Crumbs, laughter and togetherness. A tea party thrown just for township grannies (and the grandpas who managed to sneak through) reminds us that sometimes the most important joys are the humble ones.

Johannesburg, South Africa (26 May 2025) — A tea party for township grannies recently celebrated the pillars of so many households in South Africa. Leaving behind a trail of happy crumbs, the tea party rightly gave the gogos their flowers of appreciation.

Organised by Charity Begins with Me (CBWM), the humble occasion was in no shortage of song, laughter or treats. Thanks to CBWM’s community, a variety of delicious treats were organised for the guests of honour, leaving behind more than enough for them to take home.

“They showed up, some in taxi’s, some in wheelchairs, and some on crutches,” shared CBWM’s Stephan Ferreira. “It wasn’t very fancy…It was chaotic. It was stressful. But it was perfect. Just for one afternoon, we tried to forget about the hard times and the suffering and we appreciated each other.”

With pots on the fire to supply hot water for the (many) cups of coffee, biscuits, cupcakes and muffins galore, the day brought smiles to many weathered faces. 150 grannies (and a few grandpas who managed to sneak into the party) were present.

Efforts like this are a reminder for all of us that sometimes the most important joys aren’t the flashy ones. They’re the simple ones in which one person says to another (or over a hundred in the case of this tea party) ‘I see you. I see your efforts. I see you carrying more than you show’.

Kindness at its finest! After Leigh Stefanski had her ID and Driver’s poached, an unsung hero named Rowena went out of their way to reunite the documents with her.

Cape Town, South Africa (19 May 2025) — There’s a stomach-dropping sensation that happens when you realise your ID isn’t in your wallet anymore. Now, consider your ID and driver’s licence are both missing in action. In fact, you don’t even have a clue where your wallet is! Few things can cure the realisation that your ID and driver’s were poached along with your wallet, but kindness is at the top of the list.

Recently, Leigh Stefanski told the story of how kindness prevailed at its finest in a situation like this, all without her knowing.

As Leigh shares, her partner had woken up to a Facebook message from someone he didn’t know. The message revealed that said person thought they were in possession of Leigh’s ID and driver’s licence, a vital document duo that Leigh didn’t even know had gone on the run.

“After marching off to get my wallet and looking in every plausible place, I succumbed to the realisation that my wallet was indeed lifted out of my handbag last night.”

Cue an unsung hero named Rowena Hamit, who works for SAPS.

While Leigh was none the wiser regarding her lost documents, Rowena had been on a mission, keeping Leigh’s found documents safe and tracking their person down.

An unnamed colleague of hers had spotted the discarded ID and driver’s licence near local flower stalls and thankfully took them to work (and to Rowena). Rowena’s shift ended early in the morning. Yet, despite how tired we’re sure she was, she still made the effort to leave the documents with a Parliament Control Officer where they’d be safe for collection. And, of course, going above and beyond to reach out to Leigh through her partner.

“Rowena was an absolute gift in my life [that day],” says Leigh. “Not just for the hours and headaches that she saved me in replacing my documents, but for the reminder that there are so many people who are good, and just trying to do right in this world. I am humbled and so deeply grateful.”

Last year, enough funds were raised to give 500 white canes to visually impaired people. Now, local Guide Dogs and their friends are preparing to one-up the impact with the second annual Give a Cane Campaign!

South Africa (16 May 2025) – Mtale Moodise is a gym enthusiast from Cosmo City. But, without his white cane to guide his way, he’d have a pretty tough time getting to and from his favourite place. The same goes for Ceala, who lost her vision suddenly during matric. Now a student studying Psychology at the University of Pretoria, Ceala’s white cane is an imperative tool to her freedom and academic success. These are just two of hundreds of stories in which white canes have made a difference for South Africans. Which is exactly why the Give a Cane campaign matters as much as it does.

Last year, the SA Guide-Dogs Association’s Give a Cane Campaign made its debut and raised enough funds to buy 500 white canes for the visually impaired. Following its success, the Guide Dogs team are amping up for a new year of impact; setting their sights on 1000 canes!

“A white cane is so much more than a mobility aid,” says Pieter van Niekerk, spokesperson for the SA Guide-Dogs Association and a white cane user himself. “It’s freedom, dignity, and the confidence to move through life independently.”

The white cane used by SA Guide-Dogs is not a regular walking stick. It’s actually a specialised mobility tool fitted with a rounded ball tip that’s designed to detect changes in terrain, so that the user can know the whether they’ve gone from sidewalk to tactile paving. It’s distinctive look also helps others in the area know that the user is visually impaired and not just, say elderly.

All of this in mind, it can mean a life with more freedom and help to someone who needs it.

Getting involved in the 2025 Give a Cane Campaign is easy peasy. You can raise funds solo or with your office or school. You can tackle a big run or organise a small walkathon, dress-up-a-thon or even a blind fold challenge day.

The point isn’t so much how you participate, it’s that you participate!

And, in good news for businesses, donations are eligible for Section 18A Tax Certificates.

The Give a Cane Campaign is running until 31 July, and you can find out more about contributing and donating, here.

A mother’s love, a devastating injustice and a hand-stitched heart sparked a movement. Martha: A Heartfelt South African Story is the film that will leave you changed.

South Africa (01 May 2025) – A short film is making waves across South Africa, not because it’s filled with drama or spectacle, but because it’s real. Deeply human. And overflowing with heart.

Martha: A Heartfelt South African Story (featured below) is a powerful new short documentary that invites viewers into a story shaped by love, injustice, resilience, and the quiet strength of one remarkable woman.

Directed by Erin Nel from Fell and Company and executive produced by Blake Dyason from CN&CO, the film tells the extraordinary true story of Martha Letsoalo, a domestic worker who became a second mother to Julie Hadley and her siblings during the apartheid era. In a time when society tried to keep people apart, the Hadley family embraced Martha and her children as their own.

But life would throw Martha a devastating curve.

Her son, Emanuel, was wrongfully imprisoned for a crime he didn’t commit. Martha spent her life savings trying to free him, determined to fight the injustice. Just weeks before his expected release, Emanuel tragically died in prison. It’s the kind of heartbreak that could destroy anyone but Martha chose to keep going. Still determined to work, still refusing charity, she carried on with grace and dignity. Julie, searching for a way to help that Martha would accept, sent her a small parcel of felt, some thread and a simple idea… hand-stitch hearts to sell.

Martha didn’t just stitch a few. She made 200.

And those 200 felt hearts became the foundation of Heartfelt, a social enterprise that now employs women in Martha’s community of Makapanstad. A business born not from profit but from purpose. From love. From legacy.

What started as a quiet act of kindness became something far bigger than anyone imagined.

Martha: A Heartfelt South African Story is a reminder of what the spirit of Ubuntu truly means: I am because we are. So press play, watch below and be reminded that even in the face of the greatest loss, something beautiful can still grow because when hearts are stitched with love, they don’t just heal… they uplift entire communities.

Two dog brothers found hope in an unexpected place: a forgotten stretch of the R513.

Cullinan, South Africa (30 April 2025) — Hope can be found where it is expected least. This was the case for two dog brothers left to fend for themselves on a forgotten stretch of the R513 who, thanks to the effort of different humans, have a real shot at a good life.

The Ridgeback and the Africanis dogs had become brothers but had no family to care for them. They had been left in an area that the Tshwane SPCA describes as something of a ‘dumping ground’ for dogs, and had become skin and bone, consequentially.

Despite attempts from different people who tried to catch the dog brothers, the roadside duo did not have enough trust in humans to go with any of them.

However, this all changed recently when a grey bakkie stopped; armed with family buckets (one with fried chicken and one with water) and patience.

After the dogs tucked into the meal as if it were their last, the bakkie Good Samaritans attempted to catch the two to no avail. Not giving up and determined to watch over the young pooches, they waited for help.

Said help first came in the form of NSPCA Inspector Veronica van Greunen. However, not even the inspector could catch the two. This, of course, didn’t mean giving up. Rather, it meant that it was time to call for back-up.

The Tshwane SPCA entered the chat; eventually succeeding in securing the two and taking them to the SPCA. This is likely the closest thing to a home the two had enjoyed in a while.

“At this moment, the two brothers are in the care of the Tshwane SPCA, where thy are receiving the love, nutrition, and medical attention they so desperately need,” the Tshwane SPCA said.

“With time, dedicated care, and patience, they will flourish and rediscover the joy they were so cruelly denied.”

The Tshwane SPCA emphasizes bringing a dog to them before even considering abandoning them on a road.

“Dumping an animal is an act of cruelty and betrayal—they are left confused, broken, waiting for someone who will never return.”

“The universe was definitely looking out for me that day, and I have the kindness of (mostly) strangers to thank.”

When a Cape Town artist drove off without her painting, heartwarming acts (and quite the wild goose chase) reunited the two.

Cape Town, South Africa (30 April 2025) — When a Cape Town artist parked her car in Woodstock recently, she had no idea that this critical moment would lead her to kindness in different forms and faces. And a wild goose chase for a painting.

Sera Holland had finished her meeting in Woodstock when she decided to run a few errands. Unbeknownst to her, at the time she zoomed off to the City, one of her painting passengers was missing—something she only realised nearly an hour later and a rather long way away from the suburb where the painting had last been seen.

“I had accidentally driven off whilst my huge almost-a-metre-high painting had been sitting leaning against my car,” Sera tells Good Things Guy, the panic in her words palpable.

As anyone who had just realised they forgot something very important would do, Sara immediately sped off back to Woodstock Main Road.

No painting was present, only the beginning of the goose chase.

A post shared by Sera (@seraholland)

Desperate to find her work, Sera went to the nearby shops to see if anyone had seen the painting. The good news about a large oil painting is that it’s pretty easy to spot.

“Everyone was especially kind and helpful,” Says Sera. “The CBD shop said they would check their cameras for me, and inside the fabric shop, there was a guy who was working in the back, who thought he saw someone he recognised pick up the painting.”

The fabric store’s unsung hero raced off to find the possible painting snatcher to no avail. Still, he kindly asked for Sera’s number in case he found it later.

A ‘deflated’ Sera went back to a local garage for a meal and a slice of serendipity. There, she ran into an artist friend who would go on to help her with the investigation—leading to yet another Good Samaritan, a car guard.

Though Sera didn’t know her friend and the car guard were putting the pieces together, she later found out that the car guard offered to help and contacted his boss for camera footage.

This camera footage led to the artists tracking down the painting’s picker—a lead at last!

Things, however, were not as simple as finding the mystery woman.

“Once we received the footage [the car guard] was able to track down the woman who had picked up the painting, but it turns out it had already been sold to a hairdresser, one who didn’t have a fixed address,” Sera explains.

The sleuths found the hairdresser, but the hairdresser had sold the painting to a customer. Surely, it ends there, right? Wrong. The customer sold it to someone else!

The next day, the final ‘customer’ had seemingly been found when the kind car guard sent Sera a video showcasing that he had found the painting at last.

All the while, the fabric store Good Samaritan had been threatening people with the police if the painting was not returned (a stretch, but a helpful one), committed to the cause as ever.

Sera got her painting back at long last, thanks to the people who had little reason to join her search, but she did so anyway. Not only that but the painting was recovered and undamaged (a marvel for thick oil paint that could’ve easily been squashed).

“The universe was definitely looking out for me that day, and I have the kindness of (mostly) strangers to thank,” Sera shares.

“Most people paint about living, but this painting has actually lived. I only wish I had placed a mini camera inside the painting so I could see its incredible journey.”

You can find Sera’s work here.

One simple act of kindness, one honest heart and one forgotten handbag… and just like that, South Africa is reminded that everyday heroes are still among us.

Johannesburg, South Africa (28 April 2025) – Sometimes, all it takes is one small moment to restore a bit of our faith in the goodness of people… and this story is exactly that.

South African icon PJ Powers – the legendary singer-songwriter affectionately known as “Thandeka” – has shared a beautiful story that is now making its way around social media for all the right reasons.

PJ Powers has been a celebrated figure in South African music for decades, famously blending pop and traditional sounds and using her platform to bring people together through difficult times. And now, she’s using her voice to highlight a different kind of hero.

It all started at Fourways Mall, where PJ’s sister, Priscilla Ann Dunlop, was doing a spot of shopping. In a flurry of errands, she accidentally left her handbag, packed with everything from her cellphone to her wallet, driver’s licence and ID card, in her trolley. It was only when she was nearly at the mall exit that she heard a commotion behind her. Running towards her, bag in hand, was Phumudzo Netshitomboni, a guard working for Fidelity Services Group. Shouting to get her attention, Phumudzo had spotted the forgotten handbag and didn’t hesitate for a second to sprint after her, making sure everything was safely returned.

PJ shared the heartfelt moment on her Facebook page, writing:

“I’m posting it cause it’s these simple acts of kindness and honesty we need to hear about. Phumudzo is a credit to his company and in my opinion deserves a pat on his back for doing his job with such enthusiasm.”

And it turns out the world agreed. PJ’s post has already garnered over 63,000 likes and sparked a flood of comments celebrating Phumudzo’s beautiful act of integrity:

“So encouraging and it is good news indeed to have some amongst who are still perfect human beings.”

“Makes my heart so happy ❤ you did good and are an incredible human Phumudzo.”

“Thanks you Phumudzo. But also to you Legend PJ Powers enkosi…. remember you could have kept quiet about it but you chose to give this young man his flowers. Also people like you who appreciate the good done must be also thanked… Phumudzo is a star.”

“Great! This is a great gesture and the spirit of ubuntu! Well done young man!”

Stories like this are a breath of fresh air! A reminder that while the world can sometimes feel heavy, there are still people choosing kindness, choosing honesty and going the extra mile simply because it’s the right thing to do.

Phumudzo’s quick thinking and genuine heart didn’t just save Priscilla from a massive headache, it gave all of us a story worth smiling about.

To Phumudzo: thank you for being a real-life good thing. Your actions prove that integrity and goodness are alive and well, stitched quietly into everyday moments. May your kindness ripple far beyond Fourways Mall and inspire many more just like you.

From handmade bunnies to grocery hampers (and many Easter Eggs in between) the Kingsmead College community and volunteers spent the recent holidays with kindness; supporting a myriad of organisations.

Johannesburg, South Africa (23 April 2025) — The recent Easter holidays were a time spent charitably for Kingsmead College volunteers and their larger community as people knitted, collected, and prepared all sorts of helpful and wholesome goodies for people in need.

The school’s ‘Share What You Can’ campaign united the its community in kindness and donated non-perishable food items. These were bundled and packed into grocery hampers; delivered all over Johannesburg to the school’s partner organisations.

In more creative pursuits, senior learners had been hard at work in creating handmade bunnies from knitted squares. These were then fitted with Easter eggs, and they went on to give several charities a little extra love over Easter festivities, including the Maletsatsi Foundation, CHOC, Kids Haven, and One Small Act of Kindness.

Children in the Neuropediatric ward at Charlotte Maxeke Hospital were also on the Kingsmead Easter bunny’s pit-stop list.

And, from the school’s Service@Home initiative—toiletry and stationary packs were also organised and delivered!

“Special thanks to Ms Wilkinson, Ms N, volunteers from Germany and the UK, and our students for volunteering and ensuring that we were able to distribute these much-needed items for Easter,” the school praised.

Thanks to everyone involved, Easter was made a little sweeter, warmer and kinder for many people in Jozi.

It’s easy to feel like kindness is fading, but then someone surprises you in the most unexpected way, and you realise it’s alive and well, just quietly doing its thing in a little shop in Fish Hoek.

Western Cape, South Africa (23 April 2025) – An anonymous Good Things Guy reader shared a story with so much kindness yet, so simple and beautiful, it might just shift the way you see the world around you.

On a regular Saturday, they popped into the Gatti factory shop on Main Road in Fish Hoek… just a quick stop for some cooldrinks.

But what happened next turned an ordinary errand into something unforgettable.

After choosing their drinks, they made their way to the counter to pay.

The cashier, a kind-faced gentleman, greeted them but instead of just ringing up the sale, he pulled out his phone and asked gently, “Is this you?”

On the screen was a photo of them standing at the same counter, taken weeks before. A bit confused, they nodded yes. That’s when the cashier reached under the till and handed them a R100 note.

Still trying to make sense of it all, the cashier played a video. It was CCTV footage from the 23rd of February – 55 days ago – showing the exact moment a R100 note slipped unnoticed from their bag as they walked away from the counter. The cashier had seen it, picked it up, and held onto it ever since, quietly hoping they’d come back.

No fuss. No fanfare. Just quiet integrity, patiently waiting.

It’s moments like these that remind us honesty isn’t lost. That there are still people who choose to do the right thing, even when no one is watching. This wasn’t just about a forgotten note, it was about trust, care and the kind of small gesture that speaks volumes.

The reader ended their message with just three words: “Absolutely incredible!”

And honestly… it really, truly is.

Maybe that’s what we all need a little more of: unexpected kindness, unspoken integrity and stories that leave us smiling long after they’ve ended.

There were a series of warm moments at the ice rink as skaters took on the opportunity to ease some challenges for those less fortunate.

Randburg, South Africa (10 April 2025) — Towards the end of March, a day at the ice rink was filled with warm moments as skaters (some who’d never even imagined gliding on ice before) took to the icy arena to have some fun. Through Kindness Like Confetti and Bet on Better. the ice skating day helped secure Dignity Bags, Groceries, and the opportunity for underprivileged kids to glide and giggle.

Thanks to those who sponsored skating tickets for underprivileged children, the ice-skating day at Northgate set the stage for many wonderful memories (and perhaps the next Naledi Hlalele).

In addition to the kids, participants and community hours learners enjoying the iciest form of fun also helped secure goods for Kindness Like Confetti’s Dignity Bags at the Skating for a Cause charity event.

A non-profit with chapters in Johannesburg and Cape Town, KLC deals in the clay of helping moms, their littlest ones and those who have survived abuse.

When they aren’t organising knit-wear for prem babies or supporting mothers with limited means, the team put together Dignity Bags for survivors.

These bags are filled with a host of essentials—blankets, underwear, toiletries and a pen and notebook to name a few.

In addition; participants also brought non-perishables so that hungry families could have some groceries that they desperately needed.

Three areas of need, one day to support them. And all it took was a few tickets and the willingness to fall on your bum.
