Another day, another reason to be proud of Tyla. Our superstar is hosting the 2025 Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards!

Global (16 May 2025) — If breaking pop culture barriers was a South African, it has to be Tyla.

Following what has already been a jam-packed year for the superstar (she’s done and dusted the MET Gala, claimed the title of World Artist of the Year, rocked Coachella and surpassed one billion streams for ‘Water’, to name a few), it’s officially been announced that Tyla is set to host the 2025 the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards!

This will be the very first time that a South African will be hosting global coverage of the Kids’ Choice Awards.

Known for bringing a fun, childlike and slimy spin to traditional award ceremonies, the Kids Choice Awards orbit (you guessed it) kids choosing their favourites in the entertainment world.

From voting for the Kid’s TV shows that they love the most to artists and even villains, there are a plethora of categories for up-and-comers as well as industry veterans to vie for the most unfiltered opinions around—that of children.

As such, hosting such a widely publicised and A-lister-centric ceremony is no small gig. It speaks volumes about our firecracker’s popularity around the world and places her in good steed to get even bigger hosting opportunities (we’d hardly be surprised to see Tyla host the Grammys one of these years).

The Kids’ Choice Awards will be live and airing on 21 June.

Meanwhile, in more Tyla news, her latest track, ‘Bliss’, is out, proud and ready for you to listen to!

It wasn’t just Tyla who represented SA at the latest Met Gala. Amid the dandy and dreamy looks gracing the gala, a strong few were actually the work of South African designers.

Global (07 May 2025) — Fashion’s most publicised affair has come and gone, leaving behind an influx of new looks for fashion enthusiasts to dissect, praise and emulate. The aftermath of the Met is upon us, and this year, South African designers also had a ball in adding their creativity to the dandy and dreamy.

This year’s theme was Superfine: Tailoring Black Style. Essentially, it was a love letter to Black dandyism and one of the best years (couture-wise) that the famed gala has had in quite some time. Blazers reimagined, boater hats abound, and we saw Rihanna reign supreme, Laura Harrier wow crowds and Blackpin star Jennie absolutely dazzle.

Additionally, it also marked one of the years in which the theme was largely followed and respected compared to other themes in which onlookers gazed at the gala with confused expressions, unsure as to whether the assignment of a theme was understood.

Especially exciting for South Africa this year is the news that South African designers had their work dazzle at the dandyist event of the year.

Of course, representing South Africa with the biggest spotlight circling her was Miss Tyla, who, to no one’s surprise, was stunning.

Tyla donned Jacquemus this year in a stripy number emulating old-school glam with a tailored edge. Her blonde hair was also the moment, drawing attention to another sub-section of the theme—the art of styling the details.

Tyla continues to make South Africa beam with pride. Her latest career feat? The track that put her on the map, ‘Water’, has officially surpassed one billion streams on Spotify; making her the first African solo artist to achieve this, ever!

Global (21 February 2025) — Success and South Africa’s Tyla continue to come as a package deal to the point where it’s hard to remember a time when the world didn’t know who the Jozi singer was. With numerous achievements under her belt already, the superstar adds another thanks to the news that her smash hit and the track that put her on the map, ‘Water’, has officially surpassed one billion streams on Spotify!

Not only is this the kind of accomplishment dreams are made of for any artist, but it is also one that’s put Tyla in the history books (again). She is the first African solo artist to achieve this, ever!

Fun fact:  Tyla’s “Water” also made history when it became the African song to achieve both Platinum status and double Platinum status in record time.

“Tyla’s success is an inspiration to aspiring artists across Africa and the world,’ remarked Phiona Okumu, Head of Music at Spotify.

Other achievements from the 23-year-old include winning a Grammy, becoming the first South African to win a VMA (Video Music Award), and as of recent, her first British Vogue cover!

Meanwhile, in other news where South African musicians made us say ‘No DNA, just RSA’, Wouter Kellerman added yet another Grammy to his tally thanks to his win at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards!

From lore to demure, the top words for 2024 each have their own sprinkle of ‘Rizz’. Here are the 6 words up for the coveted title of 2024’s Oxford Word of the Year!

Global (20 November 2024) — If you haven’t said demure this year, have you even spoken at all? Or how about sneaking in a ‘here’s the lore’ every time you need to provide a juicy bit of context to a situation? If you’ve used either of these words in 2024, congratulations—you’re (probably) chronically online. But if you haven’t, it might be in your best interest, especially if you ever encounter a Gen Z in the wild, to brush up on what the kids are saying. After all, these are two of the 6 words competing for Oxford’s Word of the Year we’re talking about!

There are fierce contenders for this year’s top word; each with its own sprinkle of rizz. The good news is that there’s still time to vote for the word that you think should wear the crown and take on the baton from the likes of ‘rizz’ (2023) and ‘goblin mode’ (2022).

The Top Words of the Year Shortlist

  • Lore (n.): A body of (supposed) facts, background information, and anecdotes relating to someone or something, regarded as knowledge required for full understanding or informed discussion of the subject in question.
  • Brain rot (n.): Supposed deterioration of a person’s mental or intellectual state, especially viewed as the result of overconsumption of material (now particularly online content) considered to be trivial or unchallenging. Also: something characterised as likely to lead to such deterioration.
  • Dynamic pricing (n.): The practice of varying the price for a product or service to reflect changing market conditions, in particular, the charging of a higher price at a time of greater demand.
  • Demure (adj.): Of a person: reserved or restrained in appearance or behaviour. Of clothing: not showy, ostentatious, or overly revealing.
  • Slop (n.): Art, writing, or other content generated using artificial intelligence, shared and distributed online in an indiscriminate or intrusive way, and characterised as being of low quality, inauthentic, or inaccurate.
  • Romantasy (n.): A genre of fiction combining elements of romantic fiction and fantasy, typically featuring themes of magic, the supernatural, or adventure alongside a central romantic storyline.

Voting will remain open for two weeks, closing on Thursday 28 November. The Oxford University Press will conduct a last detailed analysis, considering corpus data, votes, and public commentary on the finalists, before naming the definitive Word of the Year for 2024 on 2 December!

You can cast your vote here.

If you can’t find a Time Machine, you can always cruise back to the past with a little music. We can’t believe these songs turn 10 this year (because 10 years ago feels like it should still be the 90s) but here we are. Now let’s take you back to 2014!

Global (14 January 2024) — Cast your minds back in time. The year is 2014. Skinny jeans rule the world. Instagram is still for posting photos of your highly filtered breakfast, and the Disney film Frozen ruled the world (and every parent’s nightmares).

Ipad kids were only just getting started, and if you weren’t dreaming about attending Tomorrowland, what were you doing?

It seems like another lifetime—one we’re not entirely sure can be referred to as a simpler time (the 2010s were filled with new discoveries). But, it was a priceless part of history, the coming-of-age era for many millennials and a time most of us can look back on fondly with equal doses of cringe and nostalgia.

If you’ve caught yourself longing for the early 2010s lately, there’s one very simple way to time travel back. Zero time machines required! Blasting the beats of the past has always had a profound effect on putting us back in a different space and time, and so we’re throwing it back to 2014 by celebrating 10 iconic mainstream songs turning 10 in 2024:

1. Happy — Pharrell Williams

2. All of Me — John Legend

3. Shake it Off — Taylor Swift

4. Summer — Calvin Harris

5. A Sky Full of Stars — Coldplay

6. Runaway (U & I) — Galantis

7. Rather Be — Clean Bandit

8. Chandelier — SIA

9. Drunk in Love — Beyonce and Jay-Z

10. Fancy — Iggy Azalea ft Charli XCX

Sometimes when our minds feel super busy, there’s a little culprit that lives at our fingertips to blame. This Free Therapy Sunday, we’re focusing on influencer culture and how to get our mental freedom back:

Global (19 November 2023) — In the last decade, our ability to be influenced by others reached massive proportions. ‘The age of the influencer’ outdid mainstream media platforms in ways no one could’ve imagined before social media became a household term. But, with over a decade of the influencers’ age to look back on and learn from, the effects it has had on our mental states has become a very heated topic. Cue the deinfluencing trend!

When the deinfluencing trend started popping up earlier this year, it embraced an obvious sense of irony. A trend telling us not to trend? Still, many people found that its impact was hugely necessary and its concepts long overdue.

From its core definition, the deinfluencing trend refers to people who review what influencers are pushing or have pushed people to purchase, alongside mainstream trends. They then debunk all the hype around these products as former purchasers themselves, mostly with the intention to communicate authenticity, their own experiences and save the most-influenced people from low to middle-income circumstances, money.

But, it also led to a deeper stream: the heavy toll that being told what to buy and who to be from all angles of society has on our minds.

Many of the self-described deinfluencers shared their personal experiences of what it is to live your life under the thumb of influence. As TikTok creator Christina Mychas shared, “I was so insecure and unsure of myself what I wanted/what I actually liked that I just bought into these trends.”

Other social media users shared that the culture of influencing pried on their senses of self-worth; making them feel smaller, more disconnected from others and mentally exhausted.

As the deinfluencing trend grew, it extended not only to boot what we are told we ‘need’ to own to be part of a certain community, but why the best trend you can actually follow for your mental sake, is discretion.

Why Influencer Culture Effects Our Minds Negatively

  • A constant state of comparison
  • A sense of self-worth that’s tied to materialism
  • Less trust in our own choices
  • A reward system and dopamine influx that are activated from watching others showcase the lives we aspire to have, instead of acting on our own efforts to make it possible which perpetuates instant gratification
  • Anxiety caused by ‘information/content overload’
  • Disconnection from our real lives and communities

What We Can Do About It

Understand the ‘Psychology of Influencing’

When we really understand that influencers play on a lot of psychological gaps to sell their lifestyles, we become way more aware (just as people have with mass media) of the parts of ourselves we need to give extra love to. This can look like focusing on things like our personal insecurities by healing them and understanding why they exist instead of adding another product to a cart that won’t fill what’s ‘missing’.

When influencer culture is seen for what it is (whether professional or from someone who unknowingly has taken on influencer tendencies), trusting in your own decisions and wants becomes a lot easier.

Parent Yourself with Your Social Media Habits

The less time you spend on social media, the more time you’ll have cut out to focus on the things that are actually fulfilling! Remember that the grass grows where you water it.

Focus Less on How You’re Perceived

So much anxiety has come from tiny screens, and so much of the time it’s because we worry about how we’re perceived by others. Humans are social beings, but we were never meant to have quite so much access to each other’s worlds. Instead of focusing on how you’re perceived, focus on what you perceive: your own ideas, creations, dreams and the story of your life, for no one other than yourself.

Take the Time to Set Your Own Standards for Your Life

Whip out the vision board, grab your favourite happy snack and start being intentional with your decisions! When you have a plan and you know what your self-set standards are, you become a lot less susceptible to being influenced unless it aligns with where you’re trying to get to.

If spending money on aesthetic restaurants with no other intention beyond showing people you went there has become a habit, it’s time to re-evaluate. Could that money be used for the business you want to start? For the dog you want to adopt? Or for a hobby that might bring no one else but you immense joy?

Remember, if it isn’t paying your bills, you have no business acting like an influencer (or spending like one, for that matter). Deinfluencing your mind means stepping back from endless external influences and stepping into your own power.

Trends come and go faster than ever, but your own sense of self-worth is like a good perfume: timeless.

Westlife couldn’t have given South Africans a better welcome!

Cape Town, South Africa (03 November 2023) — Westlife might be Irish in heritage, but they certainly earned South Africa’s approval for reasons beyond music or being 2000s icons, thanks to stage-wear that read (and ignited) the room in the best way possible.

At their Cape Town show (which local fans have been counting down the days toward since the band’s Wild Dreams tour dates were announced), the lads united in none-other-than Springboks jerseys on stage. They also performed one of their biggest and most heart-tugging songs in them—filling GrandWest with the pride of a nation.

The gesture earned them a wealth of respect from fans, with one concert goer titling the moment they sang their hit ‘You Raise Me Up’ in the jerseys: ‘when winners recognize winners’.

@dr_shol When winners recognize winners 🏆 #westlifeforever #springbok #bokke #drshol #winnerscircle ♬ original sound – Dr Sholena Narain

This effort was even more significant considering the Ireland-South Africa battle match during the Rugby World Cup where, for a good few days, our two nations weren’t exactly best friends.

Westlife will now meet more South Africans in Pretoria for their performance this evening, 3 November.

Meanwhile in other Springboks’ proud news, a fan who caught the attention of 702 at OR Tambo International Airport at the massive homecoming gathering for her Bokke ‘fit had done a lot more than adorn creative pieces to celebrate the Boks. South African Germarié De Villiers trekked all the way from her home in Italy to welcome the Springboks home, using up her savings to get there just for the homecoming event.

And, in more Irish-South African feel goods, budding singer Niamh Beatrix Smith (who united SA and Ireland right after the heat of the clash) has released her first original song and dedicated it to South Africa!

South Africa’s Lloyiso teamed up with none other than Martin Garrix recently to create an epic love anthem, a huge milestone for our artist!

Global (26 September 2023) — 2023 has been a year that South African singer-songwriter Lloyiso Gijana can easily dub one of many musical milestones. From lighting up Times Square in New York City earlier this year to being the voice behind a self-compassion mantra, ‘Give a Little Kindness’ that reminded the world to water our own inner gardens, Lloyiso’s musical trajectory continues onward and upward. So, when it was announced that he had released a song with none other than EDM icon Martin Garrix, it powerfully indicated Lloyiso’s recognition in the music industry.

Dutch DJ Martin Garrix and Lloyiso teamed up to collaborate on what will likely be a summer anthem for anyone in love or well on their way—’Real Love’.

A huge moment for the artist who hails from the Eastern Cape and hopped into the spotlight after braving Idols SA followed by internet virality, Lloyiso shared, “I’ll always be grateful for this moment.”

Leading up to the moment though, was a lot of hard work, teamwork, friendship and what Lloyiso calls ‘the craziest journey’.

According to multiple sources, Martin Garrix had discovered Lloyiso online doing covers and “was immediately blown away by his amazing voice”.

Eventually, the pair met in New York City and spent time listening to live music and heading to bars together. They then hit the studio and recorded 3 songs in a single session.

As for ‘Real Love’, the song navigates the spaces between upbeat pop and dance energy and soulful vocals, intricately highlighting both Garrix’s renowned production finesse and Lloyiso’s voice without one overshadowing the other to the foreground of a simple, one-sided conversation that’ll speak to masses.

Taylor Swift’s records have spun a new world record for the singer who now has the most No.1 Albums for a female artist AND has seen four of them top the same chart at the same time.

Global (18 July, 2023) — Swifties are celebrating Taylor Swift even more than they already do after the artist made musical history.

Thanks to her album ‘Speak Now (Taylor’s Version)’ spinning to No.1 on the Billboard 200 chart, Swift now has four albums dancing in the Top 10 stream at the same time—the first time a living artist (male or female) has done this since the ’60s.

Swift also became the female artist with the most No.1 Albums in history as she celebrates 12 No.1 albums in her career, ushering in a new era for the record previously held by Barbra Streisand.

Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) is the third instalment of the Taylor’s Version movement, and all songs were written by Swift making the album’s success even more personal.

Taylor’s Versions Really Said ‘Speak Now’ to Artists Everywhere

If you’re wondering what Taylor’s Versions are, they’re something of a creative reset and nostalgic ode to many of Swift’s era-defining hits. However, beyond the artistry of revisiting old loves, the revamps were also Swift’s response to claiming agency over her own work amid a masters handover headache.

She sat down during the pandemic and re-record her versions as a kickback to corporate handlers profiting enormously off her work and as a sign for other artists to feel empowered in their own creative agency.

Her recent moment in musical history then, is more than a nod to her as an artist but also a future where artists have more creative ownership.

South Africa’s Ayanda Thabethe walked away from the Miss Supranational pageant with a title win for her inner beauty—our kind of award that just goes to show South African personalities are gorgeous!

Global (18 July, 2023)—In the world of glitz, glamour and pageantry accolades, there’s something so positive and impactful about an award that honours inner beauty. South Africa’s Ayanda Thabethe recently won the title of Miss Congeniality at the Miss Supranational global competition in Poland—a title dedicated to inner sunshine, kindness, friendliness and a gorgeous personality.

Thabethe radiated from the inside out throughout her journey to the international stage and made it to the Top 24 of the Miss Supranational pageant.

Although she didn’t walk away with the Miss Supranational crown this time round, her coveted personality title win in the world of pageantry is a fabulous recognition for the one kind of beauty that never goes out of style. It’s also a reminder that South African personalities are quite literally award-winning.

Sorry, Sandra Bullock, you’ve got competition for our favourite Miss Congeniality!

Still, South African energy was felt on the international stage in a big way this year as now former Miss Supranational title holder Lalela Mswane handed over her reign to Ecuador’s Andrea Aguilera.

Meanwhile, young pageant holders also made big moves recently after winning Little Miss Planet crowns after a lot of hard work to get to their moments in the spotlight.
