South African comedian Schalk Bezuidenhout is training for his first-ever Comrades. And, he’s learnt a lot from the utility of the word ‘tapering’ when you don’t know what else to say to the wise sages of Comrades past who seem to relish in acting as vague as a fortune cookie of fear and advice. Watch Schalk’s hilarious take on it all:

South Africa (18 May 2025) — South African comedian Schalk Bezuidenhout is among the many rookie racers preparing to take on the upcoming Comrades Marathon for the very first time. And, amid the many lessons Schalk has learned (like how far 80kms actually is and why the word ‘tapering’ is a fast ticket to sounding like you know what you’re talking about in a group of runners), he’s also interacted with the ‘Comrades Fortune Cookies’.

A Comrades ‘Fortune Cookie’ is someone who has completed the race and proceeds to give a rookie runner vague, alarming, and somewhat riddled advice, including (but not limited to) “After halfway, you find out who you truly are.”

Schalk recently made some updates on his training, with a video dedicated entirely to the ‘Comrades Fortune Cookies’ and their scary warnings.

“They will make it their mission to put the fear of God in you. They’ll go, ‘oh is it your first Comrades?’ and you go, ‘yeah no it’s my first one, I’m very excited’. And they’ll go (with an expression as if they’ve just seen a ghost), “I remember my first one… good luck, that’s all I can say. Good luck. And then they run into a bush and disappear forever,” remarks Schalk.

The comedian even hilariously compared these sages to Dumbledore from Harry Potter, who never really let the kid know what was actually going on but made sure to give vague warnings at a whim.

Get ready for all the giggles! Themba Robin has taken to the wild (AKA, South Africa’s roads) for a hilarious skit profiling South Africa’s sneakiest predator —the speed camera:

South Africa (25 August 2024) – Comedy legend Themba Robin has left South Africans in stitches once again following one of his latest skits profiling our country’s sneakiest predator—the speed camera.

Not obvious like a pothole or predicable like loadshedding, this relentless beast moves in mysterious and concealed ways. While the speed camera—or the ‘roaming velocitus photographicus’ according to Themba—certainly has its necessary place in the ecosystem of our roads, it is also the nemesis of those running late across the country.

Themba hilariously takes us through an encounter between the roaming velocitus photographicus and ‘the employeus unpunctualus’ amid the ‘7 am herd’ in the kind of wildlife docu-narrative fashion that’d make Sir David Attenborough proud.

A tale of hunter and prey and the odds against the system, Themba’s satire never fails to turn even the most rubble-worthy headache into comedic gold.

From a constable detective to a rising comedy star! Many of us know and love ‘Antie Katriena’, but the spotlight also needs to shine on the alter-ego character’s creator—former cop Warren Louw and his inspiring story of ‘seeing opportunity’ when times looked hopeless:

South Africa (25 April 2024) — You’d be forgiven for wondering how one goes from a former SAPS detective constable stationed in Hondeklipbaai in the Northern Cape to a rising comedy star making the internet laugh. For Warren Louw, the answer lies in ‘seeing the opportunity’ to follow your dreams.

When the Covid-19 lockdown had “everyone sitting at home on their phones”, former policeman Warren saw the chance to provide entertainment, and what would eventually become the beginning of his journey as a comedy star thanks to his alter-ego character ‘Antie Katriena”.

In 2019, Warren resigned from his job and decided to move to Cape town to further pursue his dream of an acting career. He’d secured an agent, was attending castings and auditions and had just begun living out what he had always wanted to do, until lockdown put things on hold and sent him home to Namaqualand.

Stuck at home in Fonteintjie outside Springbok, Warren realised that social media could be his golden ticket. This was where Antie Katriena started to steal the spotlight!

Warren began posting his characters straight-talking and humorous commentaries on life, as well as the doings of her wayward son Waarhen.

He gained a 70,000 strong Facebook following during lockdown, which has only grown since then. In amazing news for the comedy star, when gatherings were allowed again, the local municipality booked him to MC an event!

“It was my first paid job, and I realised I could make a living out of this,” said Warren.

Fast forward to many more bookings, festivals, radio shows, national television, weddings and even as the prime choice of character to celebrate newborn babies; Antie Katriena has become Namaqualand’s favourite auntie.

Today, Warren now has his own business where he is able to employ part time workers. His dreams today are now to establish a drama school and theatre to get the youth of Namaqualand off the streets and into developing a passion for the performing arts.

He has also recently graduated as one of the top 3 students in the Small Business Academy (SBA) of Stellenbosch Business School—an initiative to empower small business owners in low-income communities with education and ongoing mentorship as fully sponsored by the university’s business school.

His advice to fellow would-be entrepreneurs? “If you’re struggling, remember your ‘why’. and don’t start your own business for money but for the love of your work.”
