GQ calendar.

With hopes to make this year’s event bigger and better, Diedre and the team of dedicated staff and volunteers invites the public to be part of making it the most memorable yet.

“We invite you to participate, either through donations of cash, products, services or volunteering at the event.

“We also ask that you share the details with friends and family so that we can enjoy the company of a large crowd. We will have live entertainment, longer shopping hours and an auction at 11am, which is always a popular attraction on the day.”

Space is also available to a host of independent stalls at the front of the Home.

“You are welcome to rent a space to advertise and sell your products, or merely come and support these wonderful businesses at our event,” Deidre explains.

Donations for items such as assorted cakes, fresh produce, light foods, tea, coffee, as well as pre-loved household goods, towards hosting a successful event will also be highly appreciated.

The fete will be held at Cheshire Home Summerstrand on 7 June from 8am-1pm. To make a contribution and to be a part of making the annual fete extra special, call Diedre on 041 583 2183.

He helped make peri-peri global but now Robbie Brozin is turning his fire toward something even bigger… the soul of a city.

Johannesburg, South Africa (28 May 2025) – There’s something incredible that happens when you sit down with someone who not only dreams of a better South Africa… but rolls up their sleeves and actually gets stuck in to make it happen.

On this week’s episode of Good Things with Brent Lindeque, I had the absolute privilege of chatting to Robbie Brozin (yes, that Robbie Brozin), the co-founder of Nando’s, the man behind Goodbye Malaria, and the driving force behind the growing movement that is Jozi My Jozi.

You might know him because of peri-peri chicken and those cheeky Nando’s ads but his purpose has always been deeper than spice. These days, his mission is clearer than ever: he wants to fix Johannesburg. Not for clout, not for likes, not for a quick win… but because he genuinely loves this city. And it’s that kind of passion that’s hard not to be inspired by.

“Joburg’s got soul,” he tells me. “We just have to clean it up a bit and show people how amazing it already is.”

Robbie’s story is a proudly South African one, from building an international food brand rooted in local flavour, to fighting malaria across Africa, and now investing his time, energy and heart into revitalising Jozi.

He’s not shouting from the sidelines; he’s hands-on, funding artists, cleaning up spaces, building bridges between business and community and lighting a fire under what could be possible if more people joined in.

What struck me most in our chat is how much he believes in us. In South Africans. In our creativity, our resilience, our humour and our ability to overcome.

“The answers aren’t somewhere else,” Robbie says. “They’re right here. In us. We just need to believe it.”

And that’s what this episode is about. It’s about possibility. About taking ownership. About finding your lane and doing something, anything, to make where you live better.

Robbie Brozin is one of those rare humans who makes you want to do more. Be more. He reminds us that it’s not about waiting for someone else to fix things. It’s about starting. It’s about showing up. It’s about finding the good and growing it.

And that, my friends, is a good thing. A really good thing.

Winning a golf tournament in a foreign country is an incredible feat, but imagine doing it alone, without anyone to share your triumph. Well, not on South Africa’s watch! A group of golfers went out of their way to celebrate a foreign champion and show him the BEST time. It’s the heartwarming story of trophies, tequila and new friends!

South Africa (27 May 2025) – Imagine being alone in a foreign country for a sports tournament, winning and having a group of kind locals go out of their way to celebrate your victory and make your stay as comfortable as can be!

This was the experience for a recent visitor who had come down to South Africa for an anticipated Sunshine Tour golf tournament at a local club.

Sharing this feel-good story with us was a member of the club and one of our Good Things Guy readers, who confirmed that a foreigner won the tournament, resoundingly too, but unfortunately didn’t have anyone to celebrate his triumph with.

After the other members noticed the champion sitting alone with his trophy, having a drink, the South African spirit of togetherness came alive in the best way as they asked him to join their table.

What began as a celebratory tequila (inspired by the winner’s Mexican origins) quickly escalated into an unforgettable display of hospitality!

After the round of tequila, they naturally wanted to order some more celebratory drinks, but the winner mentioned that it was getting late and that he still needed to get to the airport to pick up his rental car.

In true ‘Good Things Guy’ style, one of the gentlemen enjoying the celebration with him happened to be a general manager for a car dealership. He insisted that the winner not go pick up the rental car, but instead would provide him with a car to use during his stay.

After a fun evening in the company of new friends, the locals made sure he got back safely to his hotel and his car to use was promptly delivered the next morning, turning a lonely win into a heartwarming experience of camaraderie and genuine South African kindness!

Twelve hours of non-stop performance. That’s what it took for a dedicated group of drama students to transform their love for the arts into a powerful charity challenge. Every song, dance, and dramatic moment was a step towards giving back and making a real difference for underserved communities.

Johannesburg, South Africa (27 May 2025) – In an incredibly inspiring display of using their talents for good, a group of 26 dedicated students and their three coaches from a local performing arts studio, Upstage Concepts, took centre stage for a cause close to their hearts on Thursday, 16 May.

Together, they committed to a 12-hour performing arts marathon, which ran from 18.30 pm to 6.30 am. Their epic night of singing, dancing, acting, and improvisation at the studio raised over R75,000 in donations for the Rivers Foundation, showcasing their passion for the arts and their powerful commitment to making a difference.

Family, friends, and members of the wider community rallied behind the initiative, sponsoring the young performers and donating goods that will go directly to those in need through the Rivers Foundation’s outreach programmes.

Expressing her pride in the students was Head Coach Jill Avis, who ran the event alongside two other dedicated coaches.

“These are amazing drama students who love to perform, and they wanted to use their talents and passion to help others. It’s been truly heartwarming to see how committed they were to giving back.”

The Rivers Foundation, known for its work supporting vulnerable communities with food, education, and healthcare, will distribute the donated items in the coming weeks.

This event highlighted the power of the arts to bring people together and demonstrated how young people can be leaders in creating positive change.

The studio hopes to make the charity challenge an annual tradition, proving that when creativity meets compassion, the results can be truly remarkable!

In a stunning showcase of South Africa’s craftsmanship, our very own Zoalize Jansen van Rensburg wowed Miss World judges in India in a gown that celebrated the vibrancy of our nation, embodied unity, innovation, and humble strength!

Hyderabad, India (27 May 2025) – Zoalize Jansen van Rensburg graced the 2025 Miss World South Africa stage over the weekend and did more than just turn heads!

Her breathtaking creation by local designer Juan William Aria, which was a masterpiece that celebrated the richness of South Africa’s natural beauty and cultural soul, won judges over, giving her the World Designer Award!

The Pretoria-born model is currently in Hyderabad, India, where she is competing alongside some of the world’s most influential women to receive the coveted crown of Miss World.

According to Miss World, the award-winning dress was crafted from satin glass fabric and adorned with custom artwork and hand-embroidered motifs; the gown is a vibrant tribute to the nation’s flora. At its heart blooms the Protea, king of all flowers and national symbol of South Africa, embodying unity, innovation, and humble strength.

An overjoyed Zoalize expressed her deep gratitude to the designer, calling the gown “a celebration of who we are as a people—diverse, rooted, and proud.”

With only four days remaining until the new Miss World is announced, a hopeful Zoalize reflects on what has been an adventure of a lifetime.

“I got to share the story of all the wonderful friends and family of my project @nevertooyoungtoadvocate , giving them the light and visibility through the beauty with a purpose initiative had been fulfilling.

“I have felt empowered and supported every step of the way through everyone supporting me here in Hyderabad as well as back home. My gratitude goes out to you all, she said in a recent post.

Zoalize, you’ve already made us so proud!

We wish our current Miss World title holder the very best as she vies for the crown yet again.
