The Friends of Muizenberg Park have restored a treasured stream for the community, earmarking a one-of-a-kind celebration, the Stream Party!
Muizenberg, South Africa (31 July 2024) — It’s not every day a local stream gets thrown its own party, but for the Friends of Muizenberg Park and the larger Muizenberg community, one main character stream is well worth all calls for celebration.
The treasured stream in Muizenberg Park now flows proudly as the product of community care and effort led by Friends of Muizenberg Park (FOMP)—a long-anticipated response to the environmental havoc it previously faced.
In February, FOMP shared the fantastic news that they’d gotten the green light to embark on their Stream Project—a mammoth task that aimed to restore Peck’s Stream from alien vegetation.
Given Muizenberg Park’s big space in community members’ hearts (not least for its beauty but also its reputation as an ecological haven), the restoration efforts were warmly welcomed by many who recalled the stream as pristine.
Before the restoration, Peck’s Stream was rife with alien flora harmful to its ecosystem. But after a lot of concerted efforts, John Venn of FOMP shares that the stream has been cleared and is flowing strongly once again as “quite a sight to see”.
“The first phase of the project included removal of alien vegetation, clearing of silt from the ponds in the stream and planting hundreds of fynbos wetland plants along the now-cleared banks,” John explains, adding that all the new plants are native to the Cape Peninsula including two critically endangered species.
Additionally, a plant that acts as a food source for caterpillars of the critically endangered Cape Flats ranger butterfly has also found its place in the ecosystem—an effort that will hopefully have a butterfly effect of good.
“The stream clearing has not only created a conservation opportunity but has also improved the attractiveness, safety and recreational value of the stream and its surrounds. The park has come alive with activities such as playdates, yoga classes, wedding photos and more,” John shares.
With the restoration being a big call for celebration not only of the renewed stream but also community efforts, FOMP are hosting a Stream Party—an event for the whole family.
From racing toy boats that’ll head down the stream to hot drinks, home bakes, and even an Origami workshop, the day is set to be filled with lots of life.
If the event is rained out on Saturday, it will be moved to Sunday the 11th.
