The cosiest fundraiser is just a few sleeps away and has the potential to fund the dreams of so many children fighting life-threatening illnesses.

South Africa (27 May 2025) — Getting cosy for a cause happens in a few sleeps on 30 May; South Africans all over the country will step out into the world not in heels, school shoes or sneakers but in slippers, fluffy, bold and comfort-approved. It’s not exactly a rebellion against conventional shoes (well, maybe in part). Largely, it’s a day that’s dedicated to taking the steps to make a little person’s childhood dream come true.

In most cases, we take our slippers off when we curl up into bed and are ready to dream. But for Slipper Day, we put them on proudly and wear them everywhere in an effort that symbolises dreams becoming reality.

At the heart of the fundraiser is the Reach For A Dream Foundation. Their mission orbits around children fighting life-threatening illnesses and focuses on giving these kids a dose of much-needed magic by giving children a break from their battles and a chance to live out their Dream Days.

The dreams that make up a Dream Day are different for every child. They range from getting to play pretend in their dream career (as a firefighter, chef or whatever they’d love to do when they grow up) to meeting their heroes, or travelling to a place they’ve always wanted to see for the very first time.

In this way, the children (affectionately referred to as Dreamers) get a day to just be kids, spoiled with a slice of life that usually only happens when they’ve drifted off into a fantasy world.

You can help make a myriad of dreams come true simply by participating in the cosiest fundraiser of the year!

Cosy for a Cause:

  1. Purchase your slippers ‘ticket’ (AKA, your permission to wear slippers out in society) You can get stickers at Wimpy, Dischem Pharmacies, Baby City, Pick n Pay, Toys R Us, Babies R Us, Krispy Kreme, Hush Puppies, and The Crazy Store.
  2. You can also purchase a virtual sticker here or a fun pair of cosy footgear (they’ve got everything from baby sharks to hot pink flamingos!), here
  3. Encourage as many people as you can to do the same.

For Schools

  1. Participate in the School Competition (where you can sell stickers and win a prize)
  2. Or, the social media challenge in which you create and post a fun slipper video for another prize!
  3. There is also the Spirit of Slipper Day Award up for grabs a chance for schools that embody the joy of making dreams come true together with Slipper Day to life.

With only four sleeps to go until the big day, there’s still plenty of time to get your stickers, choose your slippers and spread the word to build the slipper squad.

Three friends, each from a different South African culture (Afrikaans, Xhosa, and Indian), became part of a legal eagle trio during their studies. All lawyers now, the tight-knit friends shared how their different backgrounds served an important role in their friendship and successes.

Stellenbosch, South Africa (08 April 2025) — Three friends who became something of a legal eagle trio during their studies at Stellenbosch University have something to teach all of us, and it’s not about law.

This lesson isn’t just about the power of friendships forged from different cultural backgrounds either. Instead, it lies in the experience of actively learning from these differences—which is quite different to simply knowing that the differences are there.

The three friends making up the legal eagle trio are Akhona Sandaza, Dawid Oosthuizen and Seyuran “Sey” Arran.

While studying law, a young Dawid found himself under the mentorship of second-year Akhona during orientation week. Sey soon joined in (he had been friends with Dawid in Johannesburg), and the beginning of a strong friendship between the three men began.

When they weren’t studying or simply being young together, they were learning about each other’s Afrikaans, Xhosa and Indian cultures.

They tasted different foods from one another’s worlds, learnt different expressions and attended each other’s family gatherings.

“Meeting each other’s families closed the circle,” reflected Sey.

Differences ranged beyond culture. Akhona liked the outdoors, while Dawid and Sey relished playing a game of soccer. To this point, the trio made efforts to give time to each other’s favourite activities when they could, and reach compromises when they couldn’t.

Each learnt something from the other through their great respect for what made them different. Not just acknowledgment—respect. The result? A friendship that saw them graduate in their studies and into a new level of friendship, considering each other family.

“Our friendship is a space where I feel comfortable being vulnerable. The fact that I’m different in certain ways never became an issue. We could all just be ourselves. We engage without fear or judgement. It has show me the value of close male friendships that transcend societal expectations of masculinity,’ Akhona reflects.

“The fact that all of us were so different, but had similar core values, helped us to talk through things and hold each other accountable when it mattered most…we all felt responsible for each other and ourselves,” adds Sey.

In fact, differences in viewpoint are often something they embraced. As Dawid shares of his fond memories in debating with Akhona as law students who argued different judgments:

“We don’t always agree, but we refine each other’s viewpoints. The key is staying open-minded and being willing to listen.”

Despite their careers taking them to different parts of the country, the lessons their friendship has taught them will long remain each’s North Star.

“Regardless of where life takes us, we’ll still be supporting each other and celebrate our successes. I dream of us having fulfilling careers, strong families and being there for each other in the years to come.”—Akhona Sandaza.

The Wire Woman statue was created as a creative response to the fact that there are few statues honouring women in Cape Town. This International Women’s Day, she transformed with pieces of peace, including a rainbow solidarity skirt filled with messages of support against GBV.

Cape Town, South Africa (14 March 2025) — In light of International Women’s Day, the famed Wire Woman statue got a new outfit—this time donning pieces of peace.

For those unfamiliar with the lore behind the statue, the Wire Woman was created in 2016 and designed by Lovell Friedman and Sue Kramer in honour of all women in Cape Town.

The Wire Woman came as a creative response to the fact that there are few statues honouring women in the City—much as is the case all over the world. At 2 metres high, she stands proudly as a signature of appreciation and as a canvas for important messages.

Last year, during Women’s Month, the Wire Woman turned into a work of wooly art as women from all over Cape Town knitted and crocheted items (everything from scarves to toys) to dress her up as part of Artscape’s Women’s Humanity Festival.

She became a kaleidoscopic symbol of unity—something her guardians (Woman Zone CT) are all about!

To celebrate International Women’s Day this year, the Wire Woman became a Wire Warrior Woman and Peace Lover.

With a makeover, she became an important symbol for the STEP-UP for Peace campaign against gender-based violence at Artscape; brought to life thanks to Anne Bisset and Emily Ilunga, who adorned her with origami doves.

In variants of loosely-fitted white fabric, the statue complimented notions of purity, while the centre of her dress skirt revealed colour messages to create the ‘Solidarity Skirt’.

Artscape shared that this skirt was signed by “the many women and men who care to help stamp out violence wherever it occurs.”

Of the peace symbolism, they shared:

“[International Women’s Day] strives to raise the possibility of a gender-equal world. A world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination. A world that’s diverse, equitable, and inclusive. A world where difference is valued and celebrated.

“It calls for action that can unlock equal rights, power and opportunities for all, and a feminist future where no one is left behind. Through the conduit of the ‘arts’, Artscape, the country’s leading cultural institution seeks to find, not just equality, but PEACE.”

The Dakar Heroes that made history for South Africa at the 2025 Dakar Rally were welcomed home in the warmest way with a fantastic performance for the racers at O.R Tambo International Airport in Jozi!

Johannesburg, South Africa (23 January 2025) — O.R Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg came alive on Wednesday, 22 January, as fans, families and friends waited in collective anticipation for South Africa’s Dakar heroes to emerge from the arrivals gates.

The recent 2025 Dakar Rally season proved to be even more of a feat than usual (which says a lot, considering the Rally is already known as the world’s toughest). However, South African racers hoisted our flag high in Saudi Arabia, defeating sand dunes, putting endurance to the utmost test, and making motorsport history this month, which is in the process of it all.

Pilot Henk Lategan, along with co-pilot Brett Cummings from Toyota Gazoo Racing South Africa, managed to storm to a historic second-place finish behind Saudi Arabia’s own Yazeed Al-Rajhi in what was a goose-bump-inducing finish to the rally-to-end-all-rallys!

Also representing South Africa were numerous other brave racers, each of whom contributed to a fantastic 2025 Dakar season.

As such, welcoming the Dakar heroes home was a top priority for many motorsport fans in South Africa. An electric experience, the homecoming saw signings, piques at the famous Dakar trophies, and, to top it all off, a powerful performance that made us think: ‘There’s no better place to be welcomed back to than South Africa’.

In just two days, South Africans raised essential funds for wheelchair rugby player Musa to get a new wheelchair! A campaign started by his coach Ilan, who feared Musa’s chair would fall apart any day now, the effort has been nothing short of a whirlwind success:

Johannesburg, South Africa (11 October 2024) — A young man named Musa can usually be found beaming with an infectious smile. A rugby lover, enthusiastic character and dedicated teammate, it’s almost easy to forget that Musa’s life has been fledged with difficulty.

Musa is wheelchair-bound due to polio. An orphan who has never been to school, he also does not know the joy of reading or writing. Finding work, too, is a struggle for him, on top of all the day-to-day difficulties that come with a world on wheels. But his happiness comes from the same place it does for many South Africans—rugby.

Musa is a member of a wheelchair rugby team in Mandeville, where he plays under the dedicated guidance of coach Ilan Guest.

Susan Schaum, who put the story on Good Things Guy’s radar, said that Ilan has been coaching the team for many years. Ilan also understands Musa’s plight in a personal way due to his own brother being wheelchair-bound.

“He is a selfless and generous individual,” Susan tells Good Things Guy.

Ilan explains that despite all of Musa’s challenges, he still pushes the 10km round trip on busy roads to get to practice every week. Missing practice is a rare thing for Musa, even with a wheelchair that is on its last wheels.

Musa’s wheelchair was broken. As Ilan explained, “The frame is cracked. No welding can salvage it. At some stage it will collapse with him in it, heaven forbid on a busy road and far from help.”

Inspired by Musa and determined to lighten his load, Ilan initiated a crowdfunding campaign to help get Musa ‘the best chair he has ever had’.

And, in a remarkable turn for Musa, this crowdfunding campaign was met with overwhelming support. In just two days, Musa’s campaign was fully funded by people all over South Africa, many of whom shared love, support and words of encouragement.

But the momentum didn’t stop there. Musa’s campaign kept going, to the point where in 3 days, it has surpassed its target at a current total of R42,150 (the original goal was R30,000).

This means that Musa will now have extra funds that will be aimed at adult-based learning and other essentials like shoes, a backpack, axles and tyres.

The way South Africa came together for Musa is nothing short of remarkable and goes down as a feat akin to any Springbok victory in our books!

Calum Scott’s song “Rise” took on an incredibly special form recently after New Hope School turned it into a Sign Language performance!

Pretoria, South Africa (15 September 2024) — Earlier this week, Pretoria-based New Hope School celebrated Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) Week in the most wonderful way by putting on a performance of a Calum Scott song in Sign Language!

New Hope School shared that over the past few weeks, staff members and students alike had been very busy learning the keyword signs to the song, ‘Rise’—a hit many locals have belted out at the top of their lungs, but few have ever tackled in Sign.

The result was a unity-brimming performance with the whole assembly ‘singing along’ in Sign!

The ultra-special performance has stolen hearts across South Africa. It’s a real-life reminder that with effort, everyone can feel included and have access to experiences that they may never have gotten the chance to enjoy before; something AAC Week hopes to encourage.

Tiny Handz SA Sign Language Training had a big hand to play in bringing the performance to life, with team member Monita Bester helping make it possible.

Considering that Sign Language is an official language in our country, locals have commended New Hope School on this progressive take, with many hoping the idea travels to even more schools across our country.

“What an amazing day,” shared New Hope School. “And like the lyrics say, may we see each learner “rise” above the obstacles they face.”

The teacher of a nation, legend William Smith has sadly left us. But what he leaves behind is a legacy of immense impact. Generations of students who got to pursue their dreams thanks to his guidance through treacherous subjects. And the indisputable proof that great teachers change the world:

South Africa (22 August 2024) — Yesterday, South Africa received the deeply saddening news that the teacher of a nation, William Smith, passed away at 85 years old.

While the loss of a legend loved so dearly by so many is never, ever easy, it also provides the opportunity to reflect and celebrate their lives. And in the case of Mr Smith, there is certainly an abundance to celebrate.

William Smith was born in Makhanda in the Eastern Cape to scientist parents. Following in their footsteps, a young William also pursued science and mathematics, driven by a passion to educate.

In the 1990s, William was a pioneer of what was then a budding edu-programming industry when he went on TV as a teacher on the ‘Learning Channel’ that aired on SABC 2. It was here that William would make a shining name for himself as the teacher of a nation; providing free educational lessons for South Africans through the one classroom that everyone could visit at home.

Considering South Africa’s socio-political landscape at the time, the impact of what William did cannot be understated—for the first time in South Africa’s history, all people could access the same educational resources. William made sure that no one would be left behind on the road to education, and for 25 years, he taught generations of students, and he is attributed as the reason many passed at all.

In 2019, William was awarded the prestigious National Order of the Baobab—the highest civic honour that commends distinguished service. This aptly symbolised the impact he had on our country. Without him, many would never have been able to achieve their dreams. Or believe they were capable of conquering what seemed impossible.

They say you never forget the teacher that changed your life. And for William, this sentiment couldn’t be more true to a great extent of magnitude as South Africans online are showcasing.

William’s Impact, as Told by His Students

“A peaceful journey to the asymptote of mathematical heaven, William Smith. Your legacy endures, much like the infinite nature of mathematics itself. Thank you for making its complexities understandable to so many of us.”—Phumzile Van Damme.

“Most South Africans from multiple generations owe their educational success in maths & physics to the great teachings of William Smith who just passed away from cancer,” writes Paballo Chauke who later added that William embodied this Nelson Mandela quote:

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”—Nelson Mandela.

“The outpouring of affection the nation directed at him when he received his National Order demonstrated, years after his retirement, [demonstrated] the place he held in people’s hearts…William Smith’s passion for his curriculum and for the success of those he taught in classrooms, at matric camps and on TV benefited millions of young South Africans even before our transition to democracy and the dawn of a new dispensation of equal education.”—President Cyril Ramaphosa.

“He made such a difference for Maths and Science learners far and wide.”—Premier Alan Winde.

“To the most famous Maths teacher, in South Africa, rest in peace, Sir. Mr William Smith will always be remembered for making the most hated subject, the most fun and easy to understand. A Maths whizz who we all learned from, from TV, in the comforts of our homes.”—Yumnah Jones.

“He helped me pass high school maths. He helped me get a distinction in first year Stats. And years later I got to write an article about him receiving a National Order. Thank you Mr Smith. You were a true helper.”—Brent Lindeque.

The Coconuts sitcom is having a moment on social media, uniting South Africans in laughter. One character in particular, Patience (actress Shaleen Tobin), is finally getting her flowers, thanks to the renewed interest!

South Africa (11 August 2024)—It’s been over a decade since The Coconuts hit the screens. But, thanks to TikTok, the Coconuts is having a massive moment once again as South Africans unite in laughter. With the revived interest in the show, love and adoration have made a beeline for one of the show’s main characters—Patience Hlatshwayo (actress Shaleen Tobin) in what can only be described as the actress finally getting her flowers all these years later.

A blast from the past, the Coconuts aired in 2008 and aimed to tackle cultural differences in South Africa as a comedy. But undoubtedly, the character who filled many of our childhoods with the most laughter was Patience—a character who had to navigate life after she was turned into a white woman.

Played by Shaleen, Patience was known for zinging one-liners, impeccable comedic timing and, of course, the ability to connect with all audiences.

After snippets from the show started to go viral on TikTok, comment sections began to overflow with shoutouts to Shaleen, with many sharing that she gave us all the best childhoods.

As one user, Em, put it perfectly:

A community organisation uniting women across Cape Town saw knitters and crocheters join forces for a unique Knit & Natter day, where they transformed the famous Wire Woman statue into a work of wooly art—a symbol of different women from different cultures in the Cape creating beautiful things!

Cape Town, South Africa (06 August 2024) — For two years, Woman Zone CT (a community group bringing women from all parts of Cape Town together) has run a special Everywoman project dubbed Knit & Natter.

Here, women have come together every month to knit, crochet or learn how to do either. But the drawcard isn’t just the chance to knit your heart out—it’s the way wool, hooks and needles have united a rainbow of women from all walks of life, cultures and ages over a shared love of the creative outlet; one example of Woman Zone CT’s bigger mission.

Over the years, these women have used their skills to bond and work together for the betterment of several communities; producing everything from blankets to toys for a number of charities all whilst threading together friendships and connecting over both their shared and different experiences.

Recently, the Knit & Natter team (organised by Theresa Smith, Mel Lippert and Trudy Rushin) came together to dress up a 2-metre high wire statue with their creations as part of Artscape’s Women’s Humanity Festival. More than a ‘Wire Wooly Woman’ fit for a runway, she now stands as a symbol of unity; of women in Cape Town mobilising for each other.

Uniting women has always been at the heart of Woman Zone CT, which began as a small meeting of women at The Kitchen in Woodstock in 2012. Then, as women shared their stories and discussed different ways of bringing Cape Town’s women together, it was only a small inkling of what Woman Zone CT would become.

Today, they stand on a hill that has launched a Women’s Library, established Women’s Work in Progress with other organisations, published the ‘Being’ book and have ultimately acted as a beautiful bridge for Cape Town’s women.

The Wire Woman commemorative statue (created in 2016 and designed by Lovell Friedman and Sue Kramer) was made as an honour to all women of Cape Town and as call to the lack of statues honouring women in the City. We are beyond thrilled to see that her legacy is still very much alive, wooly and wonderful.

You can keep up with Woman Zone CT here.

When devastating floods hit parts of South Africa earlier this year, the spark that keeps so many communities (like that of Stanford) going, had almost been washed out. It was a time to band together like never before. Now, their Christmas market stands as a testament to the spark that couldn’t be put out:

Stanford, South Africa (28 November 2023) — While South Africans anticipated a weather change as we transitioned into spring, many communities were met with a far fiercer force of nature.

Floods in several parts of the country devastated communities as cars became sinking ships and homes became water-locked.

One of the worst-impacted villages was that of Stanford in the Western Cape, which, at the time required floating stretchers and many hands on deck from helpers like the NSRI just to get to safety.

From roads to homes, the community’s very livelihood was caught in the eye of the storm. The recovery from an event like that takes a village.

Their spark might have been dulled, but it certainly wasn’t out. People clung onto each other during the floods and long after the aftermath. Residents in nearby towns like Hermanus have shared their admiration for the people of Stanford, and very quickly, the news of their Christmas Market became not just another event, but a symbol of a spark that couldn’t be put out.

The first Starry Night and Stanford Sunset Market happened on 24 November. If overcoming adversity was a picture, it was all those dazzling lights and the smiles of people who knew this was not about music or good food or even a good Friday night out, but about a community that had overcome.

The second market on 15 December will no doubt share the same spectacle that not even loadshedding can dull.

As we gear up for more festive marvels and appreciate everyone who has gone the extra mile to make the season magic, we’re reminded that every bright light and message of encouragement holds a promise of togetherness, of overcoming and of celebrating the sparks that didn’t go out.
