When Buhle Dlamini, a mother of toddler twins and a hardworking domestic worker, opened up to her employer, Sherees Dalton, about her aggressive cervical cancer diagnosis, Sherees took on the role of a cherished sister, rallying for Buhle’s urgent medical treatment.

Pinetown, South Africa (26 May 2025) – Sometimes, the help of a loving friend can help us conquer the seemingly insurmountable challenges we face during some of the most trying seasons of our lives.

Buhle Dlamini, a devoted mother of four-year-old twins and a hardworking domestic worker in Pinetown, had opened up to her employer-turned-sister, Sherees Dalton, about the physically painful, financially burdensome and overall life-altering reality of being diagnosed with aggressive cervical cancer in February.

In her hour of need, Sherees has been more than just a considerate employer, but Buhle’s source of strength and support.

“She’s become a sister. The sister I never had,” says Sherees.

“We share our lives. We trust each other. When she told me what she was going through, I knew I couldn’t just stand by.”

With Buhle’s father also battling blood cancer, and with little family support around her, the emotional and financial weight has been immense.

“She carries so much on her own,” says Sherees.

“And if Buhle isn’t here, her twins will be orphaned. That’s the reality.”

Before Buhle can receive any treatment, she needs a cone biopsy to determine how far the cancer has spread. From there, she may need a hysterectomy and further specialised care. But until the funds are raised, her journey remains on hold.

Wanting to do more than offer words, Sherees turned to action by launching a BackaBuddy campaign, Miracles for Buhle, to raise R60,000 for the urgent medical treatment, surgery, and transport costs Buhle needs to start her recovery.

“She’s one of the most hardworking, honest people I’ve ever met,” Sherees says.

“She works multiple jobs without complaint. But this isn’t something she can do alone—she needs a community to carry her now.”

The crowdfunding campaign has already been well-received, with just over R3,300 raised from 16 generous donors. And while in need of further support, the messages and small acts of kindness are already making a difference.

“To the people who have donated—even R20—you’ve made me feel like I’m not alone,” says Buhle.

“I can’t find the words to thank you.”

Buhle’s wish is simple:

“I just want to live long enough to raise my children. That’s all I want. That’s what I’m fighting for.”

To help fulfil Buhle’s wish, visit the Miracles for Buhle page.

Cam Cornish was just 1km from the finish line of the Two Oceans Marathon when he collapsed, changing the course of his life and giving his loved ones a new reason to root for him.

Cape Town, South Africa (23 May 2025) – Determination and drive are two words that suited Cam Cornish as he trained to take part in another marathon, this time he had his eye set on the Two Oceans Marathon. However, the race changed the course of his life and gave him an all-new determination and drive.

While it wasn’t Cam’s first marathon, it was a first in such extreme conditions. Facing the extreme heat began to take its toll on Cam and by the end of the race, severe heatstroke was taking hold. His body temperature was rising and once it hit 40°C he was in serious trouble. The problem was his temperature stayed high for far too long and it set off a series catastrophic of events within his body.

First, he was hit with multiple seizures, collapsing before the finish line. By the time emergency services got him to the hospital, his organs were struggling. The prognosis was terrifying!

“Both his kidneys and liver began to fail. He was placed on a ventilator and given just a 10% chance of survival.

As if that wasn’t enough, his body began to shut down further. The trauma caused widespread complications and infection, and a part of his brain was damaged.”

It became the fight for his life as doctors placed Cam under heavy sedation to help prevent any further damage and to give his body a chance to recover. His family rallied and spent every moment they could by his side. After a few weeks, Cam started to make progress. He spent over a month in the ICU, as doctors worked to save his kidneys and liver.

Thankfully, Cam is a fighter and after the 37 days, he was released to a step-down facility where he is now going through extensive rehabilitation to regain his strength and learn to walk again.

“We are incredibly thankful he survived, but the road to recovery is long and intensive. The rehabilitation he needs is critical to his healing and unfortunately, it comes at a significant cost.

Medical aid has been amazing so far, and we’re beyond grateful for the support it’s provided. But as you can imagine, it has its limits and will eventually come to an end. Much of Cam’s ongoing care now depends on private funding.”

Through BackaBuddy, the family hoped to raise the funds needed. They created a crowdfund to raise funds and within days, have already reached over 50%. All the funds are being sent to the rehabilitation facility where Cam is currently staying and making progress.

The family are celebrating every win, every small step and every cheeky quip from Cam as he pushes himself. Doctors are cautiously optimistic while still monitoring his organs, infection levels and other stats.

“Cam is a true warrior. He has already defied the odds and now we want to give him the best possible chance to heal fully and come back stronger than ever.”

Cam has proven himself a warrior, while his race may have ended before he could finish, every step he takes now, is worth a hundred medals.

What began as a childhood pastime at the tender age of four has been groomed into a competitive passion for Bulelani Stephen, propelling him to become a professional chess player who is set to make SA very proud.

Johannesburg, South Africa (23 May 2025) – Chess is a game of patience, calculation, pattern recognition, identifying strategic patterns and making sound choices under pressure, often with limited time. It’s not for everyone, but for 16-year-old Bulelani Stephen, it is everything!

He started chess as a leisure sport when he was just four years old, before falling into a competitively driven love with it and has since worked his way up to becoming a professional chess player.

With the help of his school, chess coaches, parents and siblings, chess is no longer just a fun pass time for the Prestige College learner, it is a lifestyle and a career he is steadily pursuing.

This driven board master has obtained national colours since he was 14. He has now, after an impressive run at the South African Junior Closed Chess Championship in Cape Town last month, been presented with the opportunities to represent South Africa this year at the Fide World Cadet Chess Championship, the African Youth Chess Championship and the Commonwealth Chess Championship.

These global chess tournaments are more than just competitions for Bulelani, they are crucial steps toward his ultimate goal of becoming an International Chess Grandmaster someday.

However, one hurdle stands in his way.

“I have to sponsor myself financially for all these events and cannot do it without your help,” he says.

To help fund his audacious chess dreams, Bulelani has launched a BackaBuddy campaign, appealing for support to help him seize these life-changing opportunities.

To support his ascent in the world of chess, visit Bulelani’s crowdfunding page here.

Many bright and talented students are left behind as they do not qualify for government funding, but also can’t afford higher education fees in their own capacity. In an effort to support these ‘Missing Middle Students’, one professor is running the Comrades to raise funds!

Pretoria, South Africa (23 May 2025) — Professor André Ganswindt, Director of the Mammal Research Institute at the University of Pretoria will soon join runners from across the country at the upcoming Comrades Marathon. However, his reasons for running the phenomenal race are slightly different to most people’s driving factors. Prof Ganswindt is running with ‘missing middle students’ in mind, a gap that continues to grow in the struggling economy of South Africa.

‘Missing middle students’ as a term refers to those who are not in such a state of poverty that they can qualify for certain funding boosts (say, from the government or various trusts) but are not wealthy enough to afford university fees in a personal capacity either.

Prof Ganswindt hopes to run in support of the Vice-Chancellor and Principal’s Scholarship Fund which provides financial assistance to academically strong learners who’d otherwise struggle to complete their education due to funding.

A respected wildlife researcher who has dedicated his life to protecting wildlife and empowering students, Prof Ganswindt knows the power that cracking a door open can have not just for a talented individual, but for a greater Africa.

Having mentored the next generation of researchers in our continent as the holder of the Oppenheimer Chair for Emerging African Scientists in Non-Invasive Wildlife Research, the Prof knows well that the more learners who access opportunities, the better our chances of a brighter future are.

You can support the Prof’s campaign here.

Karin Harmse, the compassionate soul behind Arms of Mercy, has always been a pillar of strength for families in crisis. However, Karin now finds herself facing her own severe health struggles, and her family needs all the support they can get.

Bloubergstrand, South Africa (21 May 2025) – Known to many as the caring soul who has poured herself into Arms of Mercy, a charity that supports children fighting cancer and other life-threatening conditions, Karin Harmse been a living source of solace for just about anyone who has crossed her path.

She has witnessed the pain and suffering of families in crisis and never hesitated to be a source of comfort, hope, and unwavering strength.

But today, the tables have heartbreakingly turned, as Karin faces her own severe health struggle and needs the very help she has so selflessly given to so many others.

Devastated by Karin’s current battle, her husband, Anton, shares that she has a malformed gallbladder that cannot be removed due to the risks posed by previous surgeries.

“Recently, she was diagnosed with severe anaemia; her iron levels are critically low, prompting her specialist to begin urgent iron infusion treatments, but further tests are needed to find out if there’s internal bleeding.

“These tests have already been postponed twice due to financial constraints. We know this cannot wait much longer, as untreated anaemia can become life-threatening,” Anton reveals.

Karin has also lost sight in one of her eyes irreversible retinal damage, with the other requiring cataract removal and specialised lens replacement to preserve what vision she still has.

She has been putting up the bravest fight, all while trying to run a small business, the charity and raise a foster child together with Anton.

“As the sole provider, I do my best, but I can no longer carry this alone. It is incredibly difficult for me to say this, but we need help,” Anton humbly appeals.

The family is hoping to raise R25,000 to cover Karin’s urgent medical needs, including her critical tests, ongoing treatments, and the eye surgery that could preserve her sight.

“My wife has given so much of herself to others. Now, I am asking from the depths of my heart for compassion in return.

“Please consider standing by her in this moment. Your support would mean the world to us and could be life-changing for her.”

Donations towards Karin’s fight can be made to the family’s BackBuddy page.

K9 handler Murray Holland endured a gruelling 250-mile ultramarathon through Arizona’s diverse and unforgiving terrain with the deep desire to honour his late father and stand in solidarity with those battling cancer.

Flagstaff, Arizona (19 May 2025) – In honour of his dad and in support of countless warriors courageously facing cancer, day in and out, Murray Holland channelled his adventurous spirit and big heart to ignite hope by participating in one of the most physically intense races of his lifetime, the Cocodona 250.

The Cocodona 250 is a 250-mile (402 km) ultramarathon that takes place in Arizona every year from Black Canyon City and ends in Flagstaff.

This was an astronomical physical challenge for Murray, who had been training extensively for the past year, to successfully complete the race in honour of his father, who sadly passed fighting leukaemia.

Reflecting on the race, Murray, who is also a K9 Search and Rescue Association handler, said it was an intense 111 hours that pushed his physical and mental limits.

“You cross varying terrain, from arid landscapes dotted with huge cactuses, giant pine forests and the rock formations of Sedona. The total elevation is 5,500m of climbing. Usually the weather is very dry and hot.

“This year we had rain, hail, snow and temperatures that hit zero. The mud was intense which made for some interesting descents. But after that, we got into the forests near Flagstaff, where the running was flatter and smoother. That was until we hit Elden Mountain and had a 1,500m climb before dropping back down into the finish in the town of Flagstaff,” Murray tells the K9 Search and Rescue Association.

And after all the blood, sweat, tears and unforgiving conditions, Murray received the warmest welcome from the crowd at the finish line, a sweet finish to a rather gruelling adventure.

Murray’s efforts, fuelled by memory and compassion, have seen him raise R24,260 so far for the Candy Cane Project, an initiative that raises funds to donate directly to individuals who cannot afford the high costs of their medical bills to fight cancer.

He has played a significant part in alleviating the financial burden on patients and their families so that they may focus on their battle against this horrible disease and give them the best chance to overcome it.

For all this, we celebrate your feat and salute you, Murray!

Brandon Gill recently celebrated his 27th birthday in a huge way, running for 27 hours (STRAIGHT) to raise funds for underprivileged children’s running shoes. 145kms, Brandon survived and surpassed his target!

Port Elizabeth, South Africa (18 May 2025) — It’s not everyday that a man decides to casually run for 27 hours straight, but Brandon Gill put himself up to the task for good reason: a lot of children in need would benefit from a birthday run like this.

Brandon dedicated his 27th birthday to community organisation Hope 4 Kids with a plan of action: he was going to tackle as many kilometres as possible to raise funds to purchase the kids running shoes.

“Every child deserves the opportunity to dream big, play freely, and explore the world around them, but for many children in underprivileged communities, something as simple as a pair of running shoes is out of reach,” said Brandon. “Without the right footwear, they miss out on the joys of running, sports, and even just having the confidence to be active.”

After a 10km road race he undertook in Colchester (in which multiple children ran barefoot, albeit with glee), Brandon became inspired to put his own running shoes to the best use.

“That day in Colchester inspired me to try and make a difference in some of these children’s lives.”

Last week Friday, Brandon kicked off his 27th birthday celebrations with his own personal marathon. Incredibly, he pushed on, one foot in front of the other, well into Saturday afternoon. We don’t even want to imagine how his body must’ve felt!

As his university, Nelson Mandela University, highlight, their biokineticist alumni surpassed the combined distance of the Comrades and Two Oceans marathons combined; clearing some 145kms!

The birthday run fundraiser was a massive success despite the challenges that are be expected from such an intense feat. From battling the cold to fighting through exhaustion, Brandon saw his initiative through not just by means of his own strength, but the encouragement of others including his girlfriend Jana Relihan who ran with him during the tough times, family members and friends and, heartwarmingly, the Hope 4 Kids children who joined him for the last stretch of the mission!

In fact, the kids crossed the finish line with Brandon; clapping and singing in a powerful moment Brandon expressed as one that meant the world to him.

Thanks to the big birthday run, Brandon raised R29,700 for the children’s running shoes.

South Africa’s generosity has given a father and husband a fighting chance against one of the rarest forms of cancer. We previously shared how your kind hearts helped contribute a large portion to Reverend Barry Fourie’s treatment, and the incredible news is it’s working!

Eastern Cape, South Africa (14 May 2025) – When hope seemed like a fragile thread, the incredible generosity of South Africans has given Reverend Barry Fourie and his family the strength to persevere and a true fighting chance.

Diagnosed with a rare Epithelioid Inflammatory Myofibroblastic Sarcoma, Reverend Barry Fourie is now halfway through his cancer treatment, and it is working!

Fourie’s daughter, Minki, was overjoyed and deeply grateful to share her father’s progress with Good Things Guy.

“It is amazing how our story touched people’s hearts and their contributions have helped us raise an incredible R820,000 of the R1.5 million required for his treatment.

“We’re deeply thankful for everyone’s trust in our cause and their willingness to help,” Minki shared.

Despite the challenges, particularly the fact that medical aid does not cover Fourie’s immunotherapy treatment, the family refuses to lose hope that he will make a full recovery.

Together they have gone above and beyond to rally support and pay towards his treatment through fundraisers, raffles, food sales and appeals. South Africa’s continued support through heartfelt donations has also played a significant part of the journey.

“We have received great news so far, the treatment is working!! We have seen a 33% decrease in the sarcoma that grows after surgery. We know we are on the right treatment and my dad is feeling good on it,” Minki added.

Reverend Fourie needs just a little more support to afford his remaining immunotherapy treatment. If you can, please consider donating to his BackaBuddy page here.

Scott Hargrave held onto one dream: to become a doctor. Despite an impressive academic record, his path to medical school was paved with disheartening rejections. But he never gave up on the one thing he wanted most, and now, nearly a decade later, things are finally looking up.

Johannesburg, South Africa (08 May 2025) – All he has ever wanted was to become a doctor, and now, finally, after eight years of trying, Scott Hargrave was accepted into the Wits Graduate Entry Medical Programme at the start of this year.

The dream to touch lives through medicine was realised during his studies while pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Human Genetics and Physiology.

“My first application was in 2016 while completing my Honours degree in Biomedical Oncology,” shared Scott.

“With the applications came the rejections, which were disappointing and disheartening despite fulfilling all the requirements, applying at multiple universities and throwing in a distinction for my Master’s degree, for good measure.”

However, even with his impressive academic history, Scott still struggled to get into med school.

Refusing to let his passion for healing die, he found another way to positively impact lives by pursuing a diploma in Therapeutic Massage and working as a massage therapist.

However, he is now studying towards his lifelong dream to become “Dr Scott Hargrave” – a dream in which he needs financial support in order to fulfil.

With fees estimated at R100,000 per year for three years, Scott launched a BackaBuddy campaign with hopes of receiving some help from the greater public toward covering the hefty cost.

“This is a lifelong dream of mine that I haven’t given up on, and the only way to make this dream a reality is by asking for help.

“Any contributions, no matter how small, would be greatly appreciated. I cannot express how grateful I am for this opportunity and the support,” Scott heartfeltly appealed.

New wife and first-time mom Eldorét Visser was able to receive a vital oncoplastic surgery this week thanks to the empathy and kindness of 85 donors who gave whatever they could to restore her hope and health.

Franschhoek, South Africa (07 May 2025) – The kindness of 85 hearts has restored hope for a young mother during one of her most life-altering health battles yet.

As a 38-year-old newlywed and first-time mom, Eldorét Visser was at the start of an exciting new chapter, looking forward to immersing herself in her new roles as mommy and wife. However, one month before her little girl turned one, she was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer after thinking that the lump in her breast was a side effect of breastfeeding.

“As you can imagine, this came as a massive shock, being a full-time mom whilst working full-time and heading into wedding season as a wedding coordinator,” Eldorét recalls.

She underwent one session of chemotherapy every three weeks for four months, followed by one session a week for 12 weeks.

“Each session came with the side effects of nausea, exhaustion, mouth sores, skin breakouts, needles and pins in my feet, and an extremely compromised immune system, which left me feeling drained, yet there is no chance to rest with a now 18-month-old toddler at my feet, the light of my life.”

Her father, also being diagnosed with colon cancer around the same time, came as yet another heartbreaking blow. This prompted Eldorét to do a genetic test, which confirmed the likelihood that her cancer would return, forcing her to consider a double mastectomy.

This was when she turned to the kindness of those who would care enough to hear and empathise with her story.

After launching a crowdfunding campaign on BackaBuddy, Eldorét was met with heartfelt compassion as funds, totalling R77,800, poured in to help cover her oncoplastic surgery scheduled for this week.

The advanced procedure involved a double mastectomy, followed by an advanced microsurgical process which not only removes the cancer but ensures quality of life after this dreadful disease.

The surgery, powered by caring hearts, has afforded this wife and mom the priceless gift of living to see her little girl grow with her husband by her side.
