Megan Kilian’s natural charm and “just being herself” during an audition workshop in Johannesburg wowed filmmakers, and now she’s playing a version of herself in a documentary set in a future where the worst predictions from the Paris Agreement have come true!

Mossel Bay, South Africa (28 May 2025) – At just 13 years old, Megan Kilian has landed the incredible opportunity of being selected from a group of 60 children to feature in a European science fiction documentary!

Even though she had no prior acting experience, Megan’s naturally engaging presence and spontaneity during auditions in Johannesburg made her a perfect fit for the role.

The film, titled World of Walls has been directed by Slovakian filmmaker Lucia Kasova and explores life in a near-future ecological crisis – a world where the worst predictions from the Paris Agreement have come true.

Set in a world devastated by environmental collapse, World of Walls follows the coming-of-age journey of 13-year-old children from different backgrounds. The story examines how global inaction on climate change has reshaped childhood and forced young people to confront extreme weather, resource shortages, and migration for survival.

South Africa itself became a bit of a co-star, as the production team chose the country for its real-world parallels to the film’s imagined setting, including power outages and water scarcity, elements which mirror what many scientists predict could become widespread elsewhere if global temperatures continue to rise.

Filming began in Johannesburg, where Megan attended Midstream Ridge Primary School. After her family relocated to Mossel Bay in June 2024, the production was adapted to accommodate the move, with scenes rewritten to follow her story, Curro explains.

“Since it’s a documentary, we don’t have to learn lines,” Megan says.

“We just act naturally and make up our own dialogue as we go. It’s been a lot of fun.”

The film will launch in 2026 across several European countries, including France, Belgium, Germany and the Czech Republic. The trailer has already garnered recognition at FIPADOC in France, a prestigious international documentary film festival.

South African teacher Nadine Smith has been awarded internationally for her efforts in STEM education. One of four global recipients, the educator was the sole African awardee.

Global (27 May 2025) — South African teacher Nadine Smith is a Coding and Robotics educator who recently made the local STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) field enormously proud when she was honoured with a prestigious award. Nadine was awarded the 025 EDGE in Tech Athena Award for Early Career Leadership!

Awarded by the Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society and the Banatao Institute (CITRIS) at the University of California, Nadine was honoured as part of a unique ceremony at UC Berkeley.

The South African teacher was the only recipient from Africa and one of just four global recipients of the award.

Nadine’s accolade celebrates individuals who are leading the charge in creating technology ecosystems that are more diverse, equitable and impactful.

“I believe every child deserves to see themselves in STEAM,” Nadine says. STEAM encompasses STEM fields but with the addition of art.

“Through coding and robotics, I strive to ignite confidence, curiosity, and creativity in learners, especially those who don’t yet realise they belong in tech. This award is not just a personal milestone, but a reminder of the importance of creating inclusive learning spaces where all young minds can dream, build and lead,” she says.

Beyond leading initiatives, Nadine also trains fellow teachers in integrating emerging technologies.

“It is incredibly important to recognise the people doing the difficult work of expanding access to essential tech fields,” explains Jill Finlayson, the Managing Director of the CITRIS Innovation Hub (which oversees the awards).

“Those who champion on-ramps into STEM, fair workplaces and welcoming cultures are critical to the development of innovative technologies and help ensure that new solutions will work well for everyone.”

South Africa’s Ruche Moodley takes on Silverstone just weeks after undergoing surgery due to a crash; this young athlete is showing just what he is made of!

United Kingdom (26 May 2025) – South Africa’s Ruche Moodley returned to the Moto3 grid with a lion-hearted performance at Silverstone, showing grit, determination, and an unwavering commitment to his dream, even as he raced through pain and penalties.

Just weeks earlier, the Gqeberha-born teen was left recovering from a dramatic crash during the Spanish Grand Prix. A mechanical failure sent him hurtling into the gravel on lap one, fracturing the radius in his dominant right arm. He underwent surgery in Barcelona, where a titanium plate and half a dozen screws were needed to patch things up. But even with his arm still bandaged, Moodley was back on the training bike, refusing to let a broken bone keep him off track for long.

“I was really frustrated not being able to race,” Moodley admitted. “From the moment I got back from hospital, I started training again. I just wanted to be ready.”

His recovery was nothing short of relentless. Between physiotherapy and fitness drills, he managed to miss only a single race, sitting out the French Grand Prix, before being medically cleared by the FIM to return for round seven at Silverstone.

“It felt great to get the all clear,” he shared before the British GP. “Watching the race from the couch was tough. I just wanted to be back on the bike.”

But racing at one of Moto3’s fastest, most physical tracks with a still-healing arm was no easy task. Add to that a double long-lap penalty carried over from the crash in Spain, and Silverstone became more than just a comeback; it was a true test of mental and physical resilience.

Moodley qualified 21st, managing both his tyres and the dull ache in his arm. In the race, he made the smart call to serve his penalties early to avoid carrying them into the next round.

“I knew I had to be cautious. If I got taken out early, those penalties would follow me,” he explained. “So I played it safe at the start, took my long laps, and just focused on finishing.”

That finish came in 20th place, an impressive result considering he was racing with limited strength, numbness in his arm, and no prior race rhythm after weeks off the track.

“That felt like the longest race of my life,” Moodley admitted. “I lost feeling in my arm towards the end, but I kept my head down. I was just counting down the laps.”

With his Silverstone return behind him, Ruche is focused on regaining full strength before heading to Aragon in two weeks.

“This race was about proving to myself that I can bounce back. I’ll be stronger at Aragon,” he said with quiet confidence.

Still only 18, Moodley’s resilience has earned him growing admiration both at home and on the world stage. One thing is certain: Ruche isn’t just chasing podiums; he’s proving that the South African heart belongs on the global grid.

Oh, he didn’t just run, he soared! Sprinting teen sensation Bayanda Walaza didn’t just win the 100m race at the Boris Hankezovic Memorial in Zagreb; he smashed his own national junior record while setting a new one that will certainly be hard to beat!

Sports Park Mladost, Zagreb (26 May 2025) – I think it’s safe to say that sprinting teen sensation Bayanda Walaza is solidifying his position as a global force and breaking history with every race he runs!

In a stunning display of raw power and undeniable talent, this past Saturday, Walaza powerfully shattered yet another record at the Boris Hankezovic Memorial in Zagreb, clocking in at 9.94 seconds in the 100m!

Not only is this the fourth fastest time ever recorded by a South African and a new national junior record, but it also marks the breaking of his very own national U20 record of 9.99, which he set in Tshwane in March.

Walaza finished well clear of German sprinter Owen Ansah, who took second place in Zagreb in 10.20, EWN reports.

The incredible feat comes after the incredible gold win at the World Athletics Relays in Guangzhou, China, in which Walaza was a part of the team that delivered a world-leading time of 37.61 seconds in the men’s 4x100m relay.

This 19-year-old athlete has been on a meteoric rise since he first caught our attention last year when he made the 2024 SA Olympic team, where he went on to clinch silver in the 4×100 metres relay race. He further won gold in the U20 World Athletics Champs and has shattered just about every record in his midst!

Walaza’s success on the international stage provides an inspiring example of how talent can be cultivated and dreams can be realised. With every race, Bayanda Walaza isn’t just running; he’s breaking history and signalling a thrilling future for South African sprinting!

Behind the grace and artistry of South African figure skating stands a true force, Lisa Stigant, who is not just putting the sport on the map, but also building a stronger, more competitive future for it!

Tilburg, Netherlands (22 May 2025) – Behind the scenes of the exquisite and captivating sport of figure skating stands a woman who is a powerhouse in her own right, overseeing the technical side of the country’s competitive ice sport.

As the country’s sole International Skating Union (ISU) Technical Specialist, she’s the unsung hero ensuring South African competitive ice sport shines on the global stage.

Since 2010, Lisa has been an international technical specialist, achieving full ISU status in 2022.

According to the South African Figure Skating Association (SAFSA), she represents South Africa at ISU-sanctioned competitions around the world, bringing international insight to every event she officiates.

Currently based in the Netherlands, where she works as a coach for the TKV Club in Tilburg, Lisa’s relocation has enabled her to participate in and officiate at numerous international competitions, significantly expanding her experience and influence in the sport.

As the Head of the Technical Panel for SAFSA, Lisa runs a well-oiled machine, meticulously assembling panels for national events and ensuring every competition meets rigorous international standards.

Beyond events, she plays a pivotal role in building capacity within SAFSA by training Technical Specialists in Singles and Pairs disciplines. She has spearheaded both online and in-person workshops with technical experts from Europe, laying the groundwork for consistent technical excellence at all levels of the sport.

Her impact goes beyond just technicalities and officiating. Lisa has also been instrumental in bringing renowned international coaches like Valter Rizzo and Luca Demattè to South Africa, directly impacting the development of national athletes.

She herself is a highly active international coach who has participated in elite training camps and competitions across Europe, including the TKV Spring Training Camp with Jorik Hendricks and Marina Shirshova, Elite KNSB Camp with Manon Perron, and events such as Skate Celje, Victorie Cup, and the Challenge Cup.

She also accompanied South African skater Rachael Rodd to Skate Celje in Slovenia in 2024, further affirming her dedication to South African athletes on the world stage.

Moreover, her dedication is evident in her packed ISU Technical Specialist schedule, which includes officiating at prestigious events like the Coupe de Caroline in Belgium, the Belgian National Championships and the Spring on Ice International in the Netherlands.

“Lisa brings a rare combination of international credibility, technical precision, and development-minded leadership to SAFSA. Her contributions are invaluable,” says Christo Viljoen, President at SAFSA.

With her tireless work both locally and abroad, she continues to raise the bar for South African figure skating, ensuring its athletes, officials, and events meet the highest global standards!

While leaders shook hands, Gugu shook the internet with a recap so clever it deserves its own diplomatic passport.

South Africa (22 May 2025) – Sometimes, the only way to make sense of the chaos is to laugh at it… and Gugu Statu has absolutely nailed that. Again.

The South African creator behind the viral #NOOZ segment has done it once more, delivering the only “news report” you need about yesterday’s headline-grabbing meeting between President Cyril Ramaphosa and former US President Donald Trump in the Oval Office.

Well, if you want our take, you can read it here. But if you want to laugh… please continue.

While the world scrambles to dissect the politics and power dynamics, Gugu gave us what we really needed, a moment to breathe, to chuckle and to remind ourselves that satire isn’t just funny… it’s essential.

But before we dive into her brilliant blow-by-blow, let’s talk about the woman behind the magic.

Gugu Statu is no stranger to storytelling. A creative powerhouse with a background in television and production, she’s been lighting up social media with her quick wit, sharp satire and characters that feel like home. Her #NOOZ feature started as a lockdown project, parodying the infamous “family meetings” that defined the COVID era in South Africa. But what began as a light-hearted jab at politics and headlines has grown into something far more impactful.

“People were anxious. They were doom-scrolling. We just needed something to laugh about,” Gugu shared in her recent conversation on the Good Things with Brent Lindeque podcast.

And that’s exactly what she’s offered ever since, news with a wink, truth with a grin and sass that says everything we’re all thinking but too polite to say out loud.

Her latest post is a hilarious, slightly unhinged, yet painfully accurate skit that summed up the Ramaphosa-Trump meeting in a way that no official press release ever could.

From Trump’s chaotic golf metaphors and awkward mispronunciations (“RamaPHOsa… got that right. Let’s clap for that”) to Ramaphosa’s diplomatic charm offensive (“I brought the rainbow nation here”), Gugu’s script gave us a satirical backstage pass to what felt like an international episode of The Office — only more surreal.

The entire skit is layered, outrageous, and, dare we say it, better than the real thing.

And while it might be dressed in humour, it’s also laced with razor-sharp observation. Gugu doesn’t shy away from the uncomfortable bits: the questions around land, crime, race and power. But she presents them with that uniquely South African blend of comedy and commentary that lands not just with a laugh but with a moment of pause.

We love Gugs, and what she does is more than funny. It’s necessary. Because when the world feels heavy, when politics get noisy and headlines get bleak, humour becomes our bridge. It connects us. It softens the blow. And it gives us the resilience to keep showing up.

And I think we need that now more than ever.

Thank you, Gugu, for being the voice of reason dressed in ridiculousness. And thank you, South Africa, for still knowing how to laugh, even when the stakes are high.

Now breathe. You’re all doing better than you think.

The room was powerful, some moments uncomfortable: Unpacking the Oval Office meeting between Cyril Ramaphosa and Donald Trump in a constructive manner.

Global (22 May 2025) – We know many of our readers have given up on mainstream media. The world feels heavy, headlines feel divisive and it’s easy to feel disheartened by global politics. Good Things Guy has always been a space for hope, a platform dedicated to sharing the good things that bring us together.

But every now and then, a story comes along that, while rooted in serious global matters, needs to be told not with fear or fury but with constructive journalism. That’s what this article is. We’ve removed emotion and opinion. This is what happened in the Oval Office yesterday.

And yes, even here, we found (some) hope.

A Diplomatic Moment That Became More Than a Courtesy Call

On the 21st of May 2025, President Cyril Ramaphosa walked into the Oval Office for his first face-to-face meeting with President Donald Trump during Trump’s second term in office. The goal was clear: to reaffirm trade ties, open doors for South African innovation and lay the groundwork for the G20 Summit set to take place in Johannesburg later this year.

What followed, however, wasn’t your standard diplomatic chit-chat.

Within minutes, the conversation took a turn when President Trump raised the long-standing, controversial topic of land reform in South Africa, presenting a video showing the mistreatment of farmers. There was also a video showing the EFF leader singing a song that has caused mass contention in our country. And then a monument was shown that our President seemed not to know anything about.

It was a moment filled with tension. Uncomfortable. Unexpected. And deeply personal for many watching from home.

But this is where it gets important.

Instead of reacting emotionally or defensively, Ramaphosa responded with clarity and calm. He acknowledged the pain and complexity of the past and then reminded Trump, and the world, that South Africa is working towards a better, more inclusive future. No shouting. No slamming of hands. Just dignity and poise.

You can watch the full meeting below.

What Else Was on the Table: Trade, Technology and a Shared Future

While the viral moment stole the headlines, it wasn’t the full story. Behind the scenes, the meeting also touched on tangible opportunities for South Africa:

Trade & Jobs: South Africa made its case for the continuation and expansion of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), a programme that allows duty-free exports into the U.S. Protecting AGOA is vital for South African farmers, manufacturers, and small businesses, and Ramaphosa used the moment to stress how these agreements impact real livelihoods.

Green Energy & Tech: The South African delegation also raised opportunities around electric vehicles and green energy infrastructure, with Elon Musk’s Tesla and Starlink mentioned as potential partners for building a more connected, sustainable future.

The G20 Summit Invitation: Ramaphosa personally invited Trump to attend the G20 Summit in Johannesburg this November, a significant diplomatic gesture that signals openness, despite the tension in the room. If accepted, it could bring enormous global attention and economic activity to South Africa.

Finding the Good in a Tricky Room

Let’s be honest: the room was tricky. But sometimes, leadership isn’t about how easy the room is. It’s about how you hold yourself in it.

We saw a South African team of delegates (including golfers and a billionaire) walk into one of the most powerful rooms in the world, absorb the pressure and respond with principle.

We saw uncomfortable topics addressed, yes, but also important topics: trade, growth, connectivity, agriculture and our place in the global economy. While there may be differing views between the U.S. and South Africa (and even differing views within South Africa), dialogue is better than silence. Respect is better than rhetoric. And diplomacy, with all its discomforts, is the only path to progress.

And maybe that’s the biggest good thing of all.

Not that everything went smoothly. But that even when it didn’t, we found a way to stay steady. To represent our country with pride. And to keep the door open.

Because if you ask us, that’s how change begins… with open doors… and open conversations.

He’s been to some of the most world-renowned restaurants helmed by innovative chefs, BUT the rich mix of flavours from Cape Town’s most popular spots has easily captured this international foodie’s heart!

Cape Town, South Africa (19 May 2025) – A seasoned traveller who has seen and experienced countless views, hotels, cultures and cuisine in some of the world’s BEST countries and cities has revealed that one of the places that touched their souls and palates was our very own Mother City!

Many are familiar with Cape Town’s diverse cultural history and how its stunning coastal location has shaped a vibrant and flavourful food scene that boasts a mix of delicious traditional meals, fresh seafood, and fine dining.

During a sit-down interview on the Travel Stories with Moush UAE podcast, Chris Nader, a self-confessed hotel trotter and lover of outdoor hospitality, revealed that in all the places he had been, Cape Town had by far the best food he’d ever tasted.

“Cape Town is the best destination for food, hands down,” in Chris’ own words.

“I had a lot of great experiences in San Sebastian, in the Basque countryside of Spain, where it’s the highest concentration of Michelin restaurants per capita. Cape Town, without the whole Michelin ha-h,a is able to, everywhere you go, you have amazing cuisine. Presented in a beautiful way, with amazing people.”

Of all the places he has been, one of his best foodie trips will go down as the one he experienced in Cape Town. This included a stop at one of the city’s most well-loved and awarded restaurants, La Colombe, which offers contemporary cuisine with a French flair. He also visited Delaire Graff in Stellenbosch, known for its creative bistro favourites with a South African twist, as well as fine dining at various estates in Franschhoek.

From the Bo-Kaap with its strong Cape Malay culinary heritage to the coastal areas offering fresh seafood, Cape Town truly is the place for foodies; it certainly won over this globe-trotter’s heart!
