Two young heroes, James Malan and Bryce Muzzell, proved that kindness and animal welfare know no age limit! When they spotted a distressed Duiker caught in a cruel snare at Giba Gorge, they didn’t hesitate to reach out for assistance.

Outer West Durban, South Africa (27 January 2025) – Whether hooved, pawed or clawed, far too many animals suffer through human cruelty beyond our understanding.

In a heartwarming reminder that you’re never too young to become a custodian of our precious wildlife, thanks to two young animal warriors, James Malan and Bryce Muzzell, a Duiker was relieved from unimaginable pain and spared a terrible fate.

After being spotted in great distress in Giba Gorge caught in a snare. The two boys knew exactly what to do and did not hesitate to contact the Kloof and Highway SPCA immediately for assistance.

The animal welfare society’s Inspector Kerrie Andrews and Inspector Petros Simamane arrived to find the boys patiently waiting for them and directed them to the spot where the Duiker was.

“The Inspectors checked the Duiker and it appeared to have no wounds other than some hair loss near the site of the snare.

“The Duiker was given a long-acting antibiotic and set free to live the rest of its life, thanks to James and Bryce who showed kindness, love and compassion,” the SPCA said.

The compassion and quick thinking of these two extraordinary youngsters is certainly something our world could do with a lot more of. Well done, James and Bryce!
