Running for a reason! SPCA legend Sarah Van Heerden and her daughter Alex are dedicating the Ultimate Human Race to pavement specials.

Kloof, South Africa (29 May 2025) — The Kloof and Highway SPCA’s Sarah Van Heerden is a champion of underdogs. While you might think all shelter pets are underdogs, there are still levels to underdogship. Some dogs get adopted quickly, while others wait for months if not years, simply because they’re pavement specials or senior animals.

But Sarah and her daughter, Alex want to change the narrative around these invisible animals while giving them a boost, and they’re using the Ultimate Human Race as a means to spread their message on behalf of the entire SPCA team.

Sarah is no stranger to pushing her body to extremes for the betterment of animals. Last year, she cycled an incredible 1,600kms over a weekn in the Western Cape to raise funds for forgotten animals and managed to fundraise over R120 000 for the SPCA and its services.

How will she fare at the Comrades? Well, this is her 14th time doing it!

Sarah and Alex will run specifically for the pavement specials in an effort to support sterilisations. Sarah hopes to make 60 sterilisations possible, which will cost around R30,000.

“Every Comrades runner matters, just as every animal in our community matters,” Sarah says.

“I am a below average, untalented jogger, I am just another runner, but if my finish counts for anything, let it be a finish making a different to JUST another brown dog.”

You can support Sarah and Alex via their fundraiser, here.

Any and every sad or distressed puppy is in safe hands when Eunice Mgandela is around. Her boundless love was captured in a recent video showing Eunice tucking a puppy snugly inside her jacket and playing calming music to soothe its cries.

Kloof, South Africa (22 April 2025) – It takes a very special person with a very special heart to give endless love to the unloved.

Eunice Mgandela is one such person. She works as a dedicated Puppy Run Supervisor, tasked with the very important job of taking care of all the puppies at the Kloof and Highway SPCA.

She has helped socialise, home, and love thousands of puppies since 2014 when the Puppy Run was first built for the little furbabies in need of an extra loving touch.

“Eunice is their surrogate mother and loves each and every puppy that comes through her doors,” Kloof and Highway SPCA said.

A recent video shows Eunice “kangaroo mothering” a severely distressed puppy that had been put into the Puppy Run this week.

She shared how she placed the puppy in her jacket and played him some nice music to calm him down and to help him miss his mom a little less.

This little soul, although friendly and full of kisses, had been crying nonstop, and Eunice decided that the only way to work and console her new baby was to make a plan.

“I couldn’t handle his screams, crying for mommy. So I decided to be his mom…I feel sorry for this baby,” shares an empathetic Eunice.

Needless to say, there was no more crying as he lay warm and snug in Eunice’s jacket!

For so selflessly looking out for vulnerable and defenceless pups, Eunice, you are truly an angel on earth!

After a heartbreaking seven months, a tiny Chihuahua named Dexter has been miraculously reunited with his family after running off into the sugar cane fields of Shongweni.

KwaNdengezi, South Africa (16 February 2025) – In the touching words of the Kloof and Highway SPCA: Some moments are good, and then there are moments that just take your breath away!

What began as a heartbreaking story of a dog that went missing in July 2024 has unfolded into the most emotional moment that has greatly touched our hearts.

Seven months ago, a social media post went out appealing to anyone who may have seen a tiny, long-haired tan and white Chihuahua named Dexter in the Summerveld/Shongweni area who had managed to escape off his lead.

Dexter was last seen in the hundreds of acres of sugar cane, and while people searched and posts went out, there was no further word of his whereabouts.

“Many of us wondered, speculated, and still hung onto a tiny glimmer of a chance that he would be found,” Kloof and Highway SPCA said.

And their hope was not in vain! On Wednesday, 12 February—almost seven months after Dexter’s disappearance—the SPCA received a tip-off about a dog matching Dexter’s description living in the KwaNdengezi area.

“The excitement and elation that we felt was palpable. Without hesitation, Field Officer King Ndimande, Inspector Brigitte Ferguson and Manager Sarah Van Heerden headed to the property and low and behold a kind lady came out carrying a smaller, thinner and dirtier Dexter, still in the same halter he was wearing in July 2024!”

The dog’s owner was informed of the good news that Dexter was found and safe! A moment we imagine, moved her to tears.

“We know tonight Dexter is sleeping in bed with his owner, and the last seven months will be a distant memory.”

The SPCA expressed gratitude to the kind family who cared for Dexter during his time away, highlighting the compassion that ultimately led to this happy ending.

Two friends, both named Sarah, have proven that friendship is truly sweet, especially when it’s used to help animals in need. These besties, sharing not only a name but also a deep love for animals, decided to combine their forces for good.

Kloof, South Africa (11 February 2025) – The gift of friendship not only affords us the opportunity to build bonds and create lasting memories, but it is also truly food for the soul! And to have a bestie who shares your name and your love for animals is just twice as nice!

In a super sweet coincidence, two friends named Sarah and Sarah decided to put their heads and hearts together to help support a great cause – championing the welfare of animals who have endured undeserved hardships.

Recently, they have held several fundraisers for the Kloof and Highway SPCA selling sweets and biscuits at a local stall, persuading their community to not only give in to their sweet cravings but also contribute towards voiceless animals in need. Together, they have managed to raise R2,000 to go towards the support of all the animals.

The animal society serves a vast area, from Westville to Cato Ridge and the surrounding communities. Their tireless team works year-round, covering thousands of kilometres to rescue animals from abuse and neglect and bring those responsible to justice.

The girls’ sweet fundraising efforts will greatly assist in covering their many expenses.

It’s a heartwarming reminder that even small acts of kindness, when done with love and shared with friends, can make a difference.

“Thank you Sarah and Sarah for choosing to support our SPCA and what a great feeling knowing our younger supporters are getting more and more involved!

“Feeling grateful for all of the love and support we are given by our community and of those supporters,” thanked the Kloof and Highway SPCA.

Two young heroes, James Malan and Bryce Muzzell, proved that kindness and animal welfare know no age limit! When they spotted a distressed Duiker caught in a cruel snare at Giba Gorge, they didn’t hesitate to reach out for assistance.

Outer West Durban, South Africa (27 January 2025) – Whether hooved, pawed or clawed, far too many animals suffer through human cruelty beyond our understanding.

In a heartwarming reminder that you’re never too young to become a custodian of our precious wildlife, thanks to two young animal warriors, James Malan and Bryce Muzzell, a Duiker was relieved from unimaginable pain and spared a terrible fate.

After being spotted in great distress in Giba Gorge caught in a snare. The two boys knew exactly what to do and did not hesitate to contact the Kloof and Highway SPCA immediately for assistance.

The animal welfare society’s Inspector Kerrie Andrews and Inspector Petros Simamane arrived to find the boys patiently waiting for them and directed them to the spot where the Duiker was.

“The Inspectors checked the Duiker and it appeared to have no wounds other than some hair loss near the site of the snare.

“The Duiker was given a long-acting antibiotic and set free to live the rest of its life, thanks to James and Bryce who showed kindness, love and compassion,” the SPCA said.

The compassion and quick thinking of these two extraordinary youngsters is certainly something our world could do with a lot more of. Well done, James and Bryce!

The Kloof and Highway SPCA recently faced an overwhelming admission of abandoned animals during the festive season, with over 750 animals entering their care in December alone. But this determined team has chosen to look at the brighter side of their anti-animal cruelty mission.

Kloof, South Africa (21 January 2025) – The festive season has been a strenuous and rather gut-wrenching period for the champions of animal welfare down at the Kloof and Highway SPCA compound.

With over 750 abandoned, unwanted and stray animals entering their doors in just December alone, staff have been devastated and exhausted, to say the least.

But, instead of dwelling on trying to comprehend the cruelty they have witnessed and endured, the Kloof and Highway SPCA have chosen to focus on the positives. These include many happy adoptions, successful clinic cases and a supportive inspectorate department that has continued to open cases and make sure that cruelty isn’t tolerated.

The welfare society also takes this moment of gratitude to thank its supporters who frequented the Thrift Shops, brought their families through to the Tea Garden and chose to adopt instead of shop for a new pet, ultimately giving them a happy home.

“We also thank those of you who decided to donate your second-hand items so that we can continue to raise the monies necessary to continue the invaluable work we do.

“You chose to support our cause. Were it not for our amazing community which provides the light at the end of the tunnel it would be times like these that would break an animal welfare organisation. However, we know with you by our side supporting us through 2025 we will be stronger in our fight against animal cruelty,” the SPCA thanked.

A most unusual ordeal saw a dog (later named ‘Wheelie’ for reasons that are about to make sense) end up trapped in a tyre rim in Hammersdale. Thanks to the animal champions at the Kloof and Highway SPCA, the poor girl was swiftly rescued and is following the doc’s orders to enjoy serious rest and naps in the sunshine.

Kloof, South Africa (16 January 2025) — They say that curiosity killed the cat, but curiosity also seemed to give one dog quite a hard time recently in Hammarsdale. Last week, a man realised that he had a visitor on his property who had found herself in some trouble. To the furthest degree of surprise, the resident had to likely do several double takes to confirm that said visitor (the dog) had ended up trapped in a most precarious way: in the rim of a tyre.

Perhaps it is a case of curiosity, or perhaps some other mysterious event. Either way, the man who found the pooch didn’t ask too many questions and instead called the Kloof and Highway SPCA with haste to get the dog help he couldn’t provide on his own.

“Field Officer King Ndimande and Inspector Lindo Mbele rushed straight to the property not knowing quite what to expect,” recount the SPCA.”Our Clinic team had been alerted as well as our Maintenance team in case they were needed to assist.”

When the dog arrived at the SPCA base in Kloof, she was met with expert care from the team’s vet, vet nurse and the inspectors to sort out the tyre rim debacle while the pooch lay sedated to keep her safe. Thanks to their teamwork, she was quickly freed!

Since the tyre trap, the dog has reportedly been in much better spirits spirits; enjoying rest in the sunshine and love from her new friends at the SPCA.

She’s also gotten a new, fitting name: Wheelie!

From pet food donations to monetary contributions, the Kloof and Highway SPCA has been overwhelmed by the generosity of the community which has made their invaluable work possible.

Kloof, South Africa (17 October 2024) – With a heart filled with thanksgiving, the Kloof and Highway SPCA recently took to social media to thank its selfless supporters for continuously pouring into their cup.

The animal rescue recently acknowledged and thanked everyone who generously donates to their worthy cause which serves as a lifeline to countless animals in need.

“Often those who donate and help the most never ask for a ‘thank you’. We want you to know how much we appreciate your support always,” the organisation said.

The SPCA’s staff and volunteers have also been working tirelessly to spruce up the space and tea garden, creating a haven for animals, a place where they can find love, care, and a second chance at life.

“Our dog walkers have ensured that our goats have an enrichment area, and some volunteers helped do a garden in our Village Green.

“We have also had some wonderful students come and do community service and help us too. Donated plants are sold in our nursery, and your unwanted donated goods keep our charity shops stocked.”

Whether it be through donating unwanted household goods, pet food, volunteering or monetary donations, none of these developments would be possible without the generosity and kindness of animal lovers who don’t think twice about supporting the incredible work of assisting vulnerable animals.

Despite almost losing hope, the Collings family was reunited with their beloved dog, Rain, after a heartwrenching two-year separation.

KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (21 August 2024) – Losing a pet can be heartbreaking because they become cherished members of the family, forming strong emotional bonds that can be difficult to disconnect from. Something that the Collings family knows all too well.

On the day their dog, Rain disappeared, they received reports of someone seen with her and another of a dog resembling Rain being sold. Despite these leads, the Collings family yearned for their beloved dog who had vanished two years ago.

The loss of Rain devastated the Collings family, as she was a cherished and joyful member of their household. Their grandchildren used to spend hours playing with her as she reportedly loved balls.

Although heartbroken and starting to lose hope, the family’s lingering faith was not in vain as their prayers were finally answered.

On Tuesday 9 July, Kloof and Highway SPCA Field Officer Sipho Mkhize received a call about a stray on the road, to which he responded.

“On returning to the SPCA, the staff immediately scanned her for a microchip, and much to their relief, she was chipped. You can imagine the surprise, the relief, the disbelief, and the excitement that Mr. Collings experienced. He must have been overwhelmed with so many emotions.

“Mr Collings and his son arrived to see and collect Rain, and no words will do justice to how everyone felt seeing this reunion,” Kloof SPCA reported.

With a big smile and a wagging tail, Rain was just as excited to be reunited with her owners and to be back playing ball.

Now, this is a happy ending that has us fighting back tears! While there is no knowing what Rain’s life was like over the last two years, we know her future is filled with love and happiness with the Collings.
