Today is World Menstrual Hygiene Day, and to honour the movement, media personality and devoted father of three girls, TT Mbha, is visiting Johannesburg schools in bright pink overalls, leveraging his platform to bring dignity to underprivileged schoolgirls.

Johannesburg, South Africa (28 May 2025) – We’ve shared many stories about the incredible humans and heroes championing a world where period poverty is but a distant memory in our country.

Today, in commemoration of World Menstrual Hygiene Day, we share the touching efforts of media personality, entrepreneur and father of three girls, TT Mbha, who has used his connections to distribute sanitary pads to underprivileged school girls.

In a video he posted earlier today, he is seen sporting bright pink overalls and pink sneakers as he dances happily before the camera and is soon joined by two of his daughters whom he shares what he’ll be getting up to.

As part of the massive global movement to address period poverty and foster a period-friendly world, TT will be playing his part by repainting girls’ restrooms and donating 1,500 sanitary packs to underprivileged Grade 4 to 12 girls at JS Mpanza Primary School in Diepkloof and Emshukantambo Secondary School in Pimville.

TT also added that this was also a call to girl dads to talk to their daughters about periods and menstruation from as early as the age of seven.

His post and efforts received love online as social media users commended how TT was going above and beyond to address a prevalent issue in many communities and helping restore the confidence and dignity of many young girls who often have nowhere to turn to when “that time of the month” comes.

We don’t need superpowers to make the world a better place. Kind hearts and acts of pure compassion can make the real impact our society so desperately needs.

Thanks for demonstrating this so well, TT. Know that your efforts are supported and appreciated!

Jenna Clifford, an inspiring businesswoman, designer and beloved local icon has passed away, taking with her, her sparkle, but leaving behind a decades long legacy that will shine on.

Johannesburg, South Africa (21 May 2025) – Late last year, we had the pleasure of meeting Jenna Clifford, when she was honoured as a local and lekker participant in the ‘My Barbie Story’ book. The iconic designer wasted no time in sharing her own story and with it, left us in awe of her cander and fearless personality.

Jenna made no secret that her life started rougher than most, but she fearless forged her way forward and became one of the country’s most beloved jewellery designers. Rubbing shoulders with global diplomates, local sports stars and even our very-own Nelson Mandela; Jenna had a way of connecting with everyone.

Her journey into design started in the 1980s, but through her dedication and passion, officially launched the brand of Jenna Clifford Designs in 1992. She has been a stalwart of the industry ever-since.

Beyond her defining career with beautiful jewels, Jenna was a fierce advocate for women’s rights and equality. This was the Jenna we met and grew to admire; outspoken and encouraging women to claim their space. In 2008, she was honoured as the South African ambassador and torchbearer for the United Nations Millennium Development Goal 3: Call to Action Global Campaign, a defining moment in her advocacy for women’s rights.

Philanthropy has always been a part of Jenna’s ethos. “I took up the torch, and I make changes where I can”. From working to fight breast cancer, supporting non-profits, running mentoring programmes and more, helping create awareness for the causes closest to her heart was a big part of her life.

She has helped raise funds as a tribute to all the South African women who have overcome challenges and gone on to inspire others.

While the walls of her studio were lined with images of the whose-who of the world, it was the family photos scattered between those larger than life images that spoke the loudest. It was clear her family was the thing that made her feel most proud.

In a statement shared by her beloved daughters, who gave thanks to all the kindness, love and support sent to the family during the short but fierce cancer battle, they reiterated what we got to learn in a short space of time; that Jenna Clifford was more than a designer, she valued kindness and care above all. She nurtured the spirit of Ubuntu and unearthed the beauty in others.

“Our mom was an icon, mentor, friend and hero to so many. To hear and read your stories — to see our mom through your eyes—has been incredibly moving and truly comforting. She touched so many lives with her kindness, her unstinting generosity of spirit, and her steadfast belief in the transformative and redeeming power of love.

Mom cared deeply for others, poured love into countless lives and lived a life of self-sacrifice. Her character was magnetic, she was inspiring and she believed passionately in supporting others to realise their inherent potential. Her passionate belief in others encouraged so many to elevate their ambitions and dream bigger. She was at her happiest when she was supporting others to achieve their dreams.

Mom’s greatest legacy is one of joyful giving. She was deeply generous with her time, her inspired ideas and her love. She always gave happily, freely and without hesitation.”

Jenna passed away peacefully on the 20th of May 2025, surrounded by her nearest and dearest. Rest beautifully, Jenna.

The rugby world mourns the passing of beloved legend Cornal Hendricks, who tragically passed last week. Among the many heartfelt tributes, self-taught artist Ricollin Moodley, known as Ricollinart, created a breathtaking portrait of Hendricks using only lipstick.

Wellington, South Africa (20 May 2025) – Our nation lost one of its talented and well-loved rugby legends, Cornal Hendricks, last week from what is believed to have been a heart attack.

According to SuperSport, Hendricks, who was diagnosed with the heart condition late in 2015 and missed several years of rugby because no team would take the risk of playing him with the condition, was finally given the chance to return to the rugby field for the Vodacom Bulls in 2019.

More than just a rugby star, Hendricks has had a great impact in Western Cape communities through the Cornal Hendricks Foundation, which is rooted in strengthening communities by encouraging, empowering and enabling young people to become the best they can through its programmes.

Many have paid tribute to the fallen rugby legend, and among them was talented South African self-taught artist, Ricollin Moodley, widely known as Ricollinart on his social platforms.

Known for his creative and unconventional art mediums, Ricollinart captured a video of himself breathing life onto canvas as he crafted a most beautiful portrait of the former Springboks wing, made entirely with different shades and hues of lipstick.

In the clip, each skillfully drawn line, stroke, shade, and colour-fill impressively captures the striking resemblance of Hendricks and the essence of life that has won over hearts, gave his all on the rugby field, earned 115 caps and scored 34 tries across all competitions.

“Tribute to rugby legend Cornal Hendricks. Rest in peace, legend,” Ricollinart said in his Instagram post.

As Hendricks is laid to rest this Sunday, we extend our deepest sympathies to all who knew and were inspired by this remarkable athlete.

Thuso Mbedu has gone from breakout star in Mzansi to one of the most exciting names in Hollywood and her journey is only just getting started.

Globe (18 May 2025) – From the quiet streets of Pietermaritzburg to the dazzling lights of Hollywood, Thuso Mbedu story is nothing short of inspirational.

Now, the Emmy-nominated and award-winning actress is gearing up for her next big adventure, starring as Aleah in HBO’s upcoming crime drama series Task. She’ll be acting alongside a powerhouse cast: Mark Ruffalo, Emilia Jones, Tom Pelphrey and Silvia Dionicio. As news of her new role breaks, fans and media back home have erupted with joy, declaring themselves “proudly South African” and celebrating every step of her success.

Mbedu’s rise has been extraordinary. Raised by her grandmother in Pietermaritzburg after losing both parents at a young age, she dreamed of telling stories on stage and screen. After earning her acting diploma at Wits University, she broke into South African television and quickly became a household name. But her true breakthrough came in 2021 when she was cast as Cora in Barry Jenkins’s The Underground Railroad. In doing so, Mbedu made history as the first South African to lead an American television series. Her fearless performance as an enslaved woman seeking freedom earned her rave reviews and multiple awards, including an Independent Spirit Award and Gotham Award for Best Actress. It was a moment of collective pride for South Africa, with local media praising her as someone “taking the world by storm with her bubbly personality and thespian excellence,” showcasing to the world the talent emerging from Mzansi.

The love and support from home has been overwhelming. When Mbedu promoted The Underground Railroad, she was moved to tears by fans’ reactions.

Taking to Instagram to thank her countrymen, she wrote: “My fellow South Africans! Y’all showed up and showed off with the love. Thank you, thank you, thank you guys… Thank you, I love you SA.”

Social media quickly filled with messages of admiration. One fan commented, “From the day I saw you… I knew you would go far.” Another wrote, “We love you Queen Thuso… Upwards and onwards… Thank you for making us proud!”

Local press marvelled at Mbedu’s humility and celebrated her as a South African trailblazer, even headlining that “Mzansi [is] brimming with pride” over her international success.

Her next milestone was equally stirring. In 2022, Mbedu made her big-screen debut as Nawi in The Woman King, a historical epic about the Dahomey Amazons, starring Viola Davis. Filming partly in South Africa, The Woman King brought global attention to the region’s rich heritage. Mbedu described debuting the film in South Africa as “moving,” and the national response was immense. During her press tour in Johannesburg, she told local media how blessed she felt by the country’s support. Again her fans answered with enthusiasm commenting on her posts that she was “making us proud” and showering her with blessings.

Even international icons took notice. After Mbedu’s appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Ellen praised her to Oprah Winfrey, saying: “I can’t tell you how amazing you are… you’re incredible.”

All these accomplishments have painted a moving picture of talent and tenacity. As one South African music and culture page put it, “South African pride!”. A sentiment echoed by media outlets and countless fans. Today, Mbedu stands on the cusp of her next big chapter. In Task, set in the suburbs of Philadelphia, she’ll play a key role in a tense FBI drama from the creators of Mare of Easttown. With Ruffalo as the lead FBI agent and Mbedu in the ensemble, Task promises to be another major showcase for her skills. The series is slated for September 2025 and already has South Africans counting the days with pride and excitement.

Thuso’s story is still being written, but one thing is clear… from that little girl in Pietermaritzburg to an actress on the world stage, her journey has filled South Africa with pride. She has overcome every hurdle with grace and grit, and as she takes on Task and whatever comes next, a whole nation is cheering for her! Onward and upward.

With “Higher,” Lloyiso invites us to rise… to believe again, to push through the noise and to find strength in the struggle. This is more than just a single. It’s a soulful call to hope.

South Africa (17 May 2025) – Lloyiso (Loyiso Gijana) is a South African singer-songwriter who has quickly become a global sensation. He first shot to fame in 2015 on Idols South Africa, where, as a 16-year-old, he reached the top five and left an indelible impression with his powerful voice. Since then, he’s built an international career, becoming the first South African artist ever signed to Republic Records, a move that spotlighted his knockout vocals, incredible song-writing, and heartfelt storytelling.

And along the way, Lloyiso has amassed a huge online following, proof that fans everywhere connect with his honest, emotive style.

His rise has been nothing short of spectacular. Lloyiso’s music has gone platinum, his EP Seasons was certified six-times Platinum, and he’s collected major awards, including Best Pop Album at the South African Music Awards. He’s collaborated with international artists like Martin Garrix, and in 2024, he sold out his headline tour Elephant in the Room, including a celebrated date in London. From a young talent on Idols to a voice of hope and healing on the global stage, Lloyiso’s journey is one for the books.

And now, he’s done it again.

Lloyiso’s new single “Higher” truly lives up to its name, offering a soaring message of uplift and self-belief. The track blends his signature warm, soulful vocals with an infectious, pop-tinged melody that urges listeners to keep striving. Written during a period of personal highs and lows, “Higher” captures the journey of overcoming heartbreak and rediscovering inner strength.

As Lloyiso himself explains, “I looked in the mirror and didn’t like what I saw. So, I decided to push myself to become the best version of me,” shares Lloyiso. “I wrote these songs to power you (and me) through the toughest of days and the best of days equally.”

It’s a powerful anthem of self-belief and personal growth—a reminder that even in our most vulnerable moments, we can rise above and aim for more.

Fans have been flooding the YouTube comments with love and gratitude.

One viewer wrote, “That high note gives me goose bumps every time! 🔥🔥”.

Another shared how the track came at just the right moment, calling it “so full of hope.”

Listeners are praising the emotional honesty of the song, calling it “beautiful,” “soul-stirring,” and “uplifting,” with many saying it feels like a warm hug during hard times. It’s clear that “Higher” is resonating deeply, inspiring thousands to keep going and reach for more.

An adored comedian with a heart for others and a talented media strategist driven by purpose are using their platforms to “care out loud” and be champions of humanity by bringing warmth and dignity to women and children in shelters across Gauteng.

Johannesburg, South Africa (15 May 2025) – The golden warmth of South African days is swiftly giving way to a growing chill in the air, as we transition towards the colder season.

As many will be dusting off their coats from the back of the closets or pulling out their cosy blankets to keep toasty in the evenings, South African entertainer Siv Ngesi and communications strategist, Selaelo Mannya, are joining forces to look out for those who would otherwise be left out in the cold this winter.

Fuelled by their passion for social change and involvement in purpose-driven initiatives, Siv and Selaelo have launched a movement called A Giving Circle. At its heart, is to provide warmth and dignity to the less fortunate.

Every ripple starts with a drop, and this movement began with two hearts who chose to care out loud. Selaelo believes giving is a ripple, not a transaction and that stories can mobilise nations. And the outspoken Siv? He is an unshakable champion for period dignity and social justice, and his heart is in every cause he backs.

Together, the pair are using their platforms for good by rallying the public to contribute toward their cause aimed at providing blankets, sanitary pads, and grooming kits to women and children in shelters across Gauteng.

“This isn’t charity. It’s Ubuntu. It’s an honour. It’s all of us, giving what we can, to those who need it most.

“We’re inviting you to join #aGivingCircle, a national ripple effect where one act of giving inspires another,” they said.

To be a part of the movement driven by sheer compassion and humanity, visit their BackaBuddy page here.

What is your take on eating with your hands? While enjoying some pap and meat, Nick Hamman recently stirred up a flavourful online discussion after sharing his perspective on the age-old practice of eating with one’s hands.

Johannesburg, South Africa (11 May 2025) – Well-known South African radio presenter and food content creator, Nick Hamman, caught the attention of several fans and food enthusiasts after sharing his valuable two cents on eating food using his hands.

Eating using one’s hands is a common practice among people everywhere really. Here in South Africa, many enjoy pap, ujeqe (steamed bread), meat, samoosa, boerie rolls and several other meals using their hands whether in their homes or social settings.

In a video shared on his socials, Nick responded to a comment by a Canadian woman who expressed her disapproval with a previous clip shared by Nick of a chef using his hands instead of utensils to eat.

In his response, filmed while he savoured a traditional South African meal of pap and meat with his hands at a local restaurant, Nick passionately defended the practice:

“Some of the oldest and richest cultures in the world eat with their hands. They did because it worked back then, and they still do now. Sometimes, the most cultured, measured thing you can actually do is put down the knife and fork, feel the food in your hands and connect to it with your heart and soul. Any chef worth their salt understands that concept.

“And yes, it’s amazing,” as he enjoyed his pap.

Contrary to the initial criticism Nick received, his views on the value behind enjoying a meal with hands was met with a wave of positivity from the internet by users who responded with comments expressing how food tastes different or better when you eat with your hands or how on one ever complains about pizza being eaten with hands.

Whether you’re grabbing the cutlery or opting to just use your hands when it’s time for your next meal, the post simply serves to remind us that it’s always good to keep an open mind when it comes to different people’s cultural practices – and surely many can agree on that.

Globe (09 May 2025) – There’s something special about watching one of our own take on the world… and win. Tyla, South Africa’s global music sensation, has just dropped her brand-new single Bliss and fans across the globe are already calling it a masterpiece.

After teasing the track during her show-stopping performance at Coachella last month, the full version of Bliss finally landed and it’s everything we hoped it would be.

Smooth. Sultry. Sophisticated. And proudly South African.

Tyla, who has quickly become one of the most exciting voices in music today, continues to blend her roots with modern global sounds in a way that only she can. Known for her genre-defying mix of pop, R&B, and Amapiano (which fans affectionately call Popiano), Tyla has carved out a lane that feels refreshingly her own, and with Bliss, she’s only pushing the boundaries further.

The track was produced by Nolan Lambroza, Dylan Wiggins, and NovaWav, and is layered with a hypnotic Afrofusion beat that wraps around Tyla’s breathy vocals like a dream. Drawing from the nostalgic rhythms of old-school R&B while embracing futuristic pop flair, Bliss is the kind of song you put on and just let play… again and again.

In her own words, Tyla describes this new chapter as an evolution.

“I’ve changed a lot in a short amount of time because I was kind of forced to – with how fast I had to adapt to everything. I don’t think it’s going to be the same energy at all, especially with what I’ve started making. It’s different, but also still Tyla.”

And fans are eating it up. Social media has been buzzing since the drop:

“Tyla never misses! Her voice is pure magic, and ‘Bliss’ is exactly what the title says — pure bliss 🖤🔥 on repeat already!”

“The queen of Popiano is back and it sounds like this album is gonna be fire 😩🔥🇿🇦

“What a time to be South African ❤🇿🇦

From Johannesburg to the biggest stages in the world, Tyla continues to fly our flag high with style, grace and fierce talent. And Bliss is another reminder that the future of music has a proudly South African soundtrack.

An unforgettable night of music, memories, and community awaits as South African icons unite to support one of their own, Darren Scott!

South Africa (09 May 2025) – Veteran broadcaster Darren Scott has spent more than four decades behind the mic, informing, entertaining, and becoming a familiar voice in homes and cars across South Africa. Now, as he battles cancer, that same voice is being echoed back in solidarity by an entire nation.

Darren is facing a serious health challenge after being diagnosed with cancer. Since returning from the United States in early 2024, where he had been receiving treatment under a different medical aid, he has found himself without coverage and battling both the disease and mounting medical costs.

In response, his ex-wife Sarah-Kate Accetta launched a crowdfunding campaign, which raised over R320,000 in just a few days thanks to the public’s overwhelming support.  Today, that fund is at just over 50% of the goal, reaching R502,650.

To help reach that final milestone to cover the treatment he needs, his friends in the industry will be putting on a grand show in aid of his medical expenses. Darren’s network of friends and fans, stand firmly by his side, showing that when one of South Africa’s most iconic voices needs help, the nation doesn’t hesitate to answer the call!

On Wednesday, 14 May, the industry he helped shape is showing up for Benefit for Darren — a one-night-only concert taking place at The Venue, Melrose Arch, from 18:30 to 21:30. And the line-up? Nothing short of iconic.

Expect powerhouse performances from a who’s-who of South African talent, including:

  • Ard Matthews
  • Jesse Clegg
  • Louise Carver
  • Kurt Darren
  • Just Jinjer

Plus comedy from Dave Levinsohn and Mark Banks!

More than just a night out, the benefit is a heartfelt rallying cry: no legend fights alone. And in true South African style, we’re showing up with heart, humour, and harmony.

If you are keen to join, you can get your tickets here.

*Update: Darren Scott sadly passed away on 27 May 2025 after a courageous battle with stage four melanoma. In his 61 years, he became more than just a radio host, he was a household name and a symbol of unity and positivity for many.

After Mia Le Roux was asked who her favourite music artist was, a storm of comments (and internet trolls) gathered. Considering that Mia is South Africa’s first hearing-impaired Miss South Africa, the question, nor its answer, could be simple. Now, Mia has leveraged her authenticity to add clarity to the conversation and put internet trolls in their place.

South Africa (07 May 2025) — The internet can be a very harsh place in which out-of-context snippets can spiral, go viral and unite all variants of trolls.

Recently, Miss South Africa Mia Le Roux got caught in the middle of a big online conversation, one that began when she was asked who her favourite music artist was at the Metro Awards.

It is a well-known fact that Mia is deaf. In fact, her winning the Miss South Africa title was monumental because of this fact—she is the first hearing-impaired Miss South Africa ever.

So, when her response was not merely an artist’s name and reportedly saw her share that she doesn’t have a “favourite South African artist” considering her hearing impairment, a big conversation unravelled.

Several trolls asked, insensitively, why she was at the awards in the first place in that case. Others filled up comment sections with far harsher sentiments.

To the camp who thinks you shouldn’t be at a celebration just because you can’t enjoy it the way other people do, we wonder: is one not allowed to celebrate victories simply because they are victories?

Ultimately, though, it was Mia who put the trolls in their place with her wonderful brand of authenticity and humility.

In her words:

“I want to take a moment to address the conversation happening online about my experience with music. This is, in fact, one of my biggest insecurities.

Within the Deaf community, everyone experiences music differently. Some perform entire songs in South African Sign Language (SASL). Others feel music through rhythm and vibration.

Some dance by counting beats. There are Deaf musicians and artists which I am in awe of, because I can imagine how much dedication it takes.

My own relationship with music is unique. I use cochlear implants, which help me perceive sound—but I have nothing to compare it to, as I’ll never truly know what someone without a device hears.

Growing up, music was always something I tried to connect with—especially because of my family. I remember my dad playing “Love Gets Old” by Wouter Kellerman.

I could see how it moved him. That memory stayed with me—not just because of the sound, but because of the emotion and meaning behind it. That’s what I connected to.

But to be honest—I often struggle with music. I can’t always hear lyrics. Some songs sound unclear to me. I’ve had moments where I’ve played music in the background just to feel less alone.

But that doesn’t mean I’ve always understood it fully. Even now, I can’t confidently identify genres, artists or instruments.

And because of that, I’ve never felt comfortable expressing music preferences—especially in a public setting.

At the Metro Awards when asked about my favourite artist or song, I didn’t want to give a superficial answer or name an artist I couldn’t fully appreciate in the way they deserve. I was trying to be respectful—not evasive.

My experience is my own, and it does not represent the entire Deaf community, as everyone is different.

I acknowledge the harm that can come when stories are shared without full context. I’m learning, too. And I believe in inclusion that’s rooted in truth, not performance.

To the Deaf community: I hear you. I see you. I respect the diversity within our community. And I will continue to grow.
