He helped make peri-peri global but now Robbie Brozin is turning his fire toward something even bigger… the soul of a city.

Johannesburg, South Africa (28 May 2025) – There’s something incredible that happens when you sit down with someone who not only dreams of a better South Africa… but rolls up their sleeves and actually gets stuck in to make it happen.

On this week’s episode of Good Things with Brent Lindeque, I had the absolute privilege of chatting to Robbie Brozin (yes, that Robbie Brozin), the co-founder of Nando’s, the man behind Goodbye Malaria, and the driving force behind the growing movement that is Jozi My Jozi.

You might know him because of peri-peri chicken and those cheeky Nando’s ads but his purpose has always been deeper than spice. These days, his mission is clearer than ever: he wants to fix Johannesburg. Not for clout, not for likes, not for a quick win… but because he genuinely loves this city. And it’s that kind of passion that’s hard not to be inspired by.

“Joburg’s got soul,” he tells me. “We just have to clean it up a bit and show people how amazing it already is.”

Robbie’s story is a proudly South African one, from building an international food brand rooted in local flavour, to fighting malaria across Africa, and now investing his time, energy and heart into revitalising Jozi.

He’s not shouting from the sidelines; he’s hands-on, funding artists, cleaning up spaces, building bridges between business and community and lighting a fire under what could be possible if more people joined in.

What struck me most in our chat is how much he believes in us. In South Africans. In our creativity, our resilience, our humour and our ability to overcome.

“The answers aren’t somewhere else,” Robbie says. “They’re right here. In us. We just need to believe it.”

And that’s what this episode is about. It’s about possibility. About taking ownership. About finding your lane and doing something, anything, to make where you live better.

Robbie Brozin is one of those rare humans who makes you want to do more. Be more. He reminds us that it’s not about waiting for someone else to fix things. It’s about starting. It’s about showing up. It’s about finding the good and growing it.

And that, my friends, is a good thing. A really good thing.

South Africans have united under a common purpose this month: solving a mystery. What began with one woman’s question, ‘Where’s the shoe, George?’ Has become something of a national investigation. Here’s what’s going on!

South Africa (22 October 2024) — It’s not every day that an entire country joins you in finding out whether a scandal in your marriage is afoot. But for one TikTok user, that’s exactly what happened after she asked the question that’s been on repeat in every South African’s mind: ‘Where’s the shoe, George?’.

@vinceleelouche Haibo Guys😹Kanti we are still looking for the shoes namanje? @Netflix South Africa has just joined the Hunt now and they taking things to another level! Wild🤣 @Lene Si Chang #whereistheshoesgoerge #netflix ♬ original sound – Sthuli Sasengweni

It began as a video that quickly soared to viral status (and, dare we say, a damn-near state of national emergency) from George’s wife. Here, she revealed to the internet that she had found a receipt for R18,300; an amount that she believed her husband paid for a pair of women’s Gucci shoes. Shoes that his wife never received.

A scandal perfumed the air, and South Africans wasted no time in inhaling. Before we could repeat the question, internet sleuths had already begun deep dive investigations that SAPs could take a few notes from.

The investigation led to a series of hilarious reactions. Nando’s gave their spicy two cents, the matter was taken to TikTok court, and the exact shoe style was even identified from the information on the receipt. Everyone was on the search. George was not safe. Thousands of people were onto his alleged sneakiness in the most nationally invested unravelling of receipts since Sonia Booth and the cheesecake scandal.

@jodelltantij GUYS !!! 😭 the truth we have all been waiting for #fyp #georgewhereistheshoe @5FM ♬ original sound – jodell tantij

Fast forward to the past weekend, and the plot has thickened. 5fm’s Jodell Tantij finally got in touch with the man of the hour himself to ask him the infamous question. “Where’s the shoe, George?”

Here, George shared his side, finally.

According to him, he was ‘involved with the shoes”, adding that a friend had rung him to meet. The story goes that the two went to Sandton because said friend wanted to surprise his own wife with the shoes.

George said that how the receipt ended up in his car was a mystery to him, too.

When Jodell asked why he didn’t just tell his wife this, George said that it would’ve spoiled the surprise…

While some South Africans have accepted this development, others aren’t buying it (and might already be waist-deep in investigations as to who George’s friend is).

Needless to say, when South Africans get behind something, there will be answers (or at least a few giggles). So, to anyone considering dipping their toes in scandalous waters, let this be your precautionary tale.

This is for all our USA Nando’s lovers but also a message for Nando’s South Africa… don’t be chicken, we want this amazing initiative at home too, asseblief!

America (18 July 2024) – Imagine stepping into your local Nando’s and being greeted with the tantalising aroma of flame-grilled PERi-PERi chicken, knowing that your visit is also making a difference in your community.

Today, this delicious scenario is a reality in some stores in the USA as Nando’s celebrates Nelson Mandela Day by offering free chicken in exchange for school supplies or financial donations.

Nelson Mandela Day, observed annually on July 18, honours the remarkable life and legacy of South African leader and anti-apartheid activist Nelson Mandela. Established by the United Nations in 2009, this day calls on people worldwide to reflect on Mandela’s values and principles and to make a positive impact in their own communities. It’s a day dedicated to service, community, and the spirit of giving—principles that Mandela championed throughout his life.

The importance of Nelson Mandela Day lies in its call to action.

It’s a day that encourages everyone to step up and contribute to the greater good, echoing Mandela’s belief in the power of community and collective effort. This day reminds us that we all have the ability to effect positive change, no matter how small our actions might seem.

Ubuntu Goes Global

The concept of Ubuntu – an idea rooted in the belief that our common humanity binds us – originates from South Africa and has been catching fire around the globe. Nando’s, a South African-born fast-casual chain, is embodying this spirit in America by using Mandela Day as an opportunity to give back to local communities.

From 4-7 p.m. today, customers can receive a free flame-grilled chicken leg or breast at any spice level by donating at least one school supply item or making a financial donation at participating Nando’s Peri-Peri locations in Arlington, including Ballston, Pentagon City, and Rosslyn.

“We hope that Nando’s fans everywhere will embrace this iconic day of giving,” said Nando’s Chief Brand Officer Sepanta Bagherpour in a press release. “So drop off school supplies for our local students in need and enjoy some delicious PERi-PERi flame-grilled chicken in the process.”

The supplies collected at these locations will be delivered to Carlin Springs Elementary in Arlington’s Glencarlyn neighbourhood, ensuring that local youth in need receive the support they deserve.

While we applaud Nando’s for spreading the spirit of Ubuntu across the USA, we can’t help but wonder why a similar initiative isn’t sizzling in South Africa. After all, what better way to honour Mandela’s legacy than by giving back in the land that gave birth to both Mandela and Nando’s?

So come on, Nando’s, don’t be chicken!

Maybe America’s Nelson Mandela Day initiative will fire up some generosity in your South African stores (and roots) to do something similar next year.

Calling all budding creators and makers: Nando’s 2024 Hot Young Designer talent search is officially on and is sizzling with opportunities for talented creatives!

South Africa (14 May 2024) — Every year (when they’re not making ads and meals that fill South Africans with joy) Nando’s ignites a search for their next, hot young designer—a chance for a talented South African creative to have their designs sizzle and shine.

The search is back on, and young creators and makers are officially invited to chase their dreams and have their work become part of casas (restaurants) around the world.

For 2024, entrants are challenged to design their own ‘sensational screens’ where functionality and a unique South African aesthetic must rule the roost.

For the successful talent, the win won’t only see their creation become ‘part of the furniture’ across the casas and online,  it’ll also serve as an opportunity to unlock mentorship and business acceleration resources. As such, the ideal designer for 2024, is also a budding entrepreneur.

Sizzling Opportunities for South Africans

Since 2014, the hot young designer search has helped many creative talents in South Africa boost forward. They have shared their designs for everything from lights and patterns to servers that make up the casas interiors.

In 2022, Nikhil Tricam and Nindya Bucktowar won for their flora-inspired Fynbos Server, while 2020 and 2019 respectively saw Katlego Tshuma and Agrippa Mncedisi Hlophe take the crown. The very first edition of the search was won by Samantha Foaden and Thabisa Mjo, with Thabisa sharing that it ‘changed the trajectory of her life’.

Thabisa went on to become the first South African designer to have her work placed in the permanent collection of the Louvre’s Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris in 2020, and recently participated in Dolce & Gabbana’s ‘Gen D’ exhibition during Milan Design Week this year.

Needless to say, the opportunities are not to be missed.

How the 2024 Young Hot Designer Search Will Work

  • Applicants will be assessed by both their readiness to face the challenges of the commercial design sector and their creations
  • Ten finalists will be chosen by a carefully curated panel of judges against the application criteria
  • They will go on to participate in a design immersion followed by a pitch session
  • Five designers will then be selected to take part in the ‘Labratory of Learning’—a focused mentorship and business programme linked to prototyping their design
  • Finally, a finalist will be selected!

You can enter here, and entries are open until 18 June.

Comedy Central and Nando’s are teaming up for a unique extravaganza titled ‘DemoCrazy: A Roast of South Africa’, promising a blend of laughter, reflection, and perhaps a touch of the absurd.

Picture this: a gathering of the country’s comedic elite and special guests converging to deliver a rib-tickling critique of our beloved democracy. In ‘DemoCrazy: A Roast of South Africa’, Comedy Central and Nando’s are tapping into our nation’s knack for resilience and wit, crafting an event that celebrates our journey with a healthy dose of humour and heart. Against the backdrop of a nation defined by its highs and lows, this comedy showcase is more than just entertainment; it’s a testament to our ability to find joy in adversity and solidarity in shared experiences.

Dillon Khan, Vice President of Comedy Central, expresses his excitement about partnering with Nando’s, a brand that shares their commitment to embracing life’s comedic truths.

“Together, we’ll ignite the flames of laughter,” says Khan. “With Kagiso at the helm, we’re confident this show will capture the true essence of Mzansi.”

Speaking candidly, Kagiso Lediga of Diprente remarks, “I’m thrilled by this opportunity to poke fun at this extraordinary, complex, and utterly crazy country. South Africa is a comedic goldmine, and this show will be a celebration of that.”

Adding to the fervour, Nontobeko Sibiya from Nando’s shares her enthusiasm for the event, emphasizing the brand’s dedication to celebrating the quirks and triumphs of South Africa. “DemoCrazy: A Roast of South Africa promises to be a sidesplitting celebration of our nation’s idiosyncrasies.”

Mark your calendars for Wednesday, May 22nd, as ‘DemoCrazy: A Roast of South Africa’ unfolds live at The Lyric Theatre, Gold Reef City Casino. Limited tickets, starting from R150, are up for grabs through webtickets.co.za.

By daring to laugh at ourselves and embracing the chaos that defines us, ‘DemoCrazy’ aims to celebrate the indomitable spirit of South Africa. It’s a gentle reminder that even in our darkest hours, laughter has the power to unite us and illuminate the way forward.

Nando’s (and South Africa) congratulate Bafana Bafana for their valiant effort in the Africa Cup of Nations semi-final against Nigeria, highlighting the spirit of unity and resilience amidst defeat.

Côte d’Ivoire (08 February 2024) – In the wake of Bafana Bafana’s valiant effort in the Africa Cup of Nations semi-final against Nigeria, Nando’s has stepped up to remind us all that victory isn’t just about hoisting a trophy. In a heartfelt message, the iconic South African brand echoed the sentiments of many, saying, “Lifting our spirits doesn’t require a trophy.”

The semi-final clash was nothing short of dramatic, as a 10-man Bafana Bafana squad poured their hearts onto the field in a tense battle against Nigeria in Côte d’Ivoire. Despite the odds stacked against them, Coach Hugo Broos’ determined charges fought tooth and nail, pushing the game into extra time and eventually a nerve-wracking penalty shootout, after ending the 90 minutes deadlocked at 1-1. Grant Kekana’s red card in the final minutes of extra time only added to the intensity of the match.

The game saw William Troost-Ekong opening the scoring for Nigeria from the penalty spot, answered by a resilient Teboho Mokoena, who equalised for Bafana Bafana in the 90th minute, also from the penalty spot. While the result didn’t swing in our favour, the spirit and determination displayed by the South African team captured the hearts of millions across the nation.

What truly stands out is not just the outcome of the match, but the journey Bafana Bafana has undertaken throughout the Africa Cup of Nations.

They gave their all, igniting a passion for football in South Africans, even for those who don’t typically follow the sport. Just like the Bokke, Dricus du Plessis, Tyla, Musa Motha and the countless South Africans raising the flag for all of us, their grit and determination echoed the sentiments of unity, reminding us all that we are truly Stronger Together!

Looking ahead, Bafana Bafana will now face the losing side in the second semi-final between hosts Côte d’Ivoire and DR Congo in the third-place playoff on Saturday. As they prepare for the next challenge, the nation rallies behind them, showing unwavering support and belief in their abilities.

In times like these, it’s not just about winning or losing—it’s about the resilience, unity, and spirit of a nation coming together to support its team. Congratulations to Bafana Bafana for their remarkable journey, and here’s to many more moments that inspire us all!

Let’s keep rooting for them, South Africa!

A viral fan-made Nando’s ad catapulted Ingrid Stegmann’s life from financial uncertainty to newfound success and opportunity.

Johannesburg, South Africa (27 October 2023) – In the early hours of Sunday morning, following South Africa’s exhilarating victory against England in the Rugby World Cup final, a remarkable Nando’s advertisement took the X-Twitter streets by storm, rapidly going viral.

Once again, Nando’s marketing team displayed their quick wit and brilliant marketing genius, leaving South Africans in fits of laughter.

However, there’s a twist to this heartwarming tale; Nando’s marketing team wasn’t the creator of this viral sensation – it was the work of Ingrid Stegmann.

On that Sunday morning, Ingrid, a South African, woke up with a touch of anxiety. She pondered what would happen if Nando’s decided to take legal action against her for copyright infringement. She also feared that people might show up at Nando’s restaurants, demanding the advertised breakfast at an unrealistically low price, potentially entangling her in a web of consumer protection issues. Sensibly, she decided to delete the post she had initially shared, tagging both Nando’s SA and Nando’s UK.

But, as fate would have it, it was too late – the ad had already spread like wildfire across social media.

In a candid admission of her ‘sins,’ Ingrid shared the ad on her Facebook page on Sunday morning. She later extended her confession to LinkedIn, hoping to alleviate some of her apprehensions. Soon enough, she began receiving WhatsApp messages from friends who were astonished by her creation. The ad had become a trending topic in their WhatsApp groups, both locally and internationally. Messages poured in from the Netherlands, England, and Germany, as the ad gained global recognition.

Even though Ingrid was not a rugby fan and had never dined at Nando’s, the internet couldn’t get enough of her creation. Reddit reposted the ad, and it even made its way onto TikTok, attracting a vast audience. A prominent speaker and radio presenter in Pretoria commended Nando’s marketing team for their exceptional work.

Ingrid’s journey took a surprising turn when she encountered a tweet from Gus Silber, who referred to her creation as a “Fando,” emphasizing its soaring popularity. With a newfound sense of pride, Ingrid reached out to Gus and disclosed her true identity as the ordinary South African woman behind the ad.

In a generous act of support, Gus agreed to share the story on Facebook, revealing the true genius behind the advertisement. News sites also started to write about the story, further catapulting Ingrid’s creation into the limelight.

But this is more than just a viral sensation; it’s a heartwarming story of a life transformed.

Ingrid had been facing a challenging financial situation, having received her last paycheck six months ago after her contract ended. She had been diligently searching on platforms like PNET and LinkedIn for her next project management job, but opportunities were scarce, and her savings were dwindling.

The idea of reviving her own Publishing Services business crossed her mind, but she was still awaiting the breakthrough she desperately needed.

And then, the miracle happened.

This week, Ingrid’s life took an unexpected turn for the better. People started reaching out to her, seeking her advertising services. She was inundated with requests, and her business prospects began to shine brighter.

In her own words, “Sometimes it is not just big massive marketing companies that get it right; sometimes it is someone who really needs it.”

Ingrid Stegmann’s story serves as a reminder that life can change unexpectedly, highlighting the power of creativity and the ability of ordinary individuals to make a significant impact. Her journey underscores the transformative nature of viral success and its ability to bring positivity to those in need, offering readers a heartwarming reminder that life’s most delightful surprises often arrive when least expected.

Nando’s heartwarming winter campaign, the Hot Plot, delivered 5,000 hot meals to various beneficiaries across South Africa, spreading warmth, compassion, and nourishment to those in need.

Johannesburg, South Africa (23 August 2023) – As the sun begins to peek through the chilly winter clouds, we can’t help but look back at a heartwarming campaign that defrosted the cold season for thousands of individuals across South Africa.

In a world that often feels too focused on the hustle and bustle, Nando’s took a step back to remind us of the importance of kindness and community through their remarkable Hot Plot campaign.

Winter can be an unforgiving season, especially for those who lack a roof over their heads. Nando’s, renowned for their flavourful flame-grilled PERi-PERi chicken, recognised this need and decided to warm up the winter with their campaign, which saw the distribution of 5,000 hotpots and soups to various beneficiaries across the nation.

The Hot Plot initiative held hands with organisations like the North-West University (NWU), Queen’s Haven, Odirile for Disabled Children, Tshwaraganang Children’s Homes, Sultan Bahu Community Centre, and Kleintreetjies Kleuterskool. The range of beneficiaries illustrates Nando’s commitment to touching lives across diverse segments of society.

At NWU, 125 hearty meals were prepared by the passionate team at Nando’s Mafikeng and thoughtfully handed over to Mega Care Solution and the University Management. These meals became a beacon of hope for students grappling with adversity, a gesture that didn’t go unnoticed. Mrs L J Maralack, a central figure in coordinating the effort, couldn’t help but express her gratitude on Mmabatho FM.

In the south of Johannesburg, Queen’s Haven, a home for the elderly, was greeted with warmth from Nando’s Rosettenville. 100 hot pot meals not only eased the winter chill but also provided comfort to those who, for various reasons, find themselves away from their families. Matron Naomi and her team were overwhelmed by Nando’s generosity, further solidifying the brand’s role as a compassionate member of the community.

But Nando’s didn’t stop there; their generosity extended to shelters like The Haven Night Shelter, The Salvation Army, and The Gift of the Givers Foundation, bringing warmth and nourishment to those who often go unnoticed on the streets. These shelters, which provide a lifeline to individuals who have nowhere else to turn, saw Nando’s deliver meals that extended far beyond mere sustenance.

Nando’s Jubilee embraced their commitment to giving by providing 60 hot pot meals to Odirile for Disabled Children. This organisation’s mission is to care for the terminally ill and offers rehabilitation assistance, and Nando’s presence brought both smiles and sustenance. Duduzile, a Nandoca from Nando’s Jubilee, recognised Nando’s potential to rally support for even broader causes, echoing the sentiment of unity that Nando’s embodies.

Tshwaraganang Children’s Homes, another recipient of Nando’s benevolence, welcomed 60 hot pot meals from Nando’s Jubilee. The organisation, which stands as a pillar of support for orphaned and vulnerable children, experienced a heartwarming moment as these children, who rarely experience take-out meals, enjoyed a taste of Nando’s goodness. Dudu, a part of Nando’s Jubilee, shed light on the ongoing challenges faced by this shelter, which not only supports over 50 children but also offers refuge for the elderly and those affected by gender-based violence.

The Sultan Bahu Community Centre, supported by Nando’s Fordsburg, embraced the warmth of Nando’s meals with open arms. Children from an orphanage under the centre’s care experienced a burst of joy as they indulged in nourishing food provided by the big-hearted brand. The Sultan Bahu Community Centre’s commitment to aiding those in need resonated deeply with Nando’s Fordsburg’s Operations Manager, creating a union that epitomises the power of collaboration.

Last but certainly not least, Nando’s Eldoraigne spread its heartwarming message to Kleintreetjies Kleuterskool. The daycare, a haven for over 120 children from underprivileged backgrounds, witnessed a ray of light as Nando’s delivered 130 hot pot meals. Abdul and his fellow Nandoca team members donned their capes of compassion to ensure that these children’s winter became a little warmer and brighter.

Nando’s Hot Plot campaign was not just about food; it was about kindling the fire of compassion and community. By extending their warmth and care to 5,000 hearts and tummies, Nando’s reaffirmed their commitment to the belief that they are not just about chicken; they are about people first.

As the seasons shift and we bid farewell to winter, let’s hold on to the warmth Nando’s shared and remember that even in the coldest times, kindness has the power to thaw even the frostiest of hearts.

Hundreds of joyful South African firefighters were recently called on to help a Canadian region battling with record wildfires, but they’re finally back home and Nando’s gave them the “hottest” welcome!

Mpumalanga, South Africa (11 July 2023) – The more than 200 firefighters who fired up a Canadian airport with their singing and dancing, are back on home soil.

In June 2023, the firefighters from our very own Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environments Working on Fire programme were sent to help tame the flames of the more than 550 wildfires that the Canadian province of Alberta has experienced this season.

The group is now back in Mzansi. They landed at Kruger International Airport in Mpumalanga this past weekend to a warm welcome as they were greeted by friends, family, local community members, and an unforgettable atmosphere.

Their return home serves as a powerful testament to the unbreakable spirit and resolve of South Africans, bringing a little relief – and a whole lot of gees – wherever we go.
