Two young men from a tiny Limpopo village just reminded South Africa what’s possible when passion, purpose and a second-hand computer collide. We sat down with the founders of NOVAR.

Limpopo, South Africa (12 May 2025) – In early May, a heartwarming story from Limpopo captured the nation’s attention. An educational app called NOVAR, developed by two self-taught friends, went viral after a TikTok video by the popular account Cool Story Bru showcased their journey. What happened next was nothing short of inspiring. South Africans rallied together, donating over R160,000 to help the young developers grow their dream.

We sat down with the founders of NOVAR to unpack what their app is all about and what’s happened since their overnight fame.

@coolstorybru_ These two South African men from a rural village in Limpopo have invented a game-changing app 😍🇿🇦👏 @Shibambu Marvel @Malunghelo 1Drop #southafrica #tiktoksouthafrica🇿🇦 ♬ original sound – Cool Story Bru! 🇿🇦

Marvel Shibambu and Malunghelo Mathonsi grew up as best friends in Gumbani, a small, under-resourced village in Limpopo. With no formal training in coding and no proper equipment, they shared a bold vision: to improve education for students like themselves.

“We didn’t even have a computer at first,” Marvel recalls. “We saved up just R700 to buy a second-hand PC and started learning to code from YouTube videos.”

Against all odds, the duo taught themselves programming from scratch and built an app they named NOVAR, aimed at providing free learning resources to high schoolers across South Africa. In just a few months, NOVAR has been downloaded tens of thousands of times by eager learners, proving that their hard work is paying off.

The turning point came when Cool Story Bru, a Cape Town-based content creator known for highlighting uplifting South African stories, shared Marvel and Malunghelo’s journey. The response was instantaneous.

“I actually cannot believe this is happening – we have raised 80,000 rand in 24 hours for the NOVAR app gents!” exclaimed the content creator in a follow-up update.

Donations poured in from across the country as people were moved by the friends’ determination. Within days, the founders’ crowdfunding campaign surpassed R120,000… and it’s now well over R160,000. These funds, they say, will be used to make the app completely free for all learners and to improve the platform’s offerings.

“We were stunned by how strangers believed in us,” says Malunghelo. “It’s not just about the money – it’s about knowing that our country believes in our vision. That encouragement fuels us to work even harder.”

The friends have even begun speaking with potential partners who could help take NOVAR to the next level. Buoyed by the nation’s enthusiasm, they are more motivated than ever to keep improving South African education one download at a time.

@shibambumarvel1Best time to be a learner I guess. let’s get as many people in to the NOVAR app. amazing announcements coming up this week♬ Clouds – Aitan A.I.

What exactly is the NOVAR App? Despite the viral buzz, NOVAR itself remains humble in its current form. Essentially a social media-style feed filled with educational content that Marvel and Malunghelo curate and upload themselves.

“Think of it like an educational community platform,” Marvel explains. “We have different sections for learners to explore.”

The duo say that the app’s interface is divided into several hubs and features. From “short lessons” to news and events.

“Right now, we upload most of the content ourselves,” Marvel says. “We pull together useful videos or create our own mini-lessons to share. It’s all about making learning fun and accessible.”

Some features are still basic, but the founders have big plans to enrich the content as their user base grows.

South Africa is incredibly fortunate to have a wide range of free educational tools available to learners. From national platforms to grassroots innovations, there’s a growing ecosystem of support. NOVAR joins this inspiring list. Not to compete but to contribute.

Speaking with the NOVAR founders, one thing is abundantly clear: their passion for education is infectious. These self-taught developers have faced down many challenges… from unreliable internet to an ageing second-hand computer, yet they never gave up.

“There were nights we felt stuck or frustrated,” Marvel admits. “But then we’d remember why we started this. We want to help even one kid get a better education. That kept us going.”

Now, with thousands of users and an entire country cheering them on, the duo is looking ahead. They plan to expand NOVAR’s content library, bring on qualified educators and mentors and refine the app’s technology.

“This is just the beginning,” Malunghelo smiles. “We have so many ideas… from adding more subjects and exam prep tools to maybe one day offering live tutoring. The support we’ve received makes us believe all of it is possible.”

For Marvel and Malunghelo, it all comes down to a simple belief.

“Education should never be a privilege; it should be a right,” Marvel says.

Their journey shows what’s possible when innovation meets determination. The app might not transform the education system overnight but it has already brought hope and excitement to students and supporters alike.

Perhaps the greatest lesson from NOVAR’s rise is the reminder that good news can bring people together. At a time when South Africa’s challenges often make headlines, this story of two young men from rural Limpopo, armed with nothing but a dream and a donated computer, has inspired a nation to rally behind them. It’s a story of community, possibility and the power of believing in something good. South Africans have opened their hearts (and wallets) to back Marvel and Malunghelo’s vision. And in turn, these founders are paying it forward by empowering the next generation of learners.

That’s the kind of positive cycle we can all celebrate.

@shibambumarvel1NOVAR: A Revolution Born in the Heart of Limpopo NOVAR is more than just an app—it is a dream, a purpose, and a promise born in the humble village of Gumbani in Malamulele, Limpopo. It was co-founded by Shibambu Mikhongelo Marvel and Malunghelo Mathonsi, two extraordinary young men shaped by their environment but driven by a vision far greater than their circumstances. Growing up in a rural village, Mikhongelo Marvel knew hardship intimately. His school had cracked chalkboards, no science labs, and no stable access to internet or technology. But his spirit was unshakable. He rose above, becoming not only a top learner at his school, but one of the brightest minds in his district and province. Yet, even as he excelled, he watched his classmates fall behind—not because they lacked potential, but because they lacked opportunity. Haunted by the inequality he witnessed, Marvel made himself a quiet promise: no child should ever be left behind simply because of where they were born. NOVAR is the fulfillment of that promise. It’s his way of rewriting not just his own past, but the story of thousands of learners across South Africa. By his side stands Malunghelo Mathonsi, a self-taught software developer with a heart as big as his dreams. From the same dusty village paths, Malunghelo taught himself to code using borrowed devices and public Wi-Fi spots. His love for technology was fueled by one thing: the desire to solve problems that matter. Together, these two visionaries became co-founders of NOVAR. NOVAR is an innovative, online learning platform built to give every learner—no matter their background—access to world-class education. With zero funding, no presence yet on iOS due to limited resources, and against all odds, NOVAR has already crossed 35,000+ downloads on the Google Play Store. The app is being used by over 5,000 active learners daily, many of whom rely on it as their lifeline to learning. But beyond numbers, NOVAR is a movement. A symbol of what can happen when resilience meets purpose. When rural dreams refuse to be silenced. When two village boys dare to believe that they can build a global education giant—from nothing but hope, grit, and faith. Marvel sees NOVAR as more than a business. To him, it’s redemption. It’s healing. It’s a love letter to every forgotten learner, every dusty classroom, and every teacher who tried their best with too little. It’s about giving today’s learners the future he once wished for himself. The journey is just beginning. NOVAR is not just changing education—it’s changing lives.♬ Ordinary – Alex Warren

South Africa just came second in a global “Food World Cup” on TikTok… and while we didn’t take the title, we definitely served the most flavour, the most laughs, and a whole lot of local pride.

Global (19 April 2025) – South Africa might not have clinched the title but we’ve officially cooked our way into the hearts (and stomachs) of the world. And we’re loving every bite of it.

A viral “Food World Cup” series on TikTok has captured global attention… and proudly served up a side of South African flavour. The creator behind the trend, Pushpek Sidhu, a Canadian TikToker with over a million followers spent the last 230 days tasting over 200 dishes from 90 countries. The idea was simple: create food battles between nations and let the flavours do the talking.

Against all odds, South Africa made it to the grand final, facing off against India – a culinary heavyweight in any competition.

From Bunny Chows to Vetkoek, Koeksisters, Boerie rolls and Kotas, South Africa served some serious competition along the way, knocking out dishes from Turkey, Korea, the West Indies and Brazil. With every round, our food stood strong… and so did the humour.

Pushpek did his absolute best but let’s just say he got very creative with our local terms. He bravely mispronounced Vetkoek as “wet cock” (we’ll never unhear it), and then doubled down by calling Koeksisters “cock sisters.” He also translated “Voetsek” completely wrong but honestly, it just added to the charm. We all know how tricky Afrikaans can be when you’re giving it a go for the first time.

The final showdown featured these matchups:

🇿🇦 Peri-Peri Chicken vs 🇮🇳 Tandoori Chicken – South Africa took the win!

🇿🇦 Boerie Roll vs 🇮🇳 Chicken Tikka Roll – India won that one (to be fair, “boerewors” isn’t easy to pronounce).

🇿🇦 Vetkoek vs 🇮🇳 Vada Pav – Vetkoek came out tops!

🇿🇦 Kota vs 🇮🇳 Dosa – India took the win.

🇿🇦 Bunny Chow vs 🇮🇳 Briyani – Briyani edged it.

🇿🇦 Malva Pudding vs 🇮🇳 Jalebi – South Africa took the sweet victory.

🇿🇦 Koeksisters vs 🇮🇳 Kala Jamun – This final round went to India… and secured their overall win.

India may have taken the title but South Africa brought the flavour, the fun and the full experience.

And the world noticed.

@pushpeksidhuINDIA VS SOUTH AFRICA – Food World Cup♬ original sound – Pushpek Sidhu

This entire journey was more than just food battles on TikTok… it was a global celebration of who we are. Our dishes, our culture, our South Africaness. All served up with a side of laughter and a whole lot of heart. People who’d never heard of a Bunny Chow are now craving one. Malva pudding has officially gone international. And thanks to Pushpek’s wildly off-mark pronunciations, the world now knows that Vetkoek is pronounced “wet cock”.

Someone in the comments said it best: “We didn’t just make it to the final. We made the whole thing worth watching.”

Call it what you want… but that sounds like a win to us.

Now, can someone please bring me a Boerie roll before I get emotional?

Voetsek!

In a touching video, an American woman beautifully illustrates how Ubuntu has resonated with her through genuine interactions with the warm-hearted people she encountered during a visit to Cape Town.

Cape Town, South Africa (17 April 2025) – An American woman who goes by @auntie.tyty on TikTok shared a heartwarming video about some of the things South Africa has taught her during a recent visit to Cape Town.

On top of her list was: Ubuntu. In a montage of clips showing shared moments with kind strangers, she shares how she has learned how the word means community, graciousness, welcoming and radical hospitality through interactions with South Africans.

Moved by the natural warmth of our people, she attempts to describe ubuntu as:

“The fact that this is your home and home is with people – I am because you are, you go deeper, I go deeper, we go deeper.

“It’s the ideal here that I’ve never experienced in the States; that is so important that everyone should be gracious and kind, and that if anyone needs help, assistance or support, we’re there to do it,” @auntietete shares in the video.

She also spoke about how, after meeting and interacting with a group of people in the span of an hour, they had invited her over to their home for dinner.

“They have connected me with resources, taught me how to plant a flower that I love. One beautiful woman even invited me to sing with her on her set,” @auntietete adds.

For her, ubuntu is an essence she can easily feel on our land because it’s a value that our people hold dear.

“I’m not even kidding it has changed my ethos, it has changed my internal spirit. Now, without a second thought, I’m always thinking, how can I contribute, and that is the spirit of ubuntu.”

What a great affirmation of how truly special our nation and its people are!

In a touching video, a daughter named Shaz lovingly details the extraordinary ways her mother shows up for her every single day – from waking up at the crack of dawn before Shaz gets ready for work to selling her dreadlocks to buy her a pair of shoes.

Tembisa, South Africa (11 April 2025) – A mother’s love knows no bounds. It’s no wonder that their love is described as unconditional.

Honouring her mother while capturing hearts online was Shaz, who shared a heartwarming TikTok video showcasing how her mother shows up for her in ways she cannot help but appreciate.

In a video, Shaz shares how she wakes at 4.30 am every morning to get ready for work, to find boiling water already prepared for her.

“This means she [mother] wakes up even earlier than 4.30 to make sure that everything is ready before I even start my day. Sometimes she even wakes me up before my alarm goes off and you’d think she would go back to sleep but no she stays up to make sure that I have everything that I need and on top of that accompanies me to catch a taxi to work,” Shaz shares.

Shaz also mentions an unforgettable memory of her mother going to Johannesburg only to return bald after selling her dreadlocks to get some money to buy Shaz a pair of shoes and trousers.

“I was so grateful. That’s when I realised there is nothing like a mother’s love in this world. I love her so much and I hope I continue to honour the ground that she walks on.

“I never want to see her struggle or lack anything in life. All I want is to see her happy. To see her living a life of joy and peace. She deserves nothing less after all,” Shaz says of her strong and loving single mother.

The TikTok post has garnered over 162k views and adoration from many Saffas who praised Shaz’s mother, whose loving sacrifices tugged at their hearts, prompting others to share their own cherished stories of maternal love, creating a heartwarming virtual embrace of the sacrifices and devotion of mothers.

Despite having very little in her bank account, Caitlin couldn’t shake the feeling that she needed to do something kind for the cleaner she noticed at the gym during her regular treadmill run.

South Africa (04 April 2025) – It was during her treadmill run in the gym that Caitlin was stopped in her tracks to take a moment to pause and notice someone who could do with a random act of kindness.

Even though she only had R34 in her bank account, it didn’t stop Caitlin from acting on the tugging feeling to put a smile on a cleaner’s face who unexpectedly got her attention and had her asking herself when last she had done something nice for someone, just because.

In a touching TikTok video, Caitlin documented herself writing Bible verses and attaching them to 32 mini Kit-Kat chocolate bars that she had been able to purchase using Checkers Sixty60 credits and decorating them with yellow flowers picked from her garden to give to the cleaner she’d noticed earlier.

@chaoswithcaitlin♬ original sound – womennsoul

In her post, she provided context about how she had been watching Christian-inspired TikTok videos that touched on the importance of being good to other people – and how it was at that moment that she saw the cleaner.

“A voice in my head said, you need to give her something today,” Caitlin says in the video.

“I just thought to share this with you because maybe it will inspire you to also do a random act of kindness.”

You never really know the true impact you have on those around you. You never know how much someone needs a smile that you can so effortlessly put on their face.

Caitlin’s random act of kindness and post just goes to show that you don’t have to spend a lot of money or wait for circumstances to change or move mountains to brighten up someone’s day. Just a little consideration and stepping outside your bubble may just be the answer!

President Cyril Ramaphosa was caught getting his steps in on a ‘hot girl’ walk, AKA: a cute walk you do no matter how much you’ve got on your mind or how busy you are. Though Cupcake might not have known what a hot girl walk was, his response to being asked whether he was on one is hilarious. Take a look:

Cape Town, South Africa (03 April 2025) — Why go on a regular walk when you can go on a hot girl walk? AKA, a walk in which you think about your goals, what you’re grateful for and how hot you are (or want to be). This is the kind of walk you take when, no matter how busy you are or how much you’ve got on your mind, you make the time for to boost your self-esteem (and get your steps in).

And recently, President Cyril Ramaphosa was caught on a hot girl walk of his own.

Though the President didn’t exactly know that he was on this genre of walk at the time, his response to being asked whether he was hot girl walking was hilarious.

The moment was captured by TikTok user, Minenhle Mbhele at what looks like the Sea Point promenade (AKA, hot girl walk central).

When Minenhle spotted Cupcake, she kindly asked him if he was on a hot girl walk.

“Hot girl? My god. How come ‘hot girl’?” The president asked, to which Minenhle explained “you know, we’re trying to stay hot, we’re trying to stay healthy.”

“Oh okay,” the President responded before adding “Me too…yes that’s why I’m here!”

@_minenhlem♬ original sound – Minenhle Mbhele

Considering that the government isn’t exactly in South Africa’s good books thanks to recent VAT headaches, we hope the president did some serious thinking whilst on his stroll. As for South Africans, it might be our sign to go on a walk of our own. After all, if we’re feeling frustrated, we might as well be hot at the same time.

Recently, a very important and wholesome conversation was had on the internet, and it was all about being whimsical. People started sharing all about the whimsical ways they enrich their lives, and it was too pure not to share:

Global (03 April 2025) — In a world where almost everyone you know spends a significant portion of time being stressed (or trying to de-stress), the economy is a nightmare directed by Stephen King, and the job market is (especially in South Africa) an extreme sport to navigate; an unexpected effort is helping people keep their sanity. Being whimsical may not change the world, but it’s certainly making individual worlds a better place to be.

Why Whimsical?

Recently, TikTok user Abigail Bailey posted a simple video.

“Girlies: what are some little things you do to be more whimsical”, she posed, adding that she loves knowing about cute little habits.

The girlies in question wasted no time in sharing their whimsy, and the internet was a better place for it. With over 7.6 million views, Abby’s question didn’t just start a conversation; it sparked a realisation: in a world where it feels like there is so little we can control, taking ownership of the small moments and turning them into something special goes a long way. That, and the responses were almost too pure to bear.

Here’s What People Shared:

“I wear matching pajamas every time I change my sheets so I can have what I call fancy sleep.”—Grace.

“[I say] ‘can you hold this please’ when I set my purse on an inanimate object.”—bugwash

“I thank candles before blowing them out.”—Katrean.

“I hold ‘office hours’ every Tuesday at a local coffee shop, which means I sit on the couch and order drinks for 4-5 hours while various friends and acquaintances visit me to yap [about] books and gossip.”—Kaityln Hunt

“I do face paint when I’m sad/bored because how can you be sad/bored when you’re spider-man.”—Marcell.

“I flip all the tails [of] pennies I find to heads so others can pick them up for luck.”—Destinybrown597

“I like to lift my pets up so they can look outside of windows they can’t normally look out of,”—Chloe.

“I keep extra (unused) lipgloss in my purse to give to girls if they need it. It’s like a little everyday party favour.”—Kate Speights.

“That would never happen in South Africa”: A TikTok user recently shared an experience he witnessed across the pond in which youngsters were showing disrespect to someone much older. The incident got him thinking about South Africa’s youth, to which he concluded such a matter would never have happened back home.

Global (01 April 2025) — TikTok user ‘CraigF’ recently sparked an important conversation that might offend some people, and might make others proud. After experiencing an odd moment during a tennis match in London in which he witnessed a group of children bullying one of the players (their elder), he found himself concluding that such a matter of manners would never have happened in South Africa.

According to the TikTok user, the children (who were behind the tennis court in a play area) began ‘chirping’ phrases like ‘you’re rubbish’ before graduating to chanting ‘loser’ at the player (who just laughed it off) for a fair amount of time.

Despite the chill oozing from the unnamed player, ‘CraigF’ found himself thinking about it all and comparing the children’s behaviour to the youth back in SA.

“Kids of all cultures [in South Africa] are much more obedient or nervous depending on your point of view,” he shared.

“Respect for your elders is really, really extreme in South Africa.”

There were many people who agreed with CraigF’s sentiments that the idea of South African children chanting loser at an elder simply wouldn’t happen.

Some chalked it down to the philosophy of Ubuntu, commenting, “The spirit of Ubuntu will never let that happen in South Africa.”

Others concluded that it was fear of parents that made kids more respectful, noting (jokingly) that, “In South Africa if you disrespect an elder on the street you have to pray your parents don’t find out because you’re good as dead if they do.”

There were also people who commented that receiving respect from youngsters in SA is a breath of fresh air, sharing:

“Nothing better [than] going to a South African school and every child greeting you with ‘Sir’. Respect for older people should be baked in to a society.”

However, there were some who disagreed; spotlighting the matter of disrespect being generational, not cultural. There were also those who said the responsibility is on the adults, who are disrespecting others, to say something.

What are your thoughts? Let us know in the comments!

The internet is dancing again… and this time, a Polish dancer with South African soul is stealing the spotlight.

Global (24 March 2025) – A new online dance trend has taken the internet by storm, and it’s bringing with it a wave of joy, rhythm and unexpected global connection. All set to the powerful intro of Beyoncé’s 2011 hit “End of Time”.

Originally sparked by Beyoncé’s choreographed routine that dancers across the world began replicating, the trend has since evolved. Countries are now adding their own flavour, flair and culture to the mix. And while you might expect South Africans to jump on this one with their signature style and unmatched groove, something curious has happened.

Oliwia Ratynska, an Afro dancer from Warsaw, Poland, is making serious waves online… and waving the South African flag while she’s at it.

@oliwiaratyska @Beyoncé it’s time for choreographer from 🇿🇦 / DC: me Idea: @Protais #fyp #viral #sa #amapiano ♬ son original – estheeer

Oliwia, who previously featured on Poland’s version of “Got Talent”, recently posted a high-energy video alongside four other dancers — and it’s giving full-on local “groova vibes”. From the movement to the expressions to the sheer rhythm, the performance feels like home. So much so, that many people in the comments thought the crew were South African.

“No 🧬 just 🇿🇦

“As a country we are very very proud of you ❤👏🏼🇿🇦

The video, which dropped just two days ago (and racked up almost 2 million views), has been met with a flurry of praise. Not only for its technical precision and brilliant choreography but for the joy it brings. That kind of joy that has you watching it over and over, grinning like you just bumped into an old friend on the street.

“Beginning of the video I was ready to type ‘ningaphinde yezwa’ I’m sorry I judged you guys too early. This is awesome, Beyoncé choreographer was found shaking.”

“I know I’m not the only one who watched this a couple of times with a huge smile on my face ❤❤❤💃💃🥰😍🔥🔥🙂

“THE BEST one I’ve seen so far.”

“Killed it, Beyoncé can learn a thing or two.”

Whether it’s the rhythm, the moves, or the unmistakable energy, something about this performance just feels proudly South African. And that’s exactly what people are loving.

Oliwia and her crew may be dancing thousands of kilometres away, but the spirit they’re moving with? That’s homegrown. It’s joyful. It’s powerful. And it’s proof that our influence, our style, and our vibe continue to ripple far beyond our borders.

Turns out, you don’t have to be South African to move like one… but when you do it this well, we’ll gladly claim you.
