South Africa ran straight into the history books on Sunday night… and Akani Simbine led the charge.
Global, South Africa (12 May 2025) – South Africa is celebrating a moment of pure gold after our men’s 4x100m relay team sprinted to victory at the World Athletics Relays in Guangzhou, China. It was fast. It was fierce. And it was everything we needed – a reminder of the magic that happens when determination, unity, and pride collide.
In a heart-pounding final, Bayanda Walaza, Sinesipho Dambile, Bradley Nkoana, and Akani Simbine delivered a world-leading time of 37.61 seconds to clinch the gold.
It wasn’t just a win, it was a statement. A message to the world that South Africa’s athletes are not just competing; they’re conquering.
The US finished a blink behind in 37.66 seconds, and Olympic champions Canada rounded out the podium in third. But it was the final leg – that explosive anchor sprint by Simbine – that had every South African holding their breath and then erupting in celebration.
Simbine, who has already won the first two Diamond League 100m races this season, took the baton and turned on the jets. He surged past the American anchor in the final stretch with the kind of calm confidence that only comes from years of hard work, fierce focus, and a deep love for his country.
“The guys did the job, and I just had to get the baton and get through the race. Big up to the guys,” Simbine said after the race, clearly proud of his younger teammates.
His praise for the team was heartfelt: “They can handle pressure… at the elite level… South Africa is a sprinting nation as well.”
And it really is. From the streets of Soweto to the lanes of international stadiums, our athletes are showing up and shining. This gold medal isn’t just about finishing first, it’s about lifting spirits, rewriting headlines and reminding us all that we have greatness running through our veins.
