Leo Parker, the brave little lion fighting one of the rarest conditions on Earth, has finally found his lifesaving match.

South Africa (24 April 2025) – “It’s a perfect match!”… and it couldn’t have come at a better time.

After months of uncertainty, late nights filled with prayers and tireless hope echoing through hospital hallways and Facebook updates, Andrew and Tarryn Parker finally shared the news we’ve all been holding our breath for: a perfect stem cell donor has been found for their baby boy, Leo.

And just like that, the world got a little brighter.

Leo Parker, who we introduced you to in March, is no ordinary baby. At just 8 months old, he’s endured more medical challenges than most adults will face in a lifetime. Born with MECOM-associated syndrome, a condition so rare it’s barely recognised in global medical circles, Leo’s tiny body has been bravely battling complete bone marrow failure.

The simplest way to explain it (in the words of his incredible mom, who’s also a doctor) is that Leo’s “bone factory” isn’t working. The parts are faulty, and as a result, it’s not producing red blood cells, white blood cells or platelets. That means no oxygen flow, no infection fighters, no way for wounds to heal. Leo has been relying on regular transfusions just to stay alive, while facing daily risks most of us couldn’t begin to imagine.

But now, that narrative is shifting… because Leo has a match.

In a Facebook post on 23 April, the Parkers wrote:

“After months of prayers, searching, and uncertainty… our hope has arrived. A perfect stem cell donor has been found for our precious son, Leo! We are overwhelmed with gratitude for each of you… you’ve played a part in this miracle.”

They’re right, it is a miracle. But it’s also a reflection of something bigger: a community rallying together, complete strangers swabbing their cheeks and registering with DKMS in the hopes of being someone’s second chance.

And Leo’s story isn’t just about medical science or matched DNA , t’s about courage. His nickname, “the little lion,” couldn’t be more fitting. His smile, despite everything, has lit up rooms and social media feeds, inspiring thousands to register and take action. His story has reminded us of the power we all hold, the power to literally save lives.

The journey isn’t over, in fact, the hardest part still lies ahead. But this? This is the moment everything changed. Leo now has a fighting chance, and that changes everything.

To the Parker family, your courage is contagious.

To Leo, the littlest warrior with the loudest roar, we’re all cheering you on.

And to every person who swabbed, shared, supported or simply held this family in their hearts… you didn’t just raise awareness. You helped save a life.

Let’s not stop here. There are still children out there waiting for their miracle. You can be someone’s match. Visit dkms-africa.org and be the reason hope rises again.

Because today, hope found its voice. And it roared.

The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race is at a stressful stretch thanks to hectic weather and postponements. But, South African skipper Ryan Gibson is teaching a lesson in leadership despite the looming storm!

spar hero of the week

Global (23 January 2024) — Yatchies, part of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, have met a stressful stretch of the ocean’s fiercest challenge—which is saying a lot, considering this is known as one of the toughest endurance challenges on the planet. However, South African skipper Ryan Gibson is keeping a cool head and teaching a lesson in staying calm despite the looming storm!

The Clipper Race has hundreds of non-professional crew mates participating. So far, they have completed over 17,000 nautical miles since getting underway from Portsmouth, which places a lot of responsibility on any skipper’s shoulders.

However, at this point of the race, challenges have escalated following a serious storm that has disrupted fleet plans for the eleven racing yachts.

A tropical cyclone heading towards the Queensland coast means that all eleven racing yachts need to put their plans on hold; opting instead to make sure their boats are fully prepared for any storm-related worries ahead.

Ryan (who led the team to a victory leg of the race when his crew ‘Dare to Lead’ arrived in his home town of Cape Town) has at present, embodied the calm of the storm; taking on a cool-headed approach as he prepares to lead his team through the intimidating weather.

No stranger to extreme conditions as a skipper—Ryan has before sailed to remote ports in Svalbard in the Arctic and Alaska and crossed the Atlantic five times—he’s put all his focus on preparing the crew and the boat’s safety.

“We have spent the past day preparing Dare to Lead for the cyclone. Making sure the boat is safe and secure, doubling up lines and getting everything below deck. Race Crew have joined myself and Charlie in getting everything backed up for the storm, it’s been great to have their help,” he shared.

“And now we just have to be on standby and get ready for the race in a bit of a different way!” he adds as if the weather worries are simply a small hiccup.

‘Dare to Lead’ has never been a more literal title than now, but Ryan’s approach—leading from a place of calmness and preparing rather than panicking, has breathed reassurance into the journey ahead.

The cyclone is projected to make landfall on the 24th of January according to Clipper Race Director Mark Light. But, he has noted that there is a plan in place for a four-day delay that will depart from Airlie Beach.

South Africa continues to root for Ryan, ‘Dare to Lead’ and all the South Africans part of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race!

The Joburg activist who is trying to track down the abused woman she saved has written an open response to the CEO of MTN to make emergency services better, to change the face of abuse support in South Africa!

Pam Green, the Joburg angel, created #SecondChances just over a year ago after she posted a photograph on Social Media, asking anyone to help with a job for a homeless man, this post went viral, and Pam took an opportunity by the horns!

Her goal was to create social upliftment via social media, she uses social media to bring the country’s attention to individuals in need. These individuals go to #SecondChances through recommendations, direct requests, and more frequently, by being tagged on social media platforms.

SEE ALSO: Joburg woman who helped an abused wife is taking on emergency services!

Green is now using social media again… this time to highlight her hope in humanity after she was involved in a tragic experience on the side of the road, involving a woman being abused by her husband, and various forms of emergency services being unresponsive.

Her post went viral and started a massively important online conversation.

“Thank you to each and every single person who read and shared my post. I know it was long and I never in my wildest dreams expected it to go viral?”

Green says she didn’t realise that she was doing something so extraordinary, although she is the person who left her good paying corporate job to help change people’s lives for the better through her Non-Profit organisation ‘Second Chances’.

“But it did, and I’m grateful. But as my post said, I am also traumatized. I’m also exhausted and this lack of sleep is not helping at all.”

Green has been searching for the woman who was abused since Friday, she has posted all over social media but had no luck in tracking her down. The hospital will not give her any information, her phone is off and hasn’t been on since Friday.

They currently have private investigators looking into it and Green is meeting with a brigadier from the South African Police Services today, in the hopes they will come on board to help try trace her.

Meanwhile the post was even seen by MTN CEO Mteto Nyati who responded to Green personally:

“As CEO of MTN South Africa I am shocked to read about your poor experience with us. I apologize to you for this lapse in service. We will use this experience as a learning opportunity to make sure that no other human being goes through it. My apologies once again. I have already initiated an investigation into this matter. Based on our findings, we will take the necessary disciplinary action. The agent involved will be suspended immediately.”

MTN CEO

But Green and many online commentators agree that the formal response from the MTN CEO doesn’t actually help either.

“My poor experience shouldn’t be a shock, hundreds of comments on my post are of people who have had the same experiences. You should be used to this. And this is obviously not a lapse in service but rather a real problem that needs serious attention.”

“You commit to suspending or dismissing the agents responsible go immediately. This is NOT what I want. I repeat, do NOT DO THIS!”

“Dismissing these HUMANS will not solve the problem, it will only add more people in the UIF queue, more hungry children, and even more resentment and stress.”

Green goes on to explain that she knows all too well how hard it is to find a paying job. The activist currently has 5 different jobs just to try pay for necessities.

“I know all too well how the pain of having to tell my child that even though he is still hungry, I don’t have money for more food.”

“But I don’t just come with criticism, I come with a solution!”

Green believes that everything happens for a reason, and nothing is coincidence. She truly believes that this is all part of a bigger picture.

You need just look at these details: the timeline, a mere number of days until the 16 days of activism begins. The victim, an abused woman, me, the founder of an organisation called Second Chances, MTN, the biggest network in the country.

So this is her open response to MTN and Mr Nyati:

“I appreciate your personal commitment to making this right.”

“I implore you, as the biggest cellular network, to create a unique and central emergency telephone line solely for victims of abuse.

“I implore you to collaborate with me on this to create a specialised training programme in which call centre agents are properly trained to deal with emergency calls from abuse victims.”

“I implore you to not get rid of the problem, but to be the solution to bring back our humanity”

Let this woman’s abuse story be remembered as the story that changed the face of abuse support in SA!

A fake news report claiming that two people were arrested in Tembisa for being in possession of over 80,000 ballot papers pre-marked in favour of the ANC is being investigated by the SAPS.

Tembisa, South Africa – The South African websites which published the article titled “Two arrested over 80,000 ballot papers already marked as ANC votes” on 1 August are in big trouble.

3 separate Facebook Pages (Gossip Mill Mzanzi, Mzansi Live & African News Updates ) dominated social media space with the fake news story.

The story, which was shared thousands of times on Facebook cited an unnamed police officer as a source of the news, and little else. The article also attracted the attention of the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC), which slated the fake report.

“Statements made yesterday on fake news websites which claimed people had been arrested with large quantities of ballot papers already marked for a specific party are a hoax,” said the IEC.

“Despite the photograph of the marked ballots clearly being a national ballot paper for the 2014 National and Provincial Elections, this destructive story spread and was also picked up by some media organisations.”

My BroadBand reported that The Electoral Commission reminded voters and the media that it is an offence in terms of Section 69 of the Municipal Electoral Act for anyone to make intentionally false statements with the intention of disrupting or influencing an election.

“A case has been opened with the SA Police Service to investigate the source of the false reports and for referral for prosecution.”

A week ago one of the single largest charity fundraising efforts took place in Jo’burg. It also caused the slaktivsts to get really angry… and thats about it.

The CEO Sleepout is an international concept that has raised over USD30million (thats over R400 million) over the last 10 years.

This was the second time in as many years South African CEO’s took time, effort, corporate willingness, and most importantly funds, yes cash … and rallied around the wooden fire’s of cold Jhb streets as one to discuss common areas of concern that affect the complex corporate citizenry of a country as troubled as South Africa.

Let’s be clear.

It wasn’t designed to be a Bear Grylls styled immersion into Hillbrow’s underbelly, nor were these senior executives expected to fend for themselves on the street eating cockroaches and drinking piss.

As with any mass participation event the parameters were clearly defined for both comfort, appeal and safety.

The end-game was always designed to be conversation, comprehension. compassion and a healthy dollop of good old fashioned fund-raising. Oh, and lets not forget the tangible and direct benefit to the Jozi homeless of all goods, equipment and most of the clothing taken onto the Nelson Mandela bridge, over and above the money raised.

Anyone working in sponsorship like me will vouch for just how impressive a task this actually is.

Times are tough, corporate spending is being carefully monitored, and donor fatigue is real.

To successfully deliver a R35 million fund raising activity that is both independently audited and governed is no mean feat and needs every ounce of recognition for its herculean efforts.

South Africa should have got behind it like the other countries around the globe using the exact same model of engagement and assessment of the overall success of this unique initiative.

But the reality of apathetic, opinionated and uninformed social media kicked off and the South African slacktivists pulled in.

Social media accounts fired up, and people with very little context, background or real understanding of much of the cause or its’s background structure weighed in heavily with opinions, arguments, anger and attitude by the bucket load. Opinions were formed from the last 3 tweets on timelines, and the armchair activists got stuck in for all the wrong reasons.

The arguments flew thick and fast from many directions but the themes were remarkably similar and included:

1) The CEO’s are humiliating the homeless, and should subject themselves to the real anguish of a real street facing the associate dangers. This amounts to Poverty Porn.

A Great argument if you knew nothing about the structure of the actual foundation, or event. As already stated firstly the SleepOut is a metaphorical extension to create a sense of camaraderie and purpose, not an immersive experience.

If this statement were to be considered seriously we should all immediately stop shaving our heads for the CANSA Shave-A-Thon cause as this is clearly insulting to Cancer survivors everywhere, and rather subject ourselves to ChemoTherapy and Radiation treatment until our hair falls out in solidarity?

2) The homeless are not benefitting, this is humiliating for them and we are different to other countries.

The assumption that being homeless in country A is better / worse than country B is as arrogant as it is insulting.

Lost in this impulsive 140 character war (because it involved a knowledge of the actual initiative) was the long term charitable support, significant Salvation Army integration, additional sideline fundraising initiatives, heightened awareness of the homeless plight, direct benefit of donations of all bridge infrastructure and clothing, soup kitchens etc.

The list that most couldn’t be bothered to research is both long, real and sustained over a lengthy period.

3) Real charity does not need PR.

Yes! And No! Get real!

The corporate world has every right to expect exposure for donating funds over and above their existing CSI strategic initiatives… Newsflash, thats how the world works, maybe not in armchair suburbia but then again the twitter trolls were not actually contributing any funds, or good to the cause.

Having said that ever single CEO I heard, spoke to or interacted with was 100% there primarily for the cause and content, not for the marketing and PR.

The desire and need to make a difference on a long term sustainable basis was the common theme around the fires, but sadly none of that was snap chatted, or posted on twitter. I guess it didn’t make for good angry arguments.

And then, as quickly as the insults were flying, the conversation moved on.

As angry as everyone was.

As vocal as the arguments were.

As much as the hashtag was being flung left, right and centre by every thought leader, opinionated follower, troll or otherwise… the social media community found it’s next plaything.

So to be clear amongst all the negativity and nay-saying , the single constant is that R35 million was still raised!

Yes, R35 million has been secured and will be distributed, and effectively change thousands, maybe tens of thousands of lives as a result.

Then I checked the timelines of the angry slakctivists.

The people who were baying for the blood of the CEO’s and anyone involved. The ones that jumped to conclusions faster than that could pummel their keyboards.

And guess what.

While every slacktivist was shouting from the rafters, pummelling their anguished chests in disbelief at the insensitivity of it all, and taking to the tweets to angrily… blogging… two, maybe three times a day, nothing else has actually been physically effected, implemented, discussed or even debated.

I checked again as maybe i missed it.

Nope! No-one! Not one! Nothing!

Not one of the angry mob created a movement – hell no one has even started a hashtag!

No one pro-actively commenced a real (non-antagonistic) conversation with a corporate CEO.

Zero Rand’s have been raised in the last week from the armchairs of suburbia and Twitterville.

And then, as quickly as it started, the slacktivist conversations moved on to the next big thing.

The next fight. The next reason to exist. And be important. It’s that obvious and sad. Like bored ADD kids, they found the next shiny toy and all pounced on that.

And thats exactly the irony of the era of the armchair activist.

We live in a country where the biggest danger is doing nothing, where our problems are real, poverty is a way of life and unemployment is the highest in the world.

There is absolutely no good that could come from the CEO Sleepout NOT happening, and every single fund raising activity that offers hope to the disenfranchised should be embraced not embargoed.

God knows R35 million and a whole bunch of corporate goodwill will go a lot further to helping start to mend the social fabric of a country like ours than some angry tweets and a few blogs.

Almost a year ago, Netflorist gave Brent Lindeque 67 cakes to hand out, to randomly share kindness.

He gave to kids in squatter camps, firemen who keep us safe, workers laying new pipes & even a few ladies waiting for their taxis home.

But none of them compared to Lilly, who stole his heart & in one split second, reminded him why being kind mattered so much.

The story is a simple one but a reminder to us all.

“I slowly approached the intersection where this broken, weathered, warn out woman stands day in & day out, hoping that the light would turn red so I could hand her a piece of cake.”

It eventually did, but he could see frustration in a lady in his rearview mirror, waving her hands & yelling profanities because of his slow pace.

Brent made a quick decision to not just pass the cake through the window but get out of his car… he handed her the cake & she hugged him.

“The cake didn’t matter… I could see in her eyes that the acknowledgement was what she needed.”

“Too many people look the other way.”

He got back in his car & the angry lady behind him hooted to apologise & then started rummaging through her things to give Lilly something too.

That moment, that single moment had inspired someone to do something different, to see someone different. To help someone different.

He drove away but all he could think about was the way Lilly had touched him…

“It must be so soul-wrenching for people to look past you everyday.”

“All she needed was a little recognition.”

He couldn’t help himself. He went back, parked his car & sat with Lily, on the pavement in peak hour traffic…

“And for a moment it didn’t matter where we were, or what we did for a living. We laughed, we shared stories & we ate cake.”

“Lilly is just a person, like all of us & we may have our differences but deep down we’re all the same. We’re in this together & the only way we’ll get through this is together…”

11070092_873850512650714_9139921051359825839_o

Brent posted the story on his personal Facebook which connected him to Abbie Mcdonald, the lady who was in the car behind him.

“Well done!!! Really awesome!! And please forgive my impatience…I was the rude woman in the black Audio who was going crazy because you weren’t driving when the light was green….so embarrassed once I saw why… you were doing a random act of kindness! God Bless you x”

Almost a year later and Abbie, who has been helping Lilly ever since, wrote to GoodThingsGuy to update us on Lilly.

“Hi Brent…remember me??

I was the angry driver turned good samaritan the day I saw you stop your car to give the homeless old lady ”Lilly” some food… just wanted to let you know that I just passed her now on her corner… Main Road & R55 to give her some food and she was in high spirits.

She told me that she will be moving to Cape Town as a Portuguese man has given her money and a job as a filing clerk in Cape Town!!!

How awesome is that?? She was beaming with joy… just thought you would like to know about your old friend Lilly.

There is always hope.”

Thank you for the update Abbie, we are so happy that the community has come together to assist our friend Lilly.

Over R350 000 has been raised for Darryn August, a 27-year-old man who was stabbed and thrown from a train by robbers after coming to the defence of a pregnant woman on his carriage.

Darryn’s friend Nadine Van Eeeden contacted GoodThingsGuy to promote a crowdfunding campaign created by Graeme Dale Kuys… his pledge is to do an “Everest Ride” to raise funds for Darryn’s rehabilitation, and initially hoped to raise R50 000 via Everest For August.

“We want to raise funds to assist him in his recovery and to show support for his bravery. What better way than to spend 15 hours riding a bicycle up and down a mountain. All are welcome to join in for a picnic or even to do some cycling,” Kuys said on Everest for August.

GoodThingsGuy reported on the story on Saturday with the fund starting at R10 000. 24 hours later the article had been read over 200 000 times and the fund had raised over R250 000 and gone international, with many from around the world pledging in US dollars.

August, originally from Athlone, was on his way to Somerset West last Monday where he works as a facilitator and teaches homeless children.

He and four other commuters were in a carriage when nine men boarded and robbed the passengers near Firgrove station. Darryn told a cousin that a heavily pregnant woman was among those being terrorised.

His brother Bernard told News sites that Darryn tried to talk the robbers out of it.

“It’s not in his nature to stand back and do nothing. If he sees something bad going down, he would always step in,” he said.

“But when he tried to intervene, one of the guys hit him with a crowbar. He tried to get up but he was stabbed in the head with a knife,” he said. “Darryn lost consciousness for a few minutes and when he came to, he was being tossed out of the train.”

The 27-year-old hit a tree before he landed, breaking his spine.

While the robbers had taken his iPad, ID and some money, they hadn’t seen his cellphone in a side pocket of his backpack.

“As he lay there, he phoned emergency services before he passed out. He was found still lying there three hours later by a maintenance worker who also phoned for assistance.”

Darryn also suffered two collapsed lungs but fortunately escaped without any brain damage, Bernard said. He underwent three-hour spinal surgery on Thursday, but the prognosis remains bleak.

“We were told he has a zero chance of using his legs again. He is currently still drowsy because of the morphine, but we are here for him. Recovery is possible. God will make the final decision.”

Well known News24 journalist, Jennifer Sanasie, also got to sit down with Darren in an incredible interview. Watch the video via her Twitter account below.

If the name Chris Crocker doesn’t ring a bell, that’s because you’ve probably heard of his nickname instead: the “Leave Britney Spears Alone” guy. Yup – we’re talking about the dude who became Internet famous when passionately defended Spears back in 2007 (it was not a great year for Queen Britney).

Still have no clue who we’re referring to? Then feast your eyes on this glorious piece of virtual history:

While the above video may act as a time machine, we have to remember: That was nine whole years ago. So, what does Crocker look like now? And, more importantly, does he still love Britney Spears?

The answer to our first question:

While we’re super happy to hear that Chris’ love for Britney has not died, knowing that he’s never met her is a bit of a letdown. To explain, Crocker just posted this video on Twitter:

Following his “Leave Britney Alone” success, Chris went on to become, according to this Twitter bio, a singer and comedian. He’s also super inspirational.

Since many people have rediscovered Chris Crocker as of late, he’s been getting a ton of “Chris Crocker has gotten hot” comments. However, he wants his followers to know that “being hot is a state of mind. Inner confidence means way more than a million people affirming your ‘hotness’. Thanks for the recent love. Truly. But just know: You should always let yourself feel attractive. Not just when society says you are.”

It’s official. We love Chris Crocker just as much as we did back in 2007. (And we truly hope he one day gets to meet Britney Spears, who we’re sure would love him just as much as we do.)
