Who has to worry about Jolene when there’s a tractor named Betsie on the scene? A hilarious ‘interview’ revealed a love triangle we hope other spouses of farmers can’t relate to.

Somewhere on a Farm, South Africa (23 May 2025) — “I know men ‘aren’t allowed to cry, but there were times when she pulled me through the drought. When I was weak she was strong for me.” You’d be forgiven for thinking these to be the words of a doting partner, and in some ways you’d be right… if said partner was a farmer and if the ‘she’ was a tractor named Betsie. A hilarious advert recently played up a farmer’s true love triangle, and we’re not sure if it’s going to increase tractor sales or cause a series of ‘we need to talk’ moments.

In the advert, a farmer named Gerrie sits down with his wife to talk about love. However, things start to take a turn for the comedic when the audience realises he’s talking about his love for Betsie the tractor, while his wife thinks his loving words are about her.

“I can’t imagine life on the farm without her,” could’ve been a great way to show love to your wife Gerrie, but it just had to be about Betsie, didn’t it?

If this ad is relatable to those married to farmers, let us know in the comments (and please let us know how you deal!)

Meanwhile, in other videos that made us giggle this week, an American tried his first Grand-Pa in a bid to relieve a headache. Unfortunately for him, the local pain reliever might’ve given him a whole new flavour of headache in what has become a public service announcement not to try your first Grand-Pa in the powder format, without water and or if you’re not built like a South African. Have a watch, here.

A South African staple versus an American with a headache. Recently, a South African-in-training put a Grand-Pa to the test. And we all know who won…

South Africa (20 May 2025) — It’s hard to fathom that most of the world beyond South Africa doesn’t instinctively raid their cupboards for a Grand-Pa when a headache or hangover strikes. But, in case you didn’t know, the pain relief staple is actually a South African brand (which is probably why your foreign co-workers keep looking at you weirdly when you ask them for a grandpa whilst clutching your head in pain, wondering what an elderly man could possibly do to help).

In a recent hilarious video, American Addi Logan decided to put Grand-Pa to the test.

You might recognise Addi from another hit video that depicted his review of South African desserts! While Addi’s dessert taste test saw South African treats (at least most of them) pass with flying colours, the same couldn’t be said for the pain-reliever.

Armed with a glass of water and a look of concern in his eyes, Addi embarked a little too bravely with the powder version of the product. He shared that his wife doesn’t take her doses with water (a true South African), before proceeding to attempt his own dose water-free.

Now, nobody has ever accused Grand-Pas of tasting like icing sugar. So it wasn’t unusual for Addi’s face to morph into a look of disgust when he threw the powder into the back of his throat (we couldn’t help but laugh —someone help this man!).

He then attempted to infuse it with water, which, once again, left his face morphing and South Africans trying not to laugh.

Needless to say, this might be the American’s last shot at looking to Grand-Pa for relief. However, several South Africans raced to the comment section to defend the staple, with some suggesting Coca-Cola as the key factor and others expressing that “This is how Home Affairs knows you’re not ready [to be a South African].”

South African comedian Schalk Bezuidenhout is training for his first-ever Comrades. And, he’s learnt a lot from the utility of the word ‘tapering’ when you don’t know what else to say to the wise sages of Comrades past who seem to relish in acting as vague as a fortune cookie of fear and advice. Watch Schalk’s hilarious take on it all:

South Africa (18 May 2025) — South African comedian Schalk Bezuidenhout is among the many rookie racers preparing to take on the upcoming Comrades Marathon for the very first time. And, amid the many lessons Schalk has learned (like how far 80kms actually is and why the word ‘tapering’ is a fast ticket to sounding like you know what you’re talking about in a group of runners), he’s also interacted with the ‘Comrades Fortune Cookies’.

A Comrades ‘Fortune Cookie’ is someone who has completed the race and proceeds to give a rookie runner vague, alarming, and somewhat riddled advice, including (but not limited to) “After halfway, you find out who you truly are.”

Schalk recently made some updates on his training, with a video dedicated entirely to the ‘Comrades Fortune Cookies’ and their scary warnings.

“They will make it their mission to put the fear of God in you. They’ll go, ‘oh is it your first Comrades?’ and you go, ‘yeah no it’s my first one, I’m very excited’. And they’ll go (with an expression as if they’ve just seen a ghost), “I remember my first one… good luck, that’s all I can say. Good luck. And then they run into a bush and disappear forever,” remarks Schalk.

The comedian even hilariously compared these sages to Dumbledore from Harry Potter, who never really let the kid know what was actually going on but made sure to give vague warnings at a whim.

We’re cry-laughing: A travel blogger recently attributed South African destinations to the different tropes of exes, and if you’ve ever dated a Camps Bay, we’re so sorry!

South Africa (23 April 2025) — There are few things better than finally being over a break-up and being able to look back—rose-tinted lenses removed at last—with humour. The fights that once seemed so big are now laughable, the confusing antics are comedy, and all the nonsense that once was the norm is now a meme you can quietly chuckle about in the sanctuary of your peace. Recently, we found ourselves cry-laughing at the accuracy of a travel blogger’s humour—a batch of content dubbed ‘If South African destinations were your ex’.

With inspiration from other creators in tow, travel blogger Lauren Melnick (@thewanderlustmovement) attributed some of South Africa’s best-known destinations to different tropes of exes—and if you’ve ever dated a Camps Bay, we’d like to formally apologise for all the headaches you endured.

Per Lauren, here’s who your ex would be if they were a South African destination or Cape Town neighbourhood:

Camps Bay:

“Hot. Empty. Emotionally about as deep as a puddle on a sunny day. Sys he’s “not like the other guys”, but still make you hike. Will cheat on you and make you pay for parking.”

Drakensberg:

“Spiritual. Grounded. Took you on hikes to “connect” then ghosted you to do ayahuasca in Peru.”

Durban:

“Vibes only. Zero ambition. Still lives with his mom and thinks ‘going with the flow is a personality. But he can cook.”

Hout Bay:

Hot and feral with a dash of family drama. Grew mushrooms. Had a weird obsession with his dog. Told you he is “anti-establishment” but lives in a gated estate.”

Llandudno:

“Gorgeous. But emotionally cold and hard to reach. Literally. Like, there is no Uber. Only texts you at sunset. You thought it was intimacy. It was just good lighting.”

Mpumalanga

“Gave ‘soft life’ at first. But also? No signal. No communication. Just vibes and vibes alone.”

Plettenberg Bay:

“Pretty. Fun. Cheated on you with his ex over New Years.”

Stellenbosch:

“Rich. Pretentious. Pretends to read. Took you wine tasting one and quotes Nietzsche unironically.”

If you’ve seen a buffalo stuck in a tree, a suspiciously fluffy frog on the prowl or news of the Chuckles cryptocurrency, you’d be forgiven for wondering what the heck is going on. It’s April Fool’s, and here are some of our favourite funnies this year:

South Africa (01 April 2025) — Every year, April Fool’s Day comes around to give us all a good giggle and to remind us not to be too gullible. The prankster’s favourite day; a little egg on the face and some creative storytelling should be expected (though make sure you get confirmation that something is in fact a joke unless you want to giggle at the news of your friend getting fired mistakenly, only to realise no fiction was present). This year, there have been a few top-tier funnies (at least, we hope they’re just jokes) doing the rounds—from buffalos stuck in trees to Chuckles cryptocurrencies.

A Buffalo Pulled a Katniss Everdeen and Avoided His Fate in a Most Suspicious Spot

Buffalos are known for many things, but climbing trees isn’t one of them. An ‘amazing sighting’ by Rynhardt Ferreira of a buffalo wedged in a tree to avoid some hungry lionesses is an amazing sight indeed, not unlike a flying pig. Perhaps the buffalo drank a little Redbull, earned some wings and flew to his hiding spot. We hope he’s okay now.

A Super Leopard Dragged a Baby Elephant Up into a Tree; Defying Gravity at its finest

Another curious case of tree lurking was shared by Latest Sightings—Kruger today; this time spotlighting a baby elephant who was reportedly saved by its mother.

The sighting, tinged by ‘Dr Ei Eye AP Fowls’ comes with an action-packed story too as to how a leopard with the kind of strength that’d rival a superhero somehow dragged the baby elephant up into the branches before the baby (that miraculously balanced itself without falling) was saved by its mom.

You can read all about it here.

Furry Frog Hops Through the Streets of Social Media

A ‘Whiskered Moss Frog’ was brought to the South African Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre against all odds after being found in a suitcase.

The SAWRC team went all out in giving this fictional frog story some meat, including describing its size, habitat, cultural significance as the ‘Forest Whisperer’ in local cultures and even a backstory as to how he came to their centre (you can find the full post, here).

The gag was revealed at the end of the post, reminding us all to read thoroughly before believing something. Despite ‘Whiskers’ the frog’s fictional existence, there are real animals that the team support who could use a little boost in funding. You can support them in honour of Whiskers, here.

Wait Till the Finance Bros Hear About Chuckles Crypto

While we’re pretty sure Woolworths is joking (just as they did when they released the Chuckles Beauty line last April Fool’s), we wouldn’t be mad if there was a world in which we could pay for things with Chuckles Coins.

Woolies announced its new chocolate currency today, and the internet ate it up!

Sea Water for Sale?

We seriously hope this is a joke.

Today, Sea Harvest asked its audience a question that we’re sure no one wanted to know the answer to: “Why settle for ordinary hydration when you can sip on the pure, salted, untamed essence of the sea itself?”.

Well, apparently they’ve got a new drink available—’Sea Harvest Sea Water’, ‘hydration as nature intended.’

Lions Are Earning Their Keep These Days

In ‘breaking news’ from the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, lions are reportedly earning their keep by contributing to park maintenance as employees.

Leo is now a receptionist, Max is your guy for all things pool related, and if pipes are giving you problems, Mufasa’s on WhatsApp.

Meanwhile, EskomSePush shared that Mxit is coming back. It could be an April Fool’s gag, but we may only know tomorrow if it’s real or not. Take a read here.

Which April Fool’s funnies fooled you at first? Let us know in the comments!

Students from Sasolburg High School surprised their teachers by asking them to autograph old photos of themselves, and the video went viral with over two million views!

Sasolburg, South Africa (03 March 2025) — Most of us are familiar with the burning curiosity that comes with wondering what someone else looked like back in the day. In the same breath, most of us are also familiar with hoping that no one from our present lives ever sees those old photos of our Mohawks, questionable choice of moustache or ‘before I knew how to do my makeup properly’ phases.

However, in a trend that’s swept across the streets of social media in recent months, old photos have made a big comeback, and with them, many giggles.

From the red carpet to big media events across the world, everyone from Reese Witherspoon to Paris Hilton and Chris Evans has been asked to sign photos of themselves that had not seen the light of day in years.

In South Africa, learners from Sasolburg High School recently tried their hand at the trend and went viral at over two million views for their edition of the fun.

The learners dug into the archives to find their teachers ‘back in the day’ photos before surprising their educators by asking for autographs, and the reactions are priceless.

There’s a simple and scrumptious cheese muffin recipe video doing the rounds, and South African’s can’t get enough. With non-fussy ingredients and sprinkles of down-to-earth humour, here’s what the hype is all about!

South Africa (11 February 2025) — South Africans like our recipes the way we like most things: simple and sprinkled with humour. This is why the viral Cheese Muffin Recipe shared by content creator Mandy Meyer (‘Running 4 Meyer’) is one that locals return to time and time again!

Because a good recipe doesn’t have an expiration date, the 2022 video is doing the rounds once again. Part of Mandy’s ‘Not Kak Fancy’ series, the Cheese Muffin Recipe is prefaced as being neither kak nor fancy, and what more could a busy South African ask for?

Passed down from grandmother to grandmother, the recipe requires only humble ingredients and utensils. Heck, you can even use a fork if you don’t have a whisk like Mandy did.

The best part about these cheese muffins though, is definitely Mandy’s commentary. Loyal followers of Running 4 Meyer know that Mandy rarely shies away from a giggle-worthy moment. Because of this, she’s managed to make a lot of nutritional content that’s equal parts informative and entertaining.

Though we’re not sure how Martha Stewart would feel about the recipe, we’re certainly fans of its down-to-earth, anyone-with-an-oven-can-do-this appeal.

Watch: The Cheese Muffin Recipe South Africans Are Obsessed With

Beyond cheese muffins made-simple, Mandy has a ton of other videos, food ideas and funny takes to share. You can keep up with Running 4 Meyer on Facebook, Instagram or TikTok.

If there’s one thing we know about South Africans, it’s that we’ll find humour in almost anything—even that which irks us most. One social media recently put together a list of ‘South African sounds that’ll traumatise you’, and we’re cry-laughing:

South Africa (27 January 2025) — South Africans will find humour in almost anything. Whether it’s a situation that ticks us off or a sound that drives us up the wall and through the roof, you can bet your bottom Rand that there’s a local who has made a joke about it. In the case of specifically South African sounds, that’s another chapter in the ‘annoying things South Africans still find funny’ book. Recently, one social media user took the time to compile some of South Africa’s most ear-scratching, chord-striking sounds for South Africans, evoking a ton of laughs thanks to its relatability.

But, viewers of the video took things a step further, adding a few special mentions to South Africa’s cacophony.

These are the funny sounds that will only strike a chord with South Africans:

The Hadeda Alarm Clock

The Hadeda’s wails are South Africa’s alarm clock. We all know it. We’ve all started our days because of it. And no matter where in the world we move to, we’ll never forget it.

Whether it’s the good old-fashioned natural hadeda in the wild of your garden or a hilarious remix, this is a sound that many South Africans love to hate and, in some cases, hate to love.

Generator Groove

There’s a special place in the darkness of loadshedding where the sound of a generator switching on lives. If you’re lucky, it’s your generator. If you’re not, it’s your neighbours that act almost as the sound intro to a movie you’re not invited to watch but must listen to the sound of others enjoying it.

Taxi Symphony

There’s an art to the taxi hoot. It rarely comes in singularity, and it is always fashioned staccato-style. Persistent yet passionate, the sound of a taxi’s cry has a unique kind of power that sees taxis transcend the rules of gravity, physics and the road.

‘My Fellow South Africans’

A special mention from viewers: this is the start of a sentence we all have etched in our brains. President Ramaphosa, a mask over the eyebrows and a fed-up nation are all tied together by this one set of words, and whether it evokes a giggle on the other side of the pandemic or a feeling of respect, one thing’s for sure: when someone says ‘My fellow South Africans’, ears perk up.

The Carte Blanche Intro Song

Another special mention is that this sound made sure you knew it was Sunday. While for many, the Carte Blanche intro song signalled ground-breaking journalism, for generations of school-goers, it also meant it was time to do that last-minute homework or ask your friend what you were supposed to study for Monday’s test.

What are the sounds only South Africans will relate to that you can think of? Let us know in the comments!

Giggle warning: wrapping up the sentiment of how resilient and humourous locals are when it comes to adversity is ’12 Days of Christmas, The South African Version’, as sang by a Joburg newsreader!

Johannesburg, South Africa (10 December 2023) — One thing about South Africans, what might be considered stressful to one nation is an opportunity for song (and laughter) in ours. Summing this sentiment up aptly and in festive tune, is ’12 Days of Christmas, The South African Version.’

Beautifully sang by  newsreader Maneo Motsoeneng on radio station 919, the tune is a giggle-worthy version of the popular Christmas carol that wraps up the many things locals dealt with this year—from success stories to scandals and all the potholes in between.

“Where the traditional lyrics mention lords a-leaping, swans a-swimming and geese a-laying, our version includes potholes lurking and hailstorms hailing. Instead of a true love, we have an X (formerly Twitter) crush, and obviously we had to replace four calling birds with hadedas. As for the three French hens and two turtle doves, we have three mayors and two fake doctors,” share the Joburg-based station who are well aware of what their listeners have endured this year.

While much of the content surrounds Joburg-based events, the sentiment of finding the humour in adversity is wholly South African.

“Having a sense of humour is essential for maintaining good mental health in the face of so many daily frustrations and fears. The news by its very nature, is often a source of distress, anxiety and anger…but we can manage how we tackle each and every day,” says the station’s Dr Sarah Britten.

“Life in Joburg has lots of frustrations, but if we can laugh about them, it helps,” she adds.
