A video that’s amassed millions of views had some people looking at South Africa (in a good way). After all, we are a fun-loving nation known for our dance moves. So, where were the Spidermen who stole the show at a wedding from, and should we make them honorary South Africans?

Global (04 May 2025) — Some brides and grooms fear guests stealing the show on their wedding day, not a troupe of Spidermen dancers. Well, now we’ll all have to keep our eyes out for spidermen on the move thanks to a viral scene from a wedding that has the internet giggling, applauding and looking to book the superheroes for their own big days.

After the video started picking up traction, some people assumed that it “could only be in South Africa”. After all, we are a fun-loving nation known for our dance moves. And Amapiano’s tracks in the background certainly helped the argument that this could have a proudly South African vibe.

“South Africa is such a strange place, how [are] we supposed to explain this to other people,” one user wrote, which united other users who thought the same.

But alas, this is a moment South Africa can’t take credit for, as this clip hails all the way from Tanzania. And the leader of the spidermen is Jackie Nyamambaya, AKA the Tanzanian Spiderman.

However, South Africans were hardly mad at the confusion. Instead, we’re proud that our love of fun and our music are reaching other parts of the world!

So, should the Spidermen be considered honorary South Africans? And—the real question—would you ever allow them to take over the dance floor on your wedding day?

‘Klein Kwagga’ is the kind of kid who could rival anyone on a dance floor. Famous for his joy-infectious dance moves, Kwagga has earned a fanbase that includes Kelly Clarkson! In a recent and exciting moment for Spur staff, Kwagga popped in for a dance party, and our day is better for having watched it!

Heidelberg, South Africa (07 April 2025) — A tiny dancer known as Klein Kwagga (Dirkco Jansen van Nieuwenhuizen) hopped onto radars around the world after he unintentionally stole the show at his sister’s dance concert.

As 8-year-old Kwagga tells the story, siblings had been invited to dance ‘for a piece of chocolate’. Well, Kwagga certainly earned more than a sweet treat that day; the video of his moves caught like wildfire on social media and quickly catapulted young Kwagga toward a whole new planet of appreciation and fame. All this from a youngster being unapologetically authentic and dancing his heart out.

@kleinkwagga1 Doen dit lyfie doen dit! @Bernice West #Dans #fun #show ♬ original sound – KleinKwagga

Kwagga went on to earn a significant fanbase that ranges from his fellow South Africans to the likes of Kelly Clarkson, who not only interviewed him and his mom, but also called his interview (part of her segment, ‘What I’m Liking’) her favourite at the time.

You might also recognise Kwagga for starring in the ‘Dans Kwagga’ music video alongside JAN JAN JAN, which received 3.1 million views.

Despite all that’s come from that one humble moment on his sister’s stage, the infectious joy that dance brings is still what it’s all about for Kwagga—a sentiment captured recently when the sensation brought all the moves to Spur staff last week.

In the video, Kwagga is captured dancing with the restaurant’s staff while smiles lit up all over the ‘dance floor’ like stage lights switching on. The moment made our day better for having watched it, and we’re sure it’ll do the same for you:

Surveillance camera footage captured coffee lovers in a unique position—dancing for free coffee from a local cafe! Have a watch (and learn a move or two):

Sea Point, South Africa (27 October 2024) — South Africans celebrated Heritage Day in all kinds of ways this year, but one of the best was those who found themselves making a mark on a Sea Point cafe’s surveillance footage as they danced for free coffee.

If you know Cape Town well, you know it’s nothing if not a coffee lovers playground. Coastal neighbourhood Sea Point has some of the best coffee shops out of town, and one of them decided to offer up free coffee on Heritage Day to those brave enough to bust out all the moves for it!

With a chalkboard sign, Kanela Cafe offered those passing by a challenge—dance for free coffee for all the internet to see.

From shy movers and shakers to trio’s putting on a full choreographed routine—it was all laughs and smiles from the team at Kanela as they watched people serve up platters of moves for the free cups.

Kanela is a gorgeous Greek-inspired cafe; so it only made sense that dancing would be the way to the treasure trove. And really, do most South Africans even need an excuse to dance?

Though Heritage Day is done and dusted, the idea was a marker of one of the biggest elements that cross-sections all our country’s cultures—we all love to have fun.

Perhaps next year, one of our famous dancing cops will pop by and get arrested for stealing the show!

It might be time for this ‘stop-go’ coordinator to trade roads for stages! With the kind of energy that could turn any motorists’ frown upside down, Chapman’s Peak got to enjoy its own joy-filled roadshow:

Chapman’s Peak, South Africa (06 September 2024) — We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: traffic co-ordinators in South Africa are just built different. From traffic officers giving the Eastern Cape demure dance moves to kickstart their days to the ‘stop-go’ legend we’re about to fill you in on—South Africa knows a thing or two about turning ‘let’s get this show on the road’ into a very literal expression.

Recently on Chapman’s Peak, motorists were met with someone who might just be the happiest person to ever tell cars to stop and go, perhaps in history.

With the kind of moves that would stop traffic even if there weren’t any roadworks on display, the ‘stop-go’ man has stolen the internet’s attention for all the right reasons.

Shared by TikTok user Fazlie, the video has soared to over 700,000 views with many sharing that it gave them the extra dose of joy they needed, and others adding that he certainly deserves a raise.

Here are Some of the Best Comments About the Stop-Go Hero!

“Life is so full [of] negative things. That guy doesn’t know how many smiles he puts on peoples faces each day.”

“This makes being stuck in traffic all worth it, please spread the joy to Gauteng.”

“He is doing it daily…I drive through every day and he is waiting there with his dance moves and big smile…”

“The vibes are unmatched.”

“The joy in South Africa is contagious!”

“What a breath of fresh air! Thanks for making me smile!”

“This just made my day. My heart is full seeing the joy he must be bringing to the drivers after a loooong wait, these stop and go’s aren’t for the faint hearted.”

Another dancing traffic officer has stolen the road show with fine-tuned, subtle moves that scream demure and ‘I’m just waiting for Tyla to see this’.

Port Elizabeth, South Africa (02 September 2024) — We’re not sure if there’s a dance-led incentive programme going around for traffic officers in South Africa, but if there isn’t, there should be. Another dancing traffic officer has busted out all the “very demure” moves; revealed to be the kind of cop who consistently makes Port Elizabeth’s mornings that much better.

After TikTok user ‘BJaded’ shared a clip of the cop adding, “There are people who wake up like this” in reference to his early morning moves, it wasn’t long until fellow Eastern Cape drivers (and South Africans in general) had a field day filled with feel-good notions in the comment section.

@bjaded79 Give me what he had for breakfast 😫 #tiktoksouthafrica #goodmorning #fypシ゚viral #foryou #bjaded79 ♬ TGIF – GloRilla

Something about the subtle hip rolls and his seemingly choreographed direction made all drivers feel a little better about life. With efficient sass and traffic control to boast, we’re not sure if this officer will do a world tour of South African intersections or end up as a backup dancer for the likes of Tyla!

South Africans React to the Demure Dancing Cop

“When SABC3 said the stage is yours, he said ‘say less’.”

“Love this uncle, he makes my day even when I’m late.”

“I love our country, this would set my tone for my entire day.”

“I look forward to seeing him every time I’m in PE”.

“The perfect start to your morning and end of day if he’s on your route, which most take in Port Elizabeth just for him. 100% love this guy. Makes you smile no matter what you going through [at the moment].”

“If I love my job was a person.”

“Just the right amount of sass to get the day started.”

A ‘robot dancer’ gave South Africa all the smiles recently after his moves drove many locals to joyful destinations with many even sharing that moments like this are the reason they wouldn’t trade our country for the world!

South Africa (16 July 2024) — South Africans have said it before, and we’ll say it again: being bored in our country is a crime! This sentiment also happened to be one of the most-liked comments on a recent viral video that drove viewers to joyful emotions after a ‘robot dancer’ mover and shaker busted out all the moves during a red light; hyped up by the driver who was blasting the tunes.

Now, if you never take to South Africa’s busy roads, you’d be forgiven for wondering why a Beyoncé-challenging groove session might be taking place at a robot. Most of the time, there isn’t exactly an answer beyond the fact that South Africans love to have fun and won’t hesitate to show off their moves, no matter where we are. From traffic directors to bubbly strangers, dancing at the robots is just a fairly unique part of our culture, as is playing our music at full volume.

TikTok user Josh Jacobs was blasting Cassie’s Me and You at the right light when a man standing at the robots transformed into a full-on robot dancer with the most infectious smile.

What made the video especially heartwarming was that Josh hyped the man up while he danced, which in turn hyped Josh up for his drive ahead.

The video received over 75,000 likes, with many South Africans sharing that moments like this are the reason they’ll never leave South Africa and why they love our country so much.

An inspiring Cape Flats dancing duo has been selected to dance for the nation on the world stage. With each dance floor they meet, they’re showing young people from backgrounds like theirs that dreams aren’t defined by your street address.

Cape Flats, South Africa (03 July, 2023) — A young dancing duo headed for the global stage is in it for more than the applause. For Riana Jacobs and Morgan Achmat from the Cape Flats, their journey as a champion ballroom and Latin dancing pair means that hope follows them onto every stage; that someone watching might be a young person who chooses to follow their wildest dreams and not just the path that circumstances lead to for so many in these areas.

Hailing from Bishop Lavis and Manenberg, two areas on the Cape Flats known for gangsterism culture, the dancing duo stepped outside of where negative headlines and statistics premise their future.

The couple who have been gracing stages together for years wowed the country last year by being victorious at the 2022 South African Championships and were selected to represent South Africa in Germany for the WDSF World Championships Ten Dance under 21, set to take place in December.

For them, the representation on the global stage is more than simply representing South Africa. Their communities’ wishes aren’t just that they ‘break a leg’, but that they break stigmas. Both dancer share that their dedication goes beyond Latin or ballroom dancing skills, but to become role models for the generations to be.

The two are currently on a fundraising mission to secure their funding to Germany for the Championships on 9 December 2023 and are hosting events as well as a BackaBuddy campaign to get to the global stage. They are seeking community support for the massive opportunity, and you can find out more about being part of their success story here.

The fabulous NGO that unites animal-loving dancers is back after three years, ready to pirouette their way to sterilisation for more dogs in South Africa.

South Africa (29 June, 2023)—Dancers Love Dogs, the fabulous NGO supporting animals, is back after three years of hibernation due to the Pandemic. And, they might just be back and better than ever in 2023, set to showcase more shows and unite over 580 dancers sharing their skills to bolster sterilisation.

A special set of comeback shows across the country will see hundreds dancers raise funds for a mass sterilisation project that helps a plethora of animals beyond dogs, as they have done over the years since 2011.

Led and initiated by animal activist and former professional dancer Brigitte Reeve-Taylor, Dancers Love Dogs has raised over R4 million for the cause in the past thanks to the annual showcase, helping nearly 20 000 animals become sterilised.

And, even though the shows weren’t possible over the past three years, the public benefit organisation collaborated with the National Sterilization Project helped continue the Dancers’ work.

The shows will see troupes of dancers from various schools, studios and companies, including Gift of Dance, Basic Black, Dance for Change and Stellenbosch Dance Academy. All proceeds go to the sterilisation project that includes cats, pigs, rabbits, and donkeys.

The dance show will take place in Cape Town before soaring to Durban and Johannesburg. You can grab tickets here.

Dancing petrol attendants brought all the flair to filling up, turning this petrol station into a joyful dance floor!

Still Bay, South Africa (24 May, 2023) — In South Africa, there are few things we love to see more than a groove gone viral. We’re a joyful nation that beats to the rhythm of our own drum, and the kind of country where bursting into song or dance isn’t uncommon—from traffic officers to dancing petrol attendants.

We’ve seen sports fans lead movements through song and dance—uniting communities, and even South Africans abroad bringing joy to public transport commuters.

It doesn’t matter who you are, where you’re from or what you do for a living. In SA, anywhere can become a dance floor or stage, even a petrol station.

Recently, a petrol attendant and his colleagues added flair to the act of filling up in the Western Cape.

At one Engen petrol station, night shift turns into a night show as Rivaldo Rossouw and other petrol attendants joined in on the viral ‘Myztro’ trend sweeping the nation.

Everyone from students to school teachers have gotten behind the catchy trend, including the petrol patrol.

The petrol attendant has built up a portfolio of dancing videos, showcasing many moves to South African grooves from Amapiano to Afrikaans beats, often with others joining, infected by the contagious joyful energy.

We wouldn’t be surprised if this petrol attendant changes gears and turns into a backup or lead dancer one day!

In other bold and joyful South African news, a Dainfern College student recently stole the show by taking cues from romance films and asking a fellow student to be his date to the matric dance in front of the whole school, accompanied by song.

Good news, good moves and even better music, we’re always here for it.

Encountering traffic officers isn’t the highlight of most people’s days. But, for some, it was thanks to one dancing cop and his infectious dance moves. Have a look!

South Africa (4 April, 2023) — There are usually two options in South Africa when an inconvenience occurs. We either complain, or we dance. We’re pretty big fans of the latter, and the millions of people who loved the video of a dancing traffic officer agree.

Recently, a traffic officer turned ‘Rush Hour’ into ‘Step Up: Mzansi’ after he directed cars with a few moves we’re sure weren’t part of any traffic officer training programmes. The energy he exudes is a refreshing break from most traffic officer encounters, earning the dancer a ton of praise for his joy.

The clip, shared by @donovanmathebula on TikTok made many locals feel a little more proudly South African, and a lot more inspired to have the same kind of energy in their own jobs. It has since raked in 1.2 million views, which goes to show that even if a robot is out of order, there’s often still a little unexpected light in the middle of the road when it comes to South Africa.

The reactions to the video ranged from “Only in SA where life is a Netflix movie” to “give that man a cold drink” and “oh captain my captain”. Some users shared that he’s no longer dancing at the same spot and that his energy is missed for obvious reasons.

More Reactions:

“I will use this road daily.” —Mrs K on TikTok

“Well done to this man. We definitely need more officers like him.”—trevisenpillay on TikTok

“I love my country.” —Connie Smash on TikTok

“Imagine driving past you on a Monday Morning, [you] made my whole week.” —Lebogang on TikTok

Meanwhile in other officials performing news, the Pretoria-based team for Mi7 National Group caught Backstreet Boys fever and went viral for their lip-sync rendition!
