Darren Scott and his iconic voice echoed through radios for over 40 years… now, South Africans are echoing their love back as they honour a man who brought light, laughter and warmth to countless lives.

South Africa (27 May 2025) – South Africa is celebrating the life of Darren Scott, a veteran radio presenter whose iconic voice and warm spirit touched millions. Scott sadly passed away on 27 May 2025 after a courageous battle with stage four melanoma. In his 61 years, he became more than just a radio host, he was a household name and a symbol of unity and positivity for many.

Today, even in mourning, the nation remembers him with overwhelming love, fond memories, and gratitude for his immeasurable contributions.

A Four-Decade Legacy on Air

Darren Scott’s broadcasting career spanned over 40 years, during which he became a familiar voice in homes and cars across South Africa. He launched his career in the early 1980s and went on to work at some of the country’s biggest radio stations, from Capital Radio 604 and Radio Bop to 5FM, East Coast Radio, and most recently HOT 102.7FM. He even hosted the popular “Just Plain Breakfast” show on Jacaranda FM in the early 2000s, making morning commutes more enjoyable for countless listeners.

Over the decades, Darren informed, entertained, and connected with audiences through music, talk, sport, and laughter. In 2024, he marked an astonishing 40 years in radio and was rightfully inducted into the Radio Awards Hall of Fame, cementing his status as a South African broadcast legend.

Colleagues and listeners alike describe Darren as a true broadcast icon and a pioneer who helped shape the local radio landscape. He had an encyclopaedic knowledge of sports and a quick wit that made every show engaging. If you ever found yourself laughing in traffic at his on-air antics or learning a new sports fact during a big game weekend, you weren’t alone, Darren had a knack for bringing joy and insight to everyone tuning in.

Beyond the microphone, he also mentored younger presenters and was known for his generosity and kindness off-air. “He is so used to being the one who is helping others,” noted his ex-wife, Sarah-Kate Accetta, highlighting Darren’s natural tendency to uplift those around him. This caring nature made him not just a radio star, but a beloved figure in his community.

A Nation Rallies: No Legend Fights Alone

When Darren was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer recurrence, South Africans responded with an outpouring of support that speaks to the deep affection the nation had for him.

In early 2025, as Darren faced mounting medical bills for life-saving treatments, his friends, family, and fans stepped up in a big way. Sarah-Kate Accetta, his ex-wife and close friend, launched a BackaBuddy crowdfunding campaign to help cover his medical expenses.

Donations flooded in almost immediately, over R130,000 was raised in just the first 48 hours. Within a few days the fund grew to more than R500,000 thanks to the public’s overwhelming support and it continued climbing towards its goal of R960,000.

This incredible generosity left Darren and his family profoundly moved and grateful.

“I cannot put into words how humbling and heartwarming it has been since I made Darren’s Back-a-Buddy post. From the bottom of my heart, thank you!”

Sarah-Kate wrote in an update, thanking every person who shared, donated or even left a kind comment. “You are the Ubuntu that the USA will never know!” she added, praising the uniquely South African spirit of community that rallied behind Darren.

Support for Darren went beyond monetary donations. The radio and music industry united to honour their friend and colleague in his time of need. Fellow presenters from various stations planned special events, and an all-star benefit concert aptly titled “Benefit for Darren – No Legend Fights Alone” was organised to raise funds and lift Darren’s spirits.

On 14 May 2025, iconic South African artists including Ard Matthews, Jesse Clegg, Louise Carver, Kurt Darren, and band Just Jinjer took to the stage alongside comedians like Dave Levinsohn and Mark Banks – all performing in tribute to Darren.

It was an unforgettable night of music, memories and hope, exemplifying the message that when one of South Africa’s most iconic voices needed help, the nation didn’t hesitate to answer the call. Darren’s long-time listeners turned up, his peers volunteered their talents, and even his current radio home, HOT 102.7FM, pledged ongoing support, covering costly treatments and ensuring he stayed on full salary while he focused on his health.

This communal embrace showed Darren that he was not fighting alone; an entire country was in his corner, echoing back the love he had broadcast for years.

Remembering the Warmth of Darren’s Spirit

Throughout his battle, Darren remained humble and deeply appreciative of the love surrounding him. He publicly thanked South Africans for their support as he fought bravely, and despite health setbacks he even returned to the airwaves whenever he could, determined to continue doing what he loved – connecting with listeners.

Those close to him shared how much the encouragement meant to Darren. The flood of messages and prayers not only buoyed his spirits, but also brought comfort to his family. According to Sarah-Kate, even their sons found solace in seeing how cherished their father was by so many people during his fight. In her words, Darren was “humbled” by the nationwide show of kindness, and he drew strength from every gesture of support.

In the wake of his passing, Sarah-Kate expressed deep gratitude for the compassion and generosity that surrounded Darren in his final chapter. She has kindly asked that everyone keep Darren’s children, Mark and Matthew, in their thoughts and prayers in the days ahead. The two boys, whom Darren adored, now carry forward their father’s legacy of resilience and positivity. They, along with all of South Africa, have been uplifted by the incredible example of unity and love that Darren’s journey inspired.

Though Darren Scott has signed off for the last time, his legacy continues to shine brightly. Tributes are pouring from listeners, colleagues and friends, celebrating his life and the joy he brought to the airwaves. Many recall his infectious laugh, his passion for music and sports, and the genuine warmth that made everyone feel like part of one big radio family.

Jenna Clifford, an inspiring businesswoman, designer and beloved local icon has passed away, taking with her, her sparkle, but leaving behind a decades long legacy that will shine on.

Johannesburg, South Africa (21 May 2025) – Late last year, we had the pleasure of meeting Jenna Clifford, when she was honoured as a local and lekker participant in the ‘My Barbie Story’ book. The iconic designer wasted no time in sharing her own story and with it, left us in awe of her cander and fearless personality.

Jenna made no secret that her life started rougher than most, but she fearless forged her way forward and became one of the country’s most beloved jewellery designers. Rubbing shoulders with global diplomates, local sports stars and even our very-own Nelson Mandela; Jenna had a way of connecting with everyone.

Her journey into design started in the 1980s, but through her dedication and passion, officially launched the brand of Jenna Clifford Designs in 1992. She has been a stalwart of the industry ever-since.

Beyond her defining career with beautiful jewels, Jenna was a fierce advocate for women’s rights and equality. This was the Jenna we met and grew to admire; outspoken and encouraging women to claim their space. In 2008, she was honoured as the South African ambassador and torchbearer for the United Nations Millennium Development Goal 3: Call to Action Global Campaign, a defining moment in her advocacy for women’s rights.

Philanthropy has always been a part of Jenna’s ethos. “I took up the torch, and I make changes where I can”. From working to fight breast cancer, supporting non-profits, running mentoring programmes and more, helping create awareness for the causes closest to her heart was a big part of her life.

She has helped raise funds as a tribute to all the South African women who have overcome challenges and gone on to inspire others.

While the walls of her studio were lined with images of the whose-who of the world, it was the family photos scattered between those larger than life images that spoke the loudest. It was clear her family was the thing that made her feel most proud.

In a statement shared by her beloved daughters, who gave thanks to all the kindness, love and support sent to the family during the short but fierce cancer battle, they reiterated what we got to learn in a short space of time; that Jenna Clifford was more than a designer, she valued kindness and care above all. She nurtured the spirit of Ubuntu and unearthed the beauty in others.

“Our mom was an icon, mentor, friend and hero to so many. To hear and read your stories — to see our mom through your eyes—has been incredibly moving and truly comforting. She touched so many lives with her kindness, her unstinting generosity of spirit, and her steadfast belief in the transformative and redeeming power of love.

Mom cared deeply for others, poured love into countless lives and lived a life of self-sacrifice. Her character was magnetic, she was inspiring and she believed passionately in supporting others to realise their inherent potential. Her passionate belief in others encouraged so many to elevate their ambitions and dream bigger. She was at her happiest when she was supporting others to achieve their dreams.

Mom’s greatest legacy is one of joyful giving. She was deeply generous with her time, her inspired ideas and her love. She always gave happily, freely and without hesitation.”

Jenna passed away peacefully on the 20th of May 2025, surrounded by her nearest and dearest. Rest beautifully, Jenna.

Every dog was the BEST dog to dear Arthur. More than just a dog walker, this fallen legend effortlessly brought joy to countless dogs and has left an irreplaceable void in the Knysna Animal Welfare Society family.

Knysna, South Africa (25 March 2025) – The Knysna Animal Welfare Society (KAWS) and its many four-legged buddies have lost a true legend who dedicated his life to bringing them love and light.

Known for his loving nature and warm smile, Arthur was a friendly face to many at the KAWS kennels on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, where he spent most of his days (and many, many years) finding joy in walking dogs patiently waiting for the day they would be welcomed into a loving family.

“He always arrived with toys, treats and anything new and exciting he thought the dogs might want.

“He was more than just a dog walker. Every ounce of his being was poured into the kennels. He loved every animal on the property as if they were his own. Some days, he would be the only walker, yet he still ensured that every single dog got a walk,” KAWS penned in a tribute post.

Arthur’s heart quite literally beat for KAWS and its rescue doggo residents. In addition to volunteering four days a week, he wouldn’t leave for home until every dog had been taken for a walk or played with. He was hands-on in every kind of way.

His commitment to the animals and the charity as a whole is something KAWS members have struggled to capture in words – symbolising just what a remarkable human this man truly was.

He regarded animals as valuable beings deserving attention, care, and treats, even when others overlooked them or had previously suffered neglect before arriving at KAWS.

“KAWS was his everything. Arthur, we aren’t sure how we will navigate the next while without you but know that we will harness your spirit in everything we do.

“We will miss you every day. The dogs will miss you forever,” KAWS adds.

We honour and celebrate this fallen hero on a life well lived. Rest well, Arthur.

Global (31 August 2022) – People on social media are mourning the tragic passing of Charlbi Dean, an up-and-coming South African actress who tragically passed away weeks before her Oscar-tipped film “Triangle of Sadness”, which many believed was her big break into stardom.

A representative for the South African actress told TMZ that she sadly passed away Monday from an “unexpected sudden illness” in a New York City hospital.

Colleagues and industry leaders have taken to social media to express their sadness.

“What a massive shock and tragedy. She’s so witty and deadpan and clockwork-precise in Triangle of Sadness, and I was so excited to see a new South African talent on the international scene. My thoughts are with all her loved ones and collaborators.” – Guy Lodge, Film Critic for Variety, The Observer and The Guardian.

“Truly saddened by the news of Charlbi Dean’s sudden passing. It has been a gift to bear witness to her incredible talent in Triangle of Sadness, among many others.” – Toronto Film Festival.

Dean was born and raised in Cape Town to Joanne and Johan Kriek. She began modelling at the age of six, appearing in commercials and catalogues. She signed with Alfa Model Management when she was 12 and was homeschooled from the age of 14. She travelled between Cape Town, where she attended Waterfront Theatre School, and the likes of Tokyo, New York, and London for her career.

In 2010, Dean made her acting debut in the film adaptation of Spud as Amanda, a role she would reprise in the sequel Spud 2: The Madness Continues. She went on to star in the films Don’t Sleep in 2017 and An Interview with God in 2018. During the same year, she landed the role of Syonide, a recurring character she played for two seasons of the DC Universe series Black Lightning.

In February 2020, it was announced Dean had joined the cast of Ruben Östlund’s satirical film Triangle of Sadness, which premiered at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival. Many believed this was her big break into Hollywood stardom.

Thirty-six names of South African heroes who died in the line of duty were added to this year’s wreath-laying ceremony.

Western Cape, South Africa (07 August 2022) – A wreath-laying ceremony was attended by relatives of some of the heroes who have died in the line of duty and during the COVID-19 pandemic on Saturday, 6 August 2022.

The City of Cape Town’s annual Remembrance Day service is held in honour of fallen staff members across the enforcement and emergency services.

“Every day, the courageous women and men of the City of Cape Town’s Metro Police Department, Law Enforcement, Traffic Services and Fire Services put on their uniforms and badges, and go out to protect our communities and us in every part of the city,” said Cape Town Mayor, Geordin Hill-Lewis.

“When they leave home, they hope to return safely to their families and children.”

“But they also know that they will face danger in their work and that sometimes their duty calls on them to place themselves in harm’s way.”

“Today, we honour those selfless public servants, and we express our profound gratitude to each one of them. Today we pay solemn tribute to those who did not return from their shifts – those who gave their lives in service of the residents of Cape Town.”

The inaugural event was hosted in 2017 when the Safety and Security Directorate’s memorial wall at the Cape Town Civic Centre was first unveiled.

The memorial features five silhouettes representing the departments within the Safety and Security Directorate: Metro Police, Traffic Services, Law Enforcement, the Fire and Rescue Service, and Disaster Risk Management – along with a list of names of those in whose memory it has been erected.

It contains the names of 36 staff members who have died in the line of duty and 26 who succumbed to COVID-19.

“We have thousands of staff members who devote themselves to the safety of others, day after day, often under very difficult circumstances. The service members we have lost in the line of duty bears testament to the risks that our staff face and take in the interest of public safety. The installation of the memorial wall and the annual Remembrance Service are tokens of our deep appreciation for the men and women who don the uniform, in spite of the risks, and to ensure that we never forget the sacrifices made by those who died in service of Cape Town.

“We owe them an enormous debt of gratitude for their commitment and dedication. To their loved ones, and to us as colleagues, many of whom are still struggling with the loss, I want to ask that we keep honouring their legacy,” said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.
