Jessie the Staffie has been awarded an Animal Hero Award by the Boksburg SPCA for her efforts in saving her companion Chucky from drowning.
Johannesburg, South Africa (21 April 2021) – Last week, we reported the harrowing rescue by Jessie the Staffie, pulling her 13-year-old Toy Pomeranian companion from the swimming pool. The story left many breathless as they watched the 34-minute rescue.
Byron and Melissa Thanarayen learned that their Staffie Jessie saved their Toy Pomeranian Chucky from drowning after viewing their CCTV footage to understand why Chucky was wet. As they watched the footage playback, they sat in stunned shock.
Chucky had slipped into the pool and spent 34-minutes trying to get out all the while Jessie watched on and attempted to pull Chucky out every time he came near the side of the pool. Eventually, Jessie got a good grip of Chucky and hoisted him out of the pool.
Byron and Melissa shared the harrowing footage on Facebook, and it went viral with thousands of people hailing Jessie as a hero.
Now the Boksburg SPCA have joined in and awarded Jessie with a heroes award for her efforts to save her companion.

JESSIE also received a fabulous hamper full of goodies & treats and Chucky was handed a ‘Pamper Day’ voucher from The Doggy Parlour … we reckon he’s earned it!
Byron & Melissa adopted JESSIE from the Boksburg SPCA 5 years ago. Byron tells us that JESSIE – an absolute delight of a dog by the way – had been adopted but after a few days returned to the SPCA as she was not getting on with the family’s other dogs. That’s when Byron & Melissa came in and immediately fell in love with JESSIE & adopted her – she fitted into their family beautifully & had no issue with their other dogs.
