Talented young ballerinas known as the ‘Baby Swans’ have earned an opportunity to perform with the pros in The Gold Rhino of Mapungubwe in Switzerland.

Johannesburg, South Africa (27 May 2025) — A group of little ballerinas affectionately known as the ‘Baby Swans’ from the Mzansi Ballet Vocational School are getting excited for a big opportunity as they prepare to perform in Switzerland alongside the pros.

The Mzansi Ballet Senior Company is set to put on a performance of The Gold Rhino of Mapungubwe in Lugano, Switzerland from 30 June to 6 July. This performance will be a highlight in the Rhythm of Two Souths Music and Dance Festival.

The Baby Swans (dancers aged between 8 and 13) have the chance to perform with the senior dancers in what could be an incredible opportunity for their budding dancing careers; both for the exposure and the experience.

To raise the necessary funds for the trip across the pond, the ‘Baby Swans’ squad and their support systems are betting on their dreams by hosting a fundraiser in the form of an evening of music and dance. The evening will be hosted at the Pieter Toerien Theatre, Monte Casino for all Joburgers craving a cultural evening.

Dubbed ’Fusion of Favourites’, the event will feature the world premiere of renowned choreographer Vincent Mantsoe’s ‘Song of Khudugo/Exodus’ alongside performances from the Mzansi Ballet dancers. Food and drinks are included in the ticket!

The proceeds are entirely dedicated to the Baby Swans getting to Switzerland, and those interested in attending can email mzansiballet@gmail.com.

Says proud Baby Swans parent, Charlene Izzet:

“These girls dedicate much of their time and energy to perfecting their craft and performances, and any support at the fundraising event would be incredibly appreciated. It’s a fantastic chance to witness their passion and dedication up close.”

Whoever said you can’t follow more than one dream at the same time hasn’t met Gabriel Ravenscroft. Gabriel is a professional ballet dancer with quite the knack for mathematics. Recently, the dancer graduated with a B.Sc in Pure Mathematics & Computer Sciences!

Cape Town, South Africa (23 April 2025) — There are a few things that dance and mathematics have in common, and among them is Gabriel Ravenscroft—a professional ballet dancer who recently walked the stage to claim his B.Sc Degree at the University of Cape Town.

The degree wasn’t just shorthand for years of hard and demanding work. It was also proof that you can follow more than one dream at the same time—even if those dreams are typically considered worlds apart.

Gabriel is a professional dancer with Cape Ballet Africa, who were among the first to highlight that the he had earned his degree “while carrying out all his responsibilities as a professional ballet dancer” (read: a demanding profession in which commitment, putting in the hours and consistency are everything—not unlike mathematics and computer sciences). Before dancing with Cape Ballet Africa, Gabriel worked professionally as part of the Cape Town City Ballet dancers.

This Autumn, he walked the stage as part of the cohort of UCT graduates where his mom, Dr Julia Cain of The Centre for Film and Media Studies, capped him in what we imagine was a big moment for both of them. Not to mention, Mr Ravenscroft passed with distinction.

The ballet dancer’s achievement is a healthy dose of inspiration for anyone who has dreams or goals that express different parts of themselves and their talents.

Why be confined to just one field when you’ve got magic in another?

Grade 8 Dancer Chandni Kistasamy has been selected to dance at Disney’s Magic Kingdom for its Diwali parade later this year!

Fourways, South Africa (15 April 2025) — A Grade 8 dancer has caught the attention of Disney’s Magic Kingdom.

Chandni Kistasamy is a learner at Crawford International Lonehill. But, when she’s not hitting the books, she’s nurturing her creative talents—specifically Indian Classical dance.

Determination and talent in tandem, Chandni recently received a ‘fairytale’ opportunity—the chance to perform at Disney’s Magic Kingdom as part of the Diwali parade. Chandni beat out numerous other hopeful dancers from around the world to claim her spot at the Kingdom (thousands, according to her school). This is a significant deal for any ambitious dancer and performer, let alone one who has only just begun her high school studies.

Though the event is only on the books for October (Diwali season), the Fourways community are already teeming with excitement and counting down the days until the Grade 8 dancer shares her magic of movement with the world.

Her school got the head start in congratulating her, followed by the I Love Fourways social media group (which bubbled over with congratulatory messages).

What’s most beautiful about her opportunity is that it’s connected so many different communities—her school, Indian Classical dance lovers, Fourways and of course, Disney fans. And, considering how early into a dance career she is, it could certainly set the tone for many more moments in which she dazzles crowds and inspires other dreamers.

You’ll be seeing a lot of dance moves accompanied by the hashtag #StepItUpChallenge this month for all the best reasons (and from people like Paralympic gold medallist Mpumi Mhlongo)! Here’s why SA is turning its efforts toward making children’s dreams of dance come true:

South Africa (07 November 2024) — November is an important month on the calendar for many South African communities. It’s National Disability Rights Awareness Month, a time when people rally support for the enforcement of disabled South Africans’ rights and spotlight the shortcomings disabled communities face in South Africa, which needs a major makeover when it comes to accessibility.

Following last year’s success, the #StepItUpChallenge is back with a bang, ready once again to raise awareness and support for children with clubfoot—a condition that impacts nearly 200,000 children around the world.

Without treatment, clubfoot (being born with one or both feet twisted inward and pointed downward as unilateral or bilateral) can leave people disabled. This is most disheartening, considering that clubfoot can be corrected in over 90% of cases when prompt intervention is accessible.

Paralympic Gold Medallist Mpumelelo (Mpumi) Mhlongo and the dancer who took the world by storm, Musa Motha, are once again backing the challenge in an effort to support the national dance mission and NPO, STEPS Clubfoot Care.

For those who are out of the loop, the #StepItUpChallenge became a massive dance challenge that saw people dance to the amapiano track, “I Am Possible”, by legendary local producers Dino Moran, Bee Deejay, and DJ Schuster and raised R230,000! It also curated a big audience on TikTok to the tune of 2.9 million plays!

This year, the goal is to raise R300 000, once again echoing the message “I Am Possible.”

“I often say Musa doesn’t believe in the word impossible; I break the word into two: ‘I’M’ and ‘POSSIBLE’,” says Musa Motha who lost his leg to cancer at the tender age of 10.

The #StepItUp Challenge encourages everyone to get involved and support the efforts of STEPS, who have made a difference for thousands of children over the past 18 years.

“I have been incredibly fortunate to be a firsthand witness of the phenomenal work STEPS does,” says Mpumi.

“It has fundamentally changed my outlook on life. It serves as a reminder of how easily we can beat the odds and empower the children of today to be the future leaders that we need for South Africa to realise its potential.”

The 2024 #StepItUp Challenge

You can support the initiative in the following ways:

  • Create a dance video of your own and share it on TikTok using the hashtag #StepItUpChallenge
  • Spread the word and encourage your friends with rhythm to join in
  • Make a donation via BackaBuddy

Those relaly inspired can even join Mpumi at the Blue Route Mall for an in-person dance challenge on Saturday, 7 December.

You can find out more about STEPS here.

Cape Town-based dance crew Sublime are the dancing queens of the hip hop scene! They have won the Hip Hop Unite World Championships for a second time; making South Africa rich with pride:

Obidos, Portugal (01 November 2024) — Senior Cape Town-based hip hop crew Sublime knew that they were gunning for gold this year.

When the crew told Good Things Guy that they wanted to make South Africa proud again in 2024, it wasn’t wishful thinking. It was a promise and a plan of action that the dancers delivered on in full following a huge success in Obidos, Portugal late last month.

Sublime—a crew of dancers over 35—recently won the Hip Hop Unite World Championships for a second time, making them the official dancing queens of the hip hop scene once again.

It was hardly an easy feat, both in terms of competing and raising the funds to attend the competition.

But, where there’s a will, there’s a way. And this way led the all-female crew to a golden reminder of just how talented they are by global standards—standards that were no easy feat.

“We faced strong competitors who had prepared intensely,” shared Head Coach Corinne de Beer.

Corinne explains that the competition deals in the business of serious pressure, especially when you have a title to defend. Despite the strong competition, Sublime knew that they had focused enough on physical and mental prep to give Obidos their all—and so they certainly did.

Corinne’s junior crew, Regulate, also did superbly and made it all the way to the semifinals.

Needless to say, they’ve got an incredible crew to look up to thanks to Sublime’s impressive track record.

A big congrats to Sublime (Simóne Hepburn, Terri Le Roux, Courtney Allison, Sarah Rennison, Jacinta Richards and Chantal McClure), head coaches Corinne de Beer and Duane Lawrence who were also choreographers along with the legendary Rudi Smith.

After accidentally becoming Simon Cowell over the weekend, a shining moment of humanity made one Capetonian thankful for the grey skies. At a competition for dancers and dreamers where the crowd voted, an overwhelming sensation shone through: everyone braved the weather (with nothing in it for themselves) just to support the dreams of others:

Cape Town, South Africa (19 August 2024) — By complete chance over the weekend, I had the fortune of sitting in Simon Cowell’s proverbial seat as a talent judge of dancers and dreamers… accidentally writes Good Things Guy’s Ashleigh.

Now, I must admit—It wasn’t on my agenda for a Saturday afternoon drenched in clouds and skies of gloom (like many other locals, I had plans to spend this kind of weather hibernating). But, what started with curiosity soon turned into the kind of experience so heartwarming, no grey clouds could get in the way.

While I don’t believe Simon and I have all that much in common, we both have an appreciation for talent. And boy, was there a feast of that in Cape Town on Saturday as dancers and dreamers from all parts of Cape Town competed for the coveted opportunity to represent the City at the upcoming Redbull Dance Your Style Nationals.

I, of course, was not the only Simon. What began as me wondering whether Rudi Smit was performing at the V&A soon turned into myself and others in the audience putting our talent judge hats for a dance competition—voting for who got closer to their dream with each wave of our voting colours.

We’ve all watched the breakdancers who battled it out at the Olympics (and we all have opinions on that). But seeing grassrooted talent live is something else entirely. I marvelled as people adapted their moves to every random song without hesitation or preparation. Gasped as they moved their limbs in ways that’d make you think they didn’t have bones. And I clapped loudly and proudly when the dancer who had given it their all and was almost ready to bow out, got the news that they were through to the next round.

But that’s not the heartwarming part.

This battling process took hours. Hours outdoors in weather drenched in gloom. Hours under threatening clouds. In rain and icy wind. And in that time, the audience seats remained remarkably full.

Full with cheers. Full with beaming faces. Full with newcomers and those who had been there since the first battle. The community support for dancers without their names in lights, from people without any incentive to be there and without good weather on our side was immense. People stopped their shopping to come outside in the rain. They whipped out umbrellas. They told their friends. And it got me thinking:

So often when we’re just starting out on taking a chance on our dreams, we can be so easily discouraged by the fear that no one will support us.

‘What if no one buys the book when I write it?’

‘What if no one cares about the initiative I’m trying to start?’

‘What if no one supports my business?’

Well, what if they do?

The thing about fear is that it’s almost always worse before the fact. The scariest part is not the performance. It’s getting up the stairs to the stage. And you’d be surprised at how many helping hands will make sure you get up to that damn stage come hell or high water.

In a world where we’re often warned about haters of our success and journeys, there’s not enough credit to the supporters. The strangers who rooted for you right in the beginning. The humble followers who liked your content before you went viral. The friends and family who celebrated your very first sale. The crowd who sat in the rain to help see your dream through.

They tell us to dance in the rain of life’s adversity, but they forget to mention how many people applaud us when we do. How many join?

People do believe in people. Good Things Guy wouldn’t exist if they didn’t! And sometimes, all it takes is being brave enough to say ‘what if they do support me’ to find out just how much people actually care.

After watching this dance routine, it isn’t hard to understand why local dance crew Basic Black scooped silver (and perhaps broke out of the matrix) at the World Dance Masters!

Cape Town, South Africa (23 July 2024) — Last month, South Africans did a figurative dance routine of our own after we learned that local dance crew Basic Black had made us enormously proud at the World Dance Masters.

The Cape Town-based dancers headed to Croatia’s Porec for the competition with high hopes, dreams and nerves (that never showed) as they represented our country with the kind of cool rhythm and ‘effortless’ synchronicity most of us can rarely muster, if ever.

Armed with a dance routine choreographed by none-other-than industry legend Rudi Smit, dancer’s DNA and ineffable energy, Basic Black was primed with everything necessary to make the competition one for the books. And that’s exactly what they did: earning silver against 53 countries in the Senior Urban Formation leg of the competition! Impressively, they were also the only crew who represented South Africa at the Senior Gala Night.

Since then, South Africans have eagerly been awaiting to see the moves behind the feat. Lucky for us, good things come to those who wait.

Rudi has officially shared the dance routine he choreographed for Basic Black and let us be the first to tell you—it’s art in motion.

Cool, calm, collected and perhaps on a mission to break out of the matrix—it’s no surprise that Basic Black positively ate at Worlds.

A young dancer made her moves to the World Championships yet again to represent South Africa on the global stage once more!

Global, South Africa (02 July 2024) — South African dancers from all over the country and across disciplines have made headlines for the most inspiring reasons recently. While ballerina Zeinhab Kone from Johannesburg secured a beautifully bright future for herself thanks to tireless work and a scholarship to a prestigious dance school in the States, a Cape Town dance crew scooped silver at the World Dance Masters for their collective talents and a young dancer earned her chance to represent South Africa yet again on the international stage for freestyle and slow dance.

Said young dancer, Chloé Lahoud is no stranger to the Freestyle World Championships. Last year, it was after this prestigious competition that she earned her dancing stripes—her Protea Colours (which she has received for a second year).

She’s also something of a disco-dancing queen if her first place at the 2023 SADTA South African Freestyle and Disco Championships are anything to go by.

To no one’s surprise, Chloé qualified to represent South Africa once again at the 2024 run of the Worlds in England’s Blackpool, making it her third time qualifying for the elite spotlight.

After extensive fundraising efforts from her studio, family and trainer Craig Riviere, the time for the young dancer to shine once again soon came around as late June did.

Her school, Hoërskool Dinamika and her larger dancing community couldn’t be more proud of her impressive track record, and the rest of her country eagerly await to see how far her moves with take her.

From Johannesburg to London and New York! Ballerina Zeinab has paved her path to a bright future in ballet, earning both a bursary to an international competition and a full scholarship to the the American Ballet Theatre.

Johannesburg, South Africa (30 June 2024) — It’s very easy to get caught up in the whimsical elegance dancers like Ballerina Zeinab Kone exude.

We, the public, are almost never privy to the gritty work that goes on behind the scenes; work that’s poured into not only making the dances as seamlessly graceful as they always are but also the work that’s put into getting those dancing opportunities in the first place.

So, when shining opportunities do come a ballerina’s way, those of us rooting from the audience can only imagine how much mental and physical discipline went into getting that seat at the table.

Zeinab stands tall at the cusp of two dream opportunities. The first comes by way of her performance during her Royal Academy of Dance Advanced 2 exam. This earned her a high distinction, and as such, a bursary to compete in the Margot Fonteyn International Ballet Competition in London come September.

The second, is that after London, Zeinab will be heading to the Big Apple for her final year of training at the American Ballet Theatre Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School as her school, St Mary’s Waverley, proudly share.

The blossoming ballerina has been offered a full scholarship for her New York adventure and the beginning of a beautifully bright future ahead.

This after her competition as a soloist in the 2024 Youth America Grand Prix earlier this year, which Zeinab dubbed as the occassion that “literally changed [her] life”.

Needless to say, Zeinab is a ballerina to watch. From Johannesburg to London and New York, we can’t wait to see where else her hard work and breathtaking talent will take her.

South African dance crew Basic Black made the competition shake at the World Dance Masters earlier this month, scooping silver for their skills!

Global (28 June 2024) — South African dance crew Basic Black are anything but basic.

A formidable force in the world of dance hailing from the City of Cape Town, the crew have enjoyed numerous accolades for their collective talents and have added another to their tally recently—not that we can say we’re surprised, considering that none-other-than Rudi Smith choreographed their performance and Principal Kim Venter coached their path.

After heading to Porec in Croatia brimming with excitement and nerves after months of preparation work, Basic Black went on to moonwalk away with second place for the Senior Urban Formation leg of the competition after dancing against 53 countries.

Basic Black also happened to be the only South African dance crew who represented our country at the Senior Gala Night, making their time in Porec that much more special for Mzansi.

It was a huge moment for dancers like Jade Adams, who is also a MOD programme coach (Mass participation, Opportunity and access, Development and growth) for the Western Cape Government’s Department of Cultural Affairs & Sport.

As someone who spends a lot of time giving back to her community by teaching others how to hone their passions for movement and music, Jade now stands proudly as someone who danced her way toward her dreams; encouraging young dancers know that achieving one’s dreams is as possible as the work you’re willing to put in!
