He helped make peri-peri global but now Robbie Brozin is turning his fire toward something even bigger… the soul of a city.

Johannesburg, South Africa (28 May 2025) – There’s something incredible that happens when you sit down with someone who not only dreams of a better South Africa… but rolls up their sleeves and actually gets stuck in to make it happen.

On this week’s episode of Good Things with Brent Lindeque, I had the absolute privilege of chatting to Robbie Brozin (yes, that Robbie Brozin), the co-founder of Nando’s, the man behind Goodbye Malaria, and the driving force behind the growing movement that is Jozi My Jozi.

You might know him because of peri-peri chicken and those cheeky Nando’s ads but his purpose has always been deeper than spice. These days, his mission is clearer than ever: he wants to fix Johannesburg. Not for clout, not for likes, not for a quick win… but because he genuinely loves this city. And it’s that kind of passion that’s hard not to be inspired by.

“Joburg’s got soul,” he tells me. “We just have to clean it up a bit and show people how amazing it already is.”

Robbie’s story is a proudly South African one, from building an international food brand rooted in local flavour, to fighting malaria across Africa, and now investing his time, energy and heart into revitalising Jozi.

He’s not shouting from the sidelines; he’s hands-on, funding artists, cleaning up spaces, building bridges between business and community and lighting a fire under what could be possible if more people joined in.

What struck me most in our chat is how much he believes in us. In South Africans. In our creativity, our resilience, our humour and our ability to overcome.

“The answers aren’t somewhere else,” Robbie says. “They’re right here. In us. We just need to believe it.”

And that’s what this episode is about. It’s about possibility. About taking ownership. About finding your lane and doing something, anything, to make where you live better.

Robbie Brozin is one of those rare humans who makes you want to do more. Be more. He reminds us that it’s not about waiting for someone else to fix things. It’s about starting. It’s about showing up. It’s about finding the good and growing it.

And that, my friends, is a good thing. A really good thing.

Communities across South Africa are done waiting and are taking matters into their own hands, cleaning up the streets and creating meaningful employment.

South Africa (12 January 2024) – Community action groups are changing the way South Africans see things like potholes, overgrown curbs, filthy beaches and waste management (to name but a few). These groups are taking matters into their own hands and uplifting communities in the process.

Whether they focus solely on cleaning beaches, restoring rivers, collecting litter, mowing lawns or maintaining roads, these organisations unite communities in efforts to make South Africa a better place.

Every year, since the start of the pandemic in 2020, the Good Things Guy team has been working on these charity lists. This list is actually a new one that we have never shared before. It features all the organisations working to uplift and clean communities through active citizenship.

If we have missed an organisation or charity, please email tyler@goodthingsguy.com, and we will add it soonest; kindly supply the relevant links as well as which province they work in, the NPO/NGO/NPC registration details and a brief description of what the organisation does.

Please note, this is a working list, so keep sending through your charities and groups, and we will keep adding them!

A new song is ready to be streamed, and anyone who lends an ear will be part of uplifting Khayelitsha! Through ‘Layita Khayelitsha’, streams equal solar lights for the community:

South Africa (3 December 2023) — Amapiano artists Khanyisa Jaceni, Sbuda Maleather and Ice Beats Slide are behind an exclusive song with a message of light for the people of Khayelitsha. The anthem, ‘Layita Khayelitsha’ has mobilised creatives like Samauri Faurai (who designed the cover work) to make tangible change through creation in its many facets, at a critical time for the community.

‘Layita Khayelitsha’, which translates as ‘to light up Khayelitsha’, aims to combat the challenges the community face, especially with frequent power outages and insufficient street lighting. These elements have a direct impact on the security of the area.

Through streaming the song, anyone from anywhere can lend their ears to improve these conditions. For every 2000 streams of the track during the campaign’s run, a solar light will be installed for the community.

The goal is to install 50 solar lights by the end of February 2024, and the campaign is running until 31 January.

“Layita Khayelitsha is about lighting up and my name means ‘to light up’ too so I had to be involved,” says Khanyisa.

“I’ve always been obsessed with using my art to help, inspire and change lives in real time & in a real way. This project allowed me to do all of it!” Samurai Farai (Farai Engelbrecht) shared. “Layita Khayelitsha is an anthem created for a generation eager to make a difference.”

You can stream the song and show your support on Spotify, YouTube, or Beatport.

More home composting tools, a better-educated community and less illegal dumping. The Basket of Waste Services roadshow is an initiative in Cape Town focused on waste management and community empowerment, roadshow style.

Atlantis, South Africa (04 July, 2023) — Saxonsea in Atlantis is the next stop on the City of Cape Town’s Basket of Waste Services Roadshow. Through this initiative, the City’s Urban Waste Management helps empower communities in various ways; at the pulse, access to waste management resources like free home composting tools.

Among the services, the Basket of Waste Services Roadshow offers informal settlement cleansing, refuse collection (recycling collection, too) and guidance on waste minimisation to kick illegal dumping to the curb. As a mobile clean-up and waste management educator, the Roadshow helps communities help themselves by tackling environmental concerns with illegal dumping at the top of the list.

As illegal dumping remains a headache across cities in South Africa (often due to a lack of waste management access) giving communities that extra nudge to get into home composting can make the world of difference.

Home composting is one of the greatest helps because it creates space for growth instead of waste and underwhelms landfill areas; more than 3 tons of organic waste have been reported in the Western Cape in the past.

Since the Western Cape’s landfill ban of organic waste, more and more people from all walks of the West have cracked down on their organic waste management. But, not everyone has access to the necessary tools to realise the 2027 goal of 100% landfill reduction. This is why initiatives like the Roadshow (and more of them, at that) matter.

The Roadshow has already made headway this year by visiting Athlone, Bellville, and Charles Morkel Community Hall.

The latest Roadshow to Saxonsea will happen on 11 July.
