Far too many kids in the Eastern Cape are born into challenging circumstances that place them in a very disadvantaged position. Jono Kruger has made it his personal mission to support a cause that inspires them to learn, play, and gain the skills and motivation needed for success.

Mdantsane, South Africa (29 May 2025) – A significant percentage of youngsters in the Eastern Cape achieve poor results in language and mathematics, do not have access to sports equipment and have experienced some form of trauma or abuse.

It is this alarming and unfair reality, which threatens the potential and prosperity of many youth in a single province, that has inspired Jono Kruger to not only co-found Edu-Sport in East London but also support the cause in just about every way possible.

Edu-Sport is a youth empowerment organisation that provides education and sport to those who need it most. Through its Cubs Rugby Learning Academy, it provides educational and sporting opportunities to young children in the Mdantsane community of the Eastern Cape.

The academy’s primary goal is to provide a hub of excellence to children who could never afford the experience.

The Cub’s programme, in particular, is designed to ensure that the challenges these children face are addressed early on in their lives, while providing opportunities and a safe space for children to learn, play and grow.

To further fuel the initiative’s reach and impact, Jono will be running the ultimate human race, the Comrades Marathon, to raise critical funds for this life-changing work.

“We see Cubs players developing the passion, skills, knowledge, and motivation to become successful adults.

“Funds raised will contribute to the education, coaching and nutrition of the Cubs participants,” Jono says.

Every step Jono takes from the moment that the starting pistol goes off will be for the future generation.

Pledges or donations can be made on Jono’s crowdfunding campaign on Sport for Lives.

A 74-year-old hiker trapped in the remote and not-to-be-reckoned-with Elands River Mouth was rescued against every odd that made for one of the most trying and rewarding rescues.

Eastern Cape, South Africa (28 May 2025) — Against every odd, a 74-year-old senior hiker made it out of a remote gorge in the Eastern Cape thanks to a team who took a risk to save a life.

Last month, the senior hiker had taken a fall upstream of the Elands River Mouth, Grootkrans. She had fallen and injured herself hours before she could get in touch with help. However, this would be no ordinary rescue.

When NSRI Station Commander Lodewyk Van Rensburg got the call, he immediately knew it would be tough. Getting to the Elands River Mouth is its own mission, given the limited access by road. Once you do manage to get there, you’re met with a gorge boasting steep and sharp cliffs, not to mention a surf even the most ambitious water warriors avoid. Winds are also tough, and on a bad day, fog sets stubbornly, as was the case on the day of the rescue. Not to mention, nighttime was nearing.

All of these factors betted against the hiker’s survival, and all were present the day she needed help. However, the NSRI Oyster Bay team braved it all to pull off the unthinkable, bringing her home.

According to Lodewyk, winds were blowing at 30 knots while the sea climbed to 4 metres. No helicopter support was avaliable to the rescuers, so all they could rely on was their rescue craft and their courage.

“Luckily, we caught water going in,” Lodewyk shares of how the rescuers manager to get into the gorge via crossing a sandbank.

In the gorge, the team located the fallen hiker and had to swim her toward the rescue vessel using a backboard. This, because no paramedics could accompany the rescue team given the tough terrain that was decided not to be conducive for carrying gear.

Just when things were looking up, a new issue arose that made exiting its own challenge, the boat had gotten stuck on the sandbank, prohibiting a swift goodbye to the gorge.

“We stood there for 15 minutes. I asked the crew how they felt, and they said, ‘It’s now’, recalls Lodewyk. The team timed their run between wave swells to catch the right wave and get out. “The second wave broke underneath the boat. We only just made it.”

Hope was finally tangible again as the vessel made its way 12 nautical miles to shore.

At around 9pm, the rescue of a lifetime came to its end. With landing lights set up by Ian Gray of the NSRI’s Regional Operations Support Committee, light quite literally shone at the end of the tunnel.

The hiker was suspected to have spinal injuries and hints of hypothermia. However, her chances of survival were hugely influenced by the work of the brave people who risked their own safety that day.

“To be quite honest, I think the risk that we took was very high,” Lodewyk said of heading out into the gorge. “But when the doctor told us that if we hadn’t taken her out that night, she may not have made it — it kind of changed the whole perspective.”

This rescue is considered one of the most demanding rescue operations in recent times for NSRI Station 36 Oyster Bay. But, it should also be considered one of their proudest!

Cheshire Home Summerstrand is turning the big FIVE-OH, and they’re throwing a golden jubilee fete that promises to be the best one yet!

Summerstrand, South Africa (28 May 2025) – Cheshire Home Summerstrand will be marking its 50th birthday with an exciting golden jubilee fete!

For 50 incredible years, the home, which is part of the larger Leonard Cheshire Disability Homes organisation,  has been a source of strength, comfort and a place to call home for countless residents with physical disabilities.

“We are so proud of where we have come from, and so excited to take on the next 50 with renewed energy and the spirit of taking this Home to a new level,” shares the Cheshire Home Summerstrand manager, Deidre Burger.

With a vision to alleviate societal barriers, the home encourages residents to live fully and reach their highest potential, while providing the conditions necessary for the physical, mental and social well-being.

Mark your calendars for 7 June

Each and every year, staff organise and host an annual fete with the aim of making R300,000.

“This year, we are going to stretch this – and aim for R500,000 to align our 50th birthday celebration to something bigger, and more special,” says Deidre.

The fete has grown in popularity and is now a highly esteemed event on the PE/GQ calendar.

With hopes to make this year’s event bigger and better, Diedre and the team of dedicated staff and volunteers invites the public to be part of making it the most memorable yet.

“We invite you to participate, either through donations of cash, products, services or volunteering at the event.

“We also ask that you share the details with friends and family so that we can enjoy the company of a large crowd. We will have live entertainment, longer shopping hours and an auction at 11am, which is always a popular attraction on the day.”

Space is also available to a host of independent stalls at the front of the Home.

“You are welcome to rent a space to advertise and sell your products, or merely come and support these wonderful businesses at our event,” Deidre explains.

Donations for items such as assorted cakes, fresh produce, light foods, tea, coffee, as well as pre-loved household goods, towards hosting a successful event will also be highly appreciated.

The fete will be held at Cheshire Home Summerstrand on 7 June from 8am-1pm. To make a contribution and to be a part of making the annual fete extra special, call Diedre on 041 583 2183.

You know that deep-seated dream that you really want to achieve, but aren’t sure how to reach? Well, let the story of security guard, Bulelani Thompson, who dropped out of varsity, by no fault of his own, and later returned to the same institution to finish what he started, be your reminder that anything is possible!

Eastern Cape, South Africa (22 May 2025) – Bulelani Thompson is living proof that your dreams are valid, even if your circumstances are challenging, and that you can still pursue them years after they were first planted in your heart.

A dedicated security officer at the University of Fort Hare (UFH), Thompson had always dreamed of furthering his education and venturing into politics and international relations. Although he enrolled as a student at that very university over 20 years ago, financial constraints proved a significant stumbling block, resulting in Thompson dropping out and pursuing work in the Western Cape instead.

According to UFH, when he returned home, his partner encouraged him to give his academic dream another shot. He was soon he was accepted at the Bisho campus in 2021, a moment that marked the reopening of a door that had remained closed for years.

In that same year, Thompson was also hired as a security officer at UFH’s Alice campus. While it was not easy, he juggled both studies and work to the best of his ability.

“Balancing work and studies was difficult, especially when his shifts clashed with online classes. Sometimes students or staff would see me with a laptop while on duty and wonder what I was doing. I had to explain that it wasn’t for entertainment, it was for my studies,” he tells UFH.

But Thompson kept his head down and did the work, while also drawing strength from his partner, who had been his biggest supporter throughout the journey.

He completed his undergraduate degree in record time and went on to pursue his Honours in Political Science in 2024, which he successfully obtained at his graduation this month at the age of 44. And he has no plans to stop as he now looks forward to pursuing his Master’s degree.

The ultimate goal: to work in international relations.

“I’d like to thank everyone who contributed to my success, the groups I worked with since 2021, my colleagues, my lecturers, and of course, my partner. This journey has taught me that it’s never too late to go back and pursue your dreams,” a grateful Thompson shares.

42 elephants have been safely translocated and given a new and sustainable place to call home within the Addo Elephant National Park, marking a hopeful step forward for conservation efforts in the Eastern Cape.

Gqeberha, South Africa (21 May 2025) – In an exciting win for conservation, South African National Parks (SANParks) has successfully translocated 42 elephants from Addo Elephant National Park’s (AENP) Main Camp to the newly secured Kabouga section.

This critical move is part of ongoing efforts to expand the Addo elephants’ range and restore ecological balance in one of South Africa’s most iconic and cherished conservation areas.

Conducted last week, the translocation was meticulously planned and executed by an expert team of conservationists, wildlife veterinarians and logistics specialists. Each stage was carried out with careful attention to animal welfare and ecological integrity.

Park Manager, Roland Januarie, shared that Addo, which is home to over 700 elephants, has a proud record of elephant conservation and maintains a healthy and secure population of one of Africa’s most iconic animal species.

“Translocation between sections of the park has been successfully carried out over many years based on the need to expand their range and to restore the original ancient elephant corridors. Looking forward, the consolidation of the neighbouring Kabouga and Darlington sections of the park is planned,” said Januarie.

The Kabouga section, about 50km away by road from the Main Camp, offers a restored habitat where elephants can re-establish their ecological roles. Reintroducing elephants to this landscape is central to a broader conservation vision of repairing degraded ecosystems through species-led restoration.

By expanding the elephant range and establishing new, sustainable habitats, the translocation stands to contribute to long-term biodiversity health and the reactivation of natural ecosystem functions across the region.

The newly relocated elephants will be carefully monitored as they settle into their new environment, marking a hopeful step forward for conservation efforts in the Eastern Cape.

The Global Humane Conservation Fund of Africa, an initiative of the Global Humane Society, provided much-needed support that enabled the successful implementation of this project.

“We at Global Humane Society are proud to support this critical restoration project and help ensure these elephants have the space they need to thrive”, said Dr Robin Ganzert, President and CEO of Global Humane Society.

“This effort will reactivate the natural systems that elephants help sustain as each step of this process is managed with precision and care, prioritising the welfare of the elephants and the delicate ecosystem at every stage.”

Elephants are widely recognised as ecosystem engineers – their presence transforms landscapes in ways that benefit a vast array of other species. From opening up thickets and dispersing seeds to creating water access points, their natural behaviours support biodiversity and rejuvenate ecological processes that have been dormant in areas where elephants have long been absent.

After enduring a severe fungal eye infection that caused temporary blindness, Amanda Cromhout healed and vowed to pursue a cause that would seek to restore the vision of those most in need in underserved Eastern Cape communities.

spar hero of the week

Cape Town, South Africa (19 May 2025) – It has been over three years since Amanda Cromhout’s life took a scary and devastating turn when she was unexpectedly diagnosed with fusarium keratitis (a serious fungal infection of the cornea), leaving her not just in pain but severely affecting her eyesight too.

“My world changed dramatically for an initial three months of absolute fear, illness and excruciating pain. Then for the following 18 months, I was temporarily blind in my right eye,” Amanda shares in a video.

However, through expert treatment, she was healed and has since made it her personal mission to support the healing of other desperate individuals who, too, find themselves in the dark and in need of restored sight.

“Today I am privileged to see ‘well enough’ out of both eyes and my life is back to an amazing ‘normal’.”

Through her non-profit organisation, Blind Loyalty, founded on the back of her own personal illness, Amanda plays a significant role in the funding of vital cataract and corneal transplant surgeries, especially in underserved communities in the Eastern Cape.

“Every month in the Eastern Cape, there is a surgery day for rapid cataract surgeries, where approximately 25 patients who are either bilaterally blind or blind in one eye get their blindness reversed through funding from Blind Loyalty to Grace Vision,” Amanda explains.

For an elderly grandmother raising young children in her household or a father who works hard as the main breadwinner of his family, unexpected blindness is tragic, to say the least.

As part of her continued efforts to raise awareness and funds for those experiencing curable blindness, Amanda, as well as other running communities around the world, have run various races to support Blind Loyalty’s mission to change the lives of so many people who would otherwise be left blind and suffering.

More recently, Amanda has been training for her ninth Comrades Marathon, which she will be running to reverse blindness.

“I am not confused at all about why I am lining up for my ninth Comrades run on 8 June. To raise funds to reverse blindness,” Amanda reiterates.

She invites the greater public to pledge any amount to Blind Loyalty as she continues her compassionate mission. To make a pledge, visit the fundraising campaign here.

Fifteen gentle creatures had faced immense hardship, with some kept illegally as pets in heartbreaking conditions. However, this was before the real-life heroes of the Garden Route SPCA intervened to not just rescue them but help them return to the lives they were always meant to lead.

Eastern Cape, South Africa (15 May 2025) – Fifteen tortoises have been successfully returned to the wild thanks to the tireless efforts of the Garden Route SPCA.

These creatures had been kept as illegal pets, others used by traditional healers, and some had just wandered far from safety.

“Some endured heartbreaking conditions, no grass beneath their feet, no nutritious food and had medical conditions that were just ignored,” the SPCA wrote in a video post.

This was until the SPCA stepped in.”

Some tortoises were reported to have had holes in their shells from being chained, overgrown nails from being confined and kept in horrific conditions.

“After a full vet check and a crucial period of isolation at the SPCA, they slowly but surely regained their strength.”

The SPCA reached out to the Shamwari Game Reserve and planned a mission for the tortoises’ release into the wild.

Garden Route SPCA, Inspector Gerda, was also captured in a separate clip of the video on the exciting day of the rewilding of the tortoises.

At the end of a long drive, the resilient reptiles were safely released into their new, safer and ideal wild home.

The SPCA extended its heartfelt thanks to Dr Elke Schwellnus of VetCare for her guidance and expert care as well as to its incredible team members and every single person who helped, assisted, and stood up for these beautiful creatures.

“Your compassion made this possible. Wild animals belong in the wild, and today, 15 more are exactly where they should be,” the Garden Route SPCA said.

We applaud this amazing team for leaving no stone unturned where others may have turned a blind eye. Thanks to you, the story of these shelled beauties has been beautifully reimagined.

South Africa’s generosity has given a father and husband a fighting chance against one of the rarest forms of cancer. We previously shared how your kind hearts helped contribute a large portion to Reverend Barry Fourie’s treatment, and the incredible news is it’s working!

Eastern Cape, South Africa (14 May 2025) – When hope seemed like a fragile thread, the incredible generosity of South Africans has given Reverend Barry Fourie and his family the strength to persevere and a true fighting chance.

Diagnosed with a rare Epithelioid Inflammatory Myofibroblastic Sarcoma, Reverend Barry Fourie is now halfway through his cancer treatment, and it is working!

Fourie’s daughter, Minki, was overjoyed and deeply grateful to share her father’s progress with Good Things Guy.

“It is amazing how our story touched people’s hearts and their contributions have helped us raise an incredible R820,000 of the R1.5 million required for his treatment.

“We’re deeply thankful for everyone’s trust in our cause and their willingness to help,” Minki shared.

Despite the challenges, particularly the fact that medical aid does not cover Fourie’s immunotherapy treatment, the family refuses to lose hope that he will make a full recovery.

Together they have gone above and beyond to rally support and pay towards his treatment through fundraisers, raffles, food sales and appeals. South Africa’s continued support through heartfelt donations has also played a significant part of the journey.

“We have received great news so far, the treatment is working!! We have seen a 33% decrease in the sarcoma that grows after surgery. We know we are on the right treatment and my dad is feeling good on it,” Minki added.

Reverend Fourie needs just a little more support to afford his remaining immunotherapy treatment. If you can, please consider donating to his BackaBuddy page here.

The Afrikaans language may have quietly marked turning 100 years old, but the learners of Victoria Girls’ High School didn’t hold back celebrations as they danced and brought all the good vibes to the school quad.

Grahamstown, South Africa (13 May 2025) – Did you know that Afrikaans turned 100 years old recently? Well, on 8 May 1925, Afrikaans was recognised as an official language of South Africa, marking 100 years last Thursday!

A daughter language of Dutch, Afrikaans is a widely spoken home language in South Africa, with millions of speakers from diverse ethnic groups and many more who speak it as a second language.

Its centennial anniversary didn’t exactly make headlines in mainstream news, but that’s why you can trust Good Things Guy to unearth the joy and celebratory vibes.

The result? – We found footage of the entire Victoria Girls’ High School squad dancing up a storm as they celebrated a century of Afrikaans with music, dancing, and good vibes during break time!

An entertaining video shows the learners holding nothing back as they danced to an awesome, upbeat Afrikaans tune, effortlessly showcasing the power of music to connect us all and ignite good times.

We’re sure the learners appreciated the break away from their books and assignments to let their hair down.

“The energy was high as we lit up the quad with joyful movement and culture. Cheers to 100 years of Afrikaans! Ons het dit baie geniet, dankie Mnr Jasson,” the school said.
