If you’ve ever been tricked into trying wasabi, this one’s for you. Recently, a lovely lady named Anna tried tempura sushi for the first time, and an unfriendly ‘avo’ (it was wasabi)…

Outeniqua, South Africa (12 May 2025) — If you’ve ever been tricked into trying ‘spicy sushi avo’ (wasabi), you’ll know the pain that a lovely lady named Anna recently cry-laughed through.

As sushi lovers know well, wasabi is an important component of the culinary journey that is raw fish.

A Japanese horseradish condiment, wasabi is not just a zing for the sake of it. It has anti-bacterial properties and immune-boosting flair and helps bring out the flavour of the fish.

However, for a first-timer, it’s a spicy new flavour, to say the least.

Anna from Spar Outeniqua (whose content never disappoints) recently sat down for a tempura sushi taste test for the first time. While Anna rated the sushi as a 10/10 serving, the real fun (and pain) came into play when she was prompted to try the ‘avo’.

Poor Anna took a big mouthful of the green demon. In fact, she popped the entire serving of wasabi into her mouth at once!

Initially feeling smug in thinking the taste would be avo-esque, Anna’s happy face quickly turned into one of hilarious distress when she realised that this was not what she had signed up for.

With a decent yell and watering eyes, Anna fought the wasabi bravely before getting the condiment out of her mouth and, potentially, out of her memory.

Meanwhile, in other taste test news with far less spicy connotations, an American recently gave South African desserts a whirl with some questionable pronunciation. You can have a watch and a giggle, here.
