If teaching is a calling, then Angelique West has answered it beautifully! In the sweetest video you’ll see today, she shares a heartwarming moment with her class, revealing her absolute favourite student.

Cape Town, South Africa (29 May 2025) – We all have at least one teacher who touched our lives and holds a special place in our memories. Whether it was their words of encouragement, fun activities or excellent teaching style, there is that one particular Miss, Mrs or Mr who had a lasting impression and made schooling an enjoyable experience.

One Grade 5 teacher who is quite likely that for her young pupils is Angelique West.

In an adorably cute video shared on her Instagram, Angelique captured a wholesome moment in which she told her pupils that she had printed out a photo of her favourite student in the class.

She proceeded to get the young pupils to go to her one at a time as she showed them the “photo” of the favourite student strategically placed in a box on her lap.

The children, though their faces mostly blurred for their security, were all seen gushing and smiling as they each had a moment to take a look into the box.

It was only at the end of the video that Angelique revealed that it was actually a mirror placed in the box the whole time, not an actual photo. So, when each child came to see who the “favourite” was, it was themselves they saw in the reflection – how cute?!

The creatively wholesome gesture didn’t just make the children smile, but us and the rest of Angelique’s online audience too! It speaks so much to the importance of having a teacher who sees and appreciates her pupils as special individuals who add value to her life as much as she does theirs.

The video has won over thousands of hearts online, with people calling Angelique an awesome teacher and a true inspiration who is helping build children.

“I hope you looked a few times [in the mirror], too. Teachers are amazing,” one user commented.

A truly special moment, thoughtfully created by a truly special teacher. You’ve just got to love it!

In an adorable video that has amassed over 23 million views, a happy toddler made it his mission to greet everyone on a train in Cape Town. Of all the passengers there, social anxiety certainly wasn’t one of them!

Cape Town, South Africa (28 May 2025) — Despite the colder weather, hearts were warmed in a big way in Cape Town thanks to a charismatic toddler on a mission to make public transport his own personal meet and greet. There might’ve been many passengers onboard that day, but social anxiety certainly wasn’t one of them!

In the video, the toddler marches through seating areas to wave and greet those already seated with a joyful “hello guys” and a warm wave.

The act, as simple and pure as it was, moved millions of people. In fact, the video has amassed over 23 million views; earning 4.2 million likes.

@othembelepumane“Hello guys”🤣 Every chance he gets he greets 🤣

But, it wasn’t just the adorableness of it all that touched people. It was also the concept of what it means to greet another human, and how the art of greeting is slowly waning; making moments like Mr Hello Guys’ all the more special.

Some viewers shared that he ‘changed the atmosphere’ that day, while others humorously shared that “social anxiety is scared of him’ and that ‘he made someone’s day’.

Even PRASA commented on the video sharing “best train mood ever”, while Lipton Ice Tea said “he’s got better social skills than me”.

His mom, Othembele, shared that this is a common activity for her toddler who simply loves going out of his way to connect with people.

“He even asks how are they doing, I’d be standing next to him like his bodyguard,” she laughs.

We’re not sure if there’s a future CEO, Ted Talker or President in our midst!

A wave of kindness has washed over the SPCA in Randfontein and Westonaria, which cares for 300 vulnerable animals, and it was in the form of a much-needed financial boost.

West Rand, South Africa (28 May 2025) – The Randfontein and Westonaria SPCA on the West Rand were recently on the receiving end of a generous donation that will greatly help care for the 300 vulnerable animals at the shelter.

During a radio interview with Martin Bester on Jacaranda FM SPCA Manager and Inspector René van Straten opened up about the challenges she and her team face on a daily. This looks like anything from attending to a chained dog or one burnt with hot water by its owner, to rushing to an accident scene involving a cattle truck.

In April, René and her team attended to 40 abuse cases, this is all while grappling with strained financial resources and the daily demands of food, medication, blankets, bowls, toys, and payment for veterinary services for the animals.

Moved by the challenges that the Randfontein and Westonaria SPCA endures day in and day out, the Good Morning Angels, together with Martin Bester and Round Table’s Warm Fees, stepped in to help with a generous R70,000 donation to help keep their animals safe and warm this winter. In addition to this, Bester also committed to championing a blanket drive for the SPCA.

A grateful, René was overcome with gratitude during the show and thanked the team for the funds that will not only lift a heavy burden, but also bring about but also bring about many wagging tails, soft purrs and happy chirps!

Locals in Gordon’s Bay were left wide-eyed and smiling as an unexpected guest waddled down their suburban street… a massive elephant seal on a surprise inland holiday.

Western Cape, South Africa (27 May 2025) – It’s not every day a sleepy seaside town wakes up to an elephant seal in the streets! Gordon’s Bay locals were overjoyed and united by a rare encounter early Tuesday morning when a massive southern elephant seal decided to wander through their neighbourhood, sparking awe, laughter and a flurry of online buzz.

Residents of this coastal town near Cape Town rubbed their eyes in disbelief at dawn when they spotted an elephant seal cruising down a residential road, almost a kilometre inland from the ocean. The gigantic marine mammal appeared around 6am and stunned locals quickly began filming the unusual encounter.

It was a bizarre and thrilling sight… after all, elephant seals are not indigenous to South African waters and are mostly found much further south, near Antarctica.

Traffic came to a standstill as the elephant seal took its neighbourhood tour and authorities even closed off Sir Lowry’s Pass Road to keep both residents and the animal safe. The gentle giant didn’t seem to mind the attention, at one point, the curious seal ambled up to a law enforcement vehicle with blue lights flashing and decided to plop its head on the car’s bonnet, as if making friends with local officials. The surreal sight had onlookers grinning and shaking their heads in amazement; it looked like a scene straight out of a movie. In fact, the scene was so incredible that some on social media initially suspected it had to be AI-generated. Of course, wildlife experts and local volunteers quickly assured everyone that this gigantic visitor was absolutely real, and very much enjoying its impromptu Cape Town adventure.

The Cape of Good Hope SPCA dispatched inspectors as soon as reports came in about the unexpected visitor. By 8am, animal welfare officers were on-site, gently securing the area and formulating a plan to guide the seal back to safety. The SPCA even took to Facebook to update concerned followers, urging people to keep their distance and let the rescuers do their work.

“We’re working on a safe and stress-free plan to relocate this magnificent marine mammal. Please avoid the area to help us give the seal the space and calm it needs while we carry out the rescue,” the organisation advised in a statement.

Ensuring the animal stayed comfortable was top priority, the team wanted to avoid stressing the big seal while figuring out how to escort their hefty guest back to the ocean. As of Tuesday mid-morning, efforts to relocate the elephant seal were still underway, with officials committed to a happy ending for the marine drifter. They plan to transport or “shepherd” the seal to a suitable beach once it has rested enough, ensuring it can return to its natural habitat without harm.

Meanwhile, the community’s excitement is only growing! News of the roaming seal is spreading like wildfire through Gordon’s Bay, and a crowd of amazed residents (many still in pyjamas and slippers!) have gathered (at a respectful distance) to steal a glance at the extraordinary creature.

“We often see seals here, but not like this… it’s not an everyday occurrence. This was unusual. The seal was huge!” one astonished resident exclaimed, describing the scene that unfolded on her street.

Neighbours chatted with one another in delight and concern, marvelling at how this phenomenal encounter had brought everyone together before breakfast. Despite the early hour, the vibe was electric – parents lifted children onto their shoulders to see the gentle giant, friends called each other excitedly to say “Come quick, there’s an elephant seal outside!”, and many folks captured videos to share with those who couldn’t be there.

Online, South Africans far and wide are sharing in the joy. Social media timelines have lit up with heart emojis, seal puns and incredulous comments about the “seal on the loose”.

The consensus: this unexpected visitor was the dose of wonder and positivity everyone needed. Many praised the SPCA and local authorities for handling the situation with care and compassion, while others joked that the seal was simply on a sightseeing tour of Gordon’s Bay or looking for a comfy spot to sunbathe. The fact that some viewers initially doubted the footage was proof of just how surreal and magical the encounter appeared, a reminder that sometimes reality outshines even our wildest imagination.

Wildlife experts note that while elephant seal sightings in the Cape are rare, they’re not unheard of. In recent years, a few adventurous elephant seals have made similar pit stops along South Africa’s coast – famously, a massive seal nicknamed “Buffel” has periodically hauled out on Cape Town beaches for his moulting season, quickly becoming a local celebrity. These occurrences, though infrequent, are cherished by communities as a chance to see a remarkable animal up close and to learn about the rich marine life that occasionally graces our shores.

For Gordon’s Bay, this week’s seal visit will surely go down in town history as a bright, uplifting story told for years to come.

*Update: The elephant seal has been safely returned to the ocean after his Cape Town suburb stroll.

An inspiring cancer survivor, Vanessa Perumal, has touched our hearts after celebrating 5 years of being cancer-free by opening her home and her heart to strangers touched by her journey or navigating their own challenges.

Johannesburg, South Africa (25 May 2025) – It’s been a remarkable five years since cancer survivor, Vanessa Perumal, fought her bravest battle. Though she may have lost her vocal cords, she discovered how deeply communication and connection extend beyond words.

Vanessa chose to celebrate five years of being cancer-free in one of the most unconventional yet profound ways, by opening her home to strangers.

With a spontaneous invitation sent across diverse channels just 36 hours before her celebration on 13 May, Vanessa soon found herself breaking bread, celebrating the gift of life and good health among nearly three dozen people, some of whom she had never even met before.

In a video, Vanessa showcased how her home became the warmest and most inviting space for people, either touched by her journey or going through their own struggles and needing some form of human support.

“Humans deserve and need each other, not just virtually but also meeting in real life, Vanessa shared in her post.

Reflecting on the special night, which touched her soul far deeper than she had imagined it would, Vanessa said the experience revealed five profound lessons to her:

  1. Strangers will show up for you
  2. Community is right next door
  3. Memories matter. Create them in real life
  4. COVID-19 left scars we sometimes forget
  5. Food, laughter, and love are universal healers

“I’m dreaming now of bringing more people together—those who prayed for me, supported me, and even those I’ve yet to meet. Because life is precious, and community is everything,” Vanessa shares.

Vanessa’s unexpectedly beautiful evening offers a heartwarming reminder of how precious life is and how the intangible and invaluable moments it so generously offers are those to cherish the most.

So, why not share a meal with someone special, extend an act of kindness or try something completely out of your comfort zone to make your soul (or someone else’s) smile a little?

A little boy with dreams of becoming a pilot already knows a lot about bravery (Kgosi has been fighting cancer for most of his life). Wishing to help his life take off for the better, people have raised R50,000 so far to give the four-year-old a chance at treating his cancer.

South Africa (21 May 2025) — Four-year-old Kgosi has spent most of his young life battling cancer.

Diagnosed shortly before his second birthday, Kgosi has spent more time in public healthcare facilities than most will in a lifetime.

Things were looking hopeful for the little boy, until earlier this year.

“Just has his family was hoping to turn a corner, the cancer came back,” shares Cupcakes of Hope, a non-profit, public benefit organisation supporting families of children with cancer in South Africa.

Kgosi’s leukemia had come back, and the treatment options had winded down to a hard-to-access chemotherapy drug called Erwinase.

The problem with Erwinase is that it is not available to public hospitals, or covered by state healthcare. However, it is said to be Kgosi’s best shot at survival.

Hoping to help, people have banded together with Cupcakes of Hope to raise over R50,000 to support his treatment through the drug (which costs a staggering R150,000 for the full course).

They are calling on the public to help give the four-year-old a fighting chance before the end of June.

In good news, the little fighter has already received his first batch of the meds.

The rugby world mourns the passing of beloved legend Cornal Hendricks, who tragically passed last week. Among the many heartfelt tributes, self-taught artist Ricollin Moodley, known as Ricollinart, created a breathtaking portrait of Hendricks using only lipstick.

Wellington, South Africa (20 May 2025) – Our nation lost one of its talented and well-loved rugby legends, Cornal Hendricks, last week from what is believed to have been a heart attack.

According to SuperSport, Hendricks, who was diagnosed with the heart condition late in 2015 and missed several years of rugby because no team would take the risk of playing him with the condition, was finally given the chance to return to the rugby field for the Vodacom Bulls in 2019.

More than just a rugby star, Hendricks has had a great impact in Western Cape communities through the Cornal Hendricks Foundation, which is rooted in strengthening communities by encouraging, empowering and enabling young people to become the best they can through its programmes.

Many have paid tribute to the fallen rugby legend, and among them was talented South African self-taught artist, Ricollin Moodley, widely known as Ricollinart on his social platforms.

Known for his creative and unconventional art mediums, Ricollinart captured a video of himself breathing life onto canvas as he crafted a most beautiful portrait of the former Springboks wing, made entirely with different shades and hues of lipstick.

In the clip, each skillfully drawn line, stroke, shade, and colour-fill impressively captures the striking resemblance of Hendricks and the essence of life that has won over hearts, gave his all on the rugby field, earned 115 caps and scored 34 tries across all competitions.

“Tribute to rugby legend Cornal Hendricks. Rest in peace, legend,” Ricollinart said in his Instagram post.

As Hendricks is laid to rest this Sunday, we extend our deepest sympathies to all who knew and were inspired by this remarkable athlete.

A South African staple versus an American with a headache. Recently, a South African-in-training put a Grand-Pa to the test. And we all know who won…

South Africa (20 May 2025) — It’s hard to fathom that most of the world beyond South Africa doesn’t instinctively raid their cupboards for a Grand-Pa when a headache or hangover strikes. But, in case you didn’t know, the pain relief staple is actually a South African brand (which is probably why your foreign co-workers keep looking at you weirdly when you ask them for a grandpa whilst clutching your head in pain, wondering what an elderly man could possibly do to help).

In a recent hilarious video, American Addi Logan decided to put Grand-Pa to the test.

You might recognise Addi from another hit video that depicted his review of South African desserts! While Addi’s dessert taste test saw South African treats (at least most of them) pass with flying colours, the same couldn’t be said for the pain-reliever.

Armed with a glass of water and a look of concern in his eyes, Addi embarked a little too bravely with the powder version of the product. He shared that his wife doesn’t take her doses with water (a true South African), before proceeding to attempt his own dose water-free.

Now, nobody has ever accused Grand-Pas of tasting like icing sugar. So it wasn’t unusual for Addi’s face to morph into a look of disgust when he threw the powder into the back of his throat (we couldn’t help but laugh —someone help this man!).

He then attempted to infuse it with water, which, once again, left his face morphing and South Africans trying not to laugh.

Needless to say, this might be the American’s last shot at looking to Grand-Pa for relief. However, several South Africans raced to the comment section to defend the staple, with some suggesting Coca-Cola as the key factor and others expressing that “This is how Home Affairs knows you’re not ready [to be a South African].”

He’s been to some of the most world-renowned restaurants helmed by innovative chefs, BUT the rich mix of flavours from Cape Town’s most popular spots has easily captured this international foodie’s heart!

Cape Town, South Africa (19 May 2025) – A seasoned traveller who has seen and experienced countless views, hotels, cultures and cuisine in some of the world’s BEST countries and cities has revealed that one of the places that touched their souls and palates was our very own Mother City!

Many are familiar with Cape Town’s diverse cultural history and how its stunning coastal location has shaped a vibrant and flavourful food scene that boasts a mix of delicious traditional meals, fresh seafood, and fine dining.

During a sit-down interview on the Travel Stories with Moush UAE podcast, Chris Nader, a self-confessed hotel trotter and lover of outdoor hospitality, revealed that in all the places he had been, Cape Town had by far the best food he’d ever tasted.

“Cape Town is the best destination for food, hands down,” in Chris’ own words.

“I had a lot of great experiences in San Sebastian, in the Basque countryside of Spain, where it’s the highest concentration of Michelin restaurants per capita. Cape Town, without the whole Michelin ha-h,a is able to, everywhere you go, you have amazing cuisine. Presented in a beautiful way, with amazing people.”

Of all the places he has been, one of his best foodie trips will go down as the one he experienced in Cape Town. This included a stop at one of the city’s most well-loved and awarded restaurants, La Colombe, which offers contemporary cuisine with a French flair. He also visited Delaire Graff in Stellenbosch, known for its creative bistro favourites with a South African twist, as well as fine dining at various estates in Franschhoek.

From the Bo-Kaap with its strong Cape Malay culinary heritage to the coastal areas offering fresh seafood, Cape Town truly is the place for foodies; it certainly won over this globe-trotter’s heart!

A devastating mass poisoning event impacted numerous vultures in the Kruger National Park. But heroes and hope prevailed when many of the birds’ lives were saved. Now, 18 vultures have successfully been released!

Kruger National Park, South Africa (19 May 2025) — Earlier this month, a devastating mass poisoning event impacted vultures in the Kruger National Park.

After suspicious activity was flagged in a remote section of the park early on 6 May, the heartbreaking scene revealed itself with hundreds of vultures affected. Thanks to the joint teamwork of SANParks rangers and Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) officials, along with support teams from Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, Briner Veterinary Services and Wildscapes Veterinary Service, 84 vultures were able to be rescued alive.

The poisoning is said to have been the result of an elephant carcass laced with highly toxic agrochemical pesticides, poison laid by poachers to harvest body parts for the illegal wildlife trade. This event is shorthand for the rising threat of poison poaching that is impacting wildlife across Southern Africa.

However, heroes who acted quickly and the hope that guided their efforts have prevailed. In a good news update from the terrible event, the first group of vulture survivors were successfully released back into the wild on 15 May following incredible rehabilitation work.

As the Endangered Wildlife Trust shared along with video confirmation of the release, “these birds are among the survivors of one of the most severe vulture poisoning events ever recorded in South Africa. Their release marks a key milestone in a larger recovery effort still underway.”

The clip of the vultures flying high once more is a powerful visual. It’s a reminder that even when tragedy strikes, it does not dictate the end of the story.
