If anyone had told rising rugby star Ntokozo Makhaza that he would one day be included in the Springbok alignment squad camp, he would have looked at them and laughed. But his hard tackles and sprinting tries have propelled him forward, bringing the incredible possibility of one day wearing the green and gold for South Africa within reach!

Cape Town, South Africa (28 May 2025) – Hailing from the small town of Harrismith in the Free State, Ntokozo Makhaza grew up playing a lot of soccer, but that soon changed when he was introduced to rugby in primary school, probably the very best thing to happen to him!

He currently plays for the UCT Ikeys Tigers as a wing and fullback and has recently become one of South Africa’s most exciting young rugby prospects.

Makhaza was for the second time named Player of the Year as well as Backline Player of the Year in the recent Varsity Cup season. But that is just the tip of the iceberg for the young player’s promising career, as he recently was informed that he has been included in the 54-man Springbok alignment camp!

The 23-year-old admitted that receiving the news came as a surprise, and that he couldn’t help but wonder if it was legit. However, once it was confirmed, Makhaza shared that he was nervous and excited for the opportunity to level up his game.

“I was very surprised that I’m part of the camp. A bit nervous, but excited. I’m just happy and motivated to see that people are watching and monitoring varsity rugby. It inspired me to believe more that the dreams I have are possible,” Makhaza tells UCT, where he is a Bachelor of Social Science student.

In another major step in his already impressive rise, Makhaza will also join the Free State Cheetahs in July for the upcoming Currie Cup season, affording him the opportunity to contribute to rebuilding a team that’s investing in youth.

“They’re giving youngsters a chance, and I want to make the most of that,” he says.

“It’s about learning, growing, and giving my best.”

With every opportunity that comes this rugby player’s way, Makhaza’s main focus remains on soaking up everything he can at the Springbok alignment camp, something he never imagined even in his wildest dreams.

“If anyone would say I would be part of the Springbok alignment camp a few years back, or even at the beginning of this year, I would have looked at him and laughed.

“To me, it’s an honour and I’m privileged and humbled. I think it’s been created by the coaches and players because of the opportunity and platform they gave me. I’m humbled and excited for the opportunity,” shares a grateful Makhaza.

The rugby world mourns the passing of beloved legend Cornal Hendricks, who tragically passed last week. Among the many heartfelt tributes, self-taught artist Ricollin Moodley, known as Ricollinart, created a breathtaking portrait of Hendricks using only lipstick.

Wellington, South Africa (20 May 2025) – Our nation lost one of its talented and well-loved rugby legends, Cornal Hendricks, last week from what is believed to have been a heart attack.

According to SuperSport, Hendricks, who was diagnosed with the heart condition late in 2015 and missed several years of rugby because no team would take the risk of playing him with the condition, was finally given the chance to return to the rugby field for the Vodacom Bulls in 2019.

More than just a rugby star, Hendricks has had a great impact in Western Cape communities through the Cornal Hendricks Foundation, which is rooted in strengthening communities by encouraging, empowering and enabling young people to become the best they can through its programmes.

Many have paid tribute to the fallen rugby legend, and among them was talented South African self-taught artist, Ricollin Moodley, widely known as Ricollinart on his social platforms.

Known for his creative and unconventional art mediums, Ricollinart captured a video of himself breathing life onto canvas as he crafted a most beautiful portrait of the former Springboks wing, made entirely with different shades and hues of lipstick.

In the clip, each skillfully drawn line, stroke, shade, and colour-fill impressively captures the striking resemblance of Hendricks and the essence of life that has won over hearts, gave his all on the rugby field, earned 115 caps and scored 34 tries across all competitions.

“Tribute to rugby legend Cornal Hendricks. Rest in peace, legend,” Ricollinart said in his Instagram post.

As Hendricks is laid to rest this Sunday, we extend our deepest sympathies to all who knew and were inspired by this remarkable athlete.

Some lucky little rugby enthusiasts had a day they’ll never forget when DHL Stormers hooker, Joseph Dweba, took a special moment just for them!

Cape Town, South Africa (13 May 2025) – You know it is a special day when you get to meet your favourite rugby star and get to rub shoulders with them too!

DHL Stormers hooker Joseph Dweba was captured on video, making several little fans very happy when he took a moment to interact with them.

In the clip shared by Vodacom United Rugby Championship, Dweba is seen greeting the fans seated in the stadium before reaching for a little boy and autographing his Stormers t-shirt and lifting him back up to the overjoyed crowd. Not stopping there, Dweba also signed a rugby ball for another ecstatic fan.

The smiles on the fans’ faces speak volumes, and it’s so pleasing to see how a simple interaction brought them uncontainable joy.

“A moment they’ll remember forever,” the post was captioned.

The post, now with over 179K views, was met with just as much love from social media users who praised the Stormers and commended Dweba for placing a future rugby player in the little boy’s heart.

“Just a small gesture, but it will have lasting memories in the kids’ minds. Well done. Very special,” another user also commented.

Small-town-raised Bukho Pantsi is a six-foot-plus rugby gem and is about to light up the field for the Madibaz at the upcoming Varsity Shield competition!

Eastern Cape, South Africa (13 February 2025) – Nineteen-year-old Bukho Pantsi is making waves in the rugby world, earning the title of “diamond in the rough” as a new recruit for the Madibaz rugby team.

The former Woodridge College standout is set to ignite the Varsity Shield competition with his impressive skills and athleticism.

Standing over six feet tall, this versatile back can seamlessly transition between outside centre and fullback. His blistering speed and imposing stature make him a force to be reckoned with on both attack and defence.

Pantsi was born in Qonce (King William’s Town) but grew up on the Garden Route, where he attended Knysna Primary.

In Grade 6, he walked through the doors of Woodridge College as a registered learner and boarder. It was there where his journey as a promising sports player shone through, representing the school in a range of sports, including rugby and hockey in winter.

“I guess I stood out [in sport] with Woodridge not having that many learners. But we punched above our weight,” the young sports player said.

He admitted that it would be a very different story now as players are much bigger than those he was used to facing on the pitch.

Madibaz Coach David Manuel, who describes him as a “diamond in the rough”, selected him based on his immense potential.

Glimpses of this were already seen when he debuted for Madibaz Rugby Club in last season’s Grand Challenge Cup competition.

Pantsi, who will pursue a national diploma in public management at the institution, took a gap year after matriculating in 2023.

“I’ve progressively made it into the [Madibaz] system and now it’s my first year as a student here,” Pantsi said.

“Coach D (Manuel) has given me the freedom to express myself, but within my role. He has given me the skillset to attack the gaps and score as many tries as possible.”

This is just the way he likes it, too, being one who thrives on putting his side on the front foot.

Phansi thrives on being a game-changer and putting his team on the front foot. While acknowledging the pre-game jitters ahead of their opening clash against Varsity College on Valentine’s Day in Durban, he is eager to take the field. He embraces the challenge of playing against older opponents in the demanding KZN conditions.

Acclimatising to the Madibaz rugby culture has not been difficult for him as the team’s leadership group have been very accommodating in terms of helping the newbies understand the system.

Pantsi said making it to the professional ranks one day was the goal. But first there is the small matter of tackling the rather huge Varsity Shield competition!

Ricollin Moodley, a talented young artist, has taken the online world by storm with his unique lipstick art. His incredible portraits of Springboks players like Siya Kolisi and Faf de Klerk have not only gained him recognition but also landed him a meet-and-greet with the rugby stars themselves!

Durban, South Africa (06 December 2024) – Through his unique God-given talent, popular lipstick visual artist Ricollin Moodley is not only making a name for himself, but he also more recently got to rub shoulders with Mzansi’s very own Springboks stars!

From humble beginnings, Ricollin’s creativity has blossomed, and his artworks of local icons have captured the hearts of many.

After creating a series of lipstick artworks and portraits of our rugby players in green and gold, Ricollin’s pieces gained significant attention on his social media platforms, eventually reaching the likes of Siya Kolisi, Faf de Klerk and Vincent Koch.

A post shared on his birthday, 10 November, featured him surrounded by portraits of some Springboks, pop star Tyla, and our favourite darling, Rachel Kolisi. Impressed by Ricollin’s artistry, Siya commented on the post, saying:

“Happy birthday. You should be so proud of yourself! Your work is amazing and I love the purpose behind! The best is yet to come.”

And some of this 24-year-old’s best moments are indeed coming to fruition! Ricollin recently had the honour of meeting some of the rugby stars and having them sign his work at a recent Sharks game in Durban.

Taken aback by the moment, which wasn’t only a dream come true but affirming of his unconventional artistry, a grateful Ricollin said:

“A day to remember. This was the first time my family and I had been to a game and also in a stadium. It was an honour meeting the very same people who inspire me and my paintings that I create with only lipsticks. Never let what you don’t have stop you.”

Ricollin’s story is an inspiration to all, proving that with passion and talent, anything is possible – no matter how out of the ordinary it may be!

And in other good news, the talented artist was one of the people chosen as part of the Good Things Guy x Jetour campaign. The luxury car teamed up with Good Things Guy to find three dynamic South African faces to become the brand’s ambassadors, who get to drive a new Jetour for six months! Ricollin is one of those lucky people thanks to nominations from readers and fans of his work!

Though the 2025 Cape Town Carnival is some months away, we already know a storm is brewing! The Stormers themselves are set to join the iconic parade so the city will get to celebrate with their favourite rugby squad!

Cape Town, South Africa (03 December 2024) — Stormers fans have just been given even more of a good reason to attend the 2025 Cape Town Carnival thanks to the news that the city’s favourite rugby squad will be joining in on the festivities!

The beloved carnival is known for uniting Capetonians from all walks of life. It’s largely the city’s ultimate display of creativity and community—everything from costumes to floats and performances give local creatives a chance to shine. With dancers, performers, firefighters and floats all on vibrant display, crowds are spoilt with choice for their favourite acts.

But next year, the Stormers will be a sure contender for crowd-favourite. The 15th Cape Town Carnival will see the iconic team feature as part of the festivities for the first time!

On Saturday 15 March, Green Point’s Fanwalk is set to come alive with the squad on their dedicated ‘Taking the Cape by Storm float’ so carnival attendees who double as rugby die-hards can see their heroes up close.

“As a proud Capetonian, I know how much the Carnival means to the City,” shares team captain Dan du Plessis.

“So we cannot wait to be part of the 15th anniversary. Some of the guys in the squad have already started practising their moves and are excited to show them off to everyone when we hit the Fanwalk next year.”

South Africa stands tall once again as Pieter-Steph du Toit rewrites history, becoming the first Springbok to win the World Rugby Player of the Year award twice—proving that champions are born, but legends are made!

Global (25 November 2024) – South Africans are no strangers to excellence, and once again, the Springboks have shown the world why they’re a force to be reckoned with. Pieter-Steph du Toit has been crowned World Rugby Player of the Year 2024, making history as the first South African to win this coveted accolade twice. What a moment of pride for our nation!

The announcement came at a glittering awards ceremony in Monaco, where Du Toit’s incredible performance this year was celebrated. At 32 years old, he has added yet another remarkable achievement to his already illustrious career. His first win in 2019 set the standard, and this second honour cements his legacy as one of the greats.

Du Toit wasn’t the only Springbok to shine on the global stage. Six of his teammates joined him in the World Rugby Men’s 15s Dream Team for 2024. Eben Etzebeth, Cheslin Kolbe, Ox Nche, Malcolm Marx, Damian de Allende, and Jesse Kriel were recognised for their contributions to South Africa’s dominant season.

This recognition is more than just a personal achievement for the players—it’s a celebration of teamwork, resilience, and the Springbok spirit. Under the leadership of coach Rassie Erasmus, the Boks have become a family, and it shows in the way they perform, lift each other up, and represent South Africa with pride.

Even off the field, South African rugby continues to make a difference. SA Rugby’s “The Bag That Builds” project, which turns tournament waste into building materials for community housing, was celebrated with the Rugby for All Award. Initiatives like this show that sport has the power to uplift and create lasting change.

From claiming the Castle Lager Rugby Championship to lifting the Nelson Mandela Challenge Plate, Freedom Cup, and Prince William Cup, the Springboks have had a season for the ages. Their impressive win rate of 84.6% is proof of their dominance on the international stage.

Coach Rassie Erasmus captured the sentiment perfectly: “This is all thanks to the collective effort. The players give their all week-in and week-out, and it’s an inspiration to us all.”

To du Toit, the Dream Team players, and everyone who made this season unforgettable: thank you for reminding us that champions are made through dedication, teamwork, and an unwavering belief in the extraordinary. South Africa is proud of you!

The Springboks, champions of the rugby world, stormed through Cardiff with a stunning 45-12 victory over Wales, completing a flawless UK tour and reminding us all why they wear the crown of greatness.

Cardiff, United Kingdom (24 November 2024) – The Springboks, South Africa’s pride and joy, have once again proven why they are the kings of the rugby world.

Their 2024 Castle Lager Outgoing Tour ended on a high as they thrashed Wales 45-12 at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff on Saturday. This emphatic victory capped off a flawless UK tour, with the Boks securing a clean sweep of three wins.

What a moment for South Africa and rugby fans worldwide!

The Springboks entered the match as the number one team in the world, and they played like it from the opening whistle. Within just 10 minutes, they had scored two sensational tries, leaving Wales reeling. Franco Mostert opened the account with a brilliant line off a Cheslin Kolbe setup, followed closely by Eben Etzebeth powering over after a slick team move.

The Boks’ attacking flair was relentless, with Kurt-Lee Arendse dazzling on the wing and Elrigh Louw showcasing the power of the Bok pack as he bulldozed over for his first Test try. By half-time, South Africa had raced to a commanding 26-5 lead, leaving Welsh fans stunned. While Wales managed a try of their own before the break, the writing was on the wall – the Springboks were here to make a statement.

This victory isn’t just about another win; it’s about consistency, determination, and excellence. The Springboks have weathered a long and gruelling season filled with intense competition, and to finish it off with a clean sweep speaks volumes about their preparation, skill, and teamwork. More than that, it’s about inspiring a nation. Rugby has always been more than just a sport in South Africa – it’s a unifying force, a reason to cheer together, and a reminder of what’s possible when we work towards a common goal. The Boks’ success on this tour is a symbol of hope and pride for every South African.

The second half was much like the first, with South Africa continuing their dominance. Aphelele Fassi added his name to the score sheet, and debutant Gerhard Steenekamp sent fans into a frenzy with his first Test try. Jordan Hendrikse closed out the Boks’ scoring in style, grabbing a try and adding five conversions to his tally.

While Wales fought valiantly, scoring a late try through James Botham, the night belonged to the men in green and gold. Even with lapses in concentration and missed opportunities, the Springboks demonstrated their class, scoring seven tries to two.

As the final whistle blew, the scoreline of 45-12 confirmed South Africa’s status as the best rugby team in the world. More importantly, it showed the power of persistence, hard work, and unity. Coach Rassie Erasmus and his team deserve all the accolades for a season that has filled hearts with joy and ignited dreams across the nation.

From Potchefstroom to Pretoria, from the rolling hills of KwaZulu-Natal to the bustling streets of Johannesburg, South Africans will be celebrating this victory and what it represents. It’s not just about lifting trophies or winning games – it’s about inspiring belief in a better tomorrow.

With this tour behind them, the world knows one thing for sure – South Africa’s Springboks are relentless, remarkable, and unstoppable.

Well done, Bokke – you’ve made us all proud once again!

Tim Cocker took to his channel Eggchasers to once again, sing the praises of South Africa and this time, he had us all in tears!

South Africa (19 November 2024) – Tim Cocker of Eggchasers, a rugby commentary YouTube channel, promised to return to South Africa after being here in July 2024 for the Ireland x Springboks matches. He gushed about his time in the country and the praise was extremely well received.

Tim later returned, this time for the New Zealand games in Joburg and Cape Town, where he got to experience some iconic travel moments, spend time with the Boks Office podcast and video cast guys, and experience the power of transformation projects.

One of the stops he made this time around, was at the Grootbos Foundation, which uses rugby as a transformative tool in Gaansbaai.

Tim once again took a moment to sit down and unpack his experience. For those not in the know, South African businesses are mandated to take part in Corporate Social Investment projects to help uplift previously disadvantaged communities. Many big companies do this by forming foundations where they can manage the donated funding and projects, to empower the community directly.

It was this concept Tim got to see in action while staying at the Grootbos Private Nature Reserve. For Tim, who found himself choked up a few times through the video, the fact the rugby is being used to make change within entire communities, was deeply moving.

His love of the sport, his newfound love of South Africa and his desire to see change all came together for this moving moment that many of the Good Things Guy readers have sent us since it went live.

Take a look at Tim’s wholesome reaction to seeing transformation in South Africa. Seriously, grab a tissue because this one will get you teary!
