The Boksburg SPCA shared the heartbreaking and harrowing yet hopeful tale of Malaysia, a kitten found trapped in a container that travelled across the sea for 40 days!
Boksburg, South Africa (01 February 2025) – It’s safe to say, stop reading this right now and go grab a tissue or five! Ok, got them? Let’s begin… The Boksburg SPCA tagged Good Things Guy in their latest “breaking news” post about an animal rescue. As we read it, our hearts broke and were filled with love all in one moment. The story features a little kitten that was trapped inside a container that was loaded in Malaysia, the container travelled for 40 days across sea and then land, finding its way to Gauteng. When the teams opened the container, there was a tiny, near-death kitten trapped inside.
Cue the tears! The Boksburg SPCA shared that when their inspector arrived, he found the kitten in a pitiful state:
“Malaysia, as we have named her, was immediately seen by our vet. This little survivor, who is estimated to be 5/6 months weighed in at a mere 700 grams and was skin and bones! We are extremely amazed at how she managed to survive!! š. She also has a broken tail that was damaged a while ago š„¹! After a check-up and settling her in for the night, we anxiously waited for morning⦠Malaysia, who is surprisingly friendly despite her ordeal, greeted our staff with a soft meow āØā¦. We were so relieved that she survived the night.”
Since her rescue a week ago, Malaysia has managed to regain her strength and gain some much-needed weight. She has quickly earned her place as the office cat, spending her days where the team can keep a watchful eye on her progress.
“Malaysia has been eating well and had a follow up checkup with Dr Nick – since sheās been in our care she is slowly gaining weight š and as of yesterday now weighs 1kg šš¼. Her own space has been set up in the office so we can monitor her while she builds her strength and adapts to the new sounds around her. Still a little shy she is starting to ātalkā to us and enjoys sitting on our carers laps āŗļø.”
Due to her fragile state, Malaysia is on a specialised kitten food diet. This is helping her get the correct nutrients to regain strength. They shared a plea for help in keeping this incredible survivor fed and purring with her favourite treats!
The Boksburg SPCA team shared that they lost access to their charity Facebook page, which had a great following and have struggled to rebuild their online community, thus affecting their usual donations, which have dwindled since the social media loss.
In an effort to raise funds for Malaysia’s specialised care, they have set up several donation options which will help the team rebuild a donor base and care for the fragile kitten.
