A cart horse’s life has taken a turn for the better after being found by a Cart Horse Protection Association patroller, ensuring the poor horse, now named Spikey, never knows pain again.

Cape Town, South Africa (14 May 2025) – One cart horse who had previously been subjected to ill-treatment at the hands of heartless owners has finally been set free from the pain of it all.

In March, the Cart Horse Protection Association (CHPA) received a heartbreaking video of two horses in a cart being beaten.

“We had no details about these horses at all, as they are unregistered, but we continued to search for them,” CHPA explained.

The Association continued to receive complaints about one of the two horses, Tolliekop.

“This morning (13 May), Duane was patrolling and found Tolliekop being ridden bareback. We finally found him, thank the heavens.”

The horse has since been renamed and given his rescuer’s nickname, “Spikey”. He is now on the road to recovery and has far more peaceful days ahead at the CHPA’s Recovery and Rehabilitation Centre.

“Spikey is tired, but knows he is now safe with us.  He will never work in a cart ever again.

“We will continue to look for the other horse in the cart,” CHPA assured.

CHPA can only rescue horses like Spikey with the public’s support. To make a donation visit their website or email fund@carthorse.org.za.
