The united efforts of our brave firefighters have seen them face raging flames head-on in the Tokai and Silvermine areas of Table Mountain since Friday, as crews work hard on the ground day and night to contain the wildfire and protect surrounding communities.

Cape Town, South Africa (29 April 2025) – About 250 brave firefighters have been working tirelessly and bravely on the ground since Friday, trying to put out a ravaging wildfire in the Tokai and Silvermine areas of Table Mountain National Park (TMNP).

According to TMNP, while winds were calm during the early Sunday evening, they picked up around midnight on Monday, 28 April, requiring intense firefighting activity to manage flare-ups.

Undeterred by challenging conditions, including shifting winds and low visibility, these heroes have worked together with aerial support to protect the natural environment and surrounding communities.

Fresh crews were deployed yesterday morning to relieve those on the ground, and four helicopters were on standby to resume water-bombing operations as soon as low mist and lingering smoke lifted.

As of yesterday evening, while the wildfire was still ongoing, crews have made commendable progress in managing flare-ups and controlling fire conditions in the Zwaanswyk, Ou Kaapse Weg, Silvermine, and Noordhoek areas, preventing the blaze from spreading to nearby communities.

While there has also been substantial damage to about 3,000 hectares of vegetation, thankfully, there haven’t been reports of structural damage.

It is difficult to fully comprehend what these firefighters may have witnessed, endured and experienced over the past few hours. These courageous men and women have faced the flames head-on, risking their own safety to safeguard the environment and the well-being of the community. For all this, we cannot thank and applaud them enough!

The Tokai and Silvermine hiking trails remain closed until further notice, and the public is urged to avoid the central and southern sections of Table Mountain National Park for their own safety.

It is not every day that someone confronts the very thing that threatened their very life and uses it to pour back into others. Last year, Tania Morkel faced a near-fatal fall down a ravine on Table Mountain. This year, with remarkable resolve, she not only returned to climb the mountain but also set out to raise funds for the heroes who rescued her – and she has triumphantly succeeded!

Cape Town, South Africa (23 April 2025) – Deservingly dubbed “Table Mountain’s heroic first lady”, Tania Rosslee Morkel is just over halfway through her personal 64-climb Table Mountain summit, but she has already achieved her fundraising goal!

To bring you up to speed with this heroic woman’s journey, Tania slipped and fell 18 meters down a ravine in September 2023 at the age of 64, instantly sending her into the ICU with multiple severe injuries and fractures.

However, Tania didn’t succumb to these injuries. After a remarkable recovery, Tania took on a herculean effort to not just go back to climb Table Mountain, but to do it 64 times and to raise R64,000 for the Wilderness Search And Rescue (WSAR) – the crew that rescued and saved her, as well as the SANParks – Table Mountain National Park.

And as of last week Thursday, Tania completed 38 out of her 64 climbs AND raised R65,500! Audaciously surpassing her amazing goal!

Good Things Guy got in touch with this inspiring heroine, who shared that the experience has mimicked her early recovery in many ways.

“While I expected it to be primarily a physical challenge, it turned out to be a mental game I played daily. In the beginning, I constantly feared falling ill, injuring myself, or extreme weather events ruining the challenge.

“On day 18, I had a nauseous and dizzy episode following a reaction to a natural supplement, and I ended up in the Cableway First Aid room.”

Admittedly, Tania’s confidence did take a knock after that and having her husband in the hospital at around the same time did not make things any easier for her. However, through counselling, Tania has been able to dig deep, become resourceful and learnt to do each day’s walk without worrying about the next day.

“Deep contentment settled in me, and I knew I couldn’t control external forces, only my response to them,” she shares.

With 21 more climbs to go and having raised an impressive R68,500 to date, Tania is overwhelmed with gratitude for each and every one who has sown into her cause.

“I’m grateful for the incredible support I’ve received for the 64×64 WSAR & TMNP Table Mountain Challenge! I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone who donated, shared, and encouraged me along the way.

“Even though I have faced many challenges during this time, everyone’s generosity and encouragement have fueled my journey immeasurably. I am excited to see what more we can achieve by supporting these two worthy causes”.

Tania’s determination inspires awe and celebrates the incredible power of the human will to overcome adversity and give back.

If you happen to be in the Mother City and around the iconic landmark, you may just spot her ascending the mountain, driven by sheer gratitude and resilience.

Tania Morkel’s hiking adventure on Table Mountain took a terrifying turn when she suffered a devastating 18-meter fall. Now, healed and recovered, she is taking on 64 summits in 64 days to give back to the heroes who saved her life.

Cape Town, South Africa (10 April 2025) – A hiking adventure on 13 September 2023 changed Tania Morkel’s life forever when she tragically plunged 18 meters down a ravine between the Platteklip Gorge and India Venster hiking trails on Table Mountain in Cape Town.

“Fortunately, my wonderful niece, who accompanied me on the hike, immediately called the Wilderness Search and Rescue (WSAR).

“An Austrian hiker with a medical background came across the scene and stabilised me until the WSAR team arrived. The team’s expertise and compassion were evident as they assessed my condition and prepared for evacuation,” Tania recalls.

She was soon airlifted to safety before being taken to the renowned Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital where she spent 23 days in ICU. There it was discovered that Tania had suffered multiple spinal fractures and two lumbar burst fractures, a fractured skull, a brain haemorrhage, several broken ribs, a punctured lung, a lacerated kidney and spleen, and damage to my liver, among other injuries.

Fast forward several months later, and Tania has since made an incredible recovery which is just a testament to her brave fighting spirit.

During her recovery, she couldn’t ignore a deep desire to give back to WSAR, the team that was instrumental in saving her life.

As a result, she has embarked on an awe-inspiring journey to climb Table Mountain 64 times in 64 days to raise R64,000 for WSAR as well as the Table Mountain National Park (TMNP).

“Each climb’s elevation is approximately 750m, so I will attempt to climb a whopping 48,000 meters’ elevation over the next 64 days.

“This is my way of expressing gratitude, ensuring that others enjoy Table Mountain’s beauty while remaining safe, and supporting the WSAR heroes working tirelessly to protect lives,” Tania shares.

She has already raised R23,500 and completed 30 of the 64 climbs, and could do with all the support she can get!

If you’re passionate about nature and want to actively contribute to preserving some of our iconic landmarks, becoming a SANParks Honorary Ranger may be right up your alley!

Cape Town, South Africa (03 February 2025) – Table Mountain National Park, home to one of the 7 Wonders of Nature, is more than just a view – it’s our natural heritage that needs us all to play a part in ensuring it continues to thrive for future generations to enjoy.

One of the many ways to do this is by becoming an Honorary Ranger! The South African Parks (SANParks) is calling on all nature enthusiasts to become part of its mission to restore trails, safeguard wildlife, keep visitors safe, educate the youth and support vital conservation projects.

SANParks Honorary Rangers give South Africans with a passion for nature the opportunity to help protect and preserve our unique natural heritage for the benefit of future generations.

There are more than 2,100 SANParks Honorary Rangers – all volunteers – based in 31 regions around the country and working in all 21 of the national parks.

Safeguarding Table Mountain

The Honorary Rangers in the Table Mountain region are typically involved in fundraising efforts to support various projects and wishlist items. Their responsibilities include maintaining the structural integrity of hiking and cycling trails, as well as various park infrastructures. They conduct visitor safety patrols by vehicle, bicycle, and on foot in high-traffic areas such as Table Mountain.

Additionally, the Rangers engage in environmental interpretation and educational displays at various events. They assist with scientific research projects, erect educational signage, and remove graffiti from natural rock formations and other park-owned infrastructures.

They also clear alien vegetation and provide visitor education at Boulders, where the penguins are located. Furthermore, they support the Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) visitor safety K9 unit.

To become a SANParks Honorary Ranger means being committed to making a difference in conserving and protecting our natural environment. To learn more about how you can be a part of this incredible opportunity, visit: www.sanparksvolunteers.org/volunteer/

While stuck in a frustrating traffic jam in Cape Town, commuter George Purchase chose to shift his perspective. Instead of dwelling on the delay, he focused on the breathtaking view of Table Mountain unfolding before him. Something he considered a privilege to experience!

Cape Town, South Africa (09 January 2025) – Being able to see the beauty of life and the world around us, even amongst the stress and chaos, is such a great way to approach life and live because, let’s face it, things aren’t always going to go the way we’d love them to.

There are just too many factors we can’t control: how people think and act, what antics your child will pull next, how a crowd will receive you or what time you’ll be scheduled for an urgent appointment on the other end of the line. You know this, and so do I.

One South African who inspired many people online to remember to see the beauty around them, even while stuck in standstill early morning traffic in Cape Town, was George Purchase.

While that very inconvenience is enough to drive any person looking at the clock tick by off the wall, George chose to look beyond the stationary vehicle in front of him (and the continuous line of many others ahead) and stretch his eyes just slightly above. To what, you may wonder? Why, the breathtaking marvel that happens to be one of South Africa’s iconic landmarks and one of the 7 Wonders of the World – Table Mountain!

Not only was George not fazed by the traffic or stressed about the time wasted in one spot, but he also considered himself privileged!

In the Facebook post shared on the Ek reis deur my pragtige land…. Suid-Afrika Facebook group he shared:

“I have to say that I’m privileged to get to be stuck in early morning traffic with such a great view, listening to my radio station of choice (Smile 90.4). I wonder how many of my fellow commuters are even aware of this privilege!”

What a marvellous way to live and an inspiring reminder to us all to stop and smell the roses even when things aren’t going our way at a given moment.

Inconveniences will happen, but with a simple pause and slight shift in perspective, you may just realise that there is beauty or at least something to appreciate in the delay you’re experiencing. Thanks, George!

A rescue operation unfolded on Table Mountain when a 40-year-old hiker slipped and injured his leg on the Platteklip Gorge trail. A team of dedicated Wilderness Search And Rescue members endured challenging terrain and demanding conditions to efficiently carry the injured man up the mountain, showcasing their expertise and unwavering commitment.

Cape Town, South Africa (04 December 2024) – In a daring rescue operation, Wilderness Search And Rescue (WSAR) teams swooped into action to save a hiker who had injured themselves on Table Mountain. The 40-year-old hiker slipped and injured their leg while descending the popular Platteklip Gorge trail.

Nearby rescue teams were participating in a technical scenario-based training from Tafelberg Road when the call-out was initiated. The training, aimed at preparing teams for the traditionally busy summer season, was suspended, and all rescuers were immediately dispatched to the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Lower Cable Station.

More than thirty rescuers, including City of Cape Town Law Enforcement officers, were ferried to the top of Table Mountain in the cable car. Once on top of the mountain, they swiftly made their way across to the top of the Platteklip Gorge and down to the injured hiker, WSAR reports.

Despite facing challenging terrain and limited daylight, the dedicated rescue team worked tirelessly to bring the injured hiker to safety.

He was assessed and treated before being placed into a rescue stretcher and carefully carried back up Table Mountain to the Upper Cable Station.

According to David Nel, a spokesperson for Wilderness Search And Rescue (WSAR), members quickly and correctly recognised that it would be faster to carry the injured hiker back up the trail and across to the Upper Cable Station.

“Rope hauling systems were used to slowly pull the stretched patient up the steep hiking trail. The patient was taken down the mountain in the cable car and carried to a waiting ambulance, before being driven to hospital.

“A special thank you to our teams of rescuers for their continued commitment to the outdoor communities of the Western Cape,” Nel said.

WSAR is a network of government agencies and civilian volunteer organisations that partner in search and rescue. To contact their emergency number, call 021 937 0300. To support their efforts, visit https://wsar.org.za/support-us/

Yesterday, we saw a massive mission to get 75 tourists safely down from Table Mountain in what has been deemed the biggest rescue in 64 years!

Table Mountain, South Africa (25 October 2024) — All boots were on the ground in Cape Town yesterday as part of what has been deemed the biggest Table Mountain rescue effort in 64 years! When 75 tourists found themselves in trouble due to haltered cable car mechanisms, heroes from all across the Cape joined forces to assist.

The chaos kickstarted after a fire sparked near the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway’s lower station. In response, cable operations were halted, which meant many distressed people were ready to get the heck down the mountain.

The 75 tourists had opted to hike down the Platteklip Gorge trail—one known to be challenging. Keep in mind, many in the group were not necessarily experienced hikers, but rather those making use of the cableway facilities.

Soon, the journey downwards became a journey upwards for the WSAR and several other rescue-focused teams to ensure that the tourists got back to base without ending up lost or injured.

With the help of a drone, the group was monitored carefully to ensure that SANParks rangers could leap to assistance when needed.

However, some of the tourists were fighting exhaustion and even injuries.

The effort soon became a fully co-ordinated rescue effort between troops of different groups including the Western Cape’s EMS services, Cape Nature, The Hikers Network, K9 Search and Rescue Association of South Africa, the NSRI, the Mountain Club of SA and Wilderness Search and Rescue among others.

Their efforts made all the difference in ensuring the tourists got down the mountain safely, while an injured Dutch tourist who had hurt her leg was rescued helicopter style.

Thanks to the multi-faceted forces joining, the rescue effort was a success!

“I’m certain that there are a few tired and weary visitors who saw more of our beautiful mountain than they had anticipated. We wish them all a speedy recovery,” David Nel, WSAR Spokesperson shared.

“We’re proud to respond alongside our peers from the various emergency services and we’re grateful to everyone who contributed to the successful rescue effort.”

Those inspired by the work of these hiker’s heroes can make a difference in the next mission by contributing to life-saving equipment for the WSAR. You can find their crowdfunding campaign here.

The wonder that is Table Mountain had another big milestone, celebrating 95 years since the first cableway started running. We look at the best moments celebrated on the mountain!

South Africa (07 October 2024) – Ninety-five years after the first visitors travelled to the top of Table Mountain in a wooden cable car, the world-famous Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company (TMACC) is still bustling and doing what it does best – providing visitors from near and far with a memory and a lasting experience.

The story thus far

In the years since its official opening (on 4 October 1929), the Cableway has undergone three major upgrades and regular maintenance. Today, it is a familiar feature of Cape Town’s famous flat-topped mountain, but not many people know how and why the project first got off the ground.

The Cableway’s history dates back to the 1870s when there were proposals to build a railway along the mountain’s slopes to make it easier for members of the public to reach the summit. Although the initial plan was to build a funicular railway, the development phase of the project was halted by the advent of World War I.

There was little movement until 1926, when Norwegian engineer Trygve Stromsoe proposed the construction of a cableway. This planted the seed for what we now know as the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway.

A host of icons, celebrities and royals are among the millions of people who have used the Cableway over the years.

Talk show host Oprah Winfrey, musician Sting, actor Famke Janssen, actor Arnold Schwarzenegger, Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe, and singer Kelly Rowland are just some of the famous names who have taken a ride to the top of the mountain.

“One of the lesser-known fun facts about the Cableway is that mountaineer Sir Edmund Hillary, the first person to summit Everest, took a cable car up Table Mountain soon after his historic expedition,” says Hercules. “Hillary is quoted as saying: ‘There is probably no more spectacular place in the world than Cape Town and Table Mountain at the tip of Africa.’”

“A lot has changed since that first trip in 1929, but the Cableway remains one of Cape Town’s biggest tourist attractions, transporting approximately a million visitors annually and counting,” says Hercules.

Good Things Guy has shared many heartwarming stories with the mountain as the backdrop. From David Bester, who lived on top of the mountain with his family when he was a toddler, returning years later to see the magnificent wonder to Tatjana Smith, who got engaged on top of the mountain. It has played host to epic rescues and incredible animal sightings and won countless awards.

Anniversary celebrations

A lot is being planned to commemorate this big milestone in the history of TMACC, she adds.

If it is your birthday this month – whether you turn 95 or not! – then you have a free return cable car ride waiting for you. The free ticket option is available to South Africans in the calendar month in which they celebrate their birthday (SA ID required), and all the information you need is available on the various TMACC social media channels.

“As we celebrate a remarkable 95 years of bringing breathtaking views and unforgettable experiences to local and international visitors, we are excited to announce a special treat. During October, South Africans can buy a 95th Anniversary Special ticket at the special price of R195 (SA ID required). This special is only available online and must be purchased before the visit as you cannot buy a ticket on the day of your visit,” says Hercules.

The TMACC team is also celebrating the milestone by giving back.

“The golf day on 8 November at the Atlantic Beach Golf Estate will raise funds for the Volunteer Wildfire Services and the Wilderness Search and Rescue, two crucial agencies that help to keep the mountain safe,” says Hercules.

Capetonians can also support this golf day by booking a four ball or sponsoring any of the holes on the day or donating towards the event.

“We want to thank everyone who has visited us over these 95 years for being such incredible friends and supporters. We could never have been such a successful tourism operator had it not been for our frontline staff, our support teams, our industry peers and partners, and our fans from near and far.

“Thank you for 95 incredible years. We look forward to many, many more,” says Hercules.

The snow fairy stopped by in Cape Town, coating Table Mountain in snow, much to the delight of locals who have been fighting a rollercoaster of winter woes.

Cape Town, South Africa (29 August 2024) — It’s no secret that this winter has been a ridiculously wet and gloomy battle for South Africans in Cape Town. With the past few months underpinned by stubborn rain clouds, insistent winds, wondering whether the sun would ever show its face again and seasonal depression that not even scrolling through the memories of Dezemba at the beach could shake, it’s been rough. And just when locals thought spring might be among us (deceived as we were by the wildflowers in bloom), one of the coldest weeks of the year hit. Except, this bout of cold didn’t come without bearing gifts; the snow fairly stopped by in the City!

Snow in South Africa in general is something special. But for Capetonians who can almost unanimously say that this winter had been no wonder, it was a surprise of an extra-special calibre.

The Snow Fairy Visits Table Mountain

Snow made its way to the Mother City as if it were Nature’s way of saying, “Here’s something pretty for your troubles.”

The star of the snow show was undoubtedly Table Mountain. As Table Mountain Aerial Cableway shared, that the natural icon of the Cape received a gorgeous layer of snow!

Snow More Bad Vibes

With the ensuing cold dips, comes the reminder to support those whose biggest woe is not whether their washing will dry, but the destitute who are most severely impacted.snow fairy

There are many charities that have made the winter bearable for both people and animals in need, but they are reliant on kindness from the community to keep on keeping on! TEARS Animal Rescue, The Cape of Good Hope SPCA, Haven Night Shelter, The Hope Exchange and Mdzananda Animal Clinic are just some of the many who serve the vulnerable.

You can find a complete list of charities that support destitute people here and those helping animals keep warm here.
