You never know what you might find on a beach in South Africa. In Mossel Bay, a sheep was recently caught out on a beach stroll, enjoying the sand between his hooves and taking in the views!

Mossel Bay, South Africa (13 May 2025) — You never know what you might find on a beach in South Africa. From breathtaking sand creations to surfing marathons for incredible causes, there’s always something exciting to see at the sea. Recently, a unique sight caught a coastal town’s attention: a sheep taking a stroll on the beach in Mossel Bay.

In a video shared by Michael de Nobrega (a passionate marine life photographer from Hartenbos who you might recall from a heartwarming story earlier this year in which he and his son freed a beach from a massive fishing net), the internet was treated to the sweet sight.

Guided by a leash, the sheep got to enjoy the sand between his hooves and the fresh ocean air on his wool. In fact, the beach sheep seemed so content we wouldn’t have been surprised if he went into the shallow of the waves for a little cool-down dip!

The sheep is believed to belong to the Badenhorst family and has been spotted on various ‘walkies’ in Mossel Bay.

For those who thought sheep were only farm animals, think again! Sheep make incredible companions, especially when it comes to raising baby animals. Wildlife non-profits like The Rhino Orphanage and Hoedspruit Elephant Rehabilitation Development (HERD) rely on sheep nannies to keep orphaned rhinos and elephants company; playing an imperative role in the young animals’ social development.

Spotted any unexpected animals adventuring around your town? Let us know in the comments!

If you’re not going to give in to the little voice that tells you to start your day with chocolate on Easter, we won’t judge. But, if you’re looking for something a little more breakfast friendly, here’s a bunny pancakes recipe too cute not to try:

South Africa (14 April 2025) — We all love a cheeky chocolate egg moment when Easter comes around, but it’s generally advisable not to start the Easter weekend (or any weekend) with a huge amount of chocolate at the crack of dawn (though we won’t judge you if you do). If you are looking to whip up a treat that’s a little more breakfast-friendly whilst still getting your Easter on, there’s a short, sweet and simple bunny pancake with your name on it.

Making fun pancakes like these is also a great way to get the kids involved in the kitchen!

A Pancake Bunny Recipe Just in Time for Easter

Ingredients

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • 1 cup buttermilk (or milk + 1 tsp vinegar)
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tbsp melted butter
  • Chocolate chips (for eyes)
  • Banana slices (for cheeks)
  • Strawberries (for the nose and ears)
  • Whipped cream (for the tail)

Instructions

  1. Mix the dry ingredients in one bowl and the wet ingredients in another.
  2. Combine the wet and dry ingredients until just mixed.
  3. Heat a pan and pour batter to create one large pancake (head) and two smaller pancakes (cheeks).
  4. Cut one pancake into ear shapes.
  5. Assemble the bunny face with banana slices for cheeks, a strawberry nose, chocolate chip eyes, and whipped cream for the tail.
  6. Serve with syrup or honey!

Project Purpose uplifts women in Kya Sands by teaching them how to crochet beautifully, creating both characters and a means to a future that’s more financially secure. The crochet squad have been very busy and have just dropped a new Easter trio that’s well worth getting eggcited about.

Johannesburg, South Africa (12 March 2025) – Women are crocheting their way out of poverty in Kya Sands thanks to NPO Project Purpose, where adorable characters come to life, creative talents are nurtured and financial independence becomes possible. The crochet squad recently dropped a new Easter trio to get eggcited about—Pebbles, Hopsalot and Shelby.

As the story goes, it all began one Easter when Hopsalot was tasked with being the ‘official Easter Egg Delivery Hopper’—no small responsibility.

Hopsalot needed to get to Crochet Land before sunrise to deliver eggs, and as the fastest bunny in the meadow, he was pretty confident he’d make it in time.

However, what he made up for in enthusiasm, Hopsalot lacked in paying attention. As such, he didn’t notice that his basket of eggs had an unanticipated visitor—Pebbles, the sleeping grey bunny.

After a dash over the hill, the basket tipped and out with it came the colourful eggs, one of which cracked open.

Shelby, the chick, emerged from the shell, peeping at the scene.

Pebbles, Shelby and Hopsalot teamed up to clean up the egg-mess and in the process became fast friends. Together, they delivered all the eggs before the sun woke up and united as the Easter Egg trio and guardians.

The sweet story emphasises the effort that Project Purpose put into their creations. For the team, it isn’t simply about what they create but how they create.

The Project has supported young mothers, go-getters and creatives from Kya Sands in no small way. And, by purchasing their Snugglehead characters like the Easter trio, you (not unlike Pebbles and Shelby choosing to help Hopsalot) are helping a mission to financial independence hop along powerfully.

You can find the trio (and more about Project Purpose) here.

In an oh-so-creative type of comedy, dogs at a dog daycare recreated the film posters of several Oscar-nominated movies, and they might just need their own awards.

Global (05 March 2025) — Oscar-nominated films were the talk and woof of a dog daycare, and not just because the pups are still not over Wicked missing out.

See, a spot called Meyer’s Pet Care has an annual tradition. Every year, they remake Oscar Best Picture nominee posters with their daycare dogs, and this year’s edition might just deserve its own set of awards.

The dogs were nothing short of iconic in their faux-roles, while the clever title adjustments and fantastic photography didn’t hurt the mood.

From ‘The Snootalist’ to ‘A Complete Chewbone’, the recreation offers all the right elements of comedy, creativity and what might be the only time we’ll ever call a priest adorable.

Who Were the Best Picture Nominees?

The 97th Academy Awards had the following nominees:

  • Anora (winner)
  • The Brutalist
  • A Complete Unknown
  • Conclave
  • Dune Part Two
  • Emilia Pérez
  • I’m Still Here
  • Nickel Boys
  • The Substance
  • Wicked

In the same order, here are the clever spins the dogs made of the original film names:

  • Abarka
  • The Snootalist
  • A Complete Chewbone
  • Curclave
  • Boop
  • Emilia Pérro
  • I’m Still Hungry
  • The Goodest Boys
  • The Pupstance
  • Licked

If you’ve seen The Substance, you’ll know exactly why ‘The Pupstance’ is a fantastic spin-off name. As for ‘Licked’, we’ll forgive the name because the film poster was that good. Without further ado:

The Mdzananda Animal Clinic is hosting its first Picnic for Paws event set to take place in Stellenbosch, and all animal (and picnic) lovers are invited to enjoy a day out for animal well-being.

Stellenbosch, South Africa (12 November 2024) — The Mdzananda Animal Clinic team is thrilled to share that they are hosting their first Picnic for Paws event ever, bringing together animal lovers and supporters over good food, better company and gorgeous scenery in Stellies.

Mdzananda is the only veterinary health care service and shelter in the vast Khayelitsha region, where around 300,000 animal companions live. Their work offers a lifeline to pet owners and street animals, offering a myriad of services, from sterilisation efforts to medical care and community education, that help the next generation of animal lovers in Khayelitsha.

Of course, without funds, the Mdzananda team can’t do the work they’re heavily relied on to do. As such, they host different fundraising efforts throughout the year, including the ever-popular ‘Paws on the Promenade’ in Sea Point.

The Picnic for Paws fundraising event hopes to make December a little less worrisome for the team and will provide animal champions with a chance to do some good for Mdzananda in the most chilled way.

Food options boast vegetarian and vegan picnic baskets with an array of treats to choose from whilst getting a chance to unwind in a setting that’s equal parts tranquil and beautiful at the Joostenberg Bistro & Deli.

Tickets are limited, so those interested are encouraged to book their spots early!

As for the proceeds, these will go directly to supporting Mdzananda’s programs; including sterilisation services, life-saving treatments and community education initiatives.

Picnic for Paws Details:

When: Saturday, 7 December from 10 am to 2 pm

Where: Joostenberg Bistro & Deli, Klein Joostenberg, R304 Muldersvlei, Stellenbosch

Tickets: Bookings can be made here

Contact: Kelly via 083 566 9166 or fund@mdzananda.co.za.

In a unique Christmas advert, we get to step inside the shoes of the one man everyone’s always on the lookout for. In the ad, we see a deeper side to the beloved Where’s Wally and are reminded of something we might have forgotten over many years of gift-giving:

Global (10 November 2024) — Finding the perfect gift during the festive season can feel a lot like searching for Wally (or Waldo, depending on where your copy of the series was printed).

We plough through crowds and over-complicated gift aisles, searching for that light at the end of the tunnel purchase. We get close to finding something similar to what we’re looking for, only to realise we missed the real deal completely. We’re inundated with colours and options and excess to the point where we close the book entirely, promising to return to it another time (the next time is even more frustrating than the first).

But, in a clever Christmas advert from Etsy that those of us with a dry sense of humour will love, Wally reminds us of something we might have forgotten in our gift-searching hunts!

Good Things Guy loves nothing more than a Christmas ad with heart, and as someone who is openly a part of the ‘it’s the thought that counts’ camp, I found myself relishing in Etsy’s Christmas ad, writes Good Things Guy’s Ashleigh!

In the ad, Wally lets us into his world, and we are able to walk a mile in his ever-exploring shoes. There are lots of crowds, many people excited to find him and some who cannot believe he is really there.

But, as Wally sighs, it’s always about where he is and never who he is.

In a rare instance, we see Wally in a personal setting where no one is looking for him. Instead, he is looking for his loved one!

He is presented with a heartwarming gift, personal and filled with thought (we won’t spoil what exactly Wally gets for Christmas, but we will say it’s cheesy in the absolute best way).

“Sometimes, it takes someone who really knows you to make you feel seen,” Wally reflects.

Despite scores of people searching for Wally, it was the one special person who found him and really saw him that mattered most.

So, in all our gift-giving adventures this upcoming festival season, keep in mind that there is something rather precious in opting for the gift that didn’t cost the most money but rather the most thought.

Ackermans is bringing the joy again with their annual Baby of the Year competition, launching an irresistibly cute campaign that taps into “baby language” and celebrates the magic of parenthood, play, and connection!

Johannesburg, South Africa (21 October 2024) – It’s that time of year again! Ackermans has brought back one of South Africa’s most adored competitions—the annual Baby of the Year!

This year, the campaign kicked off with an irresistibly cute advert introducing a fun new “tool” designed to understand “Baby Language,” and it’s sure to put a smile on every parent’s face.

The Baby of the Year competition has become a much-anticipated event for many parents. It’s more than just a chance to showcase their little ones—it’s an opportunity for their baby to become an Ackermans model and win amazing vouchers!

“Back by popular demand, this competition gives parents the opportunity to celebrate their bundles of joy in true Ackermans style. This year, the stakes are high as Ackermans searches for those charming personalities who love to have fun, express themselves and of course, have a lot to say,” shares Bronwyn Pretorius, Chief of Marketing at Ackermans.

The advert that’s stealing hearts features media personality Sne Dladla, who spends time with some of South Africa’s cutest babies, asking them all kinds of questions. The twist? An “AI” program steps in to interpret what the babies might be saying, and the results are as hilarious as they are adorable! But here’s the catch: “AI” in this campaign doesn’t stand for “Artificial Intelligence”—it’s “Ackermans Intelligence,” a fun nod to technology with a heavy dose of baby cuteness.

While the AI interpretations are, of course, not real, it’s impossible not to laugh at how accurate some of the “responses” seem to be. You might even find yourself wondering if the babies truly had those thoughts in mind!

“In light of global conversations around the use of AI and creativity, and what it means for us humans, we set out to purposefully tackle this topic through this new content piece. We believe now more than ever we should celebrate connection and joy. As a leading retailer in baby and kids apparel, our product offering is designed with play in mind, and we want to encourage parents to engage and cherish these unique and special moments with their little ones,” adds Pretorius.

Want your little one to be in the running for the title of Ackermans Baby of the Year? Here’s what you need to do:

Step 1: Dress your baby in their cutest Ackermans outfit
Step 2: Capture a picture or video that shows off your baby’s unique personality while rocking their Ackermans look
Step 3: Upload your picture or video using the hashtag #MyAckermansBaby2024 on Facebook, TikTok, or Instagram
Step 4: Tag Ackermans and make sure you’re following them on all their social platforms!

This year’s competition is all about celebrating those unforgettable baby moments that bring us joy and connection. So, whether your little one is a budding comedian or has the world’s sweetest smile, don’t miss out on the chance to make some incredible memories—and maybe even see your baby shining on Ackermans’ next campaign!

A mini cheerleader is bringing joy to both the DHL Dancers and crowds; stealing the show as a little star in the making!

Cape Town, South Africa (14 May 2024)—A mini cheerleader named Ella has stolen the show many times after she joined the DHL Dancers cheer team!

Little Ella is only six-years-old, but she’s already proven her natural stage presence and dance skills as she helps crowds get ready to root their hearts out during rugby matches. Word on the street is, she’s South Africa’s youngest cheerleader.

Her mom, Jenny Beck, who is the head choreographer and manager of the DHL dancers shares that Ella has essentially grown up in the dance studio that Jenny runs.

“She loves dancing almost as much as I do, and because she takes so many classes with me, she is really good for her age,” beams Jenny.

Ella joined the cheer team at the end of 2023.

“I thought it would be a fun addition to add a mini cheerleader to our team and and the crowd has absolutely loved her.”

A post shared by DHL Dancers (@dhldancers)

Speaking to the world of cheerleading and choreography, Jenny is a proud manager and choreographer of the team.

“My favourite part of the job is seeing my visions come together and hearing the crowd go crazy when our dancers run out on to the field. Obviously supporting our boys on the field and being part of the game day atmosphere is also something I will never get tired of.”

Of Ella’s role as mini-cheerleader, Jenny thinks its a great way to showcase that dance is for everyone.

“We perform just before the players run out and we are an essential part of getting the crowd excited before kick off. Having a child perform with us helps to show that dance is for everyone and even our younger fans can get involved in supporting our local rugby team. Dance is for everyone, and so is rugby.”

A 6-year-old girl named Jagger has believed (adorably) for the span of her life that the Maroon 5 hit ‘Moves Like Jagger’ was written for her. She still does. As the stars prepare for their South African shows, her family are hoping to do more than just take her to see ‘her’ song performed live, but put Jagger’s trip to the concert, on Maroon 5’s radar!

Durban, South Africa (31 January 2024) — A handful of years ago, Alex and Justin welcomed their first child into the world. They named her Jagger.

For just over the six years since she was born, Maroon 5’s 2011 smash-hit ‘Moves Like Jagger’ has been a favourite serenade that Jagger’s parents have performed for her time and time again. Of course, the little girl has believed for the span of her life that Maroon 5 wrote the song just for her.

According to her aunt Lusanda:

“She legitimately thinks Maroon 5 wrote the song for her (as one does at 6-years-old).”

So, with Maroon 5 getting ready to perform in South Africa, the perfect opportunity for Jagger to see the ‘band she inspired’ live came about.

“We have managed to come together and get them all flights, tickets in a child-safe area but close to the stage, accommodation and everything in Cape Town—so that they can go and watch Maroon 5 sing ‘her’ song to her.

“She even has a T-shirt that says ‘I am Jagger’,” adds Lusanda.

Lusanda’s big wish for her niece and the family is to get Jagger’s story on as many radars as possible and grab as much attention so that Maroon 5 might just come across Jagger, learn that she will be at the Cape Town concert, and hear of her sweet bond with them.

“If we do come right I don’t think any other 6-year-old on the planet is ever going to be more excited in their lives—EVER,” Lusanda adds.

South Africans, can we make it go viral and help this dream happen?

Wholesome tears incoming! A few years back, Norman the dog spent 95 days in an animal rescue facility before he found his new family. Brimming with love, his new mom wrote a children’s book all about the dog who stole her heart.

United States (4 April, 2023) — Sometimes the underdog becomes the main character. Sometimes, he even gets his own book. Norman the rescue may not have known in October of 2020 that he’d have a book all about him one day, much less a home. But a few years and a new family later, Norman would become a pooch-protagonist touching hearts all over the world.

Back in late 2020, and Norman (known then as Zorro) would spend 95 days with the Hoopeston Animal Rescue Team (HART) before Julie and Paul Cundriff made him an addition to their family.

Described as a dog with a personality “bigger than the sky”, Norman even has his own Facebook page — The Adventures of Norman.

Needless to say, Norman has his fair share of thrills in his new life, and so Julie did what any passionate dog mom would do— she wrote a book about them, making his forever home truly eternal.

Since Norman is so good with kids, she made it a children’s book so that every little one can have a Norman in their life.

And, of the non-profit that took him under their wing, HART received a surprise gift in the post recently.

“HART received a wonderful surprise in our mail today…a book written about Norman and his journey to rescue and adoption,” – HART.

So many positive rescue stories deserve a place on bookshelves, as do the incredible people who help them find their happy endings.

Here in South Africa, we have a lot of Normans just waiting for their moment in the sun, and a lot of people working tirelessly to make their story beautiful.

Check out our charity list dedicated to the organisations helping Normans around South Africa every day, and get inspired to give new life to a tired tail.
