With unprecedented challenges in the current economic climate, the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital faces a crisis in keeping afloat while meeting the demands of vulnerable wildlife needing urgent medical care.

Johannesburg, South Africa (29 May 2025) – A lot is happening in the world, and it saddens our hearts to learn that the suspension of foreign assistance to South Africa has affected those who need all the support to, in turn, help the voiceless and vulnerable.

The Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital (JWVH) is facing a serious financial crisis as a result of these unforeseen changes in the economy.

“We’ve been forced to dip into our emergency reserves just to keep our doors open.

“Meanwhile, the number of wild animals needing urgent medical care continues to grow,” JWVH said in a post.

JWVH has been a lifeline for countless wildlife animals that have found themselves in situations requiring emergency intervention.

Having celebrated eight years of existence and impact in March of this year, JWVH has done incredible work saving and rehabilitating pangolins, raising Aardwolves, healing porcupettes, mending snakes, and educating us about mole rats and all the other magnificent creatures!

The one-of-a-kind non-profit treats indigenous animals for free, and therefore relies heavily on donations to keep doing the good work they do.

Amid the current wave of uncertainty, the veterinary hospital’s dedicated team is doing all they can, but without support, many wildlife and their well-being will be in jeopardy.

“If you can support us through a donation, a sponsorship, or by connecting us with someone who might be able to help, please reach out.

“Every contribution, even simply sharing this post, makes a difference,” the JWVH team appealed.

The Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital is celebrating wildlife patient number 15,000, along with eight wild and wonderful years of impact!

Johannesburg, South Africa (18 March 2025) — It’s almost too big of a number to fathom—15,000 wildlife patients. Most of us will only ever witness a handful of wild animals, let alone help save thousands of them. But this is what the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital does and does well. And now, they’re celebrating not only patient 15,000 ( a tiny hatchling Nile monitor), but eight jam-packed years of making positive change for animals.

The Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital (JWVH) is one of a kind. With community support as its backbone, this team of experts in Jozi treat indigenous wildlife at no cost—from tiny critters to endangered species.

That’s eight years of life-saving moments, finding solutions to complicated problems and making sure that the wildlife patients return back to their natural homes when they are strong enough.

Many of these patients are those who have looked poachers in the eyes and come out on the other side thanks to the vets’ hands and those who have narrowly escaped the clutches of the illegal wildlife trade.

Reflecting on the massive milestone, the team shared:

“Over the years, we have treated everything from tiny bats to powerful raptors, delicate antelope to endangered pangolins – each case presenting unique challenges and groundbreaking medical successes.

“Just as our medical work in the hospital has saved individual lives and contributed to veterinary advancements in wildlife medicine, so our advocacy work in the court rooms across the country has led to better protection and greater awareness around the plights and rights of these animals, helping to shape the future of conservation-focused animal care.

“This journey would not have been possible without the unwavering support of our sponsors, donors, volunteers, and the broader conservation community. Your generosity and belief in our mission allows us to continue breaking new ground in wildlife veterinary care.”

To these ends, the lion-hearted team have given every case their all. From saving smuggled tortoises to rehabilitating pangolins and helping Springboks win their lives back, we salute their years of incredible work and look forward to many more yet to come.

You can keep up with their wild and wonderful journey here and support their efforts here.

The Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital team gave poached tortoises and terrapins, caught up in the illicit wildlife trade, a fighting chance at a good life after the team intercepted their sale.

Johannesburg, South Africa (12 February 2025) — Rescued tortoises and terrapins are getting the time they need to heal and recover following the unfortunate time the animals spent caught up in the illicit wildlife trade.

Thanks to the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital team and the SAPS JHB K9 unit, an incident in which the poached and smuggled animals were treated as goods for sale, was intercepted. The tortoises and terrapins are believed to have been poached near Lesotho, and are now in the care of the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital.

According to the team, the animals were “crammed into a rucksack together, were all very dehydrated and in various stages of starvation.”

The wildlife healthcare professionals got to work in treating the animals for different injuries like claws that ripped out in attempts to escape. Dehydration was also addressed, with little marsh terrapins like Rusk, named for his dehydrated state, said to be making steady progress in their recovery.

Other victims included leopard tortoises and an older Spekes Hinged tortoise.

“The illicit wildlife trade not only imposes significant costs on South Africa, affecting its economy, biodiversity, security, and international reputation, but is a horrifically cruel crime with animals suffering terribly as a result of this human greed,” shared the team.

As for the accused caught selling the animals, they are expected to appear in court today.

When Siya and Nolu were little springboks, they went through a terrible ordeal on account of illegal hunting. But, like our beloved rugby team, resilience reigned supreme, and the two won their lives back.

Johannesburg, South Africa (16 January 2025) — As spring spread softly across South Africa in 2024, so too did unscrupulous activities that would impact the world of wildlife. For two little springboks, late September brought with it a terrible ordeal that saw them become victims of an illegal hunting operation. But, by the skin of their teeth, they managed to survive.

In fact, they were the only survivors of this operation’s interception by boots on the ground. Found in an awful state in the back of a van, the good guys made sure the lambs’ next stop was a hopeful one and got them to the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital (JWVH).

The JWVS recounts their first time meeting Siya and Nolu (who they fashionably named after the Men and Women’s rugby captains and champions) as a helluva experience.

“Their state of terror was indescribable,” the team explained.

But if there was ever a team up for a healing mission of great proportions, it’s the JWVH crew.

The hospital’s animal care team put all efforts into ensuring the lambs were looked after and put on the road back to health. Given their tender ages, the little Springboks were also hand-raised but with minimal human imprinting.

All these months later Siya and Nolu are champions in their own right, who won their lives back!

“Today, they stand strong as a testament to resilience and compassion, ready to be released back into the wild where they belong,” the team report.

Watch: Siya and Nolu, a Story of Hope

Despite their happy ending, the fight is still ongoing to hold perpetrators of illegal hunting, with dogs accountable. While the court case against those behind the operation unfolds in 2024, the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital asks that everyone wanting to take a stand consider contributing something small to the upcoming court case and to the care for animals like Siya and Nolu.

“Your R100 is a huge support to our efforts in wildlife conservation and assists us to be a voice against poaching and cruelty.”

You can support Siya, Nolu and animals with cases like theirs here.

A tiny bushbaby named Pebble was found at around just 10 grams, making him the smallest bushbaby patient the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital had ever helped. His story of hope and healing has since gone viral and has been shared across the world!

Johannesburg, South Africa (06 January 2025) — Back in early 2023, a minuscule bushbaby affectionately named Pebble stole hearts across Johannesburg! Good Things Guy shared his tale back then with many animal-loving readers. Now, we’re thrilled to report that Pebble’s story and updates have been picked up by The Dodo, striking virality and the world’s eyes on the team who made his survival possible!

To recap, Pebble weighed about as much as a handful of birthday candles when he found his way to the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital. He’d been caught by a cat and ended up out in the open at risk of huge danger. Initially taken in by Zwartkop Animal Clinic, Pebble soon reached JWVH who welcomed him in as the smallest bushbaby patient they’d ever had at the time.

A Mohol or Lesser Bushbaby, Pebble needed a lot of help in picking up size.

Thanks to supplement milk formula, mealworms, and round-the-clock care from the team, especially Lauren Beckley and Ashleigh Pienaar, Pebble’s odds of survival looked promising. Considering how little life had begun, things easily could’ve gone the other way for the tiny bushbaby.

At around two to three weeks old, the team felt confident in Pebble’s growth. He’d started becoming more adventurous too and developing his own personality!

After around three months with Ashleigh, Pebble went into his soft-release phase. Pebble got to adjust and learn important skills about being a bushbaby at this juncture—critical before a proper release.

All these months later, Pebble can be seen positively flourishing. He now has his own crew of bushbabies to hang out with, a family of his own.

His story could’ve easily ended back out in the open when he was only 10 grams, but life and kindness had different plans for Pebble.

After his story was shared by The Dodo, it received nearly 177 thousand likes and thousands more views. This is incredible for the JWVH in getting more eyes on their work, spotlighting their efforts not just to South Africa but the world.

“Since Pebble, we have raised and successfully released many more of these little primates, and we are thankful that we can give hope to even the smallest creatures,” reflected the JWVH.

Thanks to the amazing team at the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital, Peggy, Cleo, and Rachel, 3 female Temminck’s Pangolins, have been given a second chance at life.

Johannesburg, South Africa (05 December 2024) – A story of hope and conservation recently unfolded as 3 pangolins returned to the wild thanks to the passionate wildlife heroes at the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital.

Over the past month, they have had the privilege of releasing three female Temminck’s pangolins back into the wild—each one a testament to meticulous care, expert rehabilitation, and unwavering dedication.

These extraordinary creatures, named Peggy, Cleo and Rachel, are some of the most trafficked mammals on Earth. Now, the armoured wonders have a second chance to thrive where they belong.

A video shared online shows the trio undergoing medical assessments and treatment before being released into their natural habitat – a major feat that underscores the incredible impact of wildlife rehabilitation.

In 2022, the veterinary hospital received a massive investment into the work they do. As a result, they opened the first-ever dedicated Pangolin Veterinary Ward, with thanks to Investec at an undisclosed location.

The medical staff stresses the message that all pangolin patients are housed off-site at an undisclosed location to protect them and all the medical staff. Due to the animals being in high demand, they cannot risk anyone knowing where the animals are being treated.

“None of this would be possible without the support of those who share our vision—a future where no species is beyond saving.

“Your support is the backbone of our efforts. By committing to financial sponsorship, you ensure that stories like these continue to inspire and that the fight against wildlife trafficking remains strong,” thanks the Veterinary Hospital.

The Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital has many mouths to feed as Spring also means baby season, and they have lots of wild babies!

Johannesburg, South Africa (19 November 2024) – Spring has brought with it the beautiful sound of birdsong, rumbling thundershowers (if you are Highveld/Lowveld-based) and lots of adorable baby animals. However, quite a few of them are ending up at the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital where they are being cared for until they can be released back into the wild. That means a lot of little mouths to feed!

While the vets do everything they can to save as many animals as they can, they can only go as far as their bank account allows. Feeding little growing creatures can add up, so the team took to Facebook for a helping hand in filling the bellies of all the little birds, bats, cats and even small bucks. They say it’s never a dull moment at the vets and having been there to see it first-hand, I can second that!

“Summer is definitely here and so are all the new born baby creatures.
Our staff are working around the clock to keep up with all the hungry mouths.

We have many tiny baby birds, bats, genets and even a blesbuck and two springbuck (to name but a few).
Diets vary and we aim to please at our hospital (read hotel)!

Not only do we provide insects, dead prey items, fresh vegetables and fruit, but we also have a range of specialist diets and milk replacers to ensure the best nutrition for each species at our practice.

We have an impressive 31 different species in our hospital at the moment!”

“The photo shows Elaine feeding a hatchling Cape wagtail with one of our specialist diets – EmerAidVet. A fast growing little fluff ball like this needs the best nutrition possible to guarantee optimal health and wellbeing.

Our food bill is astronomical every month, especially in summer.

We would really love some help with the feeding costs of all the hungry hoards.”

The team treat indigenous wildlife free of charge, relying solely on the support of the community. If you would like to get involved, you can find details below or check out the website here.

Spooky, sweet and a wildlife patient’s treat! The Johannesburg Veterinary Hospital’s pumpkin carvings competition didn’t disappoint; leaving us in awe of the carved creations!

Johannesburg, South Africa (01 November 2024) — Spooky Season has officially come to an end, leaving behind another successful year for South Africans who were unafraid to let their creativity loose. While some sank creative claws into putting together costumes, others brought out their talented talons to carve pumpkins like it was nobody’s business. For one Wildlife Veterinary Hospital, pumpkin carvings didn’t just make for an epic excuse to get creative; it also made for a fantastic opportunity to gift their wildlife patients a spooky-inspired treat while raising funds for the team who care for them.

The Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital decided to make the most of a task people do inevitably during Spooky Season and hosted a pumpkin carving competition to pay the effort forward.

And boy, the efforts did not disappoint!

From Scary SpongeBob to a paw-printed pumpkin, a Hogwarts-inspired ‘kin and the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital’s Dassie-approved owl creation; people pulled out all the stops.

While there could only be one winner (and a strong top-3), everyone who participated made a difference to the service the Wildlife Veterinary Hospital provides thanks to their entry-donations and of course, treats for the wildlife patients.

Have a look at the Winning Pumpkin Carvings

The overall winners were Team FORA (Friends of Rescued Animals)

Second place went to Emma Ferreira

Third went to Team Santek Industrial Abrasives

Pumpkin Carvings

And a special shout out to the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital’s Wendy Willson who carved this beauty!

The Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital has helped tens of thousands of indigenous animals for free over many years of impact! This spooky season, they’ve got a delicious fundraiser on the cards that anyone who loves pumpkin carving won’t want to miss.

Johannesburg, South Africa (16 October 2024) — For over seven years, the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital has helped tens of thousands of animals free of charge.

The first facility in South Africa to treat and rehabilitate the endangered Temminck’s pangolin and the team who have given many indigenous wildlife creatures a second chance—especially in cases of poaching or where animals have been a part of the wildlife trade—the impact of their work cannot be understated!

This October, the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital carved out a clever fundraiser to support their hospital and continue the life-changing work they do. If you’ve ever wanted to carve a pumpkin creatively or do so as tradition, this is your sign to grab a pumpkin and get carving for a cause!

JWVH are inviting everyone who wants to support their work to carve either a spooky or cute pumpkin. The top 3 pumpkin carvings will win themed cakes for any spooky season celebrations; while the animal patients in their hospital will get to enjoy a pumpkin treat!

Everyone who enters will purchase a ticket at R100 (the fundraising portion of the gig), and one ticket permits one entry. Any kind of pumpkin variant is welcome. Once the carving is all done and you’ve taken a photo, drop off the pumpkin at the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital (101 Macgillivray Road, Midrand) between 9 am and 2 pm during the week before 29 October at 5 pm when the entries close for the patients to enjoy.

Winners will be announced on 30 October and the top pumpkin creators will get to enjoy their cake winnings on 31 October onward; just in time for any Halloween-inspired parties.

You can secure your entry spot here, and don’t forget to email a photo of you with your pumpkin’s final look to info@jwvh.org.za!

The Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital has launched a video series sharing the treatment of a Southern African python – giving valuable insight into how the team works.

Johannesburg, South Africa (10 June 2024) – The Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital is dabbling in a new medium to share updates on its patients and we love it! The team have started filming video interviews and following the vets as they treat indigenous animal patients. The first is Marapo, a 4.2m Southern African python (Python natalensis) rescued in Limpopo, found in a critical condition and rushed to the hospital.

Marapo was found near a water trough where she was nearly motionless. When she got to the vet, she was very weak, and at one point, the team thought she had died. She was severely dehydrated, about 8kgs underweight and covered in lacerations and burn scarring.

The team suspect she was burned in a veld fire, caught in a fence and, when she found water, got too cold to keep moving. Her rescuer, Arthur Roden, had the honour of naming her Marapo, which means ‘the boney one’. He got her to the vet just in time!

“We would like to share her journey of recovery with you in a series of short videos.

Tonight is just the beginning and her strong spirit is already apparent!

Thank you Arthur Roden for saving her.”

Dr K is still worried about her, despite her perking up after her initial treatment. They plan to share more videos in this series so be sure to follow along here for more.

The video gives a fascinating insight into treating snakes for illness and injury. You can watch the video below:

The team treat indigenous wildlife free of charge, relying solely on the support of the community. If you would like to get involved, you can find details below or check out the website here.
