One of the must-see gardens in the world is right here in South Africa according to the New York Times’ panel of horticultural experts!

Global (15 May 2025) — Recently, The New York Times put horticultural experts to task to compile a list of must-see gardens from around the world, and a South African favourite made the cut!

The New York Times Style Magazine team were curious to learn which gardens were worth flying across the world for. With a panel of six renowned and experienced horticultural experts to lean on (including Royal Horticultural Society gold medalist Juliet Sargeant and architecture professor at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design, Toshiko Mori) the curation of the ’25 Gardens You Must See’ list came to be, and bucket lists everywhere have taken inspiration since.

The panelists nominated 10 must-see gardens each before the final list was built. Importantly, the gardens have not been displayed in a kind of ranking order.

Excitingly for South Africa, it was the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden that nestled into the list beautifully. A space rich with natural heritage, historic moments and views that’ll make you wonder whether you haven’t accidentally teleported to a time long before mankind interfered with nature, if you haven’t already gone exploring at Kirstenbosch, this is certainly your sign to do so.

Per the New York Times:

“While native gardening has only recently become mainstream in the United States, the concept is nothing new in South Africa. Case in point: this botanical garden in the Western Cape province, the first of its kind in the world dedicated entirely to indigenous flora, which was established over a century ago in 1913. Located eight miles outside the city center and set against the backdrop of Table Mountain’s eastern slope, the 1,305-acre public space showcases more than 7,000 species, with high priority given to the singular fynbos biome, which is found almost exclusively in the country’s Western Cape region and includes stiff, structured proteas, shaggy, flowering ericas and tufted, reedlike plants called restios.

There’s also a robust collection of spiky cycads, a type of seed plant some believe predates the dinosaurs, and visitors might also spot local fauna, including brilliantly colored sunbirds — which resemble hummingbirds — owls and wildcats. The Tree Canopy Walkway, a curved, steel-and-timber treetop bridge inspired by a snake’s skeleton, winds 65 feet above it all, offering mountain vistas and sweeping forest views.”

Other gardens on the list include Australia’s Royal Botanic Garden Sydney, the Saihoji Kokedera Temple and Moss Gardenin Kyoto, Japan, Giardino di Ninfa in Cisterna di Latina, Italy and the Classical Gardens of Suzhou, in China to name a few.

You can find the full list, here.

South Africa has just been ranked one of the best places in the world for British expats… and that’s not only good for them, it’s great for us too.

Global (15 May 2025) – Yes, our headlines are often filled with chaos. Loadshedding, politics, potholes and people leaving. But every now and then, something happens that reminds us just how special South Africa really is… and that maybe, just maybe, we don’t always see it because we’re living in it.

This is one of those times. And honestly, we are here for it.

South Africa has just been named one of the top three countries for British expats to move to in 2025, and that’s not only a proud moment… it’s a powerful one. It’s a reminder that despite everything, the world still sees the beauty and magic in our country.

The list, released by British relocation experts U.K.ABROAD, highlights what we already know in our bones: this place is pure gold. From the sunshine and scenery to the lower cost of living (for someone coming with Pounds) and our incredible quality of life, South Africa is drawing people in.

The World Sees What We Sometimes Forget

With more than 5.5 million British citizens currently living outside of the UK, South Africa has quietly become one of their favourite spots to start over. And that’s not small news. That’s massive. The list puts us in the same league as places like Australia, New Zealand and Canada. But unlike those countries, South Africa isn’t just another expat destination; it’s got a soul.

According to the study, some of the reasons why include the fact that English is widely spoken, our warm weather and the ability to live here visa-free for up to 90 days are major drawcards. Add to that the sunshine (over 2,500 hours a year!), the affordability and our laid-back lifestyle… and suddenly it makes sense why thousands of Brits are choosing to move here every year.

And with around 200,000 Brits already living in South Africa, this isn’t a new trend, it’s one that’s growing.

Why This is Good News for South Africa

When expats choose to live, work, and even retire here, they’re not just sipping wine in Franschhoek or surfing in Jeffreys Bay. They’re investing. They’re creating jobs. They’re contributing to our local economy. They’re enrolling their kids in our schools, shopping in our stores, hiring local teams and sharing their love for SA with the rest of the world.

And when more people see South Africa as a great place to live? Tourism rises. International confidence increases. Local communities benefit. The more we’re seen for our potential. And the more we grow.

It’s also a much-needed reminder (to us South Africans) that what we have is worth celebrating.

We often look at other countries and think the grass is greener. But people are literally moving here for the exact reasons we sometimes overlook: the lifestyle, the views, the energy, the diversity, the people.

From Penguins to Pinotage… It’s All Right Here

A retiree from Manchester now spends mornings walking along the cliffs of Hermanus, watching whales breach in the bay. A couple from London has opened a guesthouse in Stellenbosch, serving local Pinotage to guests as the sun sets in shades of blush and gold. A young family from Birmingham is raising their children in Durban North, where schooldays include learning Zulu and afternoons are spent barefoot in the garden.

This isn’t a dream. It’s already happening.

From the penguins of Boulders Beach to the cliffs of the Drakensberg and even the electric buzz of Johannesburg, South Africa offers a kind of magic that simply can’t be found anywhere else. And the world is finally starting to notice.

The financial perks are just as attractive. According to William Russell, the cost of living here is roughly 65% lower than in the UK, giving British expats the chance to stretch their pensions further, build a better life, and in doing so, contribute positively to our communities too.

We’re More Than Our Headlines

Yes, South Africa has challenges. We all know it. But we also know how to make the most of every single day. We know how to dance in the rain and braai during loadshedding. We know how to show up for one another and how to find joy in the chaos.

And now the rest of the world is starting to see that too.

“I wake up every morning to blue skies and Table Mountain, it still feels like a dream,” said one British expat now living in Cape Town.

We’re glad you feel that way. We do too.

So, if you needed a sign today that South Africa still holds immense potential, this is it. When people from around the globe choose to pack up their lives and start fresh here, it says a lot about what we have and what we offer.

It’s not just about expats choosing South Africa… it’s about the world choosing us. Again.

And that is a very good thing.

Mary Hoaeane from Khayelitsha is one of many “gogos” feeling the benefit of her work featuring South Africa’s leading travel hubs.

South Africa (29 April 2025) – In the evolving landscape of global travel, transit hubs have transformed from mere waypoints to powerful engines of economic growth and community development. These bustling centres serve as crucial platforms for job creation, innovation incubation, and cultural exchange, making them vital to the communities they serve. As travel infrastructure adapts to meet modern expectations of convenience and experience, the impact of these hubs extends far beyond travel facilitation.

At Relate Bracelets, we’ve seen firsthand how places of transit – especially airports – can be more than just gateways to new destinations. They can be powerful agents of change. Through thoughtful partnerships and people-first initiatives, travel hubs have the potential to create dignity through work, spark entrepreneurship, and connect local communities with the world in meaningful ways.

Across South Africa, transit hubs like O.R. Tambo and Cape Town International Airports are transforming into more than just places to catch a flight. They’re evolving into vibrant economic ecosystems that breathe life into surrounding communities. Every plane that lands or lifts off helps generate employment; from hospitality and logistics to security, retail, cleaning, and maintenance – creating ripple effects that sustain thousands of households. For many, especially in previously underserved communities, these opportunities can be life-changing.

Where movement sparks meaning

But the impact goes deeper than numbers or job titles. Transit hubs are melting pots of people, ideas, and cultures. With this constant convergence comes the chance to reimagine how we connect, not just through travel, but through shared experiences and values. When travel intersects with local enterprise and social purpose, something special happens: innovation takes root in very human ways.

We’ve had the privilege of seeing this meaningful connection come to life through Relate Bracelets’ ongoing partnership with retailers at Cape Town International Airport and O.R. Tambo International Airport. This collaboration has created a unique platform to share our purpose-driven products with a global audience, offering travellers an opportunity to engage with authentic, handmade beadwork while directly supporting local artisans and the communities they belong to. This partnership has enabled us to introduce our handmade beaded bracelets, lovingly crafted by gogos (grandmothers), youth, and other community members, to a global audience. Each bracelet sold is more than just a beautiful keepsake; it carries the fingerprint of a real person, a story of resilience, and the shared dream of a better future.

One of those stories belongs to Mary Hoaeane from Khayelitsha. After the uncertainty brought on by COVID-19, Mary joined the non-profit Ikamva Labantu and began crafting bracelets for Relate. For Mary, the work became a lifeline, not just financially but emotionally. It gave her a renewed sense of purpose, a supportive community, and a daily reason to smile. “We uplift one another,” she says, describing the bond between the women she works with every day. Her story is a moving reminder that meaningful work can offer more than income; it can offer dignity, joy, and a renewed sense of belonging.

What makes stories like Mary’s even more powerful is that they’re shared with travellers who often seek more than just souvenirs. Modern travellers crave authenticity. They want to engage with local culture, support meaningful causes, and return home with something that tells a deeper story. Our bracelets offer them that; a tangible piece of South Africa, woven with care, heritage, and hope.

Collaboration as the catalyst

Of course, none of this happens in a vacuum. The full potential of travel hubs can only be unlocked through collaboration. When businesses, government, non-profits, and communities come together with a shared purpose, airports and other transit spaces become more than infrastructure; they become engines for transformation. Whether it’s by prioritising local hiring, supporting small businesses, offering skills training, or creating retail spaces that reflect the country’s diversity, there are endless ways to design transit spaces that uplift the people who live around them.

Successful partnerships recognise and leverage the complementary strengths of different stakeholders. Transit operators bring infrastructure and traveller flows, businesses provide commercial expertise and capital, government agencies contribute policy support and coordination, and community organisations offer local knowledge and workforce connections. Together, these partners can create integrated development approaches that maximise community benefit.

Collaborations deliver multiple benefits simultaneously. Travellers gain access to authentic products and experiences that reflect local identity. Community members secure meaningful employment and income-generation opportunities. Businesses establish differentiated offerings that appeal to experience-seeking travellers. And transit hubs strengthen their position as valued community assets rather than isolated infrastructure.

Moving South Africa forward

We believe in putting people and purpose at the centre of everything we do. And we believe transit hubs have the power to do the same. These spaces can become places of inclusion, pride, and empowerment, not only facilitating movement but stimulating connection, opportunity, and growth.

Airports – and the communities within and around them – rely on purpose-driven retailers to connect with “transumers” seeking more than just convenience. Through initiatives that champion conscious consumption, they offer products with soul, authenticity, and impact, creating meaningful moments for both local and international travellers passing through their terminals. Because the best journeys don’t just take us places – they bring us closer to purpose.

We know many South Africans are very excited to hit the road and make a getaway for the upcoming Easter weekend, but before you go, here are some safety tips to follow so you and the family stay safe on the roads.

South Africa (16 April 2025) – A family road trip is one of the best ways to explore the beauty and diversity of South Africa. From coastal drives to scenic mountain routes, the journey can be just as memorable as the destination. However, ensuring your vehicle is road-ready is crucial for a safe and enjoyable experience, especially considering the condition of some South African roads, where potholes and long stretches of remote terrain are common.

Second to the condition of the roads being terribly poor is the high number of road accidents occurring over the Easter weekend. It happens every year, and we just want every road user to get to their destination safely.

Here are key steps families should take before hitting the road this Easter Weekend.

1. Check Your Tyres Thoroughly

Tyres are your vehicle’s first line of defence. Before setting off, inspect all tyres—including the spare—for wear and tear. Ensure tread depth meets legal safety standards (at least 1.6mm, though 3mm is preferable for long trips), and that tyres are correctly inflated according to your vehicle’s manual. Uneven wear might indicate misalignment or suspension issues, which should be addressed before travel.

2. Check Your Oil and Water

Even if your vehicle isn’t due for a service, a minor check-up can make all the difference. Have a trusted mechanic inspect vital components such as oil levels, brake pads, wiper blades, battery health, lights, and coolant.

Top up fluids and replace any worn-out parts to reduce the risk of roadside breakdowns. A quick service now can save you hours of inconvenience later, especially over the Easter Weekend when most auto-shops are likely to be closed.

3. Watch Out for Potholes

South Africa’s roads can be unpredictable, with potholes being a frequent hazard, particularly in rural areas and after heavy rains (although the same is now true for most urban areas too…).

Stay vigilant, especially on lesser-maintained routes or roads you are not familiar with. Stick to the speed limit, increase your following distance, and drive with dipped headlights in low visibility conditions.

If a pothole is unavoidable, avoid sudden braking and try to drive straight over it at a reduced speed to minimise damage.

Good luck!

4. Pack Smart and Stay Connected

Pack a basic emergency kit including a first aid box, jumper cables, a flashlight, and a tyre repair kit. Load maps or download offline navigation apps in case of poor cell reception. Make sure mobile phones are charged, and carry a power bank or car charger.

Also, keep some drinking water and filling snacks in the car, just in case you are stopped for a prolonged period of time and need to stay hydrated.

5. Plan Rest Stops and Entertainment

Long drives can be tiring for both adults and children. Plan rest stops every two to three hours and keep snacks, water, and activities for children within reach to keep the journey smooth.

Fun Games to Play While Driving

  • License Plate Game – Try to spot plates from all the provinces in South Africa and neighbouring countries.
  • I Spy – Classic game where someone says “I spy with my little eye, something…” and others guess.
  • Name That Tune – Play music and try to guess the song as fast as possible.
  • Car Bingo – This one takes a little bit of planning, but is a fun way to keep the family engaged and looking out for fun things on the roadside (hello, herd of cows – these always make the whole family smile!) – Just Google and you will find a load of free printables to use.

By taking these simple yet effective steps, your family can enjoy a safer, more relaxed adventure on South African roads. Happy travels, and stay safe!

Rio Carnival Queen of the Drums, Erika Januza, recently brought her magic to the Mother City by performing at the ever-iconic Cape Town Carnival. Returning the favour, Cape Town shared bouts of its own magic with the star who raved about her experiences to the world (or at least, her millions of fans).

Cape Town, South Africa (14 April 2025) — Big energy, glam, dance and drums. These are just some of the things that Erika Januza is known for as the Rio Carnival Queen of the Drums.

Fresh off her winning performance at the Rio Carnival 2024, Queen Erika embarked all the way from the tropics of South America to Cape Town, where she’d not only get to play tourist, but also perform at our Cape Town Carnival.

This year’s Cape Town Carnival was even more special than usual, as it celebrated 15 years. From the Stormers joining the festivities to the ever-thrilling floats and performers, having Erika share her magic with Capetonians was yet another cherry atop the cake.

For the Rio Carnival Queen of the Drums, the Cape Town carnival was “a dream to experience” (no small compliment when you consider Rio’s reputation for some of the world’s most iconic carnivals).

And, just as Erika brought that extra dose of magic to the Mother City, the Mother City returned the favour by giving Erika a fabulous trip through the City.

Erika visited all parts of Cape Town during her stay, including the heights of Table Mountain, the African Penguins down at Boulders (to which Erika humorously pondered what penguins were doing in the sunshine) and a colourful trip to Bo-Kaap.

But it wasn’t all tourist stops for the star. Erika also enjoyed time living like locals like visiting a salon before the parade.

As she explains, getting her braids done wasn’t just about hair. Rather, its a symbolic experience that she entrusted to local braiders.

“[The braids are] about who we were, are and can be… Kings and queens, our braids are a sign of strength, power, resistance…”

These experiences were shared with millions of her fans (4 million on Instagram alone), in what was a heartwarming cultural exchange.

“I brought the energy of Cape Town to Rio de Janeiro with me, a piece of my ancestry and our history,” Erika added.

A model and actress, the Queen of the Drums is also making history by playing the first Black Brazilian witch in Disney’s history thanks to her role in the series ‘A Magia de Aruna’.

South Africa is about to welcome its first-ever Club Med. And it’s not just a holiday destination, it’s a bold celebration of culture, community and coastal magic that’s set to transform tourism forever.

KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (11 April 2025) – The Good Things Guy team has just had a sneak peek at something that’s going to change the local travel game forever… and we’re very excited.

Nestled along the unspoilt coastline of KwaZulu-Natal’s North Coast, Club Med Tinley is shaping up to be one of the most exciting hospitality developments our country has seen in decades. Scheduled to open in July 2026, this isn’t just a resort, it’s a bold celebration of South African culture, a game-changer for tourism and a massive boost for the economy.

And honestly? It’s giving us all the holiday feels already.

Club Med Tinley is set to be the largest hospitality development in South Africa in over thirty years and it’s bringing a wave of opportunity with it. The resort is expected to create over 800 direct jobs, 1,500 indirect jobs, and employ 1,200 local construction workers during its build. That’s not just progress; it’s empowerment. Families will be uplifted, local businesses supported, and the tourism sector revitalised.

“Club Med Tinley represents a great step forward in the hospitality industry, serving as one of the larger hospitality projects in South Africa,” the team shared.

Designed With Heart and Soul

More than just a luxury destination, Club Med Tinley is being designed to reflect the soul of South Africa. The collaboration between South African firms Craft of Architecture and Mobius, alongside French design studio Studio Marc Hertrich & Nicolas Adnet, is producing something truly unique.

Zulu artistry and traditions are seamlessly woven into every corner from bold beadwork patterns on the façades to colourful, handwoven textiles in the interiors. Even the public spaces have been curated with local art and craftsmanship, offering guests a deep, immersive experience that honours heritage while embracing a global standard.

And then there’s the beach culture. Think: surf at sunrise, bonfires at sunset, wide-open terraces and coastal calm. It’s Durban meets design chic, and it’s stunning.

The 32-hectare site was once a sugarcane plantation, now being thoughtfully transformed into a sanctuary that celebrates nature, not replaces it. Flanked by estuaries, wetlands and dune forests, the entire project is being developed with sustainability front and centre.

Floating roofs for natural airflow, solar panels, water-saving systems, and indigenous landscaping are just a few of the eco-conscious features. In fact, the resort is gunning for a Green Star 4 rating from the Green Building Council of South Africa… a bold move that proves luxury and sustainability can absolutely go hand in hand.

It’s Not Just a Resort. It’s a Movement.

Club Med Tinley is also deeply invested in its people. Through partnerships with the Nukakamma School, over 110 young South Africans from Ballito townships are already being trained in hospitality, with many gaining experience at other Club Med resorts globally before returning home to run their own.

By the time the resort opens, at least 220 locals will be fully trained and employed. This is a real, lasting impact for the community. And the construction phase alone is already changing lives, with over 1,200 workers sourced mostly from within 10km of the site.

Cape Town, you biscuit, you’ve done it again. The Mother City has been named one of the 50 Best Food Cities in the World, sharing the list with other foodies heavyweights like Tokyo and Naples.

Global (02 April 2025) — Cape Town is sitting proudly on several ‘world best’ lists this year already. And, thanks to another global ranking, the Mother City has added yet another achievement to its full plate; this time for a ranking based on something foodies will appreciate to no small degree.

The 50 Best Food Cities in the World list has been created to let people know which cities to visit if you consider the most important element of a trip to be food.

The list’s ranking is based on Big 7 Travel’s audience and readership (which spans over 1 million food lovers) who were asked to share their favourite foodie cities. To no one’s surprise, Cape Town made the cut to share the foodie’s royal table with other heavyweights like Tokyo and Naples.

According to the write-up, “Cape Town is a must-visit destination for any serious foodie.” It goes on to describe much of the food as “political’ and spotlights some South African favourites (like the braai), but also dishes specific to the Cape, like Cape Malay cuisine.

As for recommendations, Bunny Chow, Bobotie, and the Gatsby were all emphasised!

“A bubbling, delicious melting pot of cultures and cuisines, Cape Town is a must-visit destination for any serious foodie. Braai is one of the first dishes that comes to mind – it’s barbecue at the next level, with ultra-high quality cuts of meat grilled over charcoal. It’s also a symbol of unity, community, and resistance against the apartheid. Much of Cape Town’s food is political, whether that’s due to colonial history, the slave trade, or apartheid. Cape Malay cuisine is an example of that – a combination of South African, Indonesian, and Malaysian flavours. Rich, deep curries are seasoned with vibrant spices and ingredients, such as cardamom, ginger, and chilli.” – Big 7 Travel

You can check out the full list of 50 here, and let us know which Cape Town-unique dish is your favourite in the comments.

I thought Club Med was just for families… until I went. It’s an all-inclusive escape for couples, friends, and solo travellers too. And with their latest Season Opening Sale, now’s the time to book!

Johannesburg, South Africa (10 March 2025) – When you think of Club Med, what comes to mind? If you’re like I used to be, you probably picture a family holiday destination filled with kids running around, parents juggling schedules and activities catered to little ones. And while that’s true… Club Med is absolutely fantastic for families but it’s also so much more.

I’ll be honest: before I actually visited a Club Med resort, I didn’t fully get it. I assumed it wasn’t for me. But wow, was I wrong!

You see, Club Med isn’t just for families. In fact, it might be one of the most underrated holiday spots for couples and solo travellers. Every “Sun Holiday” Club Med offers includes adults-only areas known as ZEN zones and they are anything but your traditional quiet retreat.

The Club Med Experience

Let me start by saying that this is not a sponsored post. I am sharing this because I genuinely thought Club Med was only for families, and I don’t want you to make the same mistake. Also, they just sent me an email offering a discount, and I thought, why not share the good news?

I’ve now been lucky enough to visit Club Med’s resorts in Mauritius (both of them!), Seychelles, and Bali, and let me tell you, each one has blown me away in different ways.

Take Club Med Seychelles, for example. Their ZEN area isn’t just a peaceful corner. It’s an entire experience. It has a private beach, a stunning infinity pool, a vibey bar and a restaurant where you can sip cocktails while the sun dips below the horizon. The music is pumping, the drinks are flowing and the atmosphere is electric. It’s a paradise within a paradise.

And at Club Med Bali, they’ve taken it up a notch with an entire nightclub! Yes, a full-on club inside the resort, where you can dance the night away, meet new people and make memories that last far beyond your holiday tan.

Even Mauritius, known for being a family-friendly destination, has two incredible Club Med resorts – La Pointe aux Canonniers and Albion – each offering its own unique take on relaxation and adventure. From sipping cocktails at an overwater bar to paddleboarding in crystal-clear waters, the options are endless.

All-Inclusive = Zero Worries

One of the best things about Club Med is that it’s all-inclusive, meaning you pay one price and get everything – no hidden surprises.

From unlimited drinks (yes, even the cocktails) to endless food options, whether it’s gourmet buffets or à la carte dining, you’ll never go hungry. The resorts are packed with activities to keep you entertained for days… think sailing, snorkelling, paddleboarding, yoga or even flying trapeze (yes, really!). And while there are optional excursions available at an extra cost, the truth is, you don’t even need them. With so much happening inside the resort, you might never want to leave.

The Best Time to Book? Right Now!

If you’ve ever considered a Club Med escape, now is the time to start planning. They’ve just announced their Season Opening Sale for 2025 and 2026 Sun Holidays, with up to 20% off!

From 25th to 28th March 2025, you can lock in your trip with an incredible deal, including:

  • Priority booking on dates, rooms, and kids’ clubs at your favourite resorts.
  • Up to 20% off Deluxe rooms, Suites, Villas, and Chalet-Apartments.
  • Up to 15% off all other room categories in select resorts.
  • A low deposit of just R3,000 per person to secure your accommodation and exchange rate.

It’s the kind of sale that makes booking a dream getaway an absolute no-brainer. Click here for more information.

If you’ve ever dismissed Club Med as just a family-friendly resort, it’s time to rethink that. Whether you’re planning a romantic getaway, a trip with friends, or even a solo escape, Club Med knows how to do holidays right. And with this sale, there’s never been a better time to discover it for yourself.

The 21st of February is International Tourist Guide Day, and CapeNature celebrated all the cultural and historical storytellers who travel South Africa and guide others through our history.

South Africa (25 February 2025) – A good tourist guide should be knowledgeable, articulate, and vibrant and leave their guests hungry for more insight into the incredible attraction they have just visited. In celebration of the invaluable role played by professional tourist guides, CapeNature, in collaboration with the Western Cape Department of Economic Development and Tourism, hosted an interactive event at Walker Bay Nature Reserve to mark International Tourist Guide Day.

Globally, 21 February is recognised as International Tourist Guide Day, and it is observed to pay tribute to the expertise and dedication of tourist guides in shaping and enriching travel experiences for international and local travellers alike.

This year’s event, themed “Celebrating Guides, Exploring Heritage,” offered an immersive educational experience, showcasing the history, culture, and traditions of the region. Tour guides in attendance at the event were given the chance to experience the warm hospitality they often afford their guests and were treated a unique tour of Walker Bay renowned for its dramatic landscapes, diverse ecosystems, and rich archaeological significance.

The highlight of the tour was the Klipgat Cave experience, which offers a glimpse into human history dating back over 70,000 years and is one of the most remarkable examples of early human dwellings in South Africa.

Established by the World Federation of Tourist Guide Associations (WFTGA) in 1990, ITGD is now commemorated in over 70 countries, underscoring the worldwide recognition of tourist guides as key pillars of the tourism industry.

The role of tourist guides is pivotal in connecting visitors with authentic experiences that highlight the depth and richness of South Africa’s cultural and natural assets. Since South Africa’s first ITGD celebration in 2009, significant strides have been made in raising awareness about the critical contributions of guides within the tourism value chain.

Department of Economic Development and Tourism Deputy Director-General: Economic Operations, Rashid Toefy said,

“Tourist guides are at the heart of our tourism industry, ensuring that visitors have memorable and meaningful experiences. Their knowledge and passion help showcase the very best of the Western Cape. This day is an excellent way to acknowledge their hard work and the essential role they play in driving our tourism economy.”

CapeNature CEO Dr Ashley Naidoo said tourist guides are advocates for the Western Cape’s Cape Floristic Region,

“Tourist guides bridge the gap between visitors and the environments they visit. They are the storytellers who bring history, culture, and conservation to life. Today, we thank them for their dedication and celebrate their invaluable contribution to telling our community stories.”

CapeNature and the Department of Economic Development and Tourism were delighted to host an in-person event in 2025 following the success of an online awareness campaign and competition last year.

The Walker Bay event helped to reinforce a commitment to knowledge exchange and professional growth within the sector. This year’s event served as a platform for guides to share insights, exchange expertise, and engage with industry leaders.

Tourist guides are encouraged to learn more about CapeNature’s Travel Trade Programme and sign up with the entity here: https://www.capenature.co.za/travel-trade-programme.

There are thousands of ways to have an adventure in South Africa; we gathered the Good Things Guy team to list all our favourites.

South Africa (10 February 2025) – Our wish for you this year is to fill your life with every adventure you can dream up. So, we gathered the team and had everyone share some of their must-see destinations and must-do activities. Is it a bucket list? It can be that you aim to do and see all these things, or you can just use it as inspiration for your own travels and adventures.

We got the whole Good Things Guy team to share some of their favourite things to in South Africa. Each person shared what they love to do most, what is still on their to-do lists plus some must-see sights from their hometowns.

Nothando Mthembu, our journalist based in KwaZulu-Natal, shared that hot air ballooning is a big one on her travel bucket list; her family-friendly recommendation is afternoons spent at Shongweni Farmer’s Market. For those looking for spectacular outdoor activities, Nothando says that Giba Gorge is a must!

“The gorge is a natural valley carved by the Giba River, with steep rocky cliffs and natural grassland slopes. There are also hiking trails and zip-lining activities available.”

Brent Lindeque, our founder, has travelled South Africa extensively and had an incredible list, including drinks at the Lighthouse Bar at the Oyster Box, bungee jumping at the Orlando Towers and a trip to Sun City Resort. We asked him which was his favourite of all time but he said he simply couldn’t pick one spot as there are so many good gems in South Africa.

Our Cape Town-based journalist Ashleigh Nefdt has the benefit of exploring the Mother City and beyond. She shares that a day spent at the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens is always a win, including “the Boomslang Canopy Trail, which is a must!” Ashleigh adds that one should stay for the evening when the travelling Open Air Cinema comes to the gardens. Or you can go kayaking in Simon’e Town to watch the penguins hunting for their supper.

Tayla Castle, Brent’s assistant and right-hand gal shared that her must-see spots in Gauteng, including visiting her local escape room, The Gr8 Escape or getting crafty at one of the local Clay Cafe’s. Tayla is all about diving into creative, quirky adventures you wouldn’t typically think of because why settle for ordinary when life’s all about epic experiences and unforgettable memories? She’s all in for ticking off those “bucket list” moments that make your day feel like an adventure.

Lastly, Tyler Leigh Vivier, our safari-obsessed editor is down for all things Kruger National Park. If you are heading park side, she highly recommends a stay at Shingwedzi where you will get to see an array of wildlife without the notorious “traffic” that affects the parks during holiday seasons. This route also let’s you cross the Tropic of Capricorn where you can get out of your car and stand on it (just watch out for sleeping lions!).

So, with those recommendations in mind, let’s give you 100 things to do in SA. In no particular order, here we go…
