Welcome to “Good Things With Brent Lindeque”! New here? Well, we have a story for you… this is where it all began.

South Africa (22 May 2025) – If you’re new to Good Things with Brent Lindeque, welcome! This week’s episode is something a little different: a special introduction for anyone who’s just found the podcast (or the good news platform that started it all).

But it’s not “just” an origin story… it’s a reminder that small acts of kindness can ripple out and change the world.

You see, before there was a podcast, or a website, or the ‘Good Things Guy’ moniker, there was just one idea: try to make someone’s day a little bit better.

In 2014, Brent Lindeque was just another South African with a camera phone and a nomination in a drinking game that had gone viral for all the wrong reasons. Neknominations were about outdoing your friends in outrageous alcohol challenges but instead of downing drinks, Brent decided to flip the script. He drove into a Johannesburg intersection, armed with a R20 meal and gave it to a homeless man. He filmed it. Then he challenged others to do the same.

That one small moment, of kindness, humanity, and hope, caught fire.

Within days, the Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) initiative exploded globally. Brent’s nomination video went viral, with millions of views and copycat kindnesses popping up across the world. The movement sparked real, long-lasting change. It was featured everywhere from Carte Blanche, eNCA and 5FM, to international outlets like CNN, BBC, Mashable, Oprah Magazine… and even Ellen Degeneres gave it a shout-out.

From that spark, Good Things Guy was born, a platform dedicated to sharing uplifting stories, inspiring hope and reminding us all that good things are happening every single day, right here in South Africa and across the globe. Since then, Brent has been named a LeadSA Hero, selected as one of Africa’s most promising entrepreneurs, and featured as one of the Mail & Guardian’s Top 200 Young South Africans. In 2024 alone, he was voted number 5 in the Top South Africans of the Year and number 12 in the Top 100 Best South African Podcasts.

But those accolades aren’t what matter most. What matters is the impact. The RAK movement inspired millions of videos, helped create feeding schemes in Canada, the USA, and Ireland that still exist today, and reminded millions of people that they are not alone.

And now, in 2025, Good Things with Brent Lindeque has grown again… from audio to video. The podcast has become a full vidcast, connecting audiences in a more intimate way, sharing stories face-to-face, heart-to-heart.

This whole journey, from one small act of kindness to a global movement, is a good thing. It’s proof that we don’t need to be famous, rich, or powerful to make a difference. We just need to show up with a full heart and the courage to do something good.

So whether you’ve been here since day one or just stumbled upon us now, know this: you’re part of the good things family. And together, we can keep changing the narrative. One good story at a time.

Leo Parker, the brave little lion fighting one of the rarest conditions on Earth, has finally found his lifesaving match.

South Africa (24 April 2025) – “It’s a perfect match!”… and it couldn’t have come at a better time.

After months of uncertainty, late nights filled with prayers and tireless hope echoing through hospital hallways and Facebook updates, Andrew and Tarryn Parker finally shared the news we’ve all been holding our breath for: a perfect stem cell donor has been found for their baby boy, Leo.

And just like that, the world got a little brighter.

Leo Parker, who we introduced you to in March, is no ordinary baby. At just 8 months old, he’s endured more medical challenges than most adults will face in a lifetime. Born with MECOM-associated syndrome, a condition so rare it’s barely recognised in global medical circles, Leo’s tiny body has been bravely battling complete bone marrow failure.

The simplest way to explain it (in the words of his incredible mom, who’s also a doctor) is that Leo’s “bone factory” isn’t working. The parts are faulty, and as a result, it’s not producing red blood cells, white blood cells or platelets. That means no oxygen flow, no infection fighters, no way for wounds to heal. Leo has been relying on regular transfusions just to stay alive, while facing daily risks most of us couldn’t begin to imagine.

But now, that narrative is shifting… because Leo has a match.

In a Facebook post on 23 April, the Parkers wrote:

“After months of prayers, searching, and uncertainty… our hope has arrived. A perfect stem cell donor has been found for our precious son, Leo! We are overwhelmed with gratitude for each of you… you’ve played a part in this miracle.”

They’re right, it is a miracle. But it’s also a reflection of something bigger: a community rallying together, complete strangers swabbing their cheeks and registering with DKMS in the hopes of being someone’s second chance.

And Leo’s story isn’t just about medical science or matched DNA , t’s about courage. His nickname, “the little lion,” couldn’t be more fitting. His smile, despite everything, has lit up rooms and social media feeds, inspiring thousands to register and take action. His story has reminded us of the power we all hold, the power to literally save lives.

The journey isn’t over, in fact, the hardest part still lies ahead. But this? This is the moment everything changed. Leo now has a fighting chance, and that changes everything.

To the Parker family, your courage is contagious.

To Leo, the littlest warrior with the loudest roar, we’re all cheering you on.

And to every person who swabbed, shared, supported or simply held this family in their hearts… you didn’t just raise awareness. You helped save a life.

Let’s not stop here. There are still children out there waiting for their miracle. You can be someone’s match. Visit dkms-africa.org and be the reason hope rises again.

Because today, hope found its voice. And it roared.

Empathy in motion saw runners and rangers run side-by-side at this year’s ‘Run For Rangers’ challenge. Together their efforts earned over R600 000 that will help support hundreds of rangers in KwaZulu-Natal!

KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (25 October 2023) — An incredible display of empathy in motion saw people gather for a trail challenge like no other at the Babanango Game Reserve as the second-ever ‘Run For Rangers’ challenge got heart rates pumping.

Only in its second year, ‘Run For Rangers’ already has its place as a highlight on conservationist and ranger-respecting locals’ calendars. As the brainchild of former Hilton College pupil Harry Bailey (19), the event is also a powerful reminder of what young, selfless minds can achieve.

Against tough Big 5 terrain, the challenge saw runners and rangers run and walk side by side. Twelve rangers and seventeen official runners joined forces, including Hilton College pupils who were invited to keep the momentum of legacy.

It was an opportunity for the participants to put themselves in the rangers’ shoes in the most literal sense, which resulted in a deep sense of empathy not only for their gruelling work but also for the stretches of natural life under their watch.

Some nine participants even ran 100 km for the cause over a two-day period.

When the going got tough, spirit and solidarity came to the rescue as the running rangers sang so powerfully to raise morale, their voices echoed through the reserve.

All in all, this year’s Run For Rangers successfully raised much-needed funds that will help train and provide support to over 500 rangers in KwaZulu-Natal, to the tune of R600 000! Over and above this, it brought ranger support centre stage not just for South African rangers, but for the global ranger community.

The challenge came in partnership with Project Rhino and the Sport For Lives Movement.

As Ncedo Koyana, Director of Relationships at Sport For Lives touchingly shared, “Empathy is a concept often talked about but rarely explored deeply in our fast-paced world. Sport For Lives believes that stepping into someone else’s shoes, figuratively and sometimes quite literally, should be a way of life for all”.

Anyone considering giving up on a passion, this is for you!

After Ethelwynne van Eck had a stroke that left her painting hand and the right side of her body paralysed, she learnt a new art: determination. Soon, she was reunited with her lost love!

Johannesburg, South Africa (21 July, 2023)—When Ethelwynne van Eck had a stroke, she thought an artist’s worst fate had become her reality. Paralysis on the right side of her body meant that the painting hand she’d taken decades to train couldn’t work anymore. Her lifelong passion seemed like it would remain a lost love stuck in frames of the past—a heartbreaking experience for the oil painter who’d spent so much of her life dedicated to canvases.

That was in 2015. A year later, life changed again when Ethelwynne moved to a Care Centre. Little did she know that this move would reunite her with what she deemed a lost love.

After discovering that Ethelwynne was an artist, the Rand Aid Ron Smith Care Centre’s art group asked if she’d join them by taking on the role of tutor.

“Although initially reluctant, I went along and met the people. They welcomed me so graciously. However, I didn’t just want to tutor other people. I wanted to belong to the group as an artist and be one of them,” Ethelwynne recalls.

Still, Ethelwynne couldn’t say no to the art even if she couldn’t create it anymore. And as the weekly classes went on, inspiration was soon sketched back into her life.

“I took pencils and a sketchbook and started training myself to draw with my left hand. I began by sketching simple shapes and, within weeks, found that I could draw again! Encouraged by my drawing success, I decided to try painting in acrylics and watercolours.”

It wasn’t long until a corner of her room became an art studio where vibrant colour brought life to the space, bringing joy to all who passed by including the nursing staff.

This inspired Ethelwynne to paint them in vibrant colours that they loved most. Practice. Joy. Rinse and repeat. Soon those paintings inspired by others became a journey framed—which now dress up the Centre’s Woodlands wing.

Thanks to a reignited passion, determination and the people who inspired her art, Ethelywnne has been reunited with her lifelong love again.

“After seven years at RSCC, I have mastered the art of painting with my left hand and am so grateful that my love of and talent for creating works of art has been revitalised. I can confidently pursue my passion once again. I feel I have developed and grown as an artist and it is wonderful to be fully involved again, with the one thing that has been my lifelong passion.”—Ethelwynne.

Moral of the journey? Life’s canvas rips sometimes. The visions we have for our lives don’t always translate the way we thought. And sometimes the mess isn’t beautiful. Though these things may deter us, the unexpected splatters and rips can be painted over! Starting again is possible and determination is often the boldest stroke we make.

Deaf and hearing-impaired baristas at I Love Coffee almost had their aprons blown off recently thanks to an incredible gesture that left the coffee shop with a tip of R10 000!

Cape Town, South Africa (13 July, 2023) — Baristas and staff at a local coffee shop I Love Coffee almost had their aprons blown off recently thanks to an incredible gesture of unexpected kindness. The coffee shop—known for brewing not only top-tier coffee but community impact—couldn’t believe the generosity, sharing that sometimes kindness walks in unexpectedly.

I Love Coffee who are on a mission to make employment more accessible for the deaf community, are always grateful for support in the form of a coffee-loving visit. Every pop-in helps their journey toward inclusive employment as around 70% of their staff are hearing impaired.

However, coffee Samaritans stopped by for more than a cuppa on a special day in June, leaving I Love Coffee’s Gary Hopkins at a loss for words.

At the end of the work day, four men strolled in for a coffee meet. Gary tells Good Things Guy that they were the last customers of the day.

At the end of their meeting, the men casually asked for the bill before asking if they could add a donation. A R10 000 donation at that!

“We were all literally dumbstruck. I’m not sure what prompted the donation, but we think that they were moved by the video footage we show in store of our staff winning various barista and cooking competitions,” shares Gary.

“Of course, everyone was delighted and we are spending the money on new chefs jackets and uniforms.  We are in the process of opening our training academy so the timing was perfect and all I could manage to say was ‘Thank you!  Do you realise what a difference you are making to our organisation’?”

The men didn’t even tell the shop who they were until Gary asked.

Leaving a donation of R10 000 is no small change, but for these cafe-goers from Libra Walk Essential Services, it was a worthy why to support the cause. Better yet, the company even decided to open their own I Love Coffee cafe for their office which will employ even more people from the hearing impaired community!

While you might not have a tip of that magnitude to add, you can still show support for the I Love Coffee shop simply by enjoying their brew.

Bonus? You get to use South Africa’s 12th official language sign when you visit.

Or, if you’re looking for other social enterprises that serve treats and communities in Cape Town, check out some of our favourite picks.

Determined women, one sewing club and the desire to feed a community led to one of the happiest gardens around. Meet the Happy Fingers Community:

Karatara, South Africa (12 July, 2023) — What does it take to feed a community? People willing to give it a try! That was the first step for the Happy Fingers Community Garden Project which is now flourishing wonderfully in the Western Cape’s Karatara.

It all began when determined women part of a sewing club named Happy Fingers wanted to do something about food insecurity in their community, especially for the older members. After reaching out to sustainable food non-profit Green Hearted, their little vegetable garden soon became a spot of hope.

Thanks to help from Green Hearted (who support multiple gardens in Knysna), the women have learnt all the green thumb 101s and have been able to create peace of mind for community members. Thanks to these efforts, more people will know where their next meal is coming from as the women wish to supply vegetables to the area’s soup kitchen.

In the same breath, the project has cultivated a new sense of sustainable consciousness and agency for the green thumbs, reigniting purpose for many of its maturer participants.

The experience has also breathed a new youthful spirit into the team who bonded over sewing.

As one 67-year-old member shared, “I am 67 years old, but when this garden started I felt young and jumped into the garden!”

Green Hearted’s founder Kate Curtis couldn’t be more thrilled to see one of their many women-led projects flourish. As an organisation that began during one of the toughest times for food security in South Africa (the pandemic), the passing years have only seen its seeds of skill sharing and ecological education grow to new heights of impact.

As Estel Morris, another Happy Fingers member adds:

“I am very proud of the garden we have created…we aren’t struggling with our little garden.”

You can keep up with Green Hearted’s projects here.

Born with a rare Congenital Heart Defect, Baby Levi is already a survivor at just 5 months old. Wanting to give the little one and his family a better fighting chance, Levi’s grandfather put his heart into raising funds for Levi’s medical journey, and in less than a month, kind-hearted people have already rallied over R80 000!

Johannesburg, South Africa (12 July 2023) — Thanks to a dotting grandfather’s tireless battle to help his little grandson get the medical help he needs, Baby Levi’s journey is looking a lot more hopeful. In less than a month, the funds Dirk Brouwer rallied for baby Levi went from R20 000 to R104 000 all thanks to kind-hearted people who were moved by the family’s determination for their littlest member.

Baby Levi’s Heart Needs Extra Care

In his short life, little Brouwer has already been deemed a survivor. Baby Levi was born with a rare Congenital Heart Defect known as singular ventricle complex— a unique heart condition affecting only 0.005% of newborns. He had his first open-heart surgery at two weeks old.

Essentially, his condition means that instead of four working chambers, Levi only has one, placing strain on his delicate heart and lungs as oxygenated and deoxygenated blood mixes in his heart.

This means a long medical journey ahead for the little one and his family as his condition can’t be cured. However, with proper medical support, Levi has a very high chance of living a normal life.

So, Levi’s grandfather decided to take on the mission to raise as much financial support as possible to give Levi’s journey the best shot and to help the family’s financial strain lessen.

“We are immensely grateful to have had Levi with us for five months already. He is a God-given miracle who fills our hearts with immeasurable joy, happiness, and gratitude. This young, faithful family holds an incredibly special place in our hearts,” expressed Dirk.

Thanks to numerous parents, grandparents, anonymous Good Samaritans, South Africans and strangers from overseas, Dirk’s mission no longer seems impossible and Levi’s medical fundraiser is almost halfway to its target of R240 000!

You can find out more about Levi’s story and support his fight here.

Deciding to use his birthday to give others gifts of goodness, a community hero signed off on ‘Mission Party Pack’ and gifted hundreds of veggie party packs for kids in need and their families.

Johannesburg, South Africa (19 June, 2023) — Recently, Stephan Fereira made a unique request that had the internet wondering if he’d confused his grocery roster with his birthday wishlist. No mistake had been made; Stephan was on a mission to rally as many vegetables as possible in an effort to make his birthday an occasion where he could share these gifts with others.

From his dedicated experience to helping children in need as Charity Begins With Me’s founder, Stephan knew first-hand how much of a difference simple grocery items can make to households that often make do without them.

On his wishlist were potatoes, carrots, sweet potatoes, gem squash and onions; a one-of-a-kind birthday list in the sea of requests for new tech and fresh sneakers many privileged people are accustomed to associating with birthday goals.

The mission was to create 600 party packs made up of practical ingredients so that Stephan’s unofficial family—the kids he helps feed, educate and empower—could take them home to share with their own families.

Mission Party Pack Was a Success!

Over the weekend, Stephan signed off on mission party pack, sharing that over 600kgs of vegetables and some fruit had poured in from people all over South Africa who rallied behind his birthday wish.

A simple request — ‘Please buy me a potato for my birthday’—transformed into more than a celebration of Stephan’s birthday. As the little ones held their veggie packs, many locals realised the bigger celebration here was of community impact—something CBWM magnifies weekly.

Especially as we gear up for Mandela Day, stories of collective goodness going a long way become springboards of inspiration that we can all take notes from; especially when we fall into the trap of thinking a little can’t do a lot. People like Stephan and so many other heroes whose stories we share remind us each and every day that a lot comes from a little, and ‘a little’ is usually a lot bigger than we think it is.

Sorry Santa, this roof surprise outdid any sleigh landings!

Midrand, South Africa (12 June, 2023) — The SPCA Midrand got a special roof surprise recently. Although it felt like Christmas came early, no sleighs were involved. Instead, a big bunch of unexpected kindness came to the rescue of both the roof and the team.

The SPCA Midrand had been having an ordeal with their roof recently. Its clinic had seen some cracks and leaks and soon, dancing in the rain became an indoor affair. The buckets weren’t cutting it and even its kennel roofs were far from top shape, which meant that some animals couldn’t be sheltered when it rained.

Not to mention, a gaping hole in the roof came about after one unsuspecting morning saw a contractor crash into the reception area after a misstep on the roof’s boards (he’s okay). Wet animals, bucket-mayhem and now a massive hole in the roof, it was time for kindness to intervene.

For organisations like the SPCA, funding a roof repair is a big headache fleshed with a lot of planning. So, after the roof investigations were completed, the team waited with bated breath to see what the financial damage would be and whether they’d be able to make it work.

That’s when Christmas came early in the most special way.

“Before we could even open the quote, the email read that Helge and his wife Meryl would be donating ALL the work to us FREE of charge as part of their ongoing contribution towards Animal Welfare!”—SPCA Midrand.

The roof repairs were literally and figuratively on the house!

Thanks to the kindness of Speedy Roof Repairs’ owners, the SPCA Midrand got a repaired roof and kennels a new sunroof—because light should always shine in on unsung heroes—and other necessary maintenance.

The SPCA branch shared that they couldn’t have been more touched; especially because the Good Samaritans are already animal welfare supporters, contributing regular food donations to the branch.

“You have no idea how much this truly means to us and the very big impact you have made in the lives of our SPCA and the many animals that we serve and protect!”—SPCA Midrand.

The FlySafair R9 sale was as crazy as it was touching. From people finally being able to fly for the first time to family reunions made possible, here are the most heartwarming stories from the lucky winners!

South Africa (04 May 2023) — South Africans put their luck to the test yesterday, hoping to win flights cheaper than bottled water thanks to the R9 FlySafair lucky sale.

Financially, times are tough in our country, and initiatives like this can make a world of difference to people who can’t afford to be there for special moments, family members and reunions under traditional flight circumstances.

So, people glued themselves to their computer screens, dedicated patience to the cause and crossed their fingers and toes in hopes of grabbing one of the 50,000 R9 flights on offer.

As if it were the Amazing Race, the sale took place until the flights ran out, which meant accepted queue numbers had to move quickly (with only 10 minutes at hand) to find their flights and book them.

Not everyone could be a winner, but for those who are, those tuckshop-priced flights meant someone’s first time on an aeroplane, a sped-up reunion with family and friends for someone else or a dream come true for their loved ones, and we think that’s pretty awesome!
