A Linden Librarian’s exciting vision make public libraries greener and more beneficial to communities has earned her international recognition.

Linden, South Africa (28 May 2025) — A Linden Librarian’s super idea to help libraries benefit communities more in the greenest way has caught and held international attention. Ms Tebello Sengora thinks that underused library spaces are gardens waiting to be created, something that could well benefit library patrons as well as encourage new members from the broader community.

Recently, Ms Sengora received an Honourable Mention at the 2025 Next Festival held in Denmark for her idea dubbed ‘The Green Shelf Network’.

An international event, the Next Library Festival takes a look at libraries in the future; inviting visionaries within library spaces across the world to share their thoughts as to how the libraries of tomorrow could and should look for the betterment of learning.

The Linden Librarian’s Green Shelf Network caught the attention of the festival. Per Joburg Libraries, the idea is to transform libraries into “modular gardens that connect communities with nature, literacy and sustainability.” How iconic is that?

Importantly, residents of Johannesburg would be hugely involved in the gardens from design to maintenance and crop-sharing in an effort to hold firm community buy-in and pride.

“This interactive experience not only beautifies library spaces and feeds communities, but also fosters a connection between nature, culture, health and even technology,” Joburg Libraries praised.

Ms Sengora was selected for the Honourable Mention as part of the 2025 Changemaker Award category which was introduced this year. The Changemaker Award honours thinkers whose focus orbits innovation.

She was one of just six out of 23 countries awarded with an honourable mention, including an Ireland representative’s idea to ‘take the library to the streets’.

In a bold move, one romantic decided to she wasn’t going to leave her love life up to fate. Taking to a Sandton community group, she bravely shared a post searching for the mysterious silver fox she’d encountered recently, and Sandtoners have since responded with all the support!

Sandton, South Africa (26 May 2025) — Whoever said you can’t find love in Sandton clearly hasn’t tried hard enough. One romantic named Nikki Vee has got Sandtoners everywhere invested in her (potential) love story after she boldly shot her shot in one of the most unexpected places, a community Facebook group with twenty thousand people.

For those of us who couldn’t imagine walking up to a stranger at a bar, let alone announcing our interest on an entire community group, Nikki’s effort is considerably badass.

Taking to I Love Sandton (BHC), Nikki shared the story of her search for an unnamed silver fox.

“I can’t believe I’m doing this and here goes nothing…” the post reads, before describing the person she’s searching for as a silver fox who was spotted down the Trumps corridor

But, the real heart of this story is how encouraging Nikki’s fellow Sandtoners were.

Several people wished her luck, while others came up with suggestions for how she might find her mystery man and others even offered to join the search.

“I love this…I hope you get your happy ever after,” one Sandtoner wrote, while another commented that it “sounds like the making of a great love story.”

By far and large, the response was positive.

In a world where so many of us might fear doing big and bold things because we’re worried about what others will think, this little post and the community that embraced it is a reminder that sometimes we can and should give people more credit (and faith).

While we’re not sure how the silver fox search unfolded at the time of this article’s writing, we are as invested as everyone else to learn what happens next!

“My girlfriend says I love this bicycle more than her.”

Soweto, South Africa (18 May 2025) — The streets of Soweto came alive at the weekend as scores of young people showed off their customised BMX bicycles.

This cycling subculture was born out of the more commonly known car “stance” culture, where vehicle owners spend a lot of time and money customising their cars with specialised paint jobs, flashy wheels and loud sound systems.

Many young people in townships like Soweto may not have the resources to buy and customise their own cars. Instead, they focus their passion and creativity on their trusty two-wheeled bicycles.

Participants in the BMX subculture, most of whom are teenagers, are often seen cruising around Soweto on their unique and flashy bikes, the sound of the latest amapiano songs booming from the speakers attached to the rear of their bicycles.

Lesego Mathiane with his chromed-out BMX with speakers installed on the rear.

Many have completely stripped their original frame of the bicycles to rebuild it to suit their particular style. We spoke to Lungelo Hlongwane and his group of friends, who were on their way to a bicycle meetup in Soweto’s Thokoza Park.

Hlongwane parks his bike alongside the row of customised bikes as they prepare for the judges to inspect them for a prize. His bike, bright pink with shiny rims and chrome handlebars, is given a final wipe-down before the inspection.

“I have maybe spent thousands of rands on my bicycle. I saved up my spending money and even worked odd jobs to pay for all this. My girlfriend says I love this bicycle more than her,” says Hlongwane with a smile.

One of the cyclists shows off his skills on a custom bike and modified back wheel used for spinning.

Bicycle meetups often draw crowds with hundreds of people from different townships who come to compete to see who has the best-looking bicycle. Often, prizes are on offer for winners.

Hloni Ramaila, a BMX rider who organised a recent meetup in Diepkloof, said that it was important for youth to have a healthy creative outlet.

“Bicycles bring so much joy to so many people. To see this bicycle culture thriving in the township shows the high level of creativity of youth,” said Ramaila.

Some of the cyclists participate in the “spinning” competitions, a culture also born from the growing popularity of car spinning. Cyclists cover their rubber tyres with bits of plastic from coke bottles which allows their bike wheels to spin and drift across the road surface.

Those with the best technique, creativity and innovation grab the top prize and bragging rights for the week.

Bicycle meetups regularly draw crowds. Here, these bikes are lined up, waiting for judges to inspect them.

Njabulo Shongwe regularly competes in bicycle spinning competitions. His talent for drifting his bicycle has already secured him paid gigs in the entertainment and advertising industry.

Shongwe and his friends formed the Soweto Street Fighters bicycle crew, with members competing in the stance, spinning and racing competitions at bicycle meetups.

“Some of the guys are good at spinning and some are creative in making beautiful bicycles. We all come together as friends and try to keep growing the culture,” said Shongwe.

Siyabonga Mabuso accompanied his grandson to a recent bicycle meetup in Soweto. He was impressed by the creativity and originality of the bicycle creations on display.

“We have many challenges here with youngsters who abuse drugs and get involved in criminality. So, to see them come together in such a positive way and having such fun makes me very happy,” said Mabuso.

Last year, enough funds were raised to give 500 white canes to visually impaired people. Now, local Guide Dogs and their friends are preparing to one-up the impact with the second annual Give a Cane Campaign!

South Africa (16 May 2025) – Mtale Moodise is a gym enthusiast from Cosmo City. But, without his white cane to guide his way, he’d have a pretty tough time getting to and from his favourite place. The same goes for Ceala, who lost her vision suddenly during matric. Now a student studying Psychology at the University of Pretoria, Ceala’s white cane is an imperative tool to her freedom and academic success. These are just two of hundreds of stories in which white canes have made a difference for South Africans. Which is exactly why the Give a Cane campaign matters as much as it does.

Last year, the SA Guide-Dogs Association’s Give a Cane Campaign made its debut and raised enough funds to buy 500 white canes for the visually impaired. Following its success, the Guide Dogs team are amping up for a new year of impact; setting their sights on 1000 canes!

“A white cane is so much more than a mobility aid,” says Pieter van Niekerk, spokesperson for the SA Guide-Dogs Association and a white cane user himself. “It’s freedom, dignity, and the confidence to move through life independently.”

The white cane used by SA Guide-Dogs is not a regular walking stick. It’s actually a specialised mobility tool fitted with a rounded ball tip that’s designed to detect changes in terrain, so that the user can know the whether they’ve gone from sidewalk to tactile paving. It’s distinctive look also helps others in the area know that the user is visually impaired and not just, say elderly.

All of this in mind, it can mean a life with more freedom and help to someone who needs it.

Getting involved in the 2025 Give a Cane Campaign is easy peasy. You can raise funds solo or with your office or school. You can tackle a big run or organise a small walkathon, dress-up-a-thon or even a blind fold challenge day.

The point isn’t so much how you participate, it’s that you participate!

And, in good news for businesses, donations are eligible for Section 18A Tax Certificates.

The Give a Cane Campaign is running until 31 July, and you can find out more about contributing and donating, here.

Need motivation to keep your running routine up or push yourself more? The Love Challenge 2025 will see runners tackle 105kms in 21 days to support The Secret Love Project! Here’s how to throw your hat in the ring:

Cape Town, South Africa (12 May 2025) — If the winter blues are starting to settle in and you’re struggling to find the motivation to stick to or start your running routine, The Secret Love Project might just have the answer to help you get into your groove for good. The Love Challenge 2025 is around the corner, and everyone is invited to lace up in support!

The Secret Love Project (SLP) is a non-profit dedicated to uplifting the homeless. Not only does the organisation shift narratives about homelessness and remind Cape Town that a little love can go a very long way, it also actively provides people in tough situations a means to change their own narratives.

People experiencing homelessness can transform their lives through SLP by selling heart stickers across the City of Cape Town. This way, sellers are able to feel a sense of responsibility and agency again by working for an income; all while receiving skills development and emotional support through the SLP team.

The Love Challenge is a way to support the heart of the SLP: the people experiencing homelessness. The big goal this June is to make winter a little kinder to those on the street.

“Help us provide warmth, dignity, and protection for those sleeping rough this winter,” share the SLP team. “Every step you take helps someone stay dry. Every rand raised goes directly o keeping our homeless community dry this winter.”

The Challenge:

  • Runners are tasked to complete 105kms in 21 days while fundraising for SLP (R4,000 minimum).
  • There are no rules to how many kms you run a day, so long as you total 105kms by 28 June 2025.
  • The challenge kicks off on 8 June and ends on 28 June 2025.
  • Prizes include a weekend away, pendants of appreciation, mystery prizes and of course, the knowing that your runs are contributing significantly to another human’s wellbeing.

Throw your hat in the ring, here.

On Sunday, climbers from all over the Cape (and beyond) will tackle Platteklip Gorge as many times as their bodies can handle for a big cause as part of the annual Cableway Charity Challenge. Massively, the pledges have already surpassed the R1 million mark. Meaningfully, there’s a new upcycled medal for racers to look forward to!

Cape Town, South Africa (09 May 2025) — Sunday 11 May marks a big day on the climbers’ calendar. It’s the annual Cableway Charity Challenge in which racers will tackle Platteklip Gorge as many times as they can to inflict positive change, boost pledges and don a upcycled medal packed with meaning at the end of it all.

The upcycled medal is an exciting addition to the challenge. This year, each finisher will receive a medal that’s been crafted from the retired track rope cable once used by the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company, their own piece of lasting cableway history. The track rope cable has been cut up into discs by residents of The Ark City of Refuge (a Cape Town-based organisation supporting people impacted by homelessness and unemployment).

As such, the medal is extra meaningful; representing both second chances for materials and people all while embodying notes of resilience, dignity and communal purpose.

Executive Director of TMACC, Selma Hercules says that the team wanted to share a unique token of appreciation with participants this year.

“We chose something that was a reflection of the event and of the strength of the mountain. It also was a reminder of the power of the hands of local makers that went into the making of the medals, and of the impact of the money raised on the day.”

This year, the Cableway Charity Challenge is supporting a host of causes. Pledges have already surpassed the R1 million mark. However, sights are set on matching last year’s pledges (over R1.2 million) or pledging even more.

The causes supported are:

Ubuntu Football (in which young people are mentored through sport and life-skills development), Funda Kunye (who help early childhood development in under-resourced areas), Volunteer Wildfire Services (the team who help firefighters and protect natural heritage) and Wilderness Search and Rescue (the brave network of volunteers who ensure mountain rescues are possible and accessible).

“The support we receive through the Charity Challenge helps us build stronger, more nurturing foundations for children at the most critical stage of their development,” says Funda Kunye’s Karen Temlett.

Echoes Johann Marais of WSAR, “People come to the mountain for joy and adventure…when things go wrong, we’re there, and it’s support like this that ensures we can always be.”

Even if you aren’t racing for the cause and the upcycled medal moment, you can still make a pledge to the mission here.

A mother’s love, a devastating injustice and a hand-stitched heart sparked a movement. Martha: A Heartfelt South African Story is the film that will leave you changed.

South Africa (01 May 2025) – A short film is making waves across South Africa, not because it’s filled with drama or spectacle, but because it’s real. Deeply human. And overflowing with heart.

Martha: A Heartfelt South African Story (featured below) is a powerful new short documentary that invites viewers into a story shaped by love, injustice, resilience, and the quiet strength of one remarkable woman.

Directed by Erin Nel from Fell and Company and executive produced by Blake Dyason from CN&CO, the film tells the extraordinary true story of Martha Letsoalo, a domestic worker who became a second mother to Julie Hadley and her siblings during the apartheid era. In a time when society tried to keep people apart, the Hadley family embraced Martha and her children as their own.

But life would throw Martha a devastating curve.

Her son, Emanuel, was wrongfully imprisoned for a crime he didn’t commit. Martha spent her life savings trying to free him, determined to fight the injustice. Just weeks before his expected release, Emanuel tragically died in prison. It’s the kind of heartbreak that could destroy anyone but Martha chose to keep going. Still determined to work, still refusing charity, she carried on with grace and dignity. Julie, searching for a way to help that Martha would accept, sent her a small parcel of felt, some thread and a simple idea… hand-stitch hearts to sell.

Martha didn’t just stitch a few. She made 200.

And those 200 felt hearts became the foundation of Heartfelt, a social enterprise that now employs women in Martha’s community of Makapanstad. A business born not from profit but from purpose. From love. From legacy.

What started as a quiet act of kindness became something far bigger than anyone imagined.

Martha: A Heartfelt South African Story is a reminder of what the spirit of Ubuntu truly means: I am because we are. So press play, watch below and be reminded that even in the face of the greatest loss, something beautiful can still grow because when hearts are stitched with love, they don’t just heal… they uplift entire communities.

A voice that captures the heart of South Africa: Elana Afrika-Bredenkamp joins the Good Things conversation.

Johannesburg, South Africa (30 April 2025) – Every so often, you meet someone whose energy feels like it could light up a thousand rooms. This week on Good Things with Brent Lindeque, I had the absolute joy of sitting down with Elana Afrika-Bredenkamp… one of South Africa’s brightest voices, storytellers and changemakers.

Friends, she is such an amazing, beautiful dazzling light.

Elana is more than just a familiar voice on the radio or a celebrated face on our screens. She is the very spirit of vibrant South Africa, blending warmth, wisdom, wit and an unwavering commitment to uplift others in everything she does. From midmorning radio on Jacaranda FM, to her ground-breaking podcast work, to giving back through sport and education, Elana’s journey is layered with good things worth shouting about.

We spoke about her passion for podcasting… a medium where she truly shines. Her Parent & Baby Brunch has touched the lives of thousands of families, offering comfort, advice and laughter through the chaos of parenthood. Between hosting one of the country’s most-loved radio shows, managing ballet lessons, hockey practice and bedtime stories at home, Elana found the time to sit down for a very candid interview. And what makes Elana’s story such a good thing is not just the accolades or the achievements (although they are pretty phenomenal), it’s the way she carries it all… with authenticity, humility and a heart so deeply rooted in giving back. She reminded me that success means more when you lift others as you rise and that our voices, no matter how big or small, have the power to connect, heal and inspire.

If you haven’t yet, go give our full conversation a listen (or a watch below). It’s packed with laughter, life lessons and all the good things that make you believe in the beauty of this country.

Professor Karin Baatjies has a simple birthday wish: help healthcare students and the future of our healthcare system. But, she’s not just relying on lucky candles to make this happen.

Stellenbosch, South Africa (25 April 2025) — Professor Karin Baatjies of Stellenbosch University has once again put her birthday to the best use for the betterment of students and the future of our Healthcare System.

As the Vice Dean of Learning and Teaching for the University, Prof Baatjies knows well the struggles higher education students face financially. However, she’s not merely relying on lucky birthday candles to make the help happen!

Once again, the Prof is the driving force behind Birthday for Bursaries; an initiative that’s all about getting active and fundraising for the next generation set to lead our healthcare system.

Now in its third year, Birthday for Bursaries unites people through different challenges in a bid to raise funds and have fun in the process.

This year the activities included the Tyger Run/Walk, the Cape Town Cycle Tour, The Two Oceans Marathon and the 2025 Merrell Mammoth Woodridge Adventure Race. The funds raised contribute to the Ithemba Bursary Fund which provides essential financial help to deserving students.

In an exciting update, Birthday for Bursaries is rapidly nearing its target of R80,000, with Stellenbosch University’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences reporting that almost R70,000 has been raised already.

“This fund provides crucial financial support to health sciences students, ensuring no bright mind is left behind due to financial constraints,” shares the Prof.

Meanwhile in more news where healthcare workers are getting a boost, the Groote Schuur Hospital Trust has launched its own plan of action to support emergency surgeries in a bid to save more lives, more effectively. Read more, here.
