He helped make peri-peri global but now Robbie Brozin is turning his fire toward something even bigger… the soul of a city.

Johannesburg, South Africa (28 May 2025) – There’s something incredible that happens when you sit down with someone who not only dreams of a better South Africa… but rolls up their sleeves and actually gets stuck in to make it happen.

On this week’s episode of Good Things with Brent Lindeque, I had the absolute privilege of chatting to Robbie Brozin (yes, that Robbie Brozin), the co-founder of Nando’s, the man behind Goodbye Malaria, and the driving force behind the growing movement that is Jozi My Jozi.

You might know him because of peri-peri chicken and those cheeky Nando’s ads but his purpose has always been deeper than spice. These days, his mission is clearer than ever: he wants to fix Johannesburg. Not for clout, not for likes, not for a quick win… but because he genuinely loves this city. And it’s that kind of passion that’s hard not to be inspired by.

“Joburg’s got soul,” he tells me. “We just have to clean it up a bit and show people how amazing it already is.”

Robbie’s story is a proudly South African one, from building an international food brand rooted in local flavour, to fighting malaria across Africa, and now investing his time, energy and heart into revitalising Jozi.

He’s not shouting from the sidelines; he’s hands-on, funding artists, cleaning up spaces, building bridges between business and community and lighting a fire under what could be possible if more people joined in.

What struck me most in our chat is how much he believes in us. In South Africans. In our creativity, our resilience, our humour and our ability to overcome.

“The answers aren’t somewhere else,” Robbie says. “They’re right here. In us. We just need to believe it.”

And that’s what this episode is about. It’s about possibility. About taking ownership. About finding your lane and doing something, anything, to make where you live better.

Robbie Brozin is one of those rare humans who makes you want to do more. Be more. He reminds us that it’s not about waiting for someone else to fix things. It’s about starting. It’s about showing up. It’s about finding the good and growing it.

And that, my friends, is a good thing. A really good thing.

While leaders shook hands, Gugu shook the internet with a recap so clever it deserves its own diplomatic passport.

South Africa (22 May 2025) – Sometimes, the only way to make sense of the chaos is to laugh at it… and Gugu Statu has absolutely nailed that. Again.

The South African creator behind the viral #NOOZ segment has done it once more, delivering the only “news report” you need about yesterday’s headline-grabbing meeting between President Cyril Ramaphosa and former US President Donald Trump in the Oval Office.

Well, if you want our take, you can read it here. But if you want to laugh… please continue.

While the world scrambles to dissect the politics and power dynamics, Gugu gave us what we really needed, a moment to breathe, to chuckle and to remind ourselves that satire isn’t just funny… it’s essential.

But before we dive into her brilliant blow-by-blow, let’s talk about the woman behind the magic.

Gugu Statu is no stranger to storytelling. A creative powerhouse with a background in television and production, she’s been lighting up social media with her quick wit, sharp satire and characters that feel like home. Her #NOOZ feature started as a lockdown project, parodying the infamous “family meetings” that defined the COVID era in South Africa. But what began as a light-hearted jab at politics and headlines has grown into something far more impactful.

“People were anxious. They were doom-scrolling. We just needed something to laugh about,” Gugu shared in her recent conversation on the Good Things with Brent Lindeque podcast.

And that’s exactly what she’s offered ever since, news with a wink, truth with a grin and sass that says everything we’re all thinking but too polite to say out loud.

Her latest post is a hilarious, slightly unhinged, yet painfully accurate skit that summed up the Ramaphosa-Trump meeting in a way that no official press release ever could.

From Trump’s chaotic golf metaphors and awkward mispronunciations (“RamaPHOsa… got that right. Let’s clap for that”) to Ramaphosa’s diplomatic charm offensive (“I brought the rainbow nation here”), Gugu’s script gave us a satirical backstage pass to what felt like an international episode of The Office — only more surreal.

The entire skit is layered, outrageous, and, dare we say it, better than the real thing.

And while it might be dressed in humour, it’s also laced with razor-sharp observation. Gugu doesn’t shy away from the uncomfortable bits: the questions around land, crime, race and power. But she presents them with that uniquely South African blend of comedy and commentary that lands not just with a laugh but with a moment of pause.

We love Gugs, and what she does is more than funny. It’s necessary. Because when the world feels heavy, when politics get noisy and headlines get bleak, humour becomes our bridge. It connects us. It softens the blow. And it gives us the resilience to keep showing up.

And I think we need that now more than ever.

Thank you, Gugu, for being the voice of reason dressed in ridiculousness. And thank you, South Africa, for still knowing how to laugh, even when the stakes are high.

Now breathe. You’re all doing better than you think.

Sun, sand and a whole lot of penguin charm… Boulders Beach is flying the South African flag high as one of the world’s top beaches for 2025!

Global (29 April 2025) – We’ve always known South Africa has some of the most breathtaking beaches on the planet but now, it’s official!

The 2025 World’s 50 Best Beaches list has just been released and Boulders Beach has claimed a top spot, ranking 12th in the world (moving up from 2023’s 40th spot). Yes, the penguins, the warm waters, the golden sand… the whole experience has captured the hearts of international travellers once again.

Here’s what The World’s 50 Best Beaches had to say about our very own slice of paradise:

“Famous for its resident colony of African penguins, Boulders Beach near Cape Town offers a unique opportunity to observe these charming birds up close in their stunning natural habitat. The beach is set against a backdrop of large granite boulders that create sheltered coves with unusually warm waters, ideal for swimming. This setting makes it distinct from other Atlantic Ocean beaches in the area, which are typically cooler. The presence of the penguins, combined with the safe, warm swimming spots, draws both tourists and locals who are looking for a unique beach experience that combines wildlife observation with leisure activities.”

But those who have visited know that Boulders isn’t just a beach; it’s an experience you’ll never forget. Warm waters, granite coves and penguins waddling past while you sunbathe? It’s unique and pure South African magic.

And we are so proud to have made the list.

The World’s 50 Best Beaches list for 2025 is a real celebration of jaw-dropping coastlines across the globe and trust us, it’s a dreamy lineup! Here’s a glimpse at the top 10 that captured the hearts of travellers and experts alike:

1. Cala Goloritzé – Italy

2. Entalula Beach – Philippines

3. Bang Bao Beach – Thailand

4. Fteri Beach – Greece

5. PK 90 Beach – French Polynesia

6. Canto De La Playa – Dominican Republic

7. Anse Source D’Argent – Seychelles

8. Nosy Iranja – Madagascar

9. Ofu Beach – American Samoa

10. Grace Bay – Turks & Caicos

It’s not just South Africa that’s shining, Southern Africa has a serious reason to celebrate. Several of our neighbours made it into the top 50 (listed above were Seychells and Madagascar but there were more):

30 – Anse Georgette, Seychelles

33 – Le Morne Beach, Mauritius

43 – Paje Beach, Zanzibar

So loads to celebrate and be proud of but how exactly were The World’s 50 Best Beaches chosen?

Well, The World’s 50 Best Beaches isn’t just a popularity contest. The team behind it, made up of seasoned travellers, beach lovers and professional wanderers, gather votes from thousands of travel experts across the globe every year. And they’re not just looking for the prettiest view. They focus on beaches that are unique, wild, untouched, teeming with wildlife and that soothe your soul with nothing but the sound of waves.

Every beach that makes the final list has to receive a vote, be verified and tick some seriously special boxes. It’s not just about hype… it’s about heart. And this year, Boulders Beach has flown the South African flag high with pride.

When South Africans back local, we don’t just support businesses… we ignite futures, create jobs and build a country that believes in its own power.

Johannesburg, South Africa (23 April 2025) – There’s something deeply powerful about walking into a space buzzing with hope, resilience and South African spirit. That’s exactly what we felt at the 13th Proudly South African Buy Local Summit & Expo, held at the Sandton Convention Centre on the 17th and 18th of March 2025.

The Good Things Guy team was there… and not just to witness the event but to find out why being Proudly South African is so important.

While there, we realised it’s more than a label. It’s a movement!

We met brilliant minds, entrepreneurs, innovators, small business owners and powerhouse executives. All committed to one common goal: building a stronger South Africa through local procurement and production.

Watch the vidcast below or listen to the podcast here.

But let’s be honest, this isn’t just a feel-good expo with beautiful booths and branded tote bags. This is serious business. South African businesses are the heartbeat of our economy. And right now, supporting local is not just “nice to have” – it’s essential.

What’s So Good About This?

Let’s break it down:

The Buy Local Summit & Expo is South Africa’s flagship local procurement campaign. With nearly 200 local exhibitors, over 1,500 delegates, and key stakeholders from both the public and private sectors, it’s more than just an event, it’s where real deals get made.

Proudly SA CEO Eustace Mashimbye summed it up beautifully: “The Buy Local Summit and Expo provides exhibitors with enhanced visibility and a captive audience that stretches beyond their geographical confines… It has unearthed many home-grown businesses and enabled them to scale up at a faster pace than they would have been able to.”

But the expo is over… so what’s next?

Well, the energy from this year’s summit doesn’t end at Sandton. It carries forward with every product you choose to buy that’s made by South African hands. Every local job supported. Every entrepreneur empowered.

Because here’s the thing: buying local isn’t about charity. It’s about choosing growth. Choosing resilience. Choosing South Africa.

And that, friends, is a seriously good thing. 🇿🇦

Luke Moir trained for years without a podium in sight but yesterday in Brazil, everything changed. The 22-year-old South African mountain biker just finished fifth at the UCI World Cup… and broke down in tears of pure joy.

Western Cape, South Africa (13 April 2025) – Sometimes sport hands us a moment that hits straight in the chest… no script, no spotlight, just pure emotion. And yesterday, 22-year-old South African mountain biker Luke Moir gave us exactly that.

Competing in the Elite Men’s UCI World Cup in Brazil, Luke crossed the finish line and secured fifth place, a jaw-dropping result on the world stage. But it wasn’t just his ranking that caught the attention of fans around the globe. It was what came after.

In a video posted by “UCI Mountian Bike World Series”, an emotional Luke can be seen trying to make sense of what just happened. Struggling to hold back tears, he says, “I’ve been training for so many years and coming nowhere… and now I’ve finished in the top five.”

His voice cracks. His head drops. And you can feel every bit of what that finish means to him. Years of grit. Sacrifice. Disappointment. Pushing through when the podium felt like a fantasy. All of it… worth it in that one unforgettable moment.

But behind that powerful moment is a story of resilience that deserves to be told.

In October last year, Luke signed a contract with a new Swiss team for 2025. He received his first bike on January 1st, and everything seemed to be on track. However, at the start of February, both Luke and the team were informed that the title sponsor had never been secured, leaving them completely stranded.

The news came heartbreakingly late in the season, making it nearly impossible to find another team. Unfortunately, no opportunities have materialised, leaving Luke without a team for 2025. Despite this setback, he remains determined to race.

And if his achievements are anything to go by, he’s got every reason to keep going.

Last year alone, Luke broke into the U23 World Top 10, was selected as a reserve for the 2024 Paris Olympics, claimed his 9th South African Championship title, and secured a World Cup podium in Canada, proving he is a world-class athlete.

Now, he’s taking the privateer route, which comes with significant personal costs. He’s hoping to raise approximately R750,000 for the year. Funds that will allow him to continue competing at the highest level, against European and American teams with multi-million-euro and dollar budgets.

“For those who don’t know me and want to know more,” Luke shares, “my name is Luke Moir and I am a professional XCO (Cross Country Olympic) mountain biker. I am 22 years old and whilst I’ve competed in a few World Cup races in the past, 2024 was my first full World Cup season in the U23 age category. I finished 8th overall in the series, with 6 Top 10 placements and a podium finish in Canada. In the World Champs, I placed 7th in the World XCC champs (short track) and 9th in the XCO champs.”

“Any support – big or small – will make a significant difference in keeping me on the world stage.”

Corporate sponsors can reach out to Ciska at ciskaaustin@gmail.com.

This is what happens when passion meets perseverance. When an athlete keeps chasing the dream, even when it seems out of reach. When a young South African refuses to give up and finally gets his moment.

Luke, we see you. We’re proud of you. And we’re cheering for everything that comes next.

South Africa is bursting with innovation, talent and entrepreneurial spirit, and one initiative has been at the forefront of celebrating and elevating these efforts – Proudly South African’s Buy Local Summit & Expo.

Johannesburg, South Africa (13 March 2025) – South African businesses are the heartbeat of the economy and supporting local has never been more vital. As the country navigates economic uncertainties, the call to support local businesses has never been more crucial.

To drive this momentum forward, Proudly South African is set to host its 13th Buy Local Summit & Expo on 17 and 18 March at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg.

With this year’s theme, “Building a Resilient Economy Through Localisation,” the event will bring together some of the best and brightest South African businesses, all committed to strengthening the local economy through homegrown talent, goods, and services.

Proudly SA Buy Local Summit 2025

The Buy Local Summit & Expo is more than just an event… it’s a movement. With nearly 200 local exhibitors spanning multiple industries, over 1,500 delegates, 450 trade buyers, and 160 key stakeholders from both the public and private sectors, it is the country’s premier local procurement campaign. This annual flagship initiative enjoys the support of key government departments, state-owned entities and private sector giants who recognise the power of investing in local businesses.

Proudly South African CEO Eustace Mashimbye emphasises the critical role local procurement plays in strengthening the economy, “The Buy Local Summit and Expo provides exhibitors with enhanced visibility and a captive audience that stretches beyond their geographical confines. Through this event, the exhibitors can expand their market reach, showcase their offerings to a wider audience, and interact with prospective customers who would have otherwise remained oblivious to their products and services. Through these exhibitions, the Buy Local Summit and Expo has unearthed many home-grown businesses and enabled them to scale up at a faster pace than they would have been able to.”

The event is structured around four key activations designed to deliver real results for exhibitors and attendees:

  • Exhibitions: A platform where local businesses can showcase their products, increase brand visibility, network with key industry players, and connect with procurement decision-makers.
  • Business Matchmaking: A structured networking opportunity that pairs exhibitors with major industry players for potential inclusion in their supply chains. “One of the biggest hurdles that stifles the growth of small to medium-sized businesses is lack of access to markets. Through matchmaking, these companies can get a foot in the door and interact with decision-makers who can enable them to scale up and take their businesses to the next level,” says Mashimbye.
  • Panel Discussions: Key industry experts will take to the stage to unpack pressing topics such as the impact of illicit trade on the economy and challenges facing the local fashion industry. The Summit will be officially opened by Gauteng Economic Development MEC, Lebogang Maile, with Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, Parks Tau, delivering the keynote address.
  • The Localisation Dinner: The grand finale of the event, where over 280 executives, captains of industry, key stakeholders, and Proudly South African Board members will come together for a night of strategic discussions, collaboration, and commitment to local procurement.

Supporting local is not just about buying a product, it’s about investing in the future of South Africa. The Buy Local Summit & Expo is a shining example of what can be achieved when businesses, government, and consumers come together with a shared goal: a stronger, more resilient economy built on homegrown success.

Mashimbye highlights the global shift towards local sourcing: “Owing to the convergence of economic, environmental, and consumer-driven factors, businesses globally have been embracing a transformative trend towards local sourcing. This strategic shift reflects a departure from traditional global supply chains towards more localised procurement strategies. By encouraging the sourcing of goods and services from nearby suppliers, businesses can play a pivotal role in fostering economic growth within their communities. This support translates into job creation, increased spending in local markets, and the development of robust business ecosystems that contribute to overall prosperity.”

The Buy Local Summit & Expo is made possible by a host of dedicated sponsors, including ABSA (headline sponsor), DSBD, dtic, Santam, Transnet, Gauteng Economic Development, GEP, South 32, SAB, AITF, Sasol, Telkom, Standard Bank, IDC, and Nestlé ESAR. Their unwavering support fuels an initiative that not only promotes South African businesses but also helps build a future where the economy thrives on local talent and resources.

South Africa is celebrating a moment of pure pride as Henk Lategan and Brett Cummings from Toyota Gazoo Racing South Africa stormed to a historic second-place finish at the 2025 Dakar Rally, conquering the world’s toughest race and proving that South African talent shines on the global stage.

Saudi Arabia (19 January 2025) – South Africa is brimming with pride as Henk Lategan and his co-driver Brett Cummings from Toyota Gazoo Racing South Africa made history, clinching second place in the gruelling 2025 Dakar Rally.

This monumental achievement is more than just a win – it’s a story of perseverance, precision, and pure determination.

The duo delivered an outstanding performance, only bested by Saudi Arabia’s own Yazeed Al-Rajhi, who claimed first place in a privately entered Overdrive Toyota Hilux. Al-Rajhi had the crowd on his feet but Lategan and Cummings ensured South Africa’s flag flew high on the podium. Securing a spot on the Dakar podium is no ordinary feat. It represents years of preparation, a deep understanding of the vehicle, an incredible team and a bond between driver and co-driver that can only be described as extraordinary.

Adding to the celebration, 6 of the top 10 cars, including that of the winner, were built right here in South Africa. The 4 Toyotas, crafted by SVR (formerly Hallspeed), and the two Century Racing vehicles showcased the unmatched engineering talent of South Africa’s motorsport industry.

The outpouring of support from fans has been heartwarming, with social media buzzing with messages of admiration.

“Congratulations! Amazing achievement and best teamwork I’ve seen in many years. Well done to every single person involved.”

“Well done to #TGRSA. Henk and Brett, you made us proud. We salute you. Congratulations on your second place, you’ve worked hard for it. Next year is yours for the taking.”

Toyota Gazoo Racing South Africa also joined in the celebrations, sharing on their official social media: “A massive congratulations to the entire #TGRSA team and to Henk Lategan and Brett Cummings for making the podium at Dakar 2025! An incredible effort from everyone involved—what an unforgettable rally!”

The Dakar Rally, often referred to as the “world’s toughest race,” spans thousands of kilometres across some of the most unforgiving terrain on the planet. This year’s edition saw competitors battling sand dunes, rocky landscapes, and extreme weather conditions in the Middle East. With each stage testing not only speed but strategy and stamina, it’s a race where survival alone is an achievement.

For Lategan and Cummings, navigating these challenges with finesse speaks volumes about their capabilities. Their Toyota Hilux endured everything the desert threw at it, proving the vehicle’s reliability and their unshakeable focus.

This achievement is more than a victory – it’s a bold statement of South Africa’s motorsport excellence, inspiring a nation to dream bigger, strive harder, and face challenges with unrelenting courage.

Well done team! South Africa salutes you!

From the hilarious South African version of the ’12 Days of Christmas’ to Silent Night as sung by the Mzansi Youth Choir, here are a few South African Christmas songs to add to your playlist this festive!

South Africa (18 November 2024) — One of the most important parts of the festive season is—without a doubt—the music. Of course, there are the giants of Christmas songs like Mariah Carey and Michael Bublé. But, if we’re being honest, there are only so many times you can hear ‘All I Want for Christmas is You’ before you never want to hear the track again. Not to mention, many of the songs from the Northern Hemisphere just don’t have that punch of relatability (it’s hard to pretend you love the snow outside when it’s 30 degrees and you’re sweating like nobody’s business). All of this brings us to an important point: what about South African Christmas songs?

Over the years, South Africans have given us many festive jingles to bop to! Some are extraordinarily catchy. Others are beyond beautiful renditions of the classics. And some are simply lekker with bells.

South African Christmas Songs to Add to Your Playlist!

12 Days of Christmas, the South African Version

For a festive giggle. Warning: this song WILL get stuck in your head for the next few weeks and well after Christmas.

Christmas in Cape Town—David Watkyns

Capetonians, this one’s for you.

Silent Night by the Mzansi Youth Choir

Get ready for all the goosebumps!

Love Runs Deeper—Lloyiso

As heard in the famous Disney Christmas ad that stole all our hearts.

An African Christmas (A Musical Masala)—The Drakensberg Boys Choir

All I want for Christmas is You—Ndlovu Youth Choir version

Move over Mariah!

Christmas Blues—The Kiffness

The festive track you didn’t know you needed.

We Give You All the Praise—The Joy

And, for a full playlist of easy-listening, feel-good festive tracks, SA singer Alani Keiser has you covered! You can check them all out, here.

Social media often feels like a battlefield, but every now and then, it becomes a playground for solutions – and when Stocard left South Africans stranded, one proudly local app stepped in to save the day.

South Africa (14 November 2024) – Social media often gets a bad rap, and let’s be honest, it can sometimes feel like a toxic jungle of negativity. But every now and then, it reminds us of its power to bring people together, spark solutions, and showcase the incredible things happening around us.

This is one of those stories—a story of community, innovation, and a proudly South African app that just made my life a whole lot easier.

If you’re a fan of loyalty cards, you’ll know they’re great for discounts, access to specials, and rewards. The downside? Carrying around a card for every shop in the mall is enough to make anyone want to ditch the whole idea.

Enter “Stocard,” a digital solution that lets you store all your loyalty cards in one app.

It was a lifesaver for years… until it wasn’t.

A few weeks ago, while standing in a queue waiting to pay, I opened Stocard only to be greeted with a notification that the app was shutting down. Stocard had partnered with Klarna a few years back, and now they were fully merging. The catch? Klarna doesn’t support South Africa. In fact, you can’t even register unless you’ve got an international mobile number.

Frustrated (and caught off guard), I tweeted about it. Or I “Xed” about it. Whatever… I posted about it on the app formerly known as Twitter. It was one of those moments where you’re venting into the void, not expecting much to come of it.

But then something amazing happened.

My good friend Byron Rode replied a few days later with a link to an app he’d built in just a few days. Yes, in days!

This proudly South African app called “store(my)cards”  is a simple, sleek solution to store and use all your loyalty cards. It’s free for up to five cards, and if you’re like me and have a ton of them, you can unlock unlimited storage for just R29.99 once-off. The app is available on the Apple Store right now and on Android in the next 14 days.

No subscriptions, no hidden fees—just one lekker app that does the job beautifully.

Even if you weren’t a Stocard user and were still carrying physical cards (and probably a very heavy wallet), this app gives you an option to simplify your life. And the best part? It’s local. By using it, you’re supporting South African innovation and keeping money in our economy. Also, I need to add that this isn’t a sponsored post—it’s just me wanting to share something that’s genuinely helpful. Loyalty cards are a small part of everyday life, but when you’ve got a good solution for them, it makes a big difference.

So why is this a good thing? It’s a reminder that when faced with a problem, there’s always an opportunity for someone to step in and make things better.

It’s that “n boer maak n plan” energy. And that’s the kind of energy we need more of – people who see a gap and fill it with something meaningful.

So, if you’ve been wondering how to replace Stocard or want to streamline your loyalty card collection, give this proudly South African app a try. It’s proof that good things are happening right here at home—and that’s a win worth celebrating!

*Some users have reported that they have not received the “shut down” notice yet, but Stocard has confirmed that the Stocard app will be shut down for all users (eventually) as they have merged with Klarna. On a Q&A on their website, a user asked if they could keep using Stocard or if they have to move to Klarna, and the company responded with:

“No, the Stocard app will be shut down and you will need to use the Klarna app for storing and displaying your loyalty cards.”
